It’s always fun to discover a new good show. Last year was VH1′s Cant Get A Date this year is Discovery Channel’s It Takes A Thief. I don’t know how long this show has been on or how behind the times I am with this but I just stumbled onto in 3 days ago and have since watched two episodes.
Here is the basic premise. . .
The Discovery website describes it as “a home burglary performed by convicted former thieves that is taped as it happens, followed by a lesson in what steps to take to prevent such a violation from occurring again.”
Two former burglars Matt & Jon case neighborhoods to find what they think would be the best break in on the block. They production team then gets the homeowners to agree to a break in sometime in the next 30 days. If they sign on, hidden cameras are put in their house and time ticks by. Eventually, Matt or Jon (or both) break into the home stealing whatever they can get their hands on. It usually plays out that the homeowners show up shortly after the break in and even know they are aware its a fake burglary, they get pissed feel violated and sometimes call the police. The couple then watches video of the break in (often far more violent then they would assume a fake break in would be) and meet the burglar who tells them how easy they make it to break in by not doing certain things.
After they couple feels completely stripped down and violated the production gives the home a complete home-security makeover, reworking everything from locks to landscaping. Then, the thieving duo tries to break in a second time to see if the homeowners have changed their safety ways and test the strength of the security makeover.
I really don’t think Im selling this as well as I could. I also think this may be more a guy show than a chick show but either way I encourage checking it out. The Discovery website says its on weekdays at 5pmET, but then another part of the website says 6pm. I caught it in rerun at 8am the other day. Check it out and let me know your thoughts.
Another good Discovery Channel show I stumbled onto this year is Dirty Jobs. . . but that’s another post altogether.
If you like it, spread it!:

I love this show! My fiance hates hit ’cause it makes him nervous that all our loot will get stolen some day. The guy that breaks in is a total jerk, though, he completely wrecks the houses. And I’ve seen him drive off with the homeowner’s dog. Harsh.
I frikken LOVE this show. And I have an insane crush on Matt. Just look at him… he’s adorable. (Yes, I am a lesbian. No, it doesn’t matter.)
I love this show. I want to be just like Jon Douglas Rainey when I grow up.
Another good show I discovered shortly before discovering this one over Christmas break was Cab Cash on A&E. Everyone should look into that one. It’s a game show, yes, but the BEST GAME SHOW EVER. Very addicting.
I think this show is stupid. My 14 y.o. son loves it. I find it totally staged and fake. The guys trash the houses, teaches viewers the best way to break into houses, then return to tell the homeowners to buy an alarm system. On the ‘follow up’ visit, they find open windows, unlocked doors and alarm systems not armed. I mean, the people are beggin’ to be ripped off again. And they KNOW the guys are coming back. DUMB. On the other hand, Dirty Jobs is fabulous, and I especially recommend the episode where Mike Rowe is in Africa at a monkey rehabilitation farm, or the one where he helped a young college student catch non-venomous water snakes in Ohio. Hi-Larious.
I love this show!!!
It’s really fascinating to see where the people “hide” their valuables to try to trick theives.
I have such a crush on them both, but Jon is such a hotty!!!
Taped a couple of these on your suggestion, MYL. Have to say it’s not half bad.
A little disturbed about the random breaking of things – I know they’re trying to teach the homeowners a “lesson”, but still – it IS a tv show!
The guys are truly hot though, I’ll keep settin the DVR so I’ll have something to watch during the old TV down time.
Gracias, MYL, gracias.
