These were two of the worst hours of TV I have seen in a long time. What the hell happened to this show?!
I have to agree with you Jack. WTF? This show has tanked!! And did anyone else see the ‘dancing with the stars’ extended promo towards the end of the two hour debacle? Now that was disturbing!!!
The only cool thing was that guy blowing himself up. Then they abc’d the scene by NOT showing any blood or guts. Come on, the guy is like 10 feet from them, they should be plastered. Not to mention that he was pretty much standing over a case of explosisves. Oh wait, my mistake, there was that one little snot on Jack’s back that freaked out the fat guy.
At least the writers acknowledged that the fat guy is still fat…
It was just a sad, sad two hours with a go nowhere plot.
I am glad that it’s over for the summer. Maybe I will forget all about this show over the summer and never waste another minute watching it again. Although, there is that tempting eye candy in bikini’s that they cast…
That was so disappointing. I feel cheated. What a rip-off. I will just have to accept that, this being a US network show, they will drag this thing on until, thanks to the law of diminishing returns, everybody gives up caring. Like Twin Peaks or X-Files.
What’re you guys smoking? This was incredible, well-paced episodic television. The glut of reality television has made us crave instant gratification, but the episodic television that we all grew up on was exactly like last night’s episode of Lost: answers that lead to more questions, making you want to watch next season. The philosophical break between Jack and Locke will definitely come into play next year, and while the revelation of more of the “others” leads to more questions, they are exciting questions. Where does the hatch go? Is it an exit, or more likely, an entrance to a shelter or tunnel? The final plane montage, where we see the main characters boarding a plane that will take them to a sad fate for each of them, was mesmerizing. The island took them, “re-purposed” them, and now they each have a new destiny. The security system is underground (?), and somehow connected to the smoke thing. The kidnapping of Walt, the shooting of Sawyer, the cliffhanger ending; what’s not to like?
We need to remember what television used to be like, in the days of Twin Peaks, Dallas, V, and other series that made us wait in anticipation for the next season, and the resolution of some great mysteries.
Have faith, people.
Holy shit, I was so riveted, I totally forgot that AI finale was also on. So much to think about — what has already happened (clues finally revealed to make previous clues make sense), what is to come. I had goosebumps a bunch of times.
I also did an impression of a turtle on its back when that dude blew up…holy shit.
I can’t wait to watch the reruns all summer and really pick out all the clues before the next season starts.
Like Jess, I was glued to Lost for the whole 2 hours. While I understand that some people have short attention spans and refuse to put in the time and brain power to follow a show that doesn’t wrap things up in less than one season’s worth of episodes, I can’t relate. A show that just finished one season is not yet dragging things out, especially when it gets strong ratings so obviously people still care to follow. If three seasons from now we still don’t know what’s in the hatch, there will be a problem, but we’re not nearly there yet. I love that we finally have more shows that give us longterm stories and create mysteries and questions we can analyze on our own while anticipating the day we finally get answers.
I thought it was fine, but I’m pretty patient and I don’t get weirded out about ambiguity. The sub-plot of the guys on the boat was pretty riveting and suspenseful. Some definite Spielbergian touches in that one.
They could have cut it down to an hour and it would have been tighter and well paced and not really missed anything. But the longer run-time allowed more views of Evangeline Lilly, Maggie Grace, Emilie de Ravin and Yoon-jin Kim; this is good.
People got frustrated with X-files over the course of its run; the frustration time given to this one is on a much-tighter schedule, apparently.
It probably got too popular too quickly for its own good – rather than develop a core audience of devotees who spread the word (and ratings), it got a big audience off the bat which will likely start bleeding away as people who don’t care for this type of narrative leave in irritation. Execs will see that as a failure and probably have a quick trigger finger, given how expensive the show is to film.
IMO, they do need to tighten it up next year and not rely on the flashback nearly so much.
I would ask those who are irritated: What specifically are you bugged by? Is it that nothing got answered completely and clearly? Is it the padding of the flashbacks? Locke’s mysticism (which may actually be craziness)?
The Lost season finale rocked last night (although I felt that the one hour “pre finale” last week was better overall). Seriously people, who did not get the shivers when Hurley found the numbers on the hatch!?
WHAT? this was awesome! i was constantly screaming about what was going to happen!
did charlie take the heroin? what’s in the hatch? where’s jin? sawyer? is michael going to be okay? what about walt?
?????????????????????????
WHAT? this was awesome! i was constantly screaming about what was going to happen?
did charlie take the heroin? what’s in the hatch? where’s jin? sawyer? is michael going to be okay? what about walt?
?????????????????????????
I keep getting shivers when I think about how they’re going to have to explore the hatch. Like, who’s going to climb down the ladder that seems to never end? What if something chases them faster than they could climb to escape it?
When Walt got taken, I was like, “THAT is what they meant, the Others are coming for the boy.” Shivers again.
For me, all the backstory is so important to how these characters operate, why they’re there…the whole mysticism of it. There are SO many loose threads that can still be picked up for many, many episodes to come and I can’t wait to watch it weave together. Right now, Lost is a friendship bracelet you make at camp. I can’t wait til it becomes a giant afghan.
