Hi, Gasmii. So, it’s the semi-finals of “DWTS All-Stars.” Previously, we said goodbye to Kirstie and Gilles. After watching this episode, I’m pretty sure they’re glad they weren’t participating in this week. The show reached an all-time record level of stupid. It was 8:09 p.m. (EST) when the CGI dinosaur appeared on my TV screen. Note the time. That was the moment that “DWTS” officially jumped the shark.

Even Fonzie thought this episode was just too much.
The first half of the show just left me saying, “Dafuq did I just watch?” I’m just so happy that this is the second last week of this shit. I have never seen more gimmicks thrown into anything ever. To put that into perspective, I regularly watch “America’s Next Top Model.” I’m pretty sure this season of “DWTS” is more gimmicky than anything Tyra Banks has ever done.

Now the runner-up in the crazy race.
At least the second half of the show was a little less stupid. “The Music of Michael Jackson” is a perfectly good theme. It’s a lot better than, “Let’s just be ridiculous and put some weird shit together.” I wish they were all performing Argentine tangos (tangoes? Neither one shows up with a red squiggle under it). I just think that the Argentine tango is a dance that’s inherently more impressive than, for example, a rumba. I think it puts some of the couples at a bit of a disadvantage. Maybe that’s just me.
Anyway, this week is another double elimination. I’m thinking it will be Kelly and Emmitt going home. I’m calling Melissa for the win right here. Americans like an underdog and she’s the only one left who hasn’t already won. Also, I’d really like to see Tony win. My second choice would be Kelly (if she makes it through this week). Val never makes it very far and it’s nice to see him emerging as a competitor.
OK, Gasmii, that’s it for the minicap. Check back soon for the full recap. In the mean time, read last week’s recap if you haven’t already. Catch ya soon!
If you like it, spread it!:

I would also love to see Melissa win with Apolo as my second choice. I cannot stomach Derek so don’t want Shawn to finish first, no matter how badly she wants it. Failing that, CGI Dinosaur for the win!
Derek MUST sleep with someone to ALWAYS get a great partner. I just wish she would come out of the closet, I’m not saying that because he is a dancer its just cause he was born that way. I really cant stand him either and I really want Melissa to win. I did like this season but All-Stars should not be people who had won, it should have been all people who were close or a fan favorite.
I finally get the criticism of Shawn as lacking musicality. She had all the choreography down pat (as usual) in the tango, but it was a plastic Barbie effort when compared to Melissa and Tony. I gave them all my votes but I don’t think there is any stopping the Derek machine.
Yep, Madani, it irritates me when the judges gush so much over Shawn when she has no connection to the music. She doesn’t *dance*, she performs choreography. Very well. The producer are either 1) setting Shawn & Derek up for the win, or 2) Setting it up for Melissa & Tony to win. I don’t believe that the viewer votes are driving this thing.
@Pikey: Team CGI Dinosaur! I’d be OK with an Apolo win. He just seems really down to earth. I think he’d truly appreciate a win.
@Deguy: I’m pretty sure Derek is still dating Katherine Jenkins. Wasn’t that a thing at some point? I’m not up on my “pop-culture dating lives” news these days. Also, the winners of previous seasons ARE the fan favorites. That’s why they win – they have the fan votes.
@Madani: I’m sure a lot of Shawn’s stiffness comes from her years of gymnastics training. She’d be so used to just performing moves on autopilot. Unfortunately, that doesn’t translate well to dancing where mere choreography isn’t enough for something to be great. There needs to be some musical interpretation.
@wcsdancer: I’m thinking we’re being set up for a Tony/Melissa win. They’re the only team left where neither partner has won a mirror ball trophy. I think they’re setting up Val to be one of the new main faces of the show. They’re having him get really far so he can gain a following. This show has been so obviously manipulated this year. It’s kind of sad.
The thing with Shawn is, they had no problems calling out Evan on his stiffness due to his figure skating training. He was nitpicked on almost every dance even though at his height and with his training he could also pull off some dazzling moves that could obscure his missteps. So they needn’t seal clap over a favorite, since he very nearly won.
And I don’t really want to see Melissa win but wouldn’t mind Tony winning. He’s been stuck with so many hapless celebrities that it would be nice to reward him once, too bad he’s with her because she just chaps my ass. It’s irrational but I just want her to shut up even when she’s not talking.
Apolo’s still my favorite because Karina’s really pushing him to perform. That jazz routine last night was great, even if it wasn’t perfect, and had fairly high level choreography that he should get rewarded for it. But male celebrities can often get lost in the shuffle since so much of their work revolves around supporting the woman. Val can make Kelly look better than she is, but when Apolo does his job well, he makes Karina look amazing. Plus, he seems like a good guy. They’ve both won before but I think they deserve to win this time, too.
@vallegirl: I’ve given up all hope of the judges being consistent. For some reason they love Shawn. Maybe her dances look better in person. I don’t even know if that’s possible.
There’s something about the way Melissa talks that makes me want her to shut up. I don’t quite know what it is. I wish I could explain it.
As much as I’ve never been a fan of Karina (mainly due to personality, not so much dancing), I will give her credit for always pushing her partners. I’ve never seen her play it safe like some of the other pros (*cough* Derek and Mark *cough*). She choreographs great routines and expects hard work from her celebrities. Period.
I totally agree with you that Val is the main reason Kelly looks as good as she does this season. It is nice to see him get to showcase his talents as a choreographer. I don’t think we’ve seen that before.
Popephilly – Derek’s been with Ryan Seacrest for years, if you believe the gossips (which I do!)
I’m hoping for Melissa or Kelly to win. I never really like either of them on their original seasons, but I’ve grown soft…
I would love to see Tony win, if only to make up for having to dance with Kate Gosselin. That poor man…he deserves a mirrorball.
