Minicap: Dance Moms

This is your brain on Jabby

Good morning, Gasmii. Can you believe we’re already at the second-to-last episode? What a long, strange trip it’s been. This week we have a first, at least for this season – there was actually more dancing than fighting. Not to say there was no fighting, just not as much as usual.

The girls go to Energy Dance in Michigan where there is a scout from the Joffrey Ballet. (Because the obvious place to find a NYC scout is in Highland, Michigan.) Maddie and Chloe have solos. There are TWO trios that go head-to-head in the same group, one consisting of Brooke, Maddie and Chloe and one comprised of Nia, Paige and my girl Mackenzie. The group number is about plastic surgery, so kudos to commenter maryedith for calling that one!

Chloe is on the bottom of the pyramid this week, followed by Nia and Paige. Mackenzie makes it to level two with Brooke and OF COURSE (do I sound like Christi here?) Maddie is on top AGAIN.

Chloe does forget part of her solo, but she recovers and finishes.

Maddie wins first in her division, but Chloe doesn’t place. The A-team trio of Brooke, Maddie and Chloe win overall but the other trio doesn’t place. The group number also doesn’t place, but Mr. Joffrey Scout invites them to an open audition in NYC, so all is well.

This week’s drama is about how Jabster gives the majority of her attention to Maddie. There’s another mini-altercation between Christi/Kelly and Melissa, who again runs to Jabby for solace before storming out. Melissa’s secret engagement and subsequent threats of legal action are not mentioned AT ALL.

Overall, it was a pretty tame episode, but it was nice to see the girls actually dance for a change.

Thanks so much for all of your comments and detective work last week. I’m so intrigued by all the dirt you guys dug up.

I will have the full ‘cap up in a couple of days, but until then, if you missed last week (or just want to savor the Melissa ridiculousness) you can read it here.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

xoxo,
SnoopK8

I find it hilarious that the Joffrey ballet dude invited the girls to an OPEN AUDITION!! Those cattle calls sure are super exclusive, LOLOLOL.

Looking at Energy’s results page, Chloe DID place for her solo; she got 5th place. And even though Girl Fun didn’t place, they DID get a special judges’ award for being “Balls of Energy”.

Looking forward to the full recap, SnoopK8. Will you be taking on the Miami moms as well????

I hate to pick on little kids, but if you put your kids out there on reality TV it’s fair game right? Does anyone think when Maddie has that high pony tail going on she looks like she has an elongated alien head? ‘Cause her eyes are kinda pop-outty and spaced far apart too. Then she’s got those teeth protruding out of her face…. I feel bad saying that but it makes me not want to look at her.

    Chloe actually got fifth place!
    Here: http://www.energyndc.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Competition-Results-for-Highland.pdf

I also think it’s interesting that Energy Dance has a post on their Facebook that they have now BANNED Dance Moms from filming, although they do feel that a show that brings the spotlight to dance is still pretty okay.
    https://www.facebook.com/energynationaldance

And apparently, pretty much wiped them from the competition. There’s all sorts of photos, but there’s none of “our” girls doing solos, trios, or the group number. Just Maddie winning “Miss Energy” or something like that:

Yes, as soon as I hear the name of the competition, I start googling to see if I can find the results…I can’t STAND to wait until the end of the show!!!!!! You should see me at Xmastime….

I think the girls are going to NYC for the Joffrey Ballet audition, isn’t that what said on the show? The Joffrey Ballet had open auditions in Pittsburgh at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre on February 19. Wonder what scripted drama will occur in NYC that couldn’t occur in the ‘Burgh?

Great minicap, can”t wat to read the full recap.

Also, just FYI, the Joffrey Ballet is in Chicago. Usually ballet companies have auditionas in big cities throughout the country and I think they’re “auditioning” at is in NY.

I really hated the plotline with the scout “inviting” them to an open call audition. ANYONE can go to an open call audition, as long as they pay the registration fee. You don’t get invited to them.