I sincerely hope we get to finish the story before the networks pull the plug. (And of course, alternatively, I hope it doens’t drag itself out past its prime.)
Wow.
Did anyone see Michelle Rodriguez at all? I didn’t.
The story lacked some sense. There are 40-odd survivors and they never bother to get an accurate idea of how many “others” there are. They have the numbers to band together and defend themselves. Hiding at the caves is silly.
The “others” had a boat with power and gasoline? Why are they on the island at all? Do they live on it or just visit from another island? Are these people even alive? Would they have found Walt if Michael hadn’t fired the flare? Why do they even want Walt? Why is Claire remembering fighting Rousseau? Why was she ever kidnapped? Is Rousseau stupid? Obviously they weren’t talking about taking Claire’s baby.
I say the hatch is a submarine. It could be a bunker, but I’m sticking with the motor vehicle theme. That raft was never going to leave the island. Even the others hadn’t attacked, the raft would have rolled up on the beach the next morning.
And Charlie’s back on the stuff.
I can’t fathom anyone not being flabbergasted by lost. It is a show on TV actually based on imagination and creativity, and not voyueristic hopes that someone is stupider than us and will prove it on live TV. AI is old and tired. Please, It’s glorified karaoke. Lost is evidence people are still thinking on this earth, and encouraging others to do so as well. It doesn’t answer all the questions for you, cuz, once upon a time, people liked doing that for themselves. Reality TV has ruined our TV viewing. The people who didn’t enjoy it obviously don’t have the brain power to try to figure it out. Maybe they have joined Charlie in collecting virgin Marys.
I don’t think Charlie’s necessarily back on the stuff. Think about it: Jack, Said, and Locke all know about the statues full of heroin. Wouldn’t it be easier for Charlie to stash the little baggies, instead of an easily identifiable statue? And let’s not forget about Charlie’s devout Catholic background; maybe he just wanted the Virgin Mary around to help him.
I missed many episodes, so forgive this question, but what the hell was the signifigance of the number that the big guy was chanting to himself and he then noticed inscribed on the hatch?
Drew, the numbers are a recurring plot point. Hurley won the lottery with those numbers, but terrible things started to happen so he thinks they’re cursed numbers. He got the numbers from a man in a mental institution (where Hurley was a fellow patient for a time.) Hurley found out that that man and another guy got the numbers off of a transmission coming from the Pacific. The one guy ended up in the mental institution over those numbers. The other man lived in Australia in the middle of nowhere (to avoid the curse) but killed himself. Hurley was in Australia because after going to the mental institution, he tracked down the other man’s widow in Australia and learned from her about the numbers coming from the transmission. Basically any number you see or hear on screen will be one of, or a combination of, those numbers. For example, Hurley’s run to catch the flight was filled to the brim with them (from the rpm’s in his car to the signs he passed to the amount of money he paid the guy for his scooter, etc.) They were on flight 815, Kate’s time capsule tape was recorded on 8/15, and on and on it goes.
I hope you get the season 1 dvd when it comes out, because there are loads of things that you’ve missed that will continue to be important!
Drew,
There was an entire (very funny) episode devoted to Hurley’s backstory. Basically, he got a series of numbers from a guy he knew in an insane ward. On a whim, he played the numbers in the lottery and won it. Good luck!
Only, it turned out that the money he won also came with an apparent run of extraordinary bad luck. So much so that he became convinced they were jinxed.
He went back to his crazy pal to find out where the numbers came from – the crazy pal had been stationed at a remote Naval listening post and these numbers starting being broadcast over and over again, and he and his partner at the post never figured them out. But ever since, the two Naval guys experienced streaks of a single good thing and a multitude of awful things happen.
Hurley was in Oz to track down the other Naval guy, who had moved all the way to the middle of the Outback to get away from the bad luck. He ended up killing himself, leaving Hurley with no clue as to what – if anything – the numbers meant.
And then we got to see that they were on the hatch…
I was a little frusterated, but in a good way. I still love it.
If you remember an awesome show, “Twin Peaks”, died because they wrapped up all the loose ends at the end of the first season and no one cared to start a whole new mystery the following season. I’m a little afraid that this might happen with Desperate Housewives too. The whole show is based on this mystery that has now been solved. Where do you go?
This episode was awesome. The way that all the main characters lives have been intertwined, both on the island and in the backstories is amazing. This writing team makes my head spin- they are incredible.
To answer a few questions above:
Michelle Rodriguez was on part I last week. She met Jack in a bar, and apparently was on the same flight. But we haven’t seen her since then….did she get on the flight? Did she perish? Does she have a story or was it just an insignificant conversation? She talked to Jack about his dad, and also asked Jack if he was married. He replied, “Not any more.” Can’t wait to see the back story on that.
Drew- the numbers are all related. The numbers on the hatch are the numbers that Hurley used to win the lottery. The numbers are apparently “cursed”. That’s why Hurley was screaming not to open it. The number 23 also was significant to Kate, as the person who turned her in received a $23,000 reward. And the Oceania flight number was 815- 8 and 15 are two of the numbers in this sequence. These numbers also appeared on some of the papers that Sayid took from Danielle. And, I think they may have been seat numbers for some of the passengers?
