“So a Seinfeld veteran can’t be on TV but a vampire can? TV just got really, really goyim!”

No, Julia Louis Dreyfus didn’t really say that, but her New Adventures of the Old Christine didn’t make it into the “edgy” Fall lineup that CBS announces at an upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall this afternoon (Christine is in line for a 13-episode midseason slot).

Right. “Edgy” as in pulling TV mainstay Jimmy Smits back into primetime in the South Florida crime family drama, Cane (hey, isn’t that the name of David Caruso’s character in CSI: Miami?), and copying the British series Viva Blackpool for Hugh Jackman’s iffy musical Viva Laughlin, which gets the Sunday Amazing Race slot (Race has been renewed and will back later in the season).

They do have vampires, though, in Moonlight, which will follow Ghost Whisperer, making Friday nights a creepfest.

Kid Nation is CBS’ one new reality show. It puts forty kids (ages 8 to 15) in a ghost town and leaves them to create new society. Well. it doesn’t really leave them. Think Lord of the Flies meets Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
