   uhhhh whats with the Anderson Cooper hateration? he is a FOX! and where is this proof that he likes boys? I challenge that notion and volunteer to disprove it anytime…..

   j/k, although to be quite honest, my friend did–and it was a group deal, so who knows if all-male orgies qualify as “gay” sex.

   seriously, did you ever see the mole? cooper ruled that show with an iron fist.

   talking trash about both adam corolla and anderson cooper might require some sort of gasm-suspension.

   I used to like Anderson Cooper a lot. As he’s gotten more and more exposure I’ve noticed that when reporting he tends to subtly (or in some cases not so subtly) insinuate himself into the story or situation to the point that the story becomes about HIM and HIS reaction to the event more so than about the event itself. It’s odd that he’s so mememememe on camera, because off camera he is very skittish. I don’t think his encroachment on NewsNight has been good for the program. Yes, people are eating him up in the ratings, but then again they’re eating up Greta Van Susteren’s tabloid crap on Fox as well – which is a huge waste of a smart reporter’s talents if you ask me.

   And as far as Adam Carolla goes, personally I don’t understand his appeal, but apparently many people do. Yay personal opinions!

   So lets say Anderson is gay, what should he do, scream it to the world? “hey everyone, I’m Anderson Cooper and I’m gay” Yeah right, he wouldnt be nearly as popular. Look at the world these days, Most Americans arent exactly rolling out the red carpet for gay people. Ignorance and hate is everywhere. And the main line is flowing right out of the White House. We have a hateful fool running the country and most people are more concerned with Paris Hiltons latest adventures. Sad world.

   It’s my personal opinion that gay people who are in positions to combat stereotypes should do what they can to that effect. Plenty of people disagree with me philosophically on this, and I respect that. But I think things have changed considerably and that being out doesn’t do the harm it once did. In the NFL, maybe yes, but in the entertainment and media world, I’d argue not. Has being out harmed Ellen DeGeneres’s career? She’s arguably more successful now than she ever was.

    I agree with m_ruv’s comment about combatting stereotypes but I also understand Anderson’s reason for remaining “in the closet” so to speak. It is important for a journalist to remain impartial. If he were to confirm his sexuality then he would henceforth always be known as “That Gay Journalist” and it would be easy for some (particularly on the right)to dismiss his reporting on certain issues as biased.

    Yeah, stevo I definitely understand that perspective as well. But at the same time, there are plenty of female and minority journalists, and people don’t claim that they lack credibility or objectivity when they report. I think it’s the kind of thing that just changes inevitably over time (at least I hope so).

    I don’t see why a gay person should have any more pressure or need to publicly discuss his/her sex life than a straight person. Does Aaron Brown feel the need to discuss or confirm rumors about his sex life on the air? Did anyone ever expect Tom Brokaw to publicly take a stand in favor of being with a woman? If Anderson Cooper is gay, why should he have to act any differently and bring his personal life into his work?

    That said, I think Billy is wrong in saying that if Anderson were to publicly say he’s gay, his ratings would tank. After all, look at Ellen’s ratings. The “everyone in America is completely full of hate” line just isn’t true, and even a lot of people who say that homosexuality is wrong are willing to watch a gay person on tv if that person does a good job.

    Anderson Cooper was really open about his brother’s suicide, so I doubt if he was “gay all the way” he’d have a problem with admiting it.
