Newsgasm: American Chopper meets The Biggest Loser

Big Paul and Junior and the gang at Orange County Choppers make for some watchable television on Discovery’s American Chopper, so they were bound to inspire a spin-off series.

It’s just that we didn’t expect this one.

Discovery has announced that the bike-building series will move to TLC in mid-January. And a companion series of sorts will debut around the same time. The new show’s got most of the same elements: A father & son business, colorful coworkers, and a new project every week.

Only this time, they’re doctors. But they’re not doing brain surgery.The show is Family Surgeons, a ten-part series that follows a father-son medical practice that specializes in gastric bypass surgeries.

So expect many grotesquely fat people (or, if you believe the reports, an occasional guest star like Nicole Richie) in the waiting room. TLC’s programming chief tastefully describes the show as American Chopper meets The Biggest Loser. He says the series will track both the patients’ treatment as well as the family dynamic. We can’t wait for the tirades when Dr. Junior drops the scalpel or ties up the wrong tube.

(TLC also announced two more new ones: Mind Your Manners, an “etiquette boot camp” for normal folk– as opposed to Flavor of Love rejects in VH1′s series; and My First House, a guide to buying one.)

    I got tired of the Teutuls quite a while ago. Big Paul threatening to stuff one of his “Size 13s” up Jr.’s ass somehow lost its charm after the 50th time or so. Those guys are true artisans and they are sculptors in steel, but their personalities leave a lot to be desired. Perhaps the slimiest character is “Mikey” with his antics.

    This doctor series causes me to wonder if maybe you’re kidding, TB. If you’re not, we’ll all have to get in line to avoid seeing what promises to be the dumbest show on TV.
