MiniCap: Top Chef

ARGH!!!!!  UGHDouble UGHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

These are just a few of the noises I was making as last night’s Top Chef episode unfolded.  I can’t even do a full minicap right now because I am still trying to wrap my brain around the absolute BULLSHIT that played out on my TV.  Was it all a dream?  Will I wake up and find that it’s only 9:58pm on Wednesday night?

SHUT UP PADMA

I dreamed a dream this epi would be
Sooooo different than the hell I’m watching…..

I haven’t watched Last Chance Kitchen yet because I don’t know that my blood pressure can handle it if Uniball takes the win again.  I might just spontaneously combust!

I’m gonna leave it here for now because the sooner I get to the full recap, the sooner I can REALLY talk about all the shit that’s pissing me off.  I promise to try and hold up to the high standards of recapping that J-Mo brings to all of us each week – I know he’s off somewhere yelling about this episode as well!!

See y’all back here in a few days…

SWAK, PottyMouth

PottyMouth

When she isn't screaming curses at various dance show judges or washing her OWN mouth out with soap, PottyMouth is a proud mama to a gorgeous little boy. And yes, she knows everyone says that about their kids, but it's true when she says it. YES IT IS. Fuck you. She also laments throwing away the chance to be a trophy wife, and would like to find a rich husband so she can sit on her ass all day long and watch TV. If you are fabulously wealthy, look like Hugh Jackman (or ARE in fact Hugh Jackman), and are turned on by foul-mouthed, mature, slightly smooshy women, then she just may be the gal for you. You ain’t kidding. This episode was SUCH bullshit, and I think I blew a hole in my carotid artery because of it. I’m rapidly getting ready to chalk Season 10 as a full-on SUCKY season because of this!

    love, J-Mo :)

P.S. Girl, THANK YOU for helping me out with this one… :)

    Man, fuck Padma.
Fuck Padma, fuck daddy tom extra hard for that blog he wrote, fuck LaGassy. fuck everyone up there but Gail.
Fuck the entire institution of Top Chef and fuck Bravo too, because nobody knows what they are doing up there.

Bitch better win LCK or the viewer vote, and then proceed to win the whole competition, because the devil is a filthy liar.

A commenter on Daddy Tom’s Bravo blog summed it up perfectly:

“I knew this would happen after last week. Seriously, what did you expect would happen when you have a pre-competition to put two of your best chefs in as execs in restaurant wars? You almost always send the exec of the losing team home, so you set things up from the beginning to keep the mediocre and lose the talent.”

Padma said on WWHL that she would rather eat Kristens food ANY day over Josie’s///and that Josie was obviously a second rate chef…she also said the JUDGES KNEW Josie basically sabotaged the dish and that Kristen should have spoken up about it..how very sad that they allowed this to go this far just to keep the viewers tuning in..this is all about everyone watching to see when Josie gets booted off…and I am sure her return contract has a specific number of episodes in mind. She is just insufferable and PADMA seems a little jealous of everyone commenting on how attractive Kristen is…just a total bunch of BS..I hope the other Chefs freeze Blowsie out & call her on her shitty food.

What a travesty. I have absolutely no respect left for the judges. Le Gassy kept repeating that the scallops were raw and the halibut was overcooked and apparently there wasn’t enough sauce to put on to begin with, but that didn’t count? And Padma on WWHL bleating that Top Model will probably win Fan Favorite. Kiss my lustrous fundament. Isn’t this show supposed to be about cooking? So they’ve let Blowsie skate by all season. What a bunch of anal polyps.

At this point, it should be obvious that TC has become nothing more than “professional” wrestling. Josie is the “heel:” The wrestler everybody loves to hate. I’ll bet the producers and Josie have a deal where she acts unlikeable and in return, she gets to the last couple of episodes. (These reality “actors” are paid per episode, so the longer she stays on, the more she gets paid.)

Even Josie isn’t dumb enough to think that you can cook bouillabaisse in one quick shot. More likely she delayed over and over because the producers told her to. This is all faked conflict, nothing more than “pro” wrestling, which I thought was entertainment for the stupid as a 10 year old kid. Congratulations, producers, you’ve now reached the lowest common denominator.

oh– and… Brooke and Lizzie should have chimed in as to what was going on… which would have been the right thing to do… however, I think both of them were just thinking how nice it would be to get rid of the most talented chef in the competition. I really think Kristen has to take the blame though… the judges were looking for ANY reason to kick out Blowsie, all Kristen needed to point to the time management issues of Blowsie and Blowsie would have been gone.

