Country singer Sara Evans quit Dancing with The Stars after turning what could have been a private marital breakup into a national sex scandal, but she’s not heading back to Nashville just yet. According to her attorney, Sara will be back for Tuesday night’s show– to dance around questions in an exclusive interview.
While we hope Tom Bergeron gets to do the dirty work (and the details are real dirty), we’re sure Barbara and Diane aren’t too happy over at ABC News (and Sara should have held out for the newsmags– she could have made some serious change), and we’re still waiting for answers to the real question: What does Sara want?
Sara went from second-class country singer to household name and darling of the tabloid infotainment shows last week when she simultaneously pulled out of the top-rated competition and accused her unemployed former congressional candidate husband Craig Schelske of cheating with the nanny, keeping a porn stash that included pictures of himself and other women, maintaining a “Craig’s List” of potential sex partners– and believe us, you don’t want to see his homemade music video of Sara’s “Suds in A Bucket.”
But you need to read a little farther down the notorious divorce filing, past all the sordid, embarrassing accusations (which Craig denies), to find why Sara went all Baldwin-Basinger on the guy: “Wife further alleges that husband has told wife that he is taking the children to Oregon and continually interferes with wife’s possession of and parenting time with the parties’ minor children.” Try taking the kids while mama’s dancing around in Hollywood, and mama’s lawyer’s gonna fight dirty…
If Sara’s smart, and judging from this broadside, she and her handlers are very crafty indeed, she’ll get an album, a TV movie and maybe even a sex tape (if Craig’s such a picture-taking perv, he must have made at least one with his wife) out of the scandal. Or a reality TV series.

I don’t know that I’d call Sara a “second-class country star.” She was the most played country singer of 2005, and won Female Vocalist of the Year last year as well. And her career before that was anything but lackluster, with several platinum albums.
Sorry, I’m just a fan.
You’ll have to excuse TVGasm, sugarshane. Just because the woman isn’t blonde, dumb enough to be mentioned on “Entertainment” shows nightly for 7 years, and slept around with more than a nightclub full of men; tvgasm doesn’t appreciate people raiding their favorite Reality shows.
Sarcasm aside, it is sad that this is playing out like a Paris Hilton ‘scandal’.
Yeah, not at all a “second-class country singer.” Pretty solid crossover star for a while there.
She sure is a second rate dancer, though…
If she’s going to air her dirty laundry in public to help her in her divorce proceedings, the she is subjecting herself to criticism/snark. Reality television is always subject to public opinion, but making a spectacle of bowing out of a reality TV competition is just asking for commentary.
Zoobabe,
Sara isn’t intentionally airing her dirty laundry, she’s doing what a person should do in a divorce proceeding if they want to secure a solid case for obtaining custody of their children. Had she not mentioned this information in her divorce proceeding, (which was exposed by the media, not her), a judge could think she was making these allegations up once she got to the child custody stages, in an effort to make a more persuasive case. Sure, she could try to play the whole “I’m a celebrity who just didn’t want my personal life out there,” but she clearly wanted to do things the proper way.
Additionally, what do you think a judge would think if she hadn’t bowed out of the reality competition after making these allegations? “Oh, your husband is an abusive adulterer who exposed his children to porn, but you’re going to chill in California and continue to let him take care of them?” Wouldn’t look great for her child custody case. She’s doing the responsible thing by not hiding from the public, knowing that when you’re a celebrity it will be exposed anyway, and she’s honoring her fans by allowing them an explanation instead of just heading off into the sunset. In a horrible situation, I think she’s doing pretty well.
it might be worth recalling at this point that sarah evans’ ‘DWTS’ ‘campaign’ was ‘endorsed’ in late august by disgraced former house majority leader tom delay (i wonder if ‘the hammer’ has any interesting video/print materials stashed in his closet). in his mass e-mail urging his friends/supporters to get behind evans, delay seemed particularly hopeful that she would outlast one competitor in particular:
“One of her opponents on the show is ultra liberal talk show host Jerry Springer. We need to send a message to Hollywood and the media that smut has no place on television by supporting good people like Sara Evans.”
oh, the irony. i’d been feeling bad for a few of the earnest, desperate-for-exposure b-list celebs who’d been booted before the hapless jerry, but seeing tom delay get yet another dose of well-deserved comeuppance (however trivial) makes me shake my fist and yell ‘JERRY! JERRY! JERRY!’
i’m sure it’s all very difficult for sarah evans, and i’d probably feel sorry for her if i knew her. there’s one lesson here, for sure: you can talk your wife into making a home video, you can collect a box of customized porn–you can even screw the nanny and get away with it, occasionally. but try to take a woman’s kids away from her and see what happens.
sugarshane- as a fan of hers, you are correct in sticking up for her b/c of your bias and I feel badly for her as well b/c no woman should have to go through what she is. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with bowing out for “personal reasons”. letting your lawyers collect the salicious evidence against your asshole husband and cutting off his balls in court. The media can say whatever they want, but you can stay home with the kids and let your family and friends help you ride out the storm. THAT was my point. She seems like a good mother and I do feel for her in this situation.
