Ana’s Got a Gun

Lost

lost_02112305.jpgSo this is the big episode of Lost everyone’s been waiting for. After a two week tease we finally see the aftermath of Ana Lucia killing Shannon. Will Sayid revert back to the stereotypical Iraqi we saw last season when he tortured Sawyer (but in his defense, it was Sawyer, and who didn’t want to shove bamboo up his fingernails?) and go after Ana Lucia? Well, we were not disappointed. It was a cracking good episode. And we even get our first Ana Lucia flashbacks and she turns out to be even more unpleasant than we first thought. Let’s put it this way. There is a reason the group of survivors led by Ana Lucia has been reduced to only four people. I’m starting to think there aren’t any Others and it’s all just an elaborate ruse for everyone to get as far away from that bitch as humanly possible. Before we get to the recap, first indulge me a little look at the internet scuttlebutt. In a prime example of taking everything posted on the internet with a grain of salt I present to you this website (pointed out to me by my fellow Lost fanatic Nan) which tries to question whether or not Shannon was shot and who it was exactly who shot her. And this website even gets a list of suspects. Basically this just proves that sometimes people can get a little carried away with their conspiracy theories. So keep that in mind when I point you to this picture (and this one as well) sent in by TVgasm reader Tamara Carver regarding the identity of The Others who took Walt last season. And finally, there is an interesting article on Papermag.com titled Lost for Dummies that gives a good primer for those new to the world of Lost.

But enough of the geek chatter. Let’s get on with the recap. We’ve got a lot of Ana Lucia hate to unload.

We open with a flashback. And it’s Ana Lucia doing what she loves most in this world. She’s at a shooting range firing a gun and grimacing. When I need to unwind I usually have a nice glass of wine and watch reality TV. She likes to shoot stuff. To each his own, I guess.

lost_05112305.jpgWe then cut to Ana Lucia at her psychiatrist’s office, and I immediately am overwhelmed with sympathy for the poor bastard in charge of analyzing her. He tells Ana Lucia that he feels she has come a long way in the last four months. From this I can only assume that four months ago Ana Lucia spent her days feasting on the flesh of children aged 4-6. He then asks about Danny. She says they are no longer together (quite the shocker that one, eh?). She feels that she is better off alone. And that I believe America, from red state to blue state, can all collectively agree on that. And with that the psychiatrist hands her something. When she opens it we see a badge. He then says something that sends a chill down the spine of every law abiding citizen in this country. “Welcome back to the force Officer Cortez. Fantastic. Who would’ve thought we’d actually get to see the worst psychiatrist and the worst cop in the world in the same room at the same time? If Carrot Top enters the room we’d get a hat trick.

Back in the present we go back to where we left off last week, and the week before that actually, with Sayid’s look of hatred towards Ana Lucia as he cradles Shannon’s dead body. Get the popcorn out. Sayid grabs his gun and heads for Ana Lucia but Eko tackles him to the ground. After a short fight in the mud, Ana Lucia sucker punches him in the back of the head and knocks Sayid out cold. She then turns the gun on everyone else and the look in her eyes tells you that she has just officially lost her marbles.

When Michael asks her what her problem is she shoots over his shoulder and orders everyone to get back. Even the rest of the tailies are scared of her at this point. When she tells Eko to tie him up he refuses and walks off. Ana Lucia then points the gun at Libby and orders her to tie him up using the vines from the Sawyer stretcher. “I know what I’m doing, she says, which is probably second on the list of famous last words after Custer’s “Where’d all these Indians come from?

Back in the flashback we see Ana Lucia in her uniform on her first day back on the force. She walks into her captain’s office. When the captain gives her her assignment Ana Lucia is pissed because it’s a desk job. She can’t shoot things from behind a desk, goddamit. Ana Lucia, in her own charming way, demands to be put on the street. The captain refuses because she was in an “officer related shooting. Ana Lucia then asks her if she’s just doing this because she’s her mother. So the captain is her mother. Interesting. She says she can’t put her back on the street because that would let everyone know she pulled strings for her daughter. And then five seconds later she signs the paperwork that lets her back on the street. This Cortez family is all about integrity isn’t it?

Back on the beach we see Jack filling his canteen with water when a golf ball comes flying into the water trough. Oh. My. God. The Others are back and they golf. Oh wait; it was just Kate hitting balls on the beach with Hurley and Charlie. When Jack shows up and starts to give Kate tips they end up betting each other who can do better at golf. The air is positively thick with sexual tension. I love it when they get all Hepburn/Tracy with each other.

