Minicap: DWTS All-Stars

By PopePhilly | | 8:31 pm | 20 Comments

Good evening (or whatever time of day it is when you’re reading this), Gasmii! Welcome to week 4 of “Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars.” Last week, we said good by to Drew Lachey and Hélio Castroneves – both former champions. I can’t say that I’m too sad that Hélio is gone. It was getting annoying to copy and past his name every time I wrote it just so I could get the accent over the e.

Take your complicated name and go home!

This week, the couples will be performing the dances chosen for them by their competitors. There are lots of dances we’ve never seen before on the show and some that our pros don’t even know how to do! Competition-wise, we see lots of highs and lows – including the first 10s of the season! Also, we learn that Gilles looks HOT with some five o’clock shadow, messy hair, and a bare chest (*swoon*).

Even better, Paula Abdul is sitting next to Bruno at the judges’ table! This has the potential to be the most entertaining show of the entire season!

Bring on the crazy!

The full recap will be up soon. In the mean time, check out last week’s recap if you haven’t already!

Bristol still can’t get off my screen fast enough – enough of her negative attitude!

Gilles and Peta definitely benefited from not having anyone on the panel who was familiar with Bollywood. I thought their dance was great, but again, I wouldn’t know if their hand positions were correct or not. Val and Kelly’s “contemporary” dance was a sad excuse for contemporary in my opinion. And, what the hell was up with the high score’s for Bristol’s lame dance?! There was absolutely no degree of difficulty, and she scored higher than Kirstie, who really appeared to be busting her ass. I call shenanigans, mostly because I like that word.

I am hoping that the judges gave Bristol high scores so that they wouldn’t get the “aren’t they horrible picking on a young girl” voters and that maybe she can go home (please, please, please). The Bollywood and Contemporary weren’t anywhere near the standard set by SYTYCD so I was a little disappointed. And I agree, Kirstie was busting her ass this week (and looked really good with that hair under control).

I agree with you both, EnriquesMole and Pikey. While Gilles dance was very fun to watch, no one knew how they should be judging it. This whole challenge seemed a bit unfair (there’s a big rant in the full recap about it) because some couples got actual dances that have specific moves (Charleston, Bolero, Mambo, etc.) while others had dance styles that didn’t really have any set rules (Bollywood, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Hip Hop, etc.).

While in no way a fan – I thought it was interesting that Mark Baldass stated directly to the camera “Bristol couldn’t pick up the steps and kept complaining (shocker) that the routine was too hard for her so I had to dumb it down to her level – way down” Plus he wanted to dress up in a bunny costume? There might actually be something to claims of him sabbotaging their team? To that I say GO MARK GO!

The “make-up” scene at the restaurant where Team BM (Bristol – Mark) air it all out and apologize was so staged & phoney and poorly “acted” it made me chuckle.

@considerthis: HA! Team BM! If it’s all right with you, I’m stealing that for the recaps for the rest of the time Bristol is on the show. :)

Alas, PopePhilly, if the last time Bristol was on is any indication, you’ll be using that for the run of the season. :-(

    Feel free PopePhilly!

I just can’t believe the phrase “dumb down routines” and “All Star season” should be used to reference the same show.

Also did not get on the DWTS train until season 2 and do not watch GH so I am very unfamiliar with Kelly Monaco. While I am impressed with her improvement week after week, why is she so moody, depressed, almost annoyed/angry week after week. Granted her dance last nite had a certain “tone” to it but long before that when they were announcing the couples at the show’s intro she was glaring/scowling at the cameras. Is this just the way she is?

@chacah: As long as I can call Bristol (or any Palin, for that matter) a bowel movement, she can stay on as long as she wants. It’s not a partisan thing (I call myself a “militant moderate) – I just hate wingnuts and attention whores.

@considerthis: Thank you! *Buys you a cyber drink for allowing me to use your creativity!*

I think Kelly and Val were trying to stay in character the whole time. He seemed pretty moody too. She never seemed like this in the other episodes. Also, it was mentioned that she had a broken toe. While that’s not the worst injury ever, I’m sure she was feeling pretty miserable. I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt for this episode.