My question to you all is this- what/who has Locke seen that makes him so unafraid of everything that’s going on? Why did he tell Jack to let him go when that “thing” had a hold of him? WHAT DOES HE KNOW THAT THE OTHERS DON’T? I think that Locke is really the key to all of this. Just me guessing! I LOVE THIS SHOW! Sorry for the long post….
I think the numbers were also the reason Rousseau and her team crashed on the island – they were investigating the transmission of the numbers as well. She even wrote them on one of the pieces of paper that Sayid found. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of them.
Jack was in seat 23, I think and Michelle Rodriquez was in 42F.
Where did Hurley end up sitting? 20 or 22, if I remember correctly in a vague way?
And why was he NOT supposed to get on that flight–when so obviously all his numbers connect everyone and the numbers are on the hatch?
Holy shit, I love this show.
while i’m not *sure* that locke is the key to all of this, do you remember when boone died and locke went back to the hatch and freaked out and banged on the door and then the light turned on? does that mean he was pretending to be surprised at the long tunnel-y thing?
and also, didn’t those numbers hurley have come from his crazy friend in the psych hospital? and the reason he WENT to australia is because he was trying to find out what they were about? i’m asking, i don’t really remember.
i say, take all the heroin and just pass it around. man, there’s NOTHING to do on that island. they can all have fun, at least.
I’m kind of pissed that I read all these interviews with the actors and producers from Lost saying the cliffhanger was incredibly jaw dropping. While Walt getting taken was pretty unexpected, the whole hatch thing was unbelievably anti-climactic.
BIG DEAL!!!! We waited 9 months to find out it’s a big, deep, apparently empty hole. Wow, who’s the genius who thought that up????
And they made all these promises that they’d show part of the monster (lie #1), and while creating new questions, would answer some old ones (lie #2).
I’m totally disappointed, that was the lamest season ender ever.
I almost would’ve rather to watch the-fluff-filled 2 hours of AI. At least I would’ve been expecting inane nonsense if I watched AI.
This is starting to go the pointless, wasting hours of my life route of Twin Peaks. Very annoying.
Not a fan of the “in” humor they did. Such as when the guy was saying to hurley that there are more than just 8 people on the island, does the chinese guy fish for any of them, some of us have lost weight, crap like that.
Damnit!! Thats my Job!
MYL
MYL, I thought it was funny that they had Artz address the very things we’ve all been pointing out (like how all important conversations revolve around the same few people out of the larger group of lostaways and how they don’t appear to be losing weight.)
Jillie, you’ve picked out some of the occurrences of the numbers, but basically any hint of a number being used on this show, even if it’s just in the background, goes back to The Numbers. They are everywhere.
I would say that The Numbers would make a good drinking game, drink whenever you see or hear a mention of one of the numbers, but that would have us all falling down drunk by the end of some episodes! (Like last night, where Hurley’s dash to the plane was one number after another.)
As for Locke, I think he wants to form the Lockensian Island Cult and act as the high prophet. He’s ready, the island has spoken to him!
where is papercuts!? i started watching this show because s/he made it sound so interesting. does anyone know when the dvd comes out, i need to catch up.
lost is just a huge shaggy dog story. i would like the show if i had any confidence that the writers were going to deliver answers at some point, but i’m pretty sure they haven’t thought that far ahead. writing a show that confuses the audience just for the sake of being confusing isn’t difficult, and doesn’t impress me. i’m pretty sure the joke is on us.
Here’s my tribute to the end of Lost:
http://www.trekology.com/?p=30
If Yahoo TV listings are to be believed, ABC will be rerunning the series this summer. From what I can see, at least for MY local ABC station, next Wednesday, 6/1, at 10PM is the pilot episode. I really hope they intend to rerun the whole thing…
I have to disagree with Lame.
They showed part one of the monster. It’s this puff of black smoke that gathered and flew away after the dynamite scene. This was not dynamite smoke. And the monster “security” system is perhaps a machine. You hear gears turning and a chain, but we never get to see it other than the black smoke that was shown then, and earlier.
Questions answered…they answered some more. We know Jin was blackmailed by his father-in-law. We know “Sawyer” is looking to kill the only man he’s ever written a note to: Sawyer.
The bigger question remains though, is Boone going to be resurrected from the dead? He was buried underground, and this island of Faith and Mystery could bring him back in a plot twist…body snatching anyone? And his sister is saving all of his clothes.
And did anyone notice that piece of log floating in the water when the rutter broke? Where did that drift wood come from? Or is it even significant?
I went into last night’s episode wondering how the hell they were going to tie up even half the unsolved mysteries of the season. Instead, they basically addressed none of them and just piled on a few more.
My wife (who hasn’t been watching) asked if I was mad — I replied “No way! Now I get to be freaked out every week next year, too!”
Wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. This is definitely the best thing to happen to non-cable television in a while. Can’t wait to see the ridiculous copycats it’s going to spawn….
CSI:NCIS::Lost:????