Back on the unhappy part of the island Sayid is finally coming to and he’s tied to a tree. He starts screaming at Ana Lucia to untie him but before she can answer Eko grabs Sawyer, slings him over his shoulder and starts to leave. When Ana Lucia pleads with him to stay, he ignores her and walks off. The fact that Ana Lucia doesn’t shoot him doesn’t register with the rest of them as they all still stay there cowering.

lost_06112305.jpgBack in flashback land we see Ana Lucia hitting the streets again in her patrol car. She’s pissed that her mom/captain assigned her to an easy neighborhood like Westwood. How dare she not give her even more special treatment? And she calls herself a Cortez? But all that is moot as soon she takes a call outside their patrol area on a domestic disturbance, the lifeblood of every COPS episode. When they get to the scene and see a couple arguing Ana Lucia immediately takes out her gun and orders everyone on the ground. Her partner starts yelling at her and ordering her to holster her weapon. Wasn’t this supposed to be the episode that made Ana Lucia more sympathetic? Yeah well they’re doing a piss poor job of it so far.

Cut to present day and we see Ana Lucia sitting on a stump rocking back and forth. She has officially lost it and I for one am lapping it up like gravy with a biscuit. Libby tells her she should let Sayid go but she refuses. Michael goes to give him water and catches him up on who they are, what happened to Walt etc. Then Michael tells him that he’s now gone a day without screaming Walt’s name at the top of his lungs for no reason, and he’s starting to get a little antsy.

Back on the golfing range the cutesy flirting continues unabated. Kate hits a great shot and when it’s Jack’s turn he hooks it. When he goes off to search for his ball in the woods he comes upon Eko carrying Sawyer.

In the hatch we see Locke doing a crossword puzzle while doing “button duty.â€? The clue for 42 down is “Enkidu’s friendâ€? and the answer is “Gilgamesh.” Gilgamesh is of course an ancient Sumerian king and also one of the bosses from Final Fantasy V, easily defeated as long as you use your healing spells judiciously. What is even more interesting is Enkidu was described as a “mythical wild-man raised by animals.â€? Interesting, no?

As he’s filling in the answer Locke is interrupted as Jack, Eko and Sawyer enter the hatch. Jack throws Sawyer in the shower to cool off his fever and he has Kate go get him fresh sheets. Because sick people like the feel of fresh sheets. Outside in the hallway Locke stumbles across Eko and they both exchange quizzical hello’s.

Meanwhile in the jungle Bernard is trying to reason with Ana Lucia. When he tries to plead with her to leave she asks him “How long have I kept you alive out here Bernard? Yeah that’s right. So cut me some slack. Nice, now Ana Lucia is taking credit for keeping everyone alive. Conveniently ignoring the fact that most of the people from the tail were taken away by The Others. She doesn’t exactly have a great batting average here.

lost_01112305.jpg
Is it me or does she look much taller dead?

When Libby asks her what her plan is, Sayid says “She has no plan. She only has her guilt. And the gun. Good point.

With that Ana Lucia tells Michael to go to the camp and she demands he bring back a box of ammo, some blankets and a change of clothes, a cowboy hat and a Scooby Doo Chia Pet. Michael, seeing as how he has a gun pointed at him, reluctantly agrees.

In the flashback we see Ana Lucia and her partner getting back to the station arguing over Ana Lucia’s propensity to shoot first and ask questions never. Before they can get into it they are interrupted by a detective saying they got her “guy.”

When they bring her into the lineup room to ID the guy, Ana Lucia’s mother explains how they have all sorts of evidence against him and all they need is for her ID. Apparently this is the guy that shot Ana Lucia four times in the chest. Dumb jerk should’ve gone for a head shot. Ana Lucia says it isn’t the guy, even though he confessed. When Ana Lucia still says it isn’t him they let him go. I’m confused. If they have his prints and a confession, how is it they let him go again? Because Ana Lucia said it wasn’t him? That takes precedence over an actual confession and fingerprint evidence? I want to move to this town. Especially now since we now it’s a lot safer knowing Ana Lucia is safely stranded on a desert island.

In the hatch, Locke is asking Eko questions about what happened. Eko says there was an accident and someone was shot and killed. Locke asks why the others haven’t come with them. He simply says “they cannot come back right now.

Meanwhile Jack is tending to Sawyer who’s gone septic and they need to force feed him antibiotics. When Jack’s first attempt fails Kate whispers in his ear and is able to have him take the medicine. Whatever, she still forfeited the golf game.

