Those wacky Farrelly Brothers are getting another stab at TV, and another shot at poking fun of the disabled, with the sure-to-be controversial-but-sweet comedy series, I’m with Stupid.

NBC boss Jeff Zucker had announced last week he’s save millions by going strictly with unscripted reality and game shows in the 8-9 pm slot (though apparently, late word has it that My Name Is Earl and The Office will be allowed in and around Howie Mandel). Now the net saves money on developing new ideas. I’m With Stupid will be an adaptation of the BBC series of the same name (stars pictured above).

The comedy will take on the touchy topic of disability. It centers on a down-and-out fellow who becomes friends with a man who uses a wheelchair– and then moves into his home for the disabled!

But before you start writing up the protest signs, remember that the The Farellys have spent years getting heartwarming laughs from the handicapped, directing films like the classic Dumb & Dumber, the charming There’ s Something About Mary, the tender Shallow Hal, and that one about the conjoined twins. They also produced Johnny Knoxville’s Special Olympics yukfest, The Ringer.

(NBC’s given the series a “put pilot” commitment to I’m with Stupid– a deal to produce the pilot that includes substantial penalties if the pilot’s not aired.)
