cat060806I just read something that got me so excited, I actually was concerned for myself. Starting next week, Animal Planet will be airing a cat reality show. Yes, a cat reality show. Ten felines will live in a New York apartment Big Brother style and compete to be “feline vice president of research and development” for Meow Mix. Oh, and the two winners will get new families (they’re all strays). Granted, the entire show reeks of product placement — it’s essentially a commercial for Meow Mix, but seriously: ten cats living in a house together. It’s brilliant. Here’s the catch. The show will only air in three-minute segments (I don’t know if that’s three separate minute-long segments or segments that are three minutes long), but nevertheless, the reality show won’t be a lengthy affair. The segments will air every Friday starting on June 16th during the 9 PM hour. This could do for Animal Planet what that lovely British couple did for Taster’s Choice… or I could be the only one lame enough to tune in. Either way, I’m setting my season pass already. For more details, check out the article here or visit the annoyingly cutesy Meow Mix House website here.

I love that they have to describe it as a “reality show.” Good thing or we might have been confused as to whether or not it was a scripted drama.

What’s next? Maybe a feline “Surreal Life” featuring a house full of has-been cats, such as Morris, Bill the Cat from “Bloom County”, or Tony the Tiger.

How about a reality show called “Ant Farm”? You could just put a webcam on an ant farm and rake in the dough.

How awesome! I’m so TiVoing this. (I’m assuming it’s possible to TiVo a three-minute show?)

Wait what happens to the 8 “loser” cats that don’t win a new family?

I can already see the kitten filled sack floating down the hudson and the conclusion of this experiment.

    The AP article states:
“As the cats are put through their weekly paces in contests including best purr and top post-climber, a panel of judges will decide who stays and who goes. When a cat is voted out, it will move to a permanent home and get a year’s supply of Meow Mix as a consolation prize.”

So no worries, there will be no bags of kitties in the Hudson….I was a bit worried myself-then I read the article.

OK, so what clever phrase will be used whenever a cat loses?