Right on Zoobabe!
I think celebrities say they don’t expose their private matters, when in fact they do. I feel bad for her and what she went thru, but don’t sit there and say you want to spend private time, and then go on a show and do an interview.
And Tom Delay – what an asshole.
“I think celebrities say they don’t expose their private matters, when in fact they do.”
This is not really a fair statement. I am not a fan of the country singer Sara or the dancer Sara, but I highly doubt this is how she wanted to end her marriage. Yes, she is going to address the public on Tuesday night’s show; but we have no idea what the contract with ABC entails. We don’t know what ABC could have done with her if she refused to address the show and/or its fans. This has made this highly successful show ONE WEEK SHORTER which could possibly cost ABC a large chunk of money with its advertisers and whatnot. I say “boohoo” to this, but still, we don’t know . . .
Sara Evans has not made the rounds of the talk show circuit and has not made it a point to sling mud on her soon-to-be ex. She filed court documents that should be confidential. It is amazing how much classified, confidential material make it onto television and onto the internet.
While some celebrites will say and do anything (Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, JLO)to get a little press, I don’t see this situation as anything near that. Sara does NOT want people laughing at her or her unfortunate situation. Let us please cut this lady some slack. It is unfortunate for her that this situation arose at this time . . . if she were really into all of this media coverage; wouldn’t she stay on this show to get the public’s vote? She’d have an excellent chance of winning now with the sympathy/wronged-woman vote. She isn’t doing this so let’s be nice.
Oh please TWilliams. You think she’s afraid of what ABC will do to her b/c she’s costing them money? I have some land to sell you in Florida. I’m not being mean- just stating a fact.
I don’t think she is “afraid”. I only question “why else” would she appear on this show to answer questions when she has made it public that she wants to “spend time with her family at this difficult time.” I am sure ABC demanded her do this. Do you honestly think she’d want to go on this show and cry in front of America because the man she made a life-long commitment to is an asshole?
Seriously, this wasn’t an off the wall comment. She doesn’t want to air this for everybody to see. Zoobabe, not everybody gets their kicks seeing someone else down on their luck.
You baffle me, because you have stated: “letting your lawyers collect the salicious evidence against your asshole husband and cutting off his balls in court. The media can say whatever they want, but you can stay home with the kids and let your family and friends help you ride out the storm. THAT was my point.” That was MY point as well. Funny how we had the same point but you attack me for bringing up ABC. Her place is NO longer on Dancing With the Stars — it is with her family. I have said that twice now and I am still pretty certain ABC demanded something more out of this contractual obligation. They are the assholes in the situation for making her do this while she should be in Tennessee with her children.
TWilliams, are you kidding me? You actually believe ABC demanded something of her? Wow, I was told people like you still existed, but I didn’t believe it was true.
May, May, May . . . what to say to you? I honestly do not understand people who continue to believe that all is fine and dandy and ridiculously simple. You call DeLay an asshole and I would go one step further than you and say it should have been in all CAPS. I am not a fan and am NOT defending Sara Evans. Maybe Sara cannot get enough of herself and perhaps she tingles every time she sees herself on television (but then why not continue dancing?!?). I am SIMPLY stating that ABC does have some power and leverage in this situation. Maybe Sara actually quit the competiton and very quickly asked Tom if she could sit down with him (in front of a camera) and explain herself so that she could continue her enchanted life. That scenerio just doesn’t sound right to ME although many others must think this is how it all went down. Sorry, but is this how you see it? What other scenerio do you see? I am honestly and very seriously asking you this because I cannot fathom it going down like this.
Have you heard of any of the outrageous rules and fees tied to a reality competition’s contract? Just like breaking any contract, there would be repercussions. ABC is not just a television network (also home to the surprisingly good and snarky Ugly Betty), but it is a large corporation that doesn’t like being screwed over. (Why else do recently booted contestants trek on over to the lame Jimmy Kimmel Live? — perhaps because it is ABC’s evening talk show and they are contractually obligated to appear on it — I’d much rather be on Letterman as would these contestants) Just talking about anything on Survivor could cost a contestant tens of millions of dollars. Yes, it is ridiculous but it is truth. You don’t have to believe it and you can continue to believe everything I type is idiotic, simple-minded and preposterous. I may have had a pretty charmed and lucky life; but my world is not rose-colored.
I am NOT defending Sara or sticking up for her and NEVER have. Sara could either walk away or pay up or even talk with Tom some more next week. She’s definitely a better talker than she is a dancer. She’ll probably want some more air time to clear her name and squeaky-clean image after her soon-to-be-ex dishes the “dirt” on her in a few days . . . because this story definitely needs another “spin”. *sigh*
