Uh… what?  I have to be honest, I wasn’t super excited to watch/recap this show.  Having no genuine interest in fashion or arts and crafts, Runway is about as much as I can take of this particular reality genre, and I pretty much only watch so I can have more fodder for my imaginary friendship with Tim Gunn.  An entire show focused on the Bluefly wall seemed like the Top Chef: Just Desserts of the Runway franchise – too much of something that isn’t the main course.

But yeah, I’m a total fucking idiot because people and this show are BADASS.  It’s not the Top Chef: Just Desserts of the Runway Franchise – it’s the Top Chef: Beef and Habaneros (were such a thing to exist)!  The contestants come off douchey enough – gay black guy from Baltimore who makes church hats, weirdo Leathah Stella wannabe who’s the first person to cry and have a “breakdown,” doe eyed, pretty girl named Maria who also cries, but has the talent to back it up, etc.  THEN Molly Sims takes them to storage units in Jersey full of trash, and after everyone races around grabbing couch springs, ice skates, rat traps and Chinese parasols, and the wire cutters, spray paint, and BLOW torches come out.  These guys may not be the stars of the franchise, and their host (Molly Sims) and mentor (pretty lady, can’t remember who she is) need significant personality transplants, but they bring the pretty with metal and FIRE.  For that, I respect them.

Also, I realize that I’m spending less and less time trying to convince myself that the winning pieces AREN’T in fact heinous.  The jewelry/bags/belts/headpieces that get made today, and those previewed throughout the show look amazing.  There was only one contestant who made something that made me laugh out loud, and I don’t know about you Gasmii, I’d rather clutch my boobs in desire than roll my eyes in disgust any day of the week.  I like the ratio of awesome to crap this show is already promoting.

Stay tuned for the full recap in the next few days to find out who won, who lost, background on the other judges and a debate on whether guest judge Debra Messing is pregnant again…

Alejandra lives in Los Angeles and is an actor/writer/producer of opinions.  She loves the beach, but never goes, and hates reality stars, but follows them religiously.  In addition to TVGasm, you can read her writing at the online magazine DigN2It, or various fanfiction websites if you're industrious enough to find her.  If you're not industrious at all, a bottle of fine wine will always be an acceptable bribe.

From the first episode I was reminded of what PR USED to be. This one looks promising.

I didn’t see it all, but went ahead and taped it, coz watching the runway made me super curious. It does look fun. I dug the short, bearish looking guy, you know, that way . . . and otherwise found it creative and fresh. Glad you’re capping, Alej!!!

I liked it more than I thought I would, too. My prediction is that the person who came in second wins it all. Loved that look the best. Glad you are recapping this one, Alejandra!

it was refreshing to watch because PR has become so lame! the people were surprisingly non-aggravating. I thought something was up with Debs, her butt looked a lot bigger than it usually does but I figured she’s just been pounding away the donuts lately.

I enjoyed this way much more than expected. I agree with mnkid that it was a reminder of what PR once was. (long ago and far away)

Project Accessory looks good with talented designers , some of whom have already had high-profile interest in their designs….I can’t remember her name, but one of the girls had her jewelry worn by SJP in Sex in the City. There were some great designers who turned out gorgeous stuff made from cast-offs. I thought it was a very creative group and look forward to seeing more.

I’m very happy to hear that you will be recapping the show. I thought it was really interesting – it showed more of the design process than PR does these days.