This episode was infuriating, and their blogs are even more infuriating. Every single one of them in one breath says it comes down to who had the best food and in the other says it comes down to the executive chef being in charge. It makes NO SENSE that they would have sent home Kristen for Blowsie’s mistakes but not Sheldon for Stefan’s mistakes. If it was the food, and Blowsie had a good sauce but terrible fish, then it’s STILL her who should go home.

Let’s face it Blowitupandoutyourass blow job doll makes good tv and people want her to fail, so who better to keep around. Makes better ratings for the show. The main question should be is the bitch going to win?

(for the record, I’ve been a long time fan of the recaps and J-Mo but this episode made me angry enough to delurk)

I KNEW something terrible would happen this episode. I knew it would happen when they selected the two strongest chefs to be the team leaders. Because no matter how awful one of the other chefs is – no matter how bland the food tastes, or how poor the service – the losing team captain is the most likely to be blamed for the team’s failure. I was very happy for Kristin and Sheldon for winning that cash prize, but I immediately knew that one of them would be sent packing this week.

And while I genuinely wanted Kristin to defend herself at judges’ panel, I don’t think it would have kept her in the competition. The judges know that Josie skates by every week. They know that her time management is awful (which fucked her team over) and her skills are subpar (which ALSO fucked her team over). I think that she definitely has the best shot of returning to the competition though. She beat CJ (HALLELO) and even if she loses against another chef, I think it’s safe to say that she’ll win the fan vote. I just really want to see her slap down Josie with the culinary hand of God in LCK.

If my aim were better I’d be out a teevee tonight (and probably a remote, too), and if my walls were thinner the neighbors would have been shocked at my language. What a crock of hooey. Those producers must be spinning some jaw-dropping rationalizations, and/or the \judges\ are completely devoid of both taste buds and honor.

@sheesh, I agree: Kristen has a sense of honor. She also takes accountability for having the final say on what left the kitchen. Sadly, those qualities (honor and accountability) are very rare in these types of shows; obviously the producers would rather have people stab each other in the back before throwing them under the bus. It’s a lousy role model: slither out of your responsibilities by blaming someone else. I am not surprised that Blowsie slithered while Kristen stood tall and proud.

I think Oschisms is right. Every season they do seem to have a (usually overweight, usually female, but old and annoying will do in a pinch) \skate-by-er\ who they either cast deliberately as an obnoxious moron or a slimy \cheater\, or edit them to the degree that they’re unbearable. In Josie they found both, and she joins the Robin, Jamie Turdle, Fleasa, mean fattie from last year class of dead weight to hate. This stopped being just a cooking competition show a long time ago.

I will never make fun of Gale and her fugblouses again. The one time I watch Top Chef when it actually airs and not the next day so I get spoilers and my fucking favorite person this season besides Kuniko gets offed? Top Model was probably the best chance of the final 4 women (at the time) to be the 2nd Female Top Chef and she gets torpedoed. I liked Josie during her original season and was holding out for change but BULLLLSHIIIIT. The only girl left who has a shot is McBitchyson.

Then, fucking Scar pulls a not so fast and saves Josie pissed me the fuck off more. I don’t think Josie will win and will get taken out next time. This elimination really pissed me off more than Bitter Jen in All-Stars and Kuniko’s this season.

Honestly, this is the first year where I feel that it’s rigged. There have been some questionable decisions in the past, but Blowsie, Thumby, and Uniball all still in it (in some form) at this point is astounding despite all of them turning in crappy performances constantly.

This season has finally surpassed Season 7 as the crappiest season of TC. By a long run.

And “Oschisms”, watch it about the pro wrestling. I’ve been a fan since I was 9 (leaning more toward “indy” feds in recent years), and I assure you, I am very smart. You’re right, I had no need to denigrate professional wrestling in order to make my point: Josie has been picked to be the “heel.” As such, she’ll make it to the finals but not win, because the heel never wins. But TC needs to drop the charade that this show has anything to do with food and put Daddy Tom and LaGassy in tights and feather boas, befitting their clownish status.

