Minicap: Smash

Smash

Katherine McPhee has a gorgeous voice, but anybody who can make Blondie’s “Call Me” boring… I just don’t know, you guys.

She can’t even keep herself awake.

In a nutshell…

Marilyn: Requires a second callback from Ivy and Katren in order to finally give one of them the lead.

The Nots: Not-Will is firmly on Team Ivy. Not-Grace is a bitch to Ellis the Hot Assistant.

Katren: Practices her dancing and stands Brit Boy up at a very important dinner.

Ivy: Studies Marilyn obsessively and sleeps with Derek.

Eileenica Houston: Throws drink #1 in Jerry’s face.

Brit Boy: I just like to listen to him talk.

Call me.

Derek: Is delightfully skeevy and the best thing about this show so far.

Ellis the Hot Assistant: Has a nasty habit of listening at doors.

The Adoption: Is now a character in its own right.

SuburBint: Desperately wants to like this show, but it refuses to even meet her half-way.

The full recap will be up soon. If you need a refresher on what happened in last week’s episode, you can read all about it here.

About

After giving birth to her fourth child, SuburBint carefully weighed the options and decided that recapping reality TV was probably a better choice in the long run than alcoholism. Liver function tests have yet to confirm the wisdom of this decision. Being an honest-to-goodness recapper is also a dream come true, as she has aspired to do this ever since discovering that such a thing existed way back in 2002.

Her favorite shows of all time include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Coupling, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Firefly, Community, Parks and Recreation, Doctor Who, and Veronica Mars. She can also quote The Big Lebowski in its entirety, and will do so with little to no provocation.

Trying to find something to say about this show …

… i do like Ivy and think she’s a decently compelling character? Even if she is a walking cliche (like everyone else on the show)?

Oh hell. All I could really think about when snoozing through this weeks epi was how much I wanted to watch The Aquatic Life Of Steve Zissou. Oh Anjelica Huston, why why why are you settling on a show like this?

Oh yeah. They’re ruining this concept. And then it’s going to be years before anyone tries it again. The bastards.

I know the show wants us to like Karen, but I can’t figure out what’s so damn likable about her in terms of her Broadway capability. Sure, she’s cute and can sing, but so are millions of girls trying to make it on Broadway. There is literally nothing that would make me pause to consider her over Ivy, who certainly is a pain in the ass (and apparently a slut), but still the best fit for the show.

By the way, how much do you want to bet that “Ivy Lynn” is actually a stage replacement for something like Ida Lillian Herkenhoff, or something else delightfully Midwestern?

@ Elmstreet – put Steve Zissou on my Netflix queue, haven’t seen it but the cast looks amazing.

@ Itchy – You said it. The idea has potential, but the show itself hasn’t grabbed me yet.

@ Jaycee – I think we’re supposed to relate to Karen as an underdog who emerges from obscurity to succeed in a cut-throat career. I would imagine that if they were to give us some back story on Ivy, she would be equally, if not more sympathetic. Heck, she already is and we know not a whole lot about her. I’m guessing that she’s from the South. I really hope they develop her character more fully instead of just making her the more experienced rival for the sweet little ingenue. And the actress who plays her brings passion to the role, whereas poor Kat McPhee is downright boring. I think that’s why Ivy went to bed with Derek, she was in the moment while reading the scene and the passion that she was portraying as Marilyn carried over into real life. And of course, she’s jaded enough to realize that sleeping with the director is probably not going to hurt her chances of getting the role.

AAARGH! This show! I want to like it, why won’t they make it likeable?! Also, was it just me, or is Leo (Not-Grace’s teenage son) being played by a different actor than he was in the pilot?

Absolutely no idea what I’m going to say in the full recap… send me vibey goodness please!

I want to like this show. I really, really want to. But it’s not making it easy for me. More Derek Wills, please.

@Jaycee– Yeah, “Ivy Lynn” SCREAMS stage name. But now that Marilyn has been cast, what will become of our beloved, underdog heroine? If she’s the star of Smash, then WTF are they going to do with her? Oh yeah, make her the understudy. Duh.

Again, more Derek Wills and Anjelica Huston. Please. Even if only to see her throw more drinks in her ex’s face.

Wow. I’d like to thank all of you Gasmi for telling me about this show. I had a strong aversion to the ads for it but I thought, “Anjelica Houston? How can I not watch?” Now you have all confirmed my apprehensions so intelligently that I feel safe staying away!

@SuburBint, OMG, I thought it was a different son too. His name’s Leo? NotGrace was married to Leo on W&G.

My mom finds NotGrace a lot more sympathetic than I do. She also thinks that Hot Assistant is evil, scheming, and not to be trusted.