1. Didn’t we see a piece of what was dragging Locke through the jungle? It looked like rusty chain/shackle. Definitely mechanical aspect to the beast.
2. Why was Locke paralyzed? I assume he recovered fine from his duped kidney transplant, then decided to go on the walkabout, right? So why paralyzed? Am I one of those annoying people asking an obvious question?
I don’t get the bitching about the finale. Unlike most TV, I actually watched every minute of it, without a newspaper or magazine to read at the same time.
It was scary and suspenseful. We saw more the monster — in the sense that we now know the monster is basically invisible. We saw the first “new” people on the island in a long time — the Deliverance guys on the boat.
Did it have to be two hours? Not really. The dynamite stuff didn’t need to be so drawn out. But I liked it.
i also missed most of the season, but will watch the DVDs as soon as they’re around…
What was with John’s backstory? He had to be carried on to the plane, and then when he dropped the emergency procedures card, it looked like he was unable to use his legs to get it, but of course on the island he’s fine. Zuh???
I love Lost, I just hate all of the commercials that ABC makes us watch during it. I missed the second half of the finale, but I thought the first part was good. I wanted to see what was in the hatch, but I guess they cant let us know too much first season or there wouldnt be as much to uncover in the second season.
It’s ALL about the Numbers – we are starting to see that all the main characters have the numbers connected to them. And i think that Locke knew about the numbers BEFORE he went to Australia, that’s why he wanted to go on the walk-about in the first place – there appears to be a “cult of numbers” . . .
Re Locke Disability Issues. There were two entire episodes devoted to Locke’s disability prior to the plane crash, and then his ability to walk again once he crashed on the island. That’s why he’s so fascinated with the island folks. It cured him. Watch the reruns. I’m kind’ve with B-Side though. They could have resolved at least one issue, sort’ve like Desperate Housewives did, rather than just creating more. I’m afraid this show may get the “Alias” treatment, and get dumbed down, if they don’t get a little less cryptic.
Granted it wasn’t as good as it could of been. I won’t be talking about it all summer like the producers said everyone would be. But I definetly will watch it when it returns.
And it still beats that American Idol show!
Well, help me out here. I don’t have TiVo nor stacks of VHS tapes at my disposal. If the disability issue can be summed up in a few sentences, throw a girl a bone. I know i’m not the only one asking. I GET that the island restored him. I GET that he was able to walk before. I happened to miss the first couple of episodes, I’m just looking for a little friendly help. So please, offer me a little friendly help so I’m not stymied and asking more obvious dumb questions. ‘K?
I thought it was great, it’s better than most movies Hollywood puts out and I wish it did play in a movie theatre instead of t.v.!
Fucking awesome finale! I taped it and watched it twice in a row!
After devoting 9 months of my life to this series, I’m extremely disappointed.
If a puff of smoke counts as showing part of the monster, then they way overpromised.
And there are a million questions out there about all these characters. They could’ve answered at least a few instead of creating tons more.
The things tribecatexan listed as the big reveals, that we find out Jin was being manipulated by his father-in-law and Sawyer wanted to kill the guy who ruined his family… that makes no sense to me. Have you caught every episode? These facts are nothing new. They were revealed in the Sawyer and Jin flashback episodes way earlier in the season.
I’m beginning to wonder if the writers have any idea where they’ve going with this. Not sure if I have the patience to be strung along for years with this show if they’re never going to give us some gratification for the multitude of questions they’ve created.
Jess,
I’ve seen every episode and unless I missed something, we have not been clued in on how Locke became paralyzed yet. Hope that helps!
This finally was actually the first episode I watched, but I am def hooked.
So maybe I missed something but it seems to me that maybe the hatch will actually lead into the heart of the beast as it were. You know like some sort of control room for the apparently mechanized defense system.
here’s an answer–
thanks! I was doing all sorts of blog/forum research all over the place and couldn’t find the answer, so I was pretty sure the “how” hadn’t been revealed yet. I appreciate the answer! You helped a girl out! Thanks!
I think that we got a lot of information over the past two episodes. We now know what the Black Rock is, and, probably, what it was for … but now there’s the mystery of how it got there, and what else has happened there. We now know that the ‘monster’ is, at least partly, some sort of underground mechanical system (the trees were blowing up from the bottom, and Locke was grabbed by some sort of chain/winch apparatus that led underground). But new mysteries … what the hell is that living smoke thing, and who’s controlling it? We now know that the hatch leads to some deep underground something … part of the monster? Finally, we now know that ‘the Others’ are a bunch of seabillies who like to kidnap kiddies … why, and how they got there? Still to be revealed. I just think that they’re taking their time telling the story, and for each piece of the puzzle that they reveal, you see that there’s a few others covered that you didn’t know about before. Would the show really be all that interesting if they explained everything all in one swoop?
As for Locke, they’ve done 2 episodes about him … in the first, they didn’t show you that he was in the wheelchair before the crash until the last minute, so it was a surprise. In the second, he was not paralyzed yet. So that’s still to be revealed…
dumbanddumber-
I don’t think they even came close to revealing what the monster is. I don’t know why everyone is so positive it’s something with links and chains. I rewound several times and the blurry shot of Locke’s feet they showed appeared more animal-like with fur to me. But how they hell can you tell when you only get .5 seconds worth of viewing it?