Back in the jungle Bernard has discovered his long lost testicles and tells Ana Lucia he’s leaving. With that everyone else follows suit and it leaves only Ana Lucia and Sayid alone together in the woods. This reminds me of that episode of Dukes of Hazard when Uncle Jessie and Boss Hog got locked in a safe together and finally came to be friends. But then once they were freed Boss Hog still tried to foreclose on the Duke’s mortgage. He was such a little shit.

In the jungle we see Michael running and he stumbles across Sun working in her garden. The look on her face is either surprise or disgust since Michael is now going on about a week with the same clothes on and no bath and he must be ripe with a capital R. He tells her he has no time to explain and he needs to see Jack right away.

In the hatch Jack is interrogating Eko but he’s not talking. Soon Michael is there and he explains everything to them. Jack then starts loading up some shotguns and prepares to go out there and get Sayid back. Locke is cautioning them to think things over first. Eko then stands up and asks them what they want. Is it revenge? Jack says he just wants to get his people back. When he mentions Ana Lucia’s name Jack is taken aback because he met her briefly before the plane took off, and they had a drink together. Eko then agrees to take them to her as long as they leave the guns behind.

lost_03112305.jpgOver in the jungle Ana Lucia is interrogating Sayid. When he asks her if she is going to kill him, she responds by saying “should I?â€? Sayid’s only response is that 40 days ago he tortured a man, just like he has tortured hundreds of other men in the past. Not to be outdone in the story time hour, Ana Lucia then tells her story of how she accidentally let her guard down while on a burglary call and was shot. Ever since then she feels dead. Then Sayid shoots back with “Oh yeah, well my dad could totally beat up your dad,” to which Ana Lucia says “na-uh” and then Sayid responds with “yeah-huh infinity,” and then Ana Lucia says “na-uh infinity plus one,” and so on and so forth. When Sayid then asks what happened to the man who shot her we go back to the flashback and find out for ourselves.

Ana Lucia is in a bar watching the man play pool. When he goes out to his car she follows him out there and tells him “I was pregnant before shooting him point blank in the chest. Damn. And then when he’s on the ground she finishes the job by putting three more in his head. Double damn. I can’t believe he deprived that woman of reproducing. We need more Ana Lucias in this world.

Back in the jungle Ana Lucia lies and simply says “they never found him which makes me think perhaps she cut up the body and ate it, because at this point she’s capable of anything.

Ana Lucia then cuts Sayid free and tells him he can do what he wants. Sayid says it’s no good killing her, since they are both already dead. He then goes over to Shannon’s body and cradles her in his arms.

Back in the hatch Kate is telling Sawyer that everything will be OK. We then see Michael walk up the beach as Vincent runs over to greet him. And we also see Bernard’s tearful reunion with his wife. Even Jin and Sun happily reunite. And there’s not a dry eye in the Hill household. Then we end the episode as Jack and Eko meet Sayid in the jungle holding Shannon’s lifeless body. As he walks past them, Jack and Ana Lucia look at each other and we fade to black.

lost_04112305.jpg

So what did everyone else think? Will Sawyer get better? What will Sayid do? Is anyone else curious about what Ana Lucia’s Match.com profile says? And does anyone else notice those weird Arbor Day commercials that show up every week?

I don’t think there is any way possible to make AnaLucia likable. Hate. Hate. Hate her. Hate her even more now. Can’t wait to see how how high the AnaL hate can go.

Dead Shannon did look about 8 feet tall. Would of been interesting if her ghost brother showed up and they walked into the sunset. Sort of a weird incestuous by marriage afterlife greg/marsha brady kind of freakness.

I am getting tired of this show, it just doesn’t go anyplace, it just prattles on with no real direction. Its getting too twin peaks for me, I may bail on this show soon, and begin watching Andy Griffith Show reruns, or , dare I say, read a book!

I can’t figure out the hate for her either. If she were a man, she would be considered a great, strong leader. It is acceptable for men to behave in this way. But because she is a woman, she’s a bitch?

I’m hating on AL b/c she’s f’ing crazy and should not be allowed near any weapons ever. I’d think about joining the Others to get away from a bitchy premeditated murderer too! She cannot die soon enough or painfully enough. Doesn’t help that the “actress” can’t act.

We all swooned and got choked up here as Jin and Sun hugged and we plotzed on the floor with happiness at the Rose/Bernard reunion. I actually cheered. My friend said she’d stop watching if R&B didn’t get together. But all was well there.