Unfortunately, two blogs are reporting that Maddie got a full scholarship to Joffrey Summer Intensive

Now if she can just get a free scholarship to the Summer Orthodontic Intensive…

Maddie won a full scholarship to the Mia Michaels/Joffery All ages summer intensive. Only one ALDC member got into the actual Joffery Summer Intensive and that was Hope Roberts according to Abby’s website. Honestly Maddie is not a ballet dancer, she is not built for it. If I was a parent of a serious ballerina I would be ticked if a bunch of reality tv kid stars got into something that prestigious. Chloe has the lines for ballet.

Well I’m still snooping in the Westmoreland County court records. I can actually look at the documents, not just the docket sheet. I think Greg’s divorce is going to take some time. The ex wife is dragging her feet, and good for her. Looks like she’s pissed because Greg paid $20,000 to a car dealership from a joint account in December, 2010, and we all know that must be a vehicle he bought Melissa. She must have had a nice house with Kurt, their foreclosure amount is nearly $500K. (Kurt’s fighting that, by the way.)

I’m probably too grouchy to type about or even be watching this show right now.

Because this week I got to thinking.

Dancing and gymnastics are the most unfair talents to have. Specially girls.

Because for about 95% of them, it’s nature that decides how far they’ll go.

Some teachers, specially in China and Russia or from there, won’t take kids older than like 3 and that don’t have certain body measurements.

They might even make them take an x-ray. Unless it’s illegal where they live.

I mean they can get in the fun and poise for everybody class but not the real 1.

Depending on your ways, that might sound mean.

But what happens when they get boobs? Or just grow out of being long legged and skinny? Which also happens to boys.

After they’ve spent their whole childhood yrs on just that 1 thing. And grown people talking like it’s going to be their career.

Anyway, I hope these girl’s moms tell them Abby’s just saying that stuff for the show.

Also, WTF was up with their makeup this week?

Specially that lipstick! It’s hard to make a little girl look bad. But the wrong color red will do it to anybody.

And that 1 was wrong for every single 1 of them!

I like Christi, I really do, and I’m totally down with what she says about her being the muscle so Chloe doesn’t have to, I do that too. And I know she has said that Chloe wants to stay with Abby, but, once the show is over I REALLY hope Christi will make the executive decision to pull that beautiful girl out of that studio and put her someplace where she will be valued and encouraged. Chloe is NEVER going to respond well to the negative reinforcement at Abby’s, she NEEDS the positive reinforcement that other teachers use, or she will NEVER have the confidence to beat the Maddies of the world, even though she is much more talented. Even if she thinks she wants to stay with Abby, sometimes moms have to do what is best for their kids, which is not always the same thing the kid wants. So please, Christi, take Chloe to someone who will appreciate her and focus on her, not intentionally psych her out to get her favorite ahead. She may not be happy about it initially, but she will thank you later.

Huh?! In ALL sports, an athlete’s body type is a major determinant of her potential success. Know the names of any skinny bodybuilders? Lanky judo practictioners? Stocky yogis? Extremely tall ballerinas? Short basketball players? Fat quarterbacks? Nope, because no matter how hard these athletes work, they won’t get to the top of their sports. So? They can have fun, make friends and enjoy a lifelong discipline.

Interestingly, Christi hit on that in her tweets yesterday. A follower said “other studios will pull [out] if they know you’re coming. And not because your better. Our industry hates the show.” And Christi responded with a sad face and “I know. I worry about our girls futures.”

Now, maybe that’s true about what competition organizers might think of the Dance Moms girls. But for Chloe long-term, as a dance student and performer? This show is, frankly, an excellent audition tape. I wouldn’t doubt if several east coast studios make offers to Chloe to come and dance with them, based on what they see in the show. (Do studios make offers like that, or hand out scholarships like for college? I wouldn’t know.)

I am going to say I don’t like the mean comments about the little girls looks either. I think the little girls are the one decent thing about this show as far as they are so sweet to each other and lovely little girls and so talented.

I know when I was young about 5-6 I was taking dance at this one dance studio. A ballerina from this serious ballet academy came and looked at all the dancers. She looked at me and asked me to show her my natural turn out. That is how far your feet can spread apart in first position. She said I had an amazing natural turnout and had potential for being a serious ballerina and that when I was older she would probably accept me at her school. So apparently body things that you are just born with do matter for serious ballerinas especially.