As for explaining everything all at once, I don’t think anyone’s asking for that, but a little revelation would be nice. And after an entire season of patient viewing with absolutely nothing revealed, I think the viewers are owed that.
In my opinion, the monster’s even more of a mystery now, not at all an answer to anything.
O.K., I thought in the second Locke flashback episode it was revealed he was paralyzed as an unintended result of donating that organ to his estranged father (long story), or was that even his father? I can’t remember. Anyway, call me stupid. I guess I imagined it.
I thought the first few episodes were innovative and interesting but then I got bored because you can’t base a show on just having everything be one secret after another….J J Abrams is crazy and totally uncreative
I wondered that, too, Bob. BUT, he appeared to be walking fine post-op, when he went to visit his father’s house (and the guard turned him away, and he bled through his shirt, etc.) And wasn’t his walkabout AFTER the transplant? I assume he wasn’t paralyzed when he embarked on a trip to Australia to do a walkabout. I read the recap on ABC (yes, this was the one Locke episode I missed), and it didn’t mention a PEEP about him not being able to walk.
I just reread and realized I sound pissy. I’m not pissy!
I thought Ethan was the one that kidnapped Claire to take her baby away from her, but in the finale they show Claire fighting with Danielle, giving her those scratches on her arm. So, were Ethan & Danielle in cohoots? If not, how could Danielle have overpowered both Charlie & Claire when they were kidnapped on that trail? Not sure if Danielle is “evil” or “good.” Maybe just nutso.
Bob,
The kidney donation didn’t cause Locke’s paralysis. After the operation, when his father left him at the hospital, Locke drives to his father’s house, emerges from the car, stands up, and tries to get into his father’s mansion, but is not allowed. I believe they showed another scene after that where Locke discusses this with his mother and is also shown to be standing and still able to walk.
Amy,
I was wondering the same thing, but concluded that maybe while it was Ethan who kidnapped Claire, it could have been Danielle who tried to attack Claire while she was sleeping during that one episode. Not sure, but that might explain it.
O.K., last post and I’m back to work. You’re right “Locke’s Paralysis”. Locke was walking after the operation. Me dumb. And Jess, I’m stepping out on a limb here, but I think Locke was actually paralyzed when he left for Australia, because all his co-workers were hazing him for being so stupid as to go and attempt it. But “Locke’s Paralysis” has a much better memory than me and apparently a kinder disposition, so maybe so sage words of advice can come from that direction. Later ya’ll. And boy, did the Alias season finale suck. But that’s another blog.
Who’s decision was it to make the survivors cowards? Why would a posse 40-strong decide to run and hide? They should have spent time circling up on the beach, arming themselves and organizing lookouts and sentry shifts. Or they should have marched toward the smoke signal. What are the odds the “others” have nearly as many people in their group?
The idea that they would all descend into an unfamiliar underground structure with only one apparent exit is stupid. Have they heard of duck’s in a barrel? Maybe the “others” would simply reseal the hatch and suffocate/starve these fools.
I’m just sayin’.
I was almost positive locke’s paralysis was caused from the surgery. While they never explicitly stated that, I thought it was fairly clearly implied. Also, Locked was in a wheelchair when he went on the walkabout. That’s why he was on the flight back to LA… the walkabout company wouldn’t allow him to go on the trip once he showed up in a wheelchair and therefor purchased his ticket back to the States.
Yay! more info! I’m glad!
Sorry, Bob, I really didn’t mean to have an “unkind disposition”. I have my serious work-hat on, not my fun post-on-TVGasm-hat.
Locke *was* paralyzed when he went to Australia to do the walkabout. That’s why they wouldn’t let him go. I don’t think we’ve been told how he was paralyzed, or really how he was cured. He woke up from the crash and was able to wiggle his toes. Although — he works in a box factory. Hurley owns a box factory. therefore.. I don’t know.
The Arntz splosion was intense.. reminded me of Mean Creek.
You can read the transcript of the Locke backstory at

[Locke driving, angry and hitting the rear-view mirror, the roof of the car. He stops the car and screams.
Scene switches to Locke in the jungle kneeling and crying at the hatch.]
I always assumed after realizing he was used by his father, and driving erratically, he was involved in an accident that left him paralyzed….but, who knows
Agreed with “you got a piece of arntz” (was that not the best line of the show?!! Too funny. OK, sick, but Hurley’s just so damn funny.)
Locke was definitely shown able to walk after donating the kidney, and in the other Locke flashback show they aired, he was in a wheelchair in all the flashbacks, from the time he he was working in an office (it was a box factory and Hurley owns a box factory… hmmm, intersting tidbit “piece of antz,” I missed that) to when he made it down to Australia to do his walkabout.
If anyone needs more details, tvtome.com’s episode list offers a lot of in-depth info on all the episodes.

First of all, I am not worried about Walt. Don’t forget that he has special powers. Now as far as the boat people go, why is everyone convinced that they are “the others”? I’m not. It didn’t even occur to me until I started reading the comments here.
