Minicap: Project Runway – Back to Your Roots

Project Runway

Some people’s roots are deeper than others

Hola Gasmii!!

It’s home visit time!!! We pared the crowd down to four and guess what? Even those four aren’t guaranteed a spot! It’s a good thing I’ve seen this before or I’d be so shocked that I might drop my glass of Port!

No I wouldn’t

Tim is going to the final four’s houses! This is one of my favorite parts of Project Runway because I love Tim and I love back stories and I love seeing what the designers can do if left to themselves.

Pretzel anyone?

Everyone basically gets a decent review from Tim. I should be disappointed at the lack of drama but I also hate episodes where Tim shows up and the designer is still in the sketching phase. This is one of the first times I’ve seen one, much less all, of the designers demonstrating that they worked hard and smart and have a great handle on the challenge ahead. Apparently no one told these people that they’re supposed to be unreliable, temperamental artists?

Always missed deadlines due to appointments with his ear nose and throat doctor

It’s possible I am just in a good mood because this episode has Tim and Dmitry meeting to act out two-thirds of my fantasy. Well, half, if you count a hot tub as a sentient being, which, on some nights, it certainly is.

Don’t let anyone kid you, this is the only reason anyone hurtles down an icy hill on a pair of toothpicks

When the designers return to Parson’s in NYC, they give each others’ designs the side-eye and I’m starting to think Tara is the only nice one left. A lot have tons of sewing left and I don’t get that since it’s been months. Are they instructed not to add their finishing touches until they hit the workroom? Is there some reason to wait for detailing and final touches from a design standpoint?

Besides the obvious, I mean

The designers are all a little lackluster and seem slightly under-prepared for their models to walk and it doesn’t feel as if many of them choose to send their best three looks down the runway.

Black and white, separates and booty shorts area the common themes, and for once Unibrow’s unique point of view is a breath of fresh air. Instead of a breath of Garbage Mountain.

Just throw a rope necklace on it. Genius!

The final results were well executed but a little underwhelming. By and large, it seemed like some very basic looks being sent down the runway for consideration for Fashion Week. Dmitry got criticized for poor styling, Unibrow for cheap looking fabrics and both Chris and Tara for being too basic and under-ambitious. Then again, this is the room that went pret-a-porter for the Avant Garde challenge.

Where’s Elena when you actually need her?

They had five weeks. That’s all. And unfortunately, it shows.

I want to know why Dmitry got two minutes of conversation time with Tim. Was there no one in all of Jersey City he could have invited over to provide background? Oh, my lonely little Belorussian exile, floating like a piece of driftwood through America! Please stop styling your models like Eurotrash versions of New Jersey housewives!

Chris seemed to have a major brain fart when he picked his 3 pieces. I think he was definitely having and “Oh shit!” moment during judging. I wasn’t blown away by Unibrow’s pieces. They looked like draped bedsheets and the accessories looked like plastic cross-stitch material. Hardly what *I* would expect from the final runway looks. But, then again, I shop at Marshall’s and Tarjay. I’m not edumacated in the fine art of high fashun.

Yeah, unlike in past seasons this time they only had five weeks. I actually liked the way they critique each other but are still very respectful and seem to care about each other, unlike in past seasons when the contestants are really rude and condescending all the time. These four, while not always understanding or agreeing with each others’ choices and designs still seem to give each other their due, even in talking heads where they have more freedom to be candid. I think that applies to all of them, not just Melissa.

Christopher had problems with fit on his models so his choices were limited due to not having enough time to adequately alter what he wanted to send to the panel that day. Until we’ve seen his entire collection I’ll reserve judgment. He did do separates so he has enormous potential to change things up and take notes from his panel judgment. The others have less room to move I think, although Dmitri needs to fix his styling ASAP. I love that guy, I want him to win. But not with those three things he put forth at panel. I get Fabio’s point of view, it’s very interesting. Melissa, to me, has the most problems in that her looks are pretty set IMO and she doesn’t have a lot of wiggle room to change them and they are the most – IMO – tame overall. Since this is Fashion week you are looking for some wow factor. Whether either she or Christopher can bring that is a question for me. I guess we’ll see what they finally pull off. I personally like Christopher and I know he wants to win as do they all but as the youngest I can’t root for him. He has a chance to grow and move up more than the others do. I still have to root for Dmitri; I love him and he needs the win. Now if he can just un-Eurotrash his styling a little bit that’d be great.

I want the 90 minutes back that I wasted watching this episode. The “vote off” was a total disappointment.

i have to say i thought all the designs were boring, and i can’t believe that fabio was the only one with any color. i admit i loved his necklaces/neckpieces. at least it was something different. i love dmitry, but the stuff from his final collection is so underwhelming considering how lovely i’ve thought most of his work has been during the season.

tomandlorenzo.com had a nice little wrap up about the season and how the past few have paled in comparison to early seasons in terms of creativity. the shortened work time (they used to have 8-10 weeks) is certainly a factor, but the shift from bravo to lifetime also seems to have shifted focus from creativity to stories. this is the tomandlorenzo.com post, and it might be worth a look because they include links to final collections by christian, rami, mila, kara saun, uli and a few others, including my absolute favorite winner of all time, season one’s jay (i’d forgotten how utterly fabulous his line was, so vibrant and fun). everything from the past 3 or 4 seasons completely pales by comparison.