I kept waiting for Kelly and Val to dry hump. They were making me very uncomfortable with all of their petting and emoting. I couldn’t tell if they were “acting” or if they are really bumping uglies IRL. And/or all of the above just to get more votes.

I agree on Team BM (TM considerthis) – I cannot believe that after Mark BallsNass said directly to the camera that he was dumbing down the routine b/c Bristol was too afraid that the judges still went ahead with the ass-kissing and bogus 8′s.

BTW, Paula was more critical than I expected and way loopier. I hadn’t seen American Idol since season 1, so I forgot what a whackjob she is. She was giving Bruno “Hot Pants” Tonoli a run for his horny money.

Didn’t Tom also say Kelly had a broken toe? From the way he announced it it sounded like it might have just happened either earlier in the day, too. I think that also played into her glum interview with Brooke. That and being interviewed by Brooke.

I did watch the first season and Kelly was always very serious on competition night. And like she said in the package this week, she has a lot of walls that need to come down. She always seemed to be counting and terrified she’d look bad in the first season, so just the fact that she’s relaxing in practice and really seems to like Val has made her dances so much better. She just seems like a sweet person who’s a little too hard on herself which, when partnered with Alec, just made her that much more anxious where Val seems to let her know it’s just about having fun.

I never thought I’d end up cheering for Stompin’ Kelly Monaco because she really was flat-footed and dull in the first season, but I’m glad she came back. Even if she can seem really dour after her dances.

I’m trying to come up with names for each of the couples. Gilles and Peta will be Team Pretty because “Team Makes PopePhilly Think Very Dirty Thoughts” is just too long. :)

@vallegirl: I’m amazed Kelly (or anyone, really) is still awake after their interviews with Brooke.

I don’t think that Kelly and ValENTIN (him, not me) are bumping uglies – her boyfriend is shown prominently in the audience each week (sitting with other actors from GH). What is interesting is watching Max while Gilles is with Peta (Max’s girlfriend irl) – Gilles is reportedly happily married but Max doesn’t look very happy…

I really, really, really don’t like Val. He’s trying to be Maks, and comes across just nasty and smarmy. I totally agree with Enrique that Val and Kelly were annoying the WHOLE TIME.

I felt really bad for Karina, and I don’t even really like her – falling like that HURTS, even if you don’t actually injure yourself, and it’s so embarrassing.

I came in partway through, so missed Team “BM”…but I was actually pretty impressed with Gilles’ Bollywood. It’s not an easy style, and he did a pretty decent job.

Pope, I heart you, you’re so prompt with your mini caps!

OMG that Gilles is SMOKIN hot, that’s all I have to say.

Oh and it was fun to see Paula wacko there, I miss her!

Couldn’t believe they gave BP 8s! Really?!! Kirstie is one of the few who is actually *dancing* rather than merely performing a choreographed routine. Shawn is a terrific performer, but has zero musicality. I didn’t like Kelly at all on season 1. She seemed annoyed and put out that she actually had to work until about halfway through. She’s just “meh” for me. And Gilles…yeah, hawt!

Thank you, wcsdancer, for pointing out Shawn’s lack of musicality because I found their mambo stiff where Latin dances should have more free-flowing hips and shoulders. She’s utterly fantastic at the tricks and is pretty game to do what’s asked but Cuban dances should have a more spontaneous feel to them but everything about that mambo felt overly planned.

Highly entertaining no doubt and I don’t disagree with the high scores, but I always feel like the Latin dances are always too controlled. The few times an actual Latino danced them, like JR, Mario and William, they usually have more of a party feel to them which is how they should feel. And I know the pros are certainly capable of getting that feel. But last night’s mambo was so “Broadway.”

@considerthis – I don’t think Mark wanted to dress in bunny costumes. I think BP mis-understood ‘at the hop’ and he capitalized on it in the snarkiest way imaginable!