Second, as far as being disappointed in the finale, I am disappointed that NO questions were answered. However, I am not disappointed in the overall storytelling.
Locke was paralyzed when his father who he’d never known needed a kidney transplant, he gave it to him, the father left, and he was left paralyzed because of it. He was in the wheelchair when he wanted to go on the walk-a-bout but they wouldn’t let him so they sent him back to the airport.
I enjoyed the episode, found it entertaining, but when I think about it, it didn’t answer any questions, just added more questions and so while I’m bummed, it was entertaining and that’s all you can really ask for.
Clearly the kidney transplant episode was about 20 years before the plane crash. I don’t think Locke’s paralysis has anything to do with it either.
Maybe the island is like Narnia and time in the outside world goes by differently than it does on the island.
Amy H- I believe Danielle to be slightly nutso but not really evil. 16 years on a freaky island without any friendly people and having lost a child in some manner… be it the ‘others’ or natural death would do that to a person. She seemed to have enough of a grasp on reality to realize what she had done a the end when Sayid got the baby back.
As for the scratches my theory is that Ethan took her and Danielle tried to help her, and save her from the fate that she had already suffered. What can I say I am an optimist. Claire struck out because she was confused, tired and scared.
Is there gonna be a Romber wedding recap?
Personally, I don’t really blame Danielle for taking the baby and trying to trade it for her own. Not that I’m saying it’s right, it’s still completely wrong. But if you lose something you love dearly and you find a way to possibly get it back, well, most people would do it.
Did anyone catch GMA with the ‘Lost’ scene? There was a promo for one right? My sister doesn’t remember one but she ffowards through commercials and I surf so I wasn’t sure. If any one can recap here or email me it would be much appreciated.
Jess,
To reiterate what the others above have pointed out, Locke WAS wheelchair-bound before the crash. One reason why the ABC recap of his first flashback doesn’t mention it is that it was a major twist at the end of that episode (#4). The second flashback was set before the first flashback (Locke had more hair and a nasty fake tan), and yes he could walk then, even after the operation. HOW he was paralysed, we have yet to find out. Just like we have yet to find out about how Jack’s marriage ended, or how Kate first found herself on the wrong side of the law, etc., etc. Those of you expecting less flashbacks in the second series will be disappointed! There’s plenty more histories to explore. Me, I thought that they were what made the show interesting.
However, some gratification would have been good last night. There’s a tunnel under the hatch — like I’d never have guessed.
Other random notes:
I believe that the raft hit some rocks that caused the rudder to fall off. That was the tip of them we saw in the water, not “logs.”
But where did Michael get the rope to save Sawyer, anyway?
One more thing that no one seems to be discussing is the larger island(s) that the raft passed, could that be where the “pirates” live? When Steve was killed, Locke suggested that the attacker(s) came from the ocean. Also, the cable that Sayid found and traced back to the French woman, where does the other end, the one that runs into the sea, lead to?
LauriL–
Admittedly, not much of the monster was shown. But you could sure hear it last night … Locke getting pulled through the jungle sounded just like a roller coaster being pulled up the first hill, so I think that it’s pretty clear that there’s some sort of chain with machinery involved. I don’t know if that’s all there is, and I sure don’t know what that weird smoke was. Locke sure did look scared last night, so I actually wonder if what you saw last night is different from what he saw and what ate the pilot earlier in the year…
the deleted scene they showed on tv this morning was one with Claire and Charlie, and Claire saying she didn’t want to name the baby yet because she was afraid they would come back for it (forgot if its a she or he, so for me, it’s an it)…..nothing to special which is why they left it out i assume
I was kind of disappointed. I understand the cliffhanger thing, but I think we were owed more of a hatch explanation than we got. Lost has frustrated me a lot since the very beginning, when the crash survivors didn’t organize at all, prioritize water and food finding and gathering, or kick the shit out of Sawyer when he bogarted all the supplies. It just didn’t seem realistic in any way. Even now characters act in unreasonable and unrealistic ways all the time, and it bothers me to the point that I don’t want to watch it at times.
It’s a good show overall, and I like the actors a lot, and their characters. Locke is an interesting guy, and I like how dark and nutty Kate turns out to be. But it annoys me that Jack loses it so often, and is demonizing Locke for being faith-based even though he knows very well the island is at the very least a place where scientific logic doesn’t apply, if not possessed by weird spirits of some sort.
And why don’t they destroy the heroin, or save some of it for medical necessities? They know Charlie is a junkie, it’s like they’re trying to kill him.
Anyways, it’s a good show despite silly inconsistencies. And I think it was a log, not rocks, that knocked the rudder off. And Locke was hit by a car after he had his kidney taken out, which is how he got paralyzed.
Here’s another theory that I have:
The scratches on Rousseau arm are a red herring. I think she got them when rescuing Claire from Ethan. After all, Claire doesn’t remember what happened when she was abducted, and it never made sense (to us viewers, or to Jack and Sayid) that Ethan would have let her escape easily. So, perhaps Rousseau found Ethan’s hideaway and untied (or whatever) Claire. But the confused Claire didn’t reaize that she was being set free, and fought-off Rousseau. What do you think of my theory?