(And FWIW, I greatly admire the pro wrestling writers. I would have run out of storylines about 2 guys in a ring sometime before the Great Depression.)

I read somewhere that the ratings for last season were pretty low so I guess they’re sticking their hands in the koolaid and making sure there’s this huge dramatic moment to get everyone talking about TC again. At this point, I would love for Josie to luck into a win. It would serve them right to have what amounts to a McDonald’s line cook as the new Top Chef.

I had stopped watching this show but J-Mo’s recaps dragged me back in but I think I’m finally done with it now. Someone notify Fonzie cause Top Chef has officially jumped the shark.

First she demands that ThumbyHead be sent home because he didn’t genuflect when she asked him about a dish that was served. Then when the other judges override her and it’s the women’s team who loses, she is all pissy in her demands that Blowsie be saved, and that demand is honored. Nobody dares to deny her twice in a row, I guess.

There would have been nothing dishonorable with Kristen telling the judges what was going on in the kitchen. If you are a chef in a real kitchen, you are completely responsible for what goes out– this is a show, where others are playing games (Blowsie), so the judges have the right to know all of the facts. I was hoping for a TopModel win (and there is hope), but what she did was dumb.

Just to carry this bullshit to its logical conclusion, what should happen now is that ThumbyHead should be kept in to the end and Blowsie sent to LCK. Once there, Blowsie should be allowed to “win” her way all the way back into the finale, and America’s votes should be counted Big Brother style, i.e., the producers simply announce that America voted C.J. back in. I don’t really get why everyone is so upset by this particular decision, when this type of decision is made all the time on Top Chef. In a team challenge, the leader ALWAYS goes home, especially if the leader chooses not to defend themselves. Josie said that she was going home in the stew room and she didn’t because Kristin made the “fall on your sword” gamble that never works with Daddy Tom. I love Kristin, and actually thought she was going to win this season, but damn…. if you don’t defend yourself, you deserve to lose. At the end of the day, Top Chef is a competition and I don’t understand why saying, “Josie sucks, has poor time management skills, and refused to listen” equates to her taking responsibility for the team’s poor showing. Kristin’s logic didn’t make any sense, so from that perspective, she clearly should’ve gone home. Remember, the mousy girl from earlier this season went home for lack of confidence. An inability to fight for your right to stay in the competition equates to a lack of confidence. And, for that reason, I can understand the decision.

Just finished typing an enormous rant about the Bravo assholery of this episode, and it was deleted for being a duplicate comment. So, slightly calmer, I can only ask – is Josie that compelling a character that we must see her lumbering across our TV screens for yet another week? Yes, there’s always a dickhead chef, but we’ve had so many to choose from this season: Thumbyhead, Hater Tots, Blowsie, Loudmouth Carla, even the first couple of episodes’ worth of McBitchyson. I don’t think that this far into the competition, we need to be treated to the spectacle of a second-rate chef with demonstrably poor time management skills being kept in the competition over a far superior competitor.

  49. 49
    Posted January 18, 2013 at 12:23 pm

@Derek, Josie not only did all those things, but also, either actively or passively, sabotaged Kristen’s ability to actually lead the brigade. Kristen told her several times the day before to start roasting the fish bones for the stock, which Josie said she was doing but did not. Then the next morning she swore to Kristen she could have the stock made in an hour and no problem, except when the hour was up she was not near finished but still swore she could get it done. Then, as time was running out she asked Kristen for the gelatin but it was too hot so Kristen had to make the last minute decision to switch to cream. Then, THEN, Josie didn’t test the equipment which wasn’t working so Kristen settled on just spooning the sauce on the fish.

Had Kristen made that case, as the executive chef, she’d have been accused of “making excuses.” Instead she chose not to make any excuses at all. But when faced with Josie’s additional duplicity at panel, basically claiming it was all Kristen’s fault that they used cream instead of the gelatin, the judges, not Kristen and not Josie, should have been able to add 1 (time management issue leading to a crappy dish) and 1(Josie) and realized the blame lay with her and not Kristen and questioned the team accordingly.

I bet they’d have gotten different answers from everyone had they just focused on why Josie’s dish, and only Josie’s dish, had to be completely reconfigured at the last moment due to timing issues. It’s clearly not something new and they should have asked but didn’t. So they let Kristen fall on her sword instead of sending the rightful loser off to LCK.

