Minicap: Around the World in 80 Plates – Thai Me Up, Thai Me Down

Paddy cake, paddy cake…

Well, it happened kids! Finally! And it almost didn’t happen (I’m looking at you, Nicole…)!

SPOILER ALERT!

Ding dong, the witch is dead! Jenna was retired in Thailand. God, Jenna made me tired. Do we really think she just got the bitch edit or was she really, you know, a bitch? Apparently, there is evidence in both cases.

We returned to the 3 team system this week, bringing back the flavorless White team to join the old faves – the Red and Black teams.

White – Avery and Jenna

Red – Liz and Nicole

Black – Nookie and John

There was coconut shaving, rice paddy planting, rice paddy running, rice paddy diving, (Nookie – hee hee) larb, the scent of green papaya, vending of the local delicacies. Yes, folks, all in all I would say this was a fairly action packed episode.

Now that the most obvious villain has been sent packing, who do we hate now? And who is the favorite? Honestly, I have yet to commit to anyone. Everytime I decide on who to root for, they screw it up (I’m looking at you, Nicole…)

Nicole preparing to literally throw Liz under the bus

When in doubt, root for Nookie I suppose.

Full recap in a couple days. Thanks for Plating it up with me!

@Foggywood, Jenna must read your recaps because she sent me a friend request on Facebook. I guess this is the drawback to using your real name on this site. :-)

Jenna’s whole disgust at the watering down of the drink was rich considering she and Avery actually CHEATED at the first challenge by sneaking cocoanut water into the bottom of their bowls to heavy weight them and fool the scale. I still can’t believe no one caught it or called them out on it later. On Survivor there are people tasked with catching stuff like that and it bites you in the ass later when you’re called on it. On this fake ‘cooking’ competition I guess anything at all goes as long as you ‘win’. I will say this again: this show has eff all to do with cooking or who is the best chef or now even who is actually winning squarely within the stated rules. It is just a food version of Lord of the Flies. I can only hope that this is the only time they try this one.

On the up side, Jenna went home. Although Avery also cheated, Nookie watered down his drink, John didn’t spice his dish appropriately, and Liz and Nicole both ran out of food and didn’t actually cook anything remotely Thai… This show sucks.

Sorry, I meant to say that on the Amazing Race there are people to catch you not completing a task correctly or cheating. I still compare this more to Survivor than Amazing Race due to the weaseliness of it all, but my comparison of the monitoring was not a Survivor thing it was an Amazing Race thing.

I wish this site let you edit your posts. :/

I know I keep saying it’s a terrible show but I wanted to add that I think it was really just very poorly conceived. I am always astonished that Cat Cora is involved in it because I expected better from her. What I actually think happened here is that they put the show together a la Amazing Race/Top Chef and expected that the contestants would compete with each other and have some integrity and pride in their food and their talent. What has happened though is that by the very nature of the competition they set up and their poor rules of the game they have created a completely different kind of competition that is not about the quality of the food at all but about winning at whatever cost and snaking out the best chefs for elimination first to cut down on the competition. I’m not sure that is what the intention was but they made this result almost inevitable by the way they set it up. Cat and whatsisname seemed shocked that Nookie was doing whatever it took to make the most money, as though that was not what he was told to do. I think they thought pride in his food would trump that but obviously that is not the case.

All the contestants but John pretty much suck for various reasons at this point and it is pretty obvious that who ever wins this will not by any stretch be the ‘best chef’. They will simply be the surviving chef. Aside from the monetary award there isn’t much to brag about there.

    Again, this show sucks.

I agree with others disapointed in this show. That the quality and taste of the food was not relevant in this last challenge (only 150 baht for best flavor – really?) is definitely diminishing my interest in this show. Nothing should matter but how well each chef can cook in these countries. I get they are trying to meld multiple shows together, but ultimately, it has to be about the food, not who can run the fastest or skirt the rules the easiest.