@MrsMiaWallace 4 Brands Of Whore made me ROFL!
I know that was last week. But I got behind.

You day dream about Tim Gunn getting in your hot tub. I day dream about him getting on our sofa. To watch trashy reality shows with us. And comment on the outfits Real Housewives and Basketball Jump-Offs put on.

@andyourlittledogtoo It looked like Christopher made the stuff he wanted to use too small. Then next they showed Dmitri and 1 of his models talking about some pants being too big for her hips. (she’s the 1 that called them hips, not me)

I was so sure the next scene would be them swapping models. But they didn’t. Have they ever said if that’s against their rules? Because it seemed like the obvious thing to do.

I thought they would swap models too! They used to actually have to choose their models as part of the final show but we didn’t see that, they just showed up. I wonder if they were just given models? I think they make the collections with alteration room and then ‘fit’ the models they choose when they get to the workroom at fashion week. But you’re right, Christopher didn’t have enough time to fit his models and so many of his clothes were too small for some of them that it limited him. I wonder if that’s because he is so young and inexperienced that he simply forgot to take that into consideration? Huge mistake on his part I think. But it would have made sense to swap unless it was against the rules or there was some other reason that that wouldn’t work for Dmitri.

I agree that the first seasons had amazing collections. They seem to get more commercial and boring as the seasons go on. I am still trying to forgive them for awarding Anya and Gretchen’s collections. I just find it hard to hate on anyone this season though because I love them all as people and that almost never happens.

The designers generally don’t ‘finish’ many pieces (hems, sippers, etc.) so that they can more easily adjust to the fit of their models. That’s why I don’t understand why most of them had such fit issues. Fabio didn’t because his garments weren’t tailored/fitted. The other 3 designers all had heavily tailored/fitted items so it would be more of an issue with them, though they all indicated they had not hemmed and/or put zippers in many pieces. Still, they have to start with a garment that fits in ways they can’t change, ie., where the models back falls, how wide their shoulders are, what their rise is (for pants) and so on. They could all have used one more day and whatever they chose could have been made to fit quite well.

Yes, I design and sew most of my own personal clothing.

Ok, this will sound conspiracy-theoryish but I really suspect producer meddling. Every single season, for as far back as I can remember, the judges have berated the finalists for not wowing them with their selections from their collection. They have been given lectures time and again about picking the best pieces from their line. And every single time they DON’t pick the best pieces and the judges say, “What were you waiting for? This is IT! It’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week!” When Melissa and Chris both picked underwhelming pieces I was like, “You guys have watched this show. You know the deal. What’s going on here?”

Actually, after thinking about it, I do kind of understand NOT sending WOW! pieces before the judges. Their goal, as stated by my brother Tim, is that they send down 3 looks that best represent their collection. Knowing that, if a designer has only one evening gown, for example, they probably should not select it as one of the 3. I think Dmitrys mistake was twofold – trying to show too many pieces and not showing any of his colored pieces – he did have more than one so the color could be representative.

I also suspect that Christophers WERE representative of his collection – weird, hookerish and too much alike. As to Melissa, I just don’t know. Her bipolar confessionals (“I’m so confident!” “I’m so insecure!” “I love my collection!” “I think I may have missed the mark.”) give me a headache. As to Fabio, I get it but I also understand Nina’s remarks about looking luxurious. Designers who produce floaty boho-chic ensembles generally don’t show at Fashion Week unless that’s only a small part of their collection.

At this point, I can’t begin to guess who will win.

Or if winning is even worth it for them.

Dmitry’s styling clearly targets the Russian emigre population in Marseilles. That’s why his overall look is always so gaudy and overdone. Because that is what his market really loves.

Don’t they always make the finalists design an 11th piece at the last minute? They didn’t do it this season, because it was pretty obvious that none of these people are ready for a runway. They may be decent designers — but none of them are capable of carrying a collection. They’re more the type who become part of the design team for a large-scale retail clothing chain. I was especially disappointed by Melisma, who seemed to have pussied out — she was a better designer before the competition started.

Mrs. Itchy watched this episode with me (first time ever! she can’t understand why I would watch this show. I tried to explain it was all Flipit’s fault…). Anyway, she was delighted to note how old Heidi looks. But she was also impressed that Heidi’s not trying to hide her age.

Heidi may not be trying to hide her age (and kudos for that) but she really needs to rethink super short, tight and shiny IF she is going to put herself as an arbiter of fashion. Some of her clothing this season has left absolutely nothing to the imagination and was not flattering on her. She’s still a beautiful woman but her taste level seems to be right there with Buffi’s.

My now 18 year old son used to watch with me when he was younger. Of course, I figured out pretty quickly he was intrigued less by the fashion than by the glimpses of scantily clad models. :)

I dunno..I am still a fan, but I can’t help remembering the fantastic clothes that earlier designers put out for the finale. People like Jay, Jillian and Seth had detailed coats and multiple separates! I have seen alot of sleeveless and strapless dresses and plain vests these past few seasons that are just unoriginal and sad. Maybe it started with Gretchen or Anna, but the quality of the clothes has really gone down IMHO.