Nothing else to say since the master EdHill said it all.

ana lucia is a bitch because shes a total bitch. none of this double standard, uh, bitchiness….

i still think shannon was just shot by ana lucia and it was just a really bad job by the makeup/wardrobe people creating a bullet wound.

the end when bernard and rose were reunited was really fantastic, and very emotional for me–and i’m known to have a heart of steel, so to have the tears well up i believ to be a testament to the show.

and more sun, she’s just the most adorable thing ever! shes like an asian amy poehler, minus the jokes and, well, english.

i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again (i like repeating myself): ana lucia is irredeemably hateworthy because she is played by michelle rodriguez, an actress so inept and miscast that she makes keanu reeves look like laurence olivier. i couldn’t decide which line was worse: ‘i’ve got to be back on the street!’ ‘i was pregnant!’ ‘i feel dead!’ UGGGHH!! she SUCKS! when she got the idea of going off to live in the jungle by herself, i almost cried with joy until i remembered that rodriguez is now billed as a regular cast member (as opposed to the actors who play rose and bernard, who are billed as ‘guest stars’) and so we are likely stuck with her for the remainder of the season.

the only thing worse than ana was another extended slo-mo, teary-music montage as the various parties were reunited with their estranged loved ones. i won’t deny a little lip-quivering and ocular moistness when michael bent down to pet vincent, or when sun dashed towards jin with the foamy wavewash splashing behind her (nothing suggestive about that image), or, best of all, the look on rose’s face when she caught sight of bernard. but successful melodramatic emotional manipulation or no, the slo-mo montages are pure FILLER.

otherwise, the ep was solid. i especially enjoyed the confrontation between the two alpha-hunter-gatherers of the two halves of the plane, eko and locke–watching new friendships and rivalries unfold should knock the tension back up after what has felt like three years’ worth of anticipation.

Yay ed hill! you are far funnier than that other person who recaps lost on the off weeks. I too would like to move to the town AL is from, and open up a defense law practice.
I had a pang of sympahty when AL said “I was pregnant”. But then when she shot old dude ten times and then shot his dead body some more I had to slowly back away from her corner of the ring. Please lady, get a new facial expression! (I’d like to add that these ladies have some sersiouly good island armpit razors stashed away.)

I gotta say I was disappointed this episode. Granted, there were some great vignettes and a great ending, however, we ALL wanted to see Sayid go Iraqi all over Ana Lucia’s ass. And what a buildup it’s been…for 2 weeks we’ve been teased with that look of shock and pure hatred on Sayid’s face…and they end it with him saying something sissy like “if we’re both dead, there is no point”. Come on! Where is the tension? Where are the mindgames? I was expecting this hatred to fester for weeks…you know, Sayid being conflicted on whether or not to channel his inner torturrer or not. Plus, we’d be guaranteed a good smack down for Ana Lucia. Oh well…

Btw, EdHill, you are freaking hysterical. I too want to move to Ana Lucia land, esp. now that she ain’t there shooting people and shit.

Ana Lucia is awful. I cannot stand her and am disgusted that she is on this show. I was supposed to be sympathetic to her why? Yes, I understand that losing a child is difficult; but killing a man and then shooting him some more does not make it any better or more right. Ana Lucia was NOT the bigger person in that situation — she sank even lower than his level, and she is supposed to be heroic? Terrible choice here, writers. She cannot be redeemed — EVER. All of this, and Michelle Rodriguez is one of the most pathetic actresses alive. Ugh . . .

I guess the ratings were down some 15 percent this last week and people are questioning why?! I think it is easy: Ana Lucia. I couldn’t like anybody who likes her — so all of you fans out there, I couldn’t get along with you. Don’t even try to defend you feelings/opinion — you must all be cheering for a Weaver victory on The Amazing Race.

When everyone was teary-eyed over the reunion, I felt the most sorry for Libby. Poor Libby had nobody and she was all alone. Her “friend” on the island had just pulled a gun on her and now she is in a new group of people and will probably be viewed as an outsider.

A few posts ago someone compared wimpy Michael to a strong Eko? Why may I ask? They are nothing alike. If you are comparing two men you should compare Locke and Eko. They are the providers/hunters etc. of the group. I think it will be quite interesting to see how these two take to each other.

As for the other castaways: I still believe Kate knows so much more than she is leading on. Now they said she is on steroids. This lady knows something about the island or why they are there. Why can nobody else see this!?!

Bitching about a character here and there is good and all but not through the entire recap.
Well I guess it’s kinda hard to avoid this time since this episode was about her. heh
I like the character AL. I like Mr, Echo more but AL has grown on me.
As someone else said… you all know damn well if that was a male character doing that shit… all of you women would be swooning over him saying how troubled and so hurt and blah blah bullshit the guy is **AKA SAWYER whom i like btw**….. but since it’s a woman it’s nothing but…
“Oh she’s a bitch! She’s crazy! I wish she would die already! WHAAAAA bitch bitch BITCH!!”
Her backstory was very weak though and it really didn’t help her likeable factor any.

