It’s a crowded field out there in cabletelevisionland and even the most staid respectable networks are going all-out, Jackass, X-Treme, Fox Reality, tabloid on us to get our attention. And it turns out that even the respected National Geographic Channel is no exception.

Then again, back in the 50s, a lot of guys liked to ogle those topless tribeswomen, right? So it’s in the grand old tradition of the Supemalo tribe of Oceania and the Long-Necked Women of Burma that the scholars at NGC are so excited about Taboo, a Mondo-Cane-y, Strange Universey series “that challenges the way we look at other cultures and ourselves, by exploring practices that are completely normal to their participants but seem brutal, disgusting or even immoral to many of us today.”

Key words: Brutal. Disgusting. Immoral. Ka-ching!

Suburban guys hanging themselves on meat hooks… primitive tribes using razorblades to create alligator boys… boxing girly boys…

The series premieres tomorrow night, so the NGC folks sent us a couple of clips.

But they’re too gross to post!

So we’ll show you… after the jump!

Meathooks above. See the alligator boys here. But beware!

Taboo premieres tomorrow at 9 pm ET/PT with the very serious sounding “life-threatening initiation rituals and painful ceremonies that must be performed to fulfill community acceptance,” and then move to Wednesdays at 10 with episodes on the meathook gang and third sexers and all the other stories we did in a series called Bizarre Moments on Video for Fox about eight years ago.
