Minicap: Boardwalk Empire

Jack Huston and Charlie Cox 100911

Atlantic City is in a state of flux as Nucky finds himself with no aldermen (except Fleming), no customers, no booze for his casino and no dirty politicians in his pocket to make the charges go away.  Meanwhile, Margaret gets some news that makes her act squirrelly but manages to remind Katie who’s the lady of the house in no uncertain terms.  Owen’s showing his ambition by already outgrowing his job as a barkeep that he just got in the week between episodes and is offering his special skills and services to Nucky.  When Nuck ask what those skills are he says he’s very good at making people stop.  Stop what?  Whatever Nucky wants stopped.

On the sunnier side of the street, the Commodore is flush with his newly gained power, hair dye, liquor and aldermen.  He decides it’s time to give Jimmy everything Nucky wouldn’t to keep the kid loyal, but Jimmy’s practically dead inside so who knows how much it all means to him.  Meanwhile, Eli finds out exactly where he ranks with his father, and he’s the “Jan.”  In New York, Luciano and Lansky learn that there’s a downside to working with Jimmy.

In one of the weirdest and yet endearing developments Nelson and Lucy have set up house together while she’s pregnant.  He’s still Nelson and carved from a tree, and he’s never taken a stance on anything that he isn’t intransigent about, but she’s actually beginning to have a positive effect on him.  I hope those crazy kids can make it work.

And Mickey Doyle is still a cockroach.

It was a slower and more character driven episode, but gave some lovely insight into several characters.  The full recap will be up in a few days, but in the meantime, here’s a great video that shows exactly how much of Boardwalk Empire is computer generated.  It’s surprising and fascinating.

About

Vallegirl has never actually lived in a valley, has a lot of time on her hands and likes to yell at kids about how things were in her day.  Currently in LA, she's also spent a lot of time in the great states of  New York and Florida so she's not crazy, it's just a cultural thing.

Thanks for the link Vallegirl. The CGI is fascinating and much more extensive than I realized. No wonder they won an Emmy for their special effects.

Owen got a lot hotter when he was in the showdown with Richard. How awesome is Jimmy and Angela’s house? I don’t blame Angela for never leaving. I wouldn’t either. I’ll save my other comments for the full recap, so I don’t inadvertently post some spoiler.

@Fan-Ann – glad you liked that video because I found it really impressive. The boardwalk and beach are impressive because of the scale they have to recreate, but the subtler effect of dumping the body in the water and creating Richard’s injury were what probably won the Emmy. That is some tight detail work and I hadn’t even thought that they digitally altered the scene at sea, let alone to that extent.