And as for the next episode…. it’s very lackluster for me. Yet ANOTHER boring ass episode we’re gonna have to suffer through that’s all about little miss attention whore Kate.
You know that stank tramp is happy as hell now that she’s gonna have Jack and Sawyer fighting over her once again.
I hope AL kicks her damn teeth in.

Am I the only one who thought the reaction to Michael and Jin’s return by the rest of the camp was weird? I mean, as far as the rest of the camp knew, these guys were their best hope to being saved. Now, out of nowhere, they come walking out of the jungle to a hero’s welcome? They FAILED! Wouldn’t the first thing people ask is what the hell happened? I can’t imagine it would be to run up to Jin and act like they were just reunited with their best friend. The dude didn’t even speak english. He couldn’t have formed THAT many friendships.

I guess the camp could’ve been tipped off by Sawyer’s return, but I still think they’d be more disappointed to see Michael and Jin than excited. Also, does anyone know if the whole camp knows about the hatch, or just the select few?

I liked how in the opening credits it said special guest star Maggie Grace.
It seemed to me that when Ana said they never found him (the guy that shot her)-she was referring to the fact that she got rid of his body after she shot him in cold blood. Trying to drum up compassion for her character by making her have a miscarriage simply did not work. I felt no emotion in that scene whatsoever. I hate Kate and I hate Ana, and I can’t wait till they are thrown together so they can take each other out.

I’m gonna tell her what you’ve all been saying about her on TVgasm and when she’s finished on the island she’s gonna come over here and snarl a bit, then pistol-whip you all. Then I’ll burst a balloon behind her head and she’ll probably pull out her gun and shoot everyone cos she’s such a fun-loving trigger-happy maniac. Go Ana Lucia!

Heres a women cop who was almost killed on the job and lost her baby, has managed to survive on an Island for 40 days but everyone hates her. Yet we all love that cutie sawyer who’s nothing but a redneck conman who would sell his grandma for a shot of moonshine. Kate got her best friend killed over her extreme selfishness. Sayid is an Iraqi Torturer he’s almost on par with the guys who are killing our boys daily. The rest of the crew are a bunch of whiners, Jack crybaby rich boy. Michael is a shlep. Frankly the only one with a any real balls is AL go figure. Rose is cool too she hasnt bitched once, probably cuz Bernard wasnt around for her to B-slap, you can tell who wears the size 24 pants in the family.

I patiently wait for the Lost Boys episode were Locke kills everyone in their sleep, “real quiet like” and then departs in his rocket plane off the Island. We discover that Locke was behind the whole thing.

I just started watching the shows a few weeks ago after reading up on all the recaps and information on various websites. (I felt like I was missing out with all the Lost talk.)

Anyway, I mention that because I obviously missed a lot with the AL hating. She must have done some pretty bad stuff before I started watching for people to dislike her so bad. I don’t dislike her at all, I don’t feel one way or the other yet. Maybe the writers are doing a better job creating sympathy but in the past they had her do things that people just can’t seem to get over.

(I will definately concede on the poor acting though)

I don’t think the AL dislike has anything to do with the fact that she’s a woman. That’s ridiculous. I’m female and don’t like the character, either. There’s no way to sympathize with her. Even with all the bad shit that’s happened to her, I really don’t care. Plus, I agree with the posters who’ve said that Michelle Rodriguez is a bad actress. Yes, she is – and so, for that matter, is the chick who plays Kate. I don’t like that character either. If it were a man acting the way AL does, I wouldn’t like him any more than I like her. Their gender has nothing to do with it, IMO.

FYI for you guys: after tonight, no new ‘Lost’ episode until January. That sucks!

I think the Ana Lucia hating comes more from the fact that she really is a crazy bitch. Everyone out there has the right to be scared and a little off their rocker considering, but she has totally gone over the deepend. Granted she has a shady past but that doesnt give her the right to weild the gun around and order people to tie Sayid up. SHe is a control freak who has lost control and in my experience, those who crave control and lose it, have a REALLY hard time…I for one have no sympathy. Michelle Rodriguez plays the same kind of character over and over. It gets old..