Uncle Mikey,
Locke does not have a car crash. As some form of tease, the first “crashback” scene of episode 19 has Locke being knocked over in a supermarket parking lot, but he was not seriously injured. At the end of that episode, where Locke drives away from his father’s house. Locke has a fit of rage, punches the rearview mirror, etc. but he stops the car himself (to have a nice cry!). There was no crash. The next scene was the final one for that episode, where Locke gets frustrated with the hatch, and then the light inside it comes on.
By the way, at the start of episode 19 is a recap from episode 4, when Locke says to the Walkabout rep that he has lived with his disability for four years.
Clearly, I did not see episode 4. I readily admit that. And I really, sincerely, with a sunny disposition, thank you all for dealing with what I’d already deemed to be a dumb, obvious question. Yay!
That said, I’m looking forward to learning about Locke’s disability in season 2!
Buh-bye!
I don’t understand all the confusion about Locke’s paralysis. If you watch his first flashback episode, you never see him standing, walking, or doing much of anything until you see he’s in a wheelchair at the end of the episode. There is a scene where he’s talking on the phone with the phone-sex girl, but he’s in bed, and completely prone. Clearly, he had lost the use of his legs by this point.
As to the flashbacks: it’s called character development. It’s a lost art, in my opinion, and one that is hardly used anymore. People seem not to have the patience for it these days, and anything that further explains a character’s history, mindset, and motivation is viewed as superfluous information. Shame.
I thought this (combined with last week’s) episode was perfect. Perfectly paced, not too much information. I understand people might be dissapointed that they didn’t find out what the moster/hatch/others are, but such is the nature of television. They have to hook you into watching next season; by giving us subtle clues and hints as to the mysteries of the island and its guests, they are creating a sense of intrigue. It’s quite refreshing, actually. I can’t remember the last time a TV show got its claws into me like this one has.
There are a lot of theories floating around the web as to the nature of the island and the show itself; seeing as how we don’t know much, any one of these theories are feasible. But that’s what makes it so appealing, isn’t it? The power of an individual’s imagination. Think about it: when you go see a horror movie, it’s usually not until the last reel that you get to see the monster. But until that point, you, as a member of the audience, formulate your own mental picture of this guy; because everyone watching is a different person, with their own fears and phobias, each person’s version of the monster is unique. The things in your head that only YOU know about are the most powerful – but nothing can ever compete with your imagination. Remember how the “first” Star Wars movie dissapointed everybody? That’s because each and every fan spent twenty years making up their own personal perfect version of the movie.
I think we’re in for a wild ride. I think this whole first season was setting the mood, the environment, the situations, the motivations. In season 2, we’ll know how Shannon can be a total C and not even care; we’ll know that we can’t trust a word that comes out of Kate’s mouth; we’ll already understand Sawyer’s reasons for being the way he is. The writers can then concentrate on fleshing out the island. It’s akin to the first Lord of the Rings movie, setting up everything, then really getting into it in the Two Towers. Personally, I can’t wait, and I think that the ADD’s out there need to relax and just enjoy the ride.
But that’s just my two cents.
I dunno, Hlnha, I have to go back and watch it again on my Tivo, but they certainly made the confrontation seem agressive, and not at all like rescuing. The thing that’s sort of annoying about it, (as I also found with the “monster” shots) is that they were so ambiguous they could be sold in any number of ways later down the road, because none of us “got a real look” at anything.
After reading through this thread to see if my interest would be piqued for its summer reruns, I’ve concluded that I’m not quite self-satisfied enough to be a “Lost” fan.
Bravo, Mike! Thanks for the first laugh-out-loud comment on this thread! And thanks for the reality check — I was getting caught up in it too.
Maybe I misunderstood the scene with Danielle and Claire, but I thought it was taking place not when Claire was abducted but just before then when someone came to her while she was sleeping at camp and tried to grab her. She woke up, screamed, and kept telling everyone that someone had tried to hurt the baby. Jack thought it was psychological and didn’t really happen, then when Claire disappeared not long after, he felt bad for not believing her. So I took the Danielle thing to be that–Danielle is the one who came to camp while Claire was sleeping, but then Ethan kidnapped Claire and Charlie later.
Mike, being self-satisfied has nothing to do with it. Being satisfied by a tv show that involves more and requires more investment than the typical and formulaic procedural dramas and reality shows that proliferate these days is the satisfaction we all draw from Lost.
Isn’t it enough to just enjoy the show? I like not knowing it all at once, I like all the speculation, even when I’m dead wrong. I just like it! Is that wroooooooong? <–said in Harvey Firestein voice.
Just cracking wise. Nothing but love for “Lost” fans and all fellow TVgasmics.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think somewhere there’s a bottle of Strattera calling my name…
I was pretty let down by the episode. I can’t explain it exactly, I’ve been really into “Lost” since the first episode but about 3/4 of the way into the finale I just felt like I didn’t care what happened to them anymore. Kill them all off and I’d be fine with it.
