As we get word this morning that NBC’s original late night host Tom Snyder has died at 71, the network is moving forward with its plans to have Conan O’Brien replace Jay Leno on The Tonight Show in 2009– and with plans to replace Conan with former Saturday Night Live comic Jimmy Fallon.

NBC’s late-night chief boss Rick Ludwin says he probably won’t make an official announcement until next year, but confirms that Jimmy’s on the top of their “short list” (he’s 5’11″”).

Sorry, Carson. The Jimmy Fallon bandwagon started rolling in February, when he sibned developmental deal with NBC. Funny that SNL boss (and Dr. Evil model) Lorne Michaels owns a piece of 12.35 a.m. Late Night slot.

Insiders say the NBC suits believe a Conan-Fallon two-hour block would be very “compatible.” They haven’t done a pilot or any run-throughs with Jimmy, but are basing their confidence on seeing him do the SNL Weekend Updates.

And what do you think of that?