First of all Twilliams, the reason the ratings were down 15% last weekend was probably because it was THE DAY before Thanksgiving, only the biggest travel day of the year, not because people don’t like AL. This season, Lost ranks #3 of all shows on the air in the Nielsens, so I wouldnt say that ratings are a concern at this point.
As for AL, I also think this hatred is over-blown, Sure she is kind of annoying at times, but you can tell that her character has a good heart. She really has saved a lot of lives, she protected everyone by killing Goodwin, and she was trying to protect everyone when she killed Shannon. Obviously, she tied him up because she was scared of his psycho Iraqi ass, who wouldnt be? And maybe she went a little crazy, but the situation is a little nerve-wracking wouldnt you say? And I love how a bunch of you have sympathy for this punk she killed, that is hello, a cop killer? He didnt know AL was a bitch when he tried to kill her for no reason.
And whoever thought that the reunion scenes were filler, you suck!

Awwwright, then. So AL got shot but survived, but her fetus didn’t. And the father left her. Why? And she guns down the cop shooter (who cares?).

Ms. Rodriguez is indeed a lousy, one-trick-pony actress. Her character won’t be long for the show. I even think she’ll be killed by Ecko, who’ll do the deed out of compassion for the rest (the bitch needs killing).

I’m tired of all the bullshit twists that mean nothing. The writers don’t have a clue themselves and this mess is going to continue until we all realize the plot will keep changing until we get tired, then they’ll end the series with a whimper. Watch for an episode (extra long) that brings some loose ends together and then says “bye-bye”. I see no good resolution to this mess.

I still love the show and wait for each new episode. I see the redeeming qualities of the so-called “baddies”. I LOVED the ending when the spouses were reunited( waterworks galore)! ana lucia lover (#32),

i think ana lucia could be a sympathetic character if she weren’t played by someone who shouldn’t be cast in a high school production of ‘HMS Pinafore,’ much less a major film or TV show (and yes, i have seen ‘girlfight,’ and it SUCKS). even evangeline lilly–whose last stop before getting cast on lost was one of those creepy faux-phone sex commercials that get aired on local affiliates after the 11 o’clock news–can act circles around michelle rodriguez, and that’s saying something, because she is about as believable playing a bad-ass fugitive-on-the-run as she would be playing ebenezer scrooge.

as for the rest of your complaint: i don’t think anyone wants to invite sawyer over for thanksgiving leftovers. but he’s got some complexity, the actor who plays him has some appeal, and, most of all, he occasionally brings some levity to the scene, which is usually in short supply. ana lucia could be appealing if she were played by someone who brought more to the table than rock-hard abs and a butterface scowl. i agree that jack, michael, sayid, et. al. can be downright unlikable. it’s just that the actors who play them don’t make me want to stick a finger down my throat every time they open their mouths. for me, it’s all about the performance. the two riot grrls are by far the worst actors involved, made to look even worse next to, say, terry o’quinn, who used to be a bit part character actor but has taken the role of locke and turned it into one of the most memorably creepy and complex performances TV has seen in years.

and kathy (#39): i didn’t say i wasn’t moved by the reunion scene, but come on! it’s just drawn-out, cheap, melodramatic emotional manipulation for sentimental suckers who care about whether or not a character has ‘a good heart.’ oh, please. she doesn’t have a heart–she’s played by michelle rodriguez.

I am definitely in the hate AL camp. I don’t understand how the other tailies let her lead as long as they did when it’s clearly obvious she is no stable mable. I see why the other camp follows Jack because he’s a doctor and because he’s a calm, clear-minded presence. AL is a bullying witch who would have been the one tossed down a pit if the other tailies had any sense.

PS I agree with the post who said they like EdHill’s Lost recaps over the other recapper’s. Recapping is an unacknowledged art and one that EdHill, J-Unit, B-Side, and sg-dub definitely excel.

    Why people hate Ana Lucia:

She’s a terrible actress, her teeth are creepy, and her character is an asshole and an idiot. She’s done a terrible job of defending her brood, everything she says or does is hateful and nasty, and it’s just a tiresome plot device so she and Sayid can try to out-heavy each other with painfully dumb dialogue. We get it, you’ve suffered. Now stop being such a bitch about it.

I found Sawyer unlikeable when we first encountered him, but he grew on me. His back story really got to me. The same, however, cannot be said for Ana Lucia. Even when she got that drink with Jack first season, my first thought was ughh Michelle Rodriguez. Cannot stand her.
Anyway, unlike with Sawyer, NOTHING Ana has done or will ever do will make me feel even a modicum of like/sympathy for her. I guess it’s because unlike Sawyer, she is completely devoid of anything even resembling a distant cousin of charisma.
I had a feeling there would be some kind of baby-angle to her back story. She’s been asked before about having kids and got all uncomfortable (not that that was an acting stretch for Michelle, who only has about 3 facial expressions). When she told the guy who shot her she had been pregnant I felt absolutely NO sympathy for her.
But to prove I do have feelings, I totally lost it during the Vincent/Michael/Jin/Sun reunions. And Bernard and Rose…I need a tissue just thinking about it.