I would have been kicked out though no doubt once I hit puberty and got big boobs and scoliosis. Not something they can predict by looking at a 5 year old. I knew I was not a ballerina. I wanted to be a rockette because I love tap and have great high kicks. Too bad I was two inches too short. Again, no matter how awesome I danced, because of my height I could not achieve my dream. Life sucks sometimes.

Watch “A Chorus Line” for a good number about that where they talk about a great dancer never getting picked for jobs because she was not hot enough.

Totally agree with you, this will be Chloe’s audition tape. Chloe is so young and such an amazing dancer. My little one is 7 and also takes dance. My girl memorizes the routine in a heartbeat, but for some reason can’t keep up with the music. Our ‘studio’ is different, we have a recital during the summer before their break. I have not heard of any competitions for the little kids…and honestly I don’t want her to be in any.

There are a LOT of little girls across the country who can dance as well as these girls. And they don’t carry reality tv baggage with them. One more season of this show and none of these girls will be fit for anything but more reality tv. I don’t see Christi pulling Chloe out anytime soon, though. Of all the moms she seems to get the most enjoyment out the of the drama.

Spud Webb is only 5’7″ tall and about 140 pounds. During his NBA career he made over 8000 points, almost 2000 rebounds, and over 4000 assists. He also won the 1986 NBA Slam dunk contest. Just saying ;)
IMO its more about heart and skill than body type. talent comes in all shapes and sizes.

Your height would have been a factor in ballet as well. I was a major bunhead and wanted more than anything to be a professional ballerina. I ended up auditioning for the Princeton Ballet and did really great. At the end of the day I was told that while they’d love to have me I was simply too short. :(

Because you have to start in the corps in a ballet company (unless you’re soooooooooo amazing you can start as a principal which very few people are) Those same height restrictions apply. Although I think the Rockettes use one height rather than a range, but still.

LOVE Chorus Line (what dancer doesn’t)? Funny that you mentioned it because my seven year old was recently bopping around the house singing that very song you mentioned! Apparently my mom has the CD ni her car and doesn’t FF past anything (Cell Block Tango is another fav of his!)

Moli, my little one is 7 as well! Don’t you just love this age? Anyway, he dances on our studio’s competitive team and he loves it. Not all studios, teachers, or studio directors are like Jabby. And just like at the recitals, the little ones at competitions are often the cutest things you will see all day (unless they’re shaking it like they holla for a dolla).

Most studios that have a competitive team also have kids that dance the way your little one does (We call them Rec kids). Frankly THOSE are the kids that keep them in business and their parents cause FAR less drama (in most cases ;) )

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that not all competitive teams are run like Jabby’s. If they were, my kid certainly wouldn’t be doing it.

@Escapee 1st of all I’m saying I’m in favor of all those advantages you said.

That’s why they shouldn’t have to make it their whole life. And have grown people acting like they expect it’s going to be their career when they’re 9.

    Because it’s probably not.

I know body type affects other things too. But getting boobs and a booty happens to almost every girl.

So if they don’t feel like all their eggs are supposed to be in that 1 basket, they’re more liable to be able to still enjoy dancing. Either instead of something else or besides it.

@kittkatt Those kind of super exceptional people are inspiring to learn about. But most kids aren’t going to get in history books or be celebrities.

I totally suck at trying to explain stuff like this. Specially without sounding cheesy. But wanting to be a star and get famous isn’t the only reason to do your best at something. Or the only goal to have.

The problem is that my mother was not pushy at all. She got very annoyed at anything she had to do involved with dance. But I wanted to do it and I was good at it, so she did what she had to which was mostly come up with the money.

Sometimes it is the kids dream, not the parents. It was my dream I came up with all on my own. I didn’t understand the reality of anything as far as making it big in dance. Once I did figure that out around 17 I kinda burned out and gave up. Till then though the only person pressuring me to make it my whole life was ME.

Dance is an unfair talent! I grew up with a mother that was not only a ballet dancer but accomplished in ballroom and belly dancing as well. As soon as I could walk she had me at the San Francisco Ballet in their school. When I turned six the instructor called my mother into the office and told her that though I had an amazing natural turnout I was “cursed” with being short and would NEVER be a company dancer. My mother pulled me and put me in ballroom which I hated. Eventually I found my way to jazz and hip hop but got told over and over “your’re to short”.