Maybe I was expecting too much from it, this is the first time I felt like ‘wow, the writers really are just making this up as they go along.’ I can’t blame them though, they don’t know how long the show will last so they have to strech the plotlines and keep things pretty fluid to accomodate.
I think that they still deserve a little bit of the benefit of the doubt. Now, if it takes them two months to figure out a way to get down that shaft, and when they get down there, there’s some big old door they can’t get into … then I’ll start to agree that they’re making it up as they go along!
No, Jess, you’re not wrong – I too am enjoying the aspect of not knowing everything. In this day of instant gratification, it’s a nice change of pace to sit back and just enjoy an entire season and wait until this fall to get “the rest of the story.”
“Now, if it takes them two months to figure out a way to get down that shaft, and when they get down there, there’s some big old door they can’t get into …”
MYST – The TV series!
here I go, talking out of my ass again, but my roommate commented that this show reminds her of that book “House of Leaves”. Anyone know what she’s talking about? I remember reading an excerpt of the book, just to help her figure out what they were trying to explain, about some door that appears on the inside of the room in the house but not from the outside, so apparently, it’s a portal to something else or something? Again, I’m 100% talking out of my ass. Just wanted to throw more junk out there for us to chat about, cuz we haven’t had enough to say already!!
Jess, you may find http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com handy. They have lengthy recaps of each episode. For example, the “Walkabout” episode that everyone keeps referring to has a 10 page recap.
Am I the only one who doesn’t like Kate?
Look, before we get all excited about LOST, let’s remember: ALIAS BLOWS. The writers gave up on that show, and since LOST is also J.J. Abrams’, I have my doubts that he has a plan for this show, too. All these little “gotcha!” episodes could end up just being traps on this voyage to ratings for ABC.
But then again, it’s enjoyable. Give us something to work with, J.J.!
I think in “real time” they have only been on the island for 3 weeks….
Victoria, you are not the only one.
In fact, my hatred for Kate is bordering on unhealthy. She’s such a bad actress. How about a reaction that doesn’t look like she smelled something bad?
Exdos I-III felt like a conversation with an obstinate child. Despite promises of peeks at the monster and major cliff hangers loyal fans were given nothing more than smoke and shadow. A recent TV Guide article mentioned producers reference to a surprise so big that for the sake of secrecy it merited it’s own code word, ‘the bagel’.
After watching all three back to back, I am still at a loss to understand what the ‘bagel’ was. Saywer getting shot? We saw this with Locke’s character just two episodes previous. Didn’t seem to slow him down much. Was it the kidnapping? Was this the new twist? Wasn’t Claire already kidnapped? (And anyone remember her baby from about 15 minutes ago??) This isn’t new and it’s hardly surprising. This is rehash.
As far as the glimpse into the hatch goes – it’s deep. What kind of dramatic beat is that to end on?
My writer’s sense is telling me that it was not out of carefully orchestrated plot disclosure that they gave us nothing more. They did so because they have nothing more to give. I am begining to suspect that they themselves don’t understand the story they are trying to tell. That they are buying themselves time until they figure out what they themselves don’t yet know. Now that is a twist I didn’t see coming. One, I might add, more frightening then any monster.
Last night the writers gave the faithful no new revelations save one, unseen in the series until now. The show’s mediocrity.
The “LOST” finale was so damn lame. The only good part was when Walt got taken by The Others. Other than that, J.J. can BLOW me!!
He DID redeem himself, however, with the “Alias” finale. Or whoever wrote it.
J. Puckett– I just have this to say: “Alias” does NOT blow. Thank you. Now I’m off to snort some coke and write nasty letters to J.J. Abrams.
Watching the end of the repeat of the season finale, it occurs to me that “The Others” wanted Walt all along. They never wanted Claire’s baby. Rousseau heard them whispering that they were coming for “the boy.” Walt, not Claire’s baby. They knew Walt wasn’t on the island anymore and that’s why they were on a boat looking for him.
I missed it on Wed due to my inability to set my vcr to the correct channel…was glad it replayed on Saturday. I thought it was awesome…my only complaint is having to go all summer without any new edpisodes. C’mon did some of you really expect a nice tidy wrap-up show that would answer all your questions?? That would be fine if it was the series finale…it’s not and everyone bitching will be back next fall to watch, I know I will.
what about the psychic guy in claire’s episode who told her to protect the baby? Doesn’t that mean something would happen to it?
You should all remember that mysteries often have “red herring” clues. Not everything shown may solve the mystery.
In that vain…did anyone notice the bird’s call when it flew from the branch? After Hurley & Co. got the TNT…they are walking back and a big dark bird flies off a branch. Its scream sounds just like “Hur-ley”! Anyone else catch that? I replayed it several times.
i dont know what you guys are talking about but the show answer alot of questions. it answered what the black rock was. we figured out what the black smoke was, and where it was coming from. also we found out who the others were and what rousseau was talking about when she said they were coming for the boy.
personally i thought the episode was great with a lot of unexpected things happening (even though the big gay science teacher dieing was pretty predictable).
also i never realized the significance of all the numbers on the island until i read some of your comments like kate’s reward money for turning her in was 23,000 dollars. i also think that hurley weighs about 815 lbs. so that could be something important too.