The reason that it’s so easy to hate Ana Lucía is because she has no remorse. Nothing she does ever seems to back up on her. She is trigger happy, not just with a gun but also with her rage. And if we don’t get to see the complexity of who she is and if we are not allowed to witness and vicariously experience her inner turmoil, then we’re left with nothing there to respect or care for. Much of the fault with this is in the poor writing of her character. But a big part of the responsibility for this lack of likability is Michelle Rodriguez’s one-note acting style. When I was a grad student at UCLA, there were students in the acting classes that used to amateurishly misinterpret the ability to play angry/rage for complex character construction. Michelle Rodriguez seems to share this vision.

Sawyer is a conman and a murderer (let’s not forget that he killed the wrong man as part of a trick played on him by an investigator, days before the plane crashed). But we know that Sawyer is conflicted. We know that he mouths off as a defense mechanism to cover up all of his inner turmoil.

By contrast, when Ana Lucía killed the man who had shot her and made her lose her baby, it was so brutal and such an intended action on her part, that there’s no room for us to feel for her. Particularly, when she ruthlessly approaches the dead body and unloads three more shots into it. Why would anyone care about someone like that? It’s so methodical and pre-meditated.

I think Evaneline Lilly can and should improve tremendously in her acting, but she’s still ten times better than Michelle Rodriguez. Evangeline’s prettiness is appealing and her chemistry with Jack and Sawyer is intriguing. Nonetheless, she’s not committing to the role of Kate, when she performs the flashback scenes and is a bad, bad, bad girl. But, I think that with time and training, she may be able to find her acting voice and has some potential for becoming a strong actress. Michelle Rodriguez, on the other hand, has no hope!

You thought Nathan was creepy too, everyone was all for him being in the pit until he didnt confess. Then everyone was like, whoa, wait a minute. Ana Lucia is just too guarded. Well… you get the point. heh
The haters aren’t giving the character a chance to grow on them.
They’re just as quick as she is to point that gun and pull the trigger.
As for her being a bitch, well yeah she is. Of course she is… the woman has been through a whole hellava lot.
She got shot.. lost the man or woman she loved, lost her baby. Shot the guy who did it dead.. and then when she gets on the island… First night… people are getting kidnapped right out from under her nose. And later on… more get kidnapped and then she has to kill a guy that was posing as one fo them…
I’m sure some of us would be big crazy ass bitches too that would be a bit jumpy and quick to shoot.
At least keep an open mind about the character.
I did for Shannon even though I couldn’t stand the brat… but I was willing to give the character a chance to grow on me.

OK. We get it. Some of you hate AL with the passion of rabid dogs and some of you like her just fine. Can we move on now?

Edhill, you are a terrific writer and you never fail to crack me up with your quips.

I too was blubbering at the ending scene. It was the emotional pay off we have all been waiting for. We needed it after so much tragedy. I’m glad Sun and Jin like eachother again. It bummed me out that Locke and Eko said so little to eachother. I thought Jack handled the whole Kate whispering in Sawyers ear and tenderly rubbing his face situation pretty stoicly. If I were him I would have waited until they walked away from Sawyer and said “Since when have you two been so chummy?” because Kate was definitely crossing the “concerned friend” line.
But of course, Jack played it cool which is smarter in the long run. Judging by the previews I think Kate is about to get delusional and have some weird hallucinations. Maybe she will be the first to get “the sickness.”

How big is this island anyway? Doesnt it seem weird that they have traveled all these different places on the island and never seen evidence of “Others” living anywhere? And where the heck are they parking that big boat they stole Walk with? Is there a Marina that no one has noticed? I hope that they band together to find Walt and the other kidnapped people and start by walking the perimeter of the island to figure out where that boat is shored. It seems too big to be pulled up on the beach manually.

This is just a guess based on the promo but I have a feeling that when Kate is with Sawyer in the hatch he is going to say something that he couldn’t possibly know, either something the doctor she got killed in the first season or whomever else she has killed would say or know, which causes her to freak out. But that’s just my theory.

As an aside I hope, hope, hope this episode is very light in the Ana Lucia department not because I hate her because I really don have a problem with the character or as seems the case with most people the actress but reading comments about the show is so much more fun when every other one isn’t “I hate AL she is such a bad actress, blah blah blah.”

