Survivor meets politics on MySpace

Somebody’s finally putting MySpace to work on television, and oddly enough it’s got nothing to do with dating, comedians or rock bands. Well, maybe comedians. Survivor” honcho Mark Burnett is planning to use Rupert Murdoch’s networking site for a political reality show for the Internet and television.

Rupert Murdoch and politics? Strange, we realize, but Independent is planned to get those young kids interested in the 2008 elections by running an election of its own. Candidates will be selected among users who submit themselves via video posted on MySpace. They’ll create MySpace pages that will serve as their campaign headquarters, and then MySpace users and TV viewers will rate their performances and ideas in interactive “town hall” forums.

The winner will get $1 million, but must spend it on a political cause or local campaign. The television show hasn’t been sold to a network yet.

The show’s planned to debut next year, with the Brit Burnett and former Aussie Murdoch hope to spur young voters’ interest in the 2008 election. It hasn’t been sold to a network yet. Though we’d bet Fox News might find a slot. If they’re filling time with Hannity’s America, they should.

(And how about that great moment in Idol Gives Back, when MySpace founder Tom Anderson was introduced from the audience and they had him twist around in his seat to face the camera the same way he does in his default “friend” picture on the site? Funny.)

    I think that, if this works (and it has the definite potential to bomb) that it’s a great idea. I think kids today are growing more cynical and skeptical of the political process. It’s a sad fact, but it’s becoming “cool” to be ignorant of what’s going on in the world.