Hey guys! I’m on vacay in San Francisco, but I wanted 2 chime in here about Restaurant Wars eliminations from the past. Often there has been no Exec Chef, the danger is usually held by Front Of House. But even that is no guarantee, bcuz Ty-Bore from S9, & KennEgo from Sss7 weren’t in either of those roles. Check Wikipedia 4 the other seasons, and I bet there are others, too (like TurkeyHair during AllStars, the BF tells me).

    Love, J-Mo. :)

“I bet they’d have gotten different answers from everyone had they just focused on why Josie’s dish, and only Josie’s dish, had to be completely reconfigured at the last moment due to timing issues.”

Yasssss….their questions were all kinds of fail. All they had to do was pursue a very simple and logical line of questioning and that would have told them exactly what the fuck happened back there.
Kristen said that she told Josie to leave out the gelatin.
They asked her why, and she said it was because they ran out of time.
At that point, is it not logical to ask WHY. Were they not curious about WHY?

And when they complained about how Tom got something frothy and how the rest of them got liquid, all they had to do was ask why. Ask why there was no time to test the equipment or to come up with another idea besides spooning sauce. Ask…why.

The judges failed so horribly in every possible way this episode, I can’t even wrap my head around it.
In what universe is Josie ever a better choice than Kristen for anything, besides when you need to throw someone out the lifeboat because that shit is sinking?
    Just madness.

LOL!!! Chaos, I almost spit up my water with that image. That is not even a second thought…

@crankyguy-I thought the same thing until I read it on Bravo. I am hoping for both Kuniko and Kristen to come back since they both have probably the best chance besides McBitchyson and it in INFURIATING. The two best chefs this season get kicked off and it is UNREAL.

Between this and how PR ended, I am utterly flabbergasted. Then the way Scar tried to suck up to Kristen afterwards on WWHL pissed me off more. I was trying to be happy since Maggie Q from Nikita was on but I just couldn’t.

Seeing the way Scar has been makes me almost miss Boring Katie Lee and Bok Choi.

@Parisi — I like Kuniko and all, but she was hardly one of the “best chefs of the season”

The girl seemed to have a palate and be able to cook, but was pretty scatterbrained. If Stoner hadn’t prevented her from burning her chili oil, she would have probably been gone the first week instead of the second.

I do agree on Kristen, though.

Not that I don’t agree with most of the comments above, but I keep coming back to the fact that Kristin chose Josie for her team. She had the option of choosing Micah and went with Josie instead. And I really have to wonder why. Was she told to go girls v boys? Did she really think Josie was the better chef? Did she not know that having Josie on her team would cause time management issues given that Josie never finishes on time?

Part of me just wants to say – you chose her, so it’s your fault you had to pack your knives. The other part of me wants to add to the above rants.

I think that Kristen was a big dumb dumb for picking Josie (it’s almost like she knew they weren’t going to get rid of Josie and she didn’t want to be a man short). You would have done better a man short than having Josie in my opinion.

Do I think Kristen should have gone? If it was based on a combination of running the restaurant, keeping your people in check and making sure the food is good then sure. How ever, even though the judges say that’s what they look at, you never really know what they are looking for because I think they just pull names out of a hat sometimes.

I was a little shocked that they let Kristen go since she has potential. I was surprised at the amount of animosity toward her after they were served raw food and yelled at because they asked about the food they just consumed.

But what REALLY frosted my cookies is the way Josie acted like a victim after the elimination (Aww, man, guys! I thought I was going home!). Really, dude? You are terrible, you aren’t held accountable for anything you do, you are incredibly frequently on the bottom of everything, your time management skills are only rivaled by a baby that has no concept of time and you suck, but you have the balls to be all \I almost went home, somebody hold me!\ Bite. My ass. Bitch.

Does anyone read the chef blogs on Bravo?

@Mouse – I don’t read the blogs on Bravo. I would feel inclined to comment on the BS thrown around and then would get furious when they didn’t publish my comment. I’ve heard several people complain that they only publish a very low percentage of negatives and mine would be a goner because it would be full of profanity. I can come to the Gasm and cuss all I want.

But for real, can you imagine being adrift on the open sea with Josie?
With her constant squawking and inappropriate/unwanted touching?

Even if the lifeboat wasn’t sinking, her ass would still be going overboard.
Ain’t nobody got time for that.