That drives me nuts! I hope that now that everone is together, the are fifnished with this device of having two episodes in a row end with the exact same scene and we can start to move forward again. Plus, I don’t think Kate has the sickness, I have a theory that she killed her father because he was abusive, and that’s why her mother freaked out on her when she went to visit her in the hospital. Just my theory, though, I guess we’ll find out soon enough, or maybe we won’t. Maybe the next episode in January will end the same way the one tonight does.

In the first or second episode of season one, Claire asks Kate is she’s a Gemini (and she is). Gemini is an astroligical sign for the twins. So I’m thinking everyone has met Desmond before at some point and somehow everyone has a twin?? I don’t know, I’m thinking aloud here. Maybe there was a government project that was trying to clone things…. there is a electromagnetic field inside the island which brought the planes there. Anyway…. I do wonder about this sickness thing… hmm… and where the hell did Desmond go? And where’s the french woman? They’ve both been MIA for a while now.

I just read all these comments, and I find it quite funny that everyone acts like Michelle is such a terrible actress. She’s not the greatest, but let’s take a look at Kate, who says sarcasm in the same tone she says sad lines in the same tone she says happy lines in the same tone she is mad…. sort of like Katie Holmes, talking out of the corner of her mouth with a dull, vacant look in her blank eyes and droning the lines like a robot. At least Michelle can stir up a few different vocal tones!

Obviously all those that dislike Ana haven’t ever been pregnant, or had a baby. I have a three month old daughter, and I can completely relate to her rage at the cruel murder of her unborn baby, and think it was completely logical for her to have that anger towards him.

And for the record, I’m really tired of the show revolving around Jack and Sawyer and Kate… I want to see more about Charlie, more about Claire, more about Sun and Jin, more about ANYONE but those three that have three times as many episodes as everyone else.

I missed the show last week because of traveling for Thanksgiving, and I know a lot of people who did the same — so I don’t think it’s Ana that caused the ratings. Sorry haters.

Our collective problem with Ana Lucia is a direct and exclusive result of Rodrigrez’s take on the character.

There are lots of strong women characters I like and buy into 100%, and AL ain’t one of them. Ripley kicks f**kin’ ass, people. Even Xena was kind of a bitch when she wanted to be. But AL just doesn’t work. I don’t buy any of these characters taking sh*t from her– I certainly wouldn’t. First time she tried to “take control” of the situation it would be “go f**k a cactus, Ana”.

There’s just nothing respectable about her– good motivations aside, she comes off completely self-obsessed, self-righteous and coldblooded, and while that sounds good on the paper, the actress doesnt’t pull it off. She grates on the nerves and needs to meet a swift and grizzly end.

About the woman who plays Ana Lucia…I’ve never seen her before in my life. I don’t understand all the ripping on her acting. There must have been some previous show where she was awful, because I’m really not seeing the awful in her performance as AL

I just hope that Ana Lucia doesn’t turn into this season’s Sawyer. With her body count so far it won’t be long before she gets her own video game, Postal IV: Ana Lucia Returns to LA.

Last season Sawyers character went something like: You hate him. Hate him even more. Really hate him.

Then, maybe he isn’t such a bad guy. He did turn over the guns…

Look he is becoming the hard-ass wise cracker of the group, with a great sense of humor even!

He really is a good guy!

Fuck that, I hope Sayid pushes her off a cliff when no one is looking.

Good point Craig. I suspect Sawyer is going to be the Luke of Lost. Anyone remember Luke from GH? One minute he’s a lowlife rapist the next he’s Laura’s hero.

How easily we all forget someone was a scumbag. I mean Sawyer was willing to let Shannon keel over from asthma – then again – it was Shannon so no big loss.

That was such a soap opera twist, and I haven’t been watching soaps all my life for nothing. NOw to the person who said AL haters must not be parents is dead wrong. I have a baby myself, and I could not at all relate to her loss, because her character is so completely hateable. She seems to be some sort of remorseless killing machine, who will pull out a gun and use it at the drop of a hat. I object to her making her own sort of vigilante justice. The guy shot a cop; he was definitely going down for that.

Well, since this is an army recruiting station, maybe what they were running on the TV in the bacground is an Iraqi recruiting video, kind of like, “If you’re an American hater, fight for the other side. Join the Iraqi army and learn the latest torture techniques!” And Sayid was the star of the informercial.

GoGoHurley: I don’t think you’re a poopyhead. Relax…I was just messin’ with ya when I said you were wrong and we were right, re: AL. It’s all in good fun.

Can’t wait for this week’s recap, so we can start blasting through Kate’s ridiculous backstory.

    Over and out.
