Minicap: Work of Art

hey ‘Gasmii!  Work of Art is back on schedule, comin’ at your eyeballs every Wednesday night. Hooray!

woa minicap

ha!

Speaking of eyeballs, mine are a little sore after last night’s episode.  I had to look at Lola’s pubes. Not something that was on my to-do list for the day, let me tell you.

Wait, I gotta back up.  The episode this week was about selling art on the street. It’s a hot topic in the art community, the idea of selling out, the push to make things marketable, to make money…and still maintain your integrity.  In that spirit, last night’s challenge was about making a piece of art that was easy to sell on the street and also looked good in the gallery.

It was a team challenge, which is always fun, and then there were some moral gray areas to explore. Don’t worry, the pubes were in a black and white gray area. It’s how the pubes were sold that was morally gray.

Don’t worry, we’re as miserable about you as you are.

I’ll have the big bad recap up within the next day, so come back and talk about it with me. I’ll bitch more then about who didn’t go home. Ugh.

And in the meantime, in case ya missed ‘em, my previous WOA recaps start here!

About

Time for an update! I used to be a tall, athletic editor who lived on the East coast. Oh, I still am, only now I've gained back all the weight I lost, which changes my life-tone quite a bit. Now that I'm married, I have a lot less time to watch Bravo and Food network. We usually end up watching Big Bang Theory reruns ("all of my friends, all of my friends, all of my friends") or Wipeout. Or WWE Raw. Wow. How life has changed!  Join me as we chat about my breast friend Patti Stanger and her love minions. Or maybe we'll talk about art during Work of Art. Whatever we're watching, don't be shy--tell me what you think!

I sound half-drunk in this minicap. It’s because I was ten minutes out from a meeting and realized, “I didn’t write my minicap for work of art!!!” And then the site was freezing. I almost cried.

More competency to come in the full recap.

Sorry that you had to see that, SexyPanda, but it makes me like Lola a little (just a little) bit better to know that she lets her bush grow wild and free. All this pluckin’, shavin’, and waxin’ has gotten completely out of hand.

I have to admit, I liked Lola’s idea. Though Kymia’s was even better (and probably was what inspired Lola). And I finally put my finger on what’s been bothing me about Lola this whole time — it’s her tranny voice. Even though she’s clearly not. Unless she was tucking under that bush?

Lola is awful, but she definitely didn’t turn in the worst art this week. I think they could have pitted every single other contestant against Sara j and she still would have kicked their asses. At first I was like, No one else thought to do street portraits? Really?? There are like, 50 random guys doing that and making cash at every boardwalk in California. But then I realized that, aside from maybe Kymia, no one else had the skills to do that. Kymia is a great drawer, but I think the whole rushed to draw with a crowd of people waiting thing might have broken her down. Disappointing week, but not really the artists’ fault. That challenge was designed to insure that no one had time to make anything spectacular.

As an awesome display of how much it costs to make art (and how little you make from selling it), each team got $600 for supplies. Even the winning team missed making their money back by over a hundred bucks. And this is why I’ve learned to enjoy Top Ramen.

The one thing that really bugged me about Lola’s artwork, though, was that the bottom third was B/W which made her look like she was wearing grey thigh highs everytime they showed her picture. It just drove me crazy by the end of the episode.

Other than that, she had a solid idea and worked it well both in terms of sales and in the gallery. I wanted her to fail miserably, like I always do, but I can admit that she didn’t…this time.

Ugh, I know!!! I wish they’d aired the part where she explains why the bottom of her legs were gray. Was that intentional? If not, what was the bullshit answer for it? It was terribly distracting.

I loved Sara J’s and I’m glad she won. I like her humility about it, too.

@themiki: do you have a link where we can see your work?

The black and white bit bothered me too — at first I thought she was wearing thigh-highs, but then I realized that since she goes out of her way to be unsexy, that can’t be it.

I’ve revised me initial impression – it bothers me that all the piece is, really, is a printout. And that her secrets were printed too — she might have written those in (since that’s her “thing” as one of pompous judge-dudes exclaimed a few weeks back), and taken the whole thing into the next level. I liked the idea of selling secrets to the customers, but that bit was lifted from Kymia.

I really liked the elegance of Kymia’s final piece and think that should have won (if they weren’t so intent on giving Yeung every fucking prize — although in this case, he was carried by Sara J.)

Speaking of which, I don’t think the winner should have been judged solely on sales — they should have had some hidden criterium (like, interaction with people or whatever).

Dusty’s reached his limit. He’s probably begging to go home.

Also, I feel kind of bad for Lola, since in her confessionals, she’s clearly unaware of how much hatred she is about to inspire…

@itchy — Being the starving (and mediocre) artist that I am, I don’t have an actual art website, but I do have a public album on Facebook with a lot of my stuff in it. I can’t remember if the ‘gasm lets us post links in comments, so if there’s no link following this paragraph, I guess the answer is no:
