Minicap: Project Runway – The L’Oreal Commercial

The judges were wildly inconsistent and called some designers one-note, critiqued others for not showing a cohesive point of view (so, too many notes?), and raved about a past dress of Dmitry’s that as I recall was sent straight to the Safety Zone during the actual challenge! We ended up with a winner I love, although I actually hated their piece this week, and a loser I love, but I hated their piece even more this week. The final tally for Fashion Week is 4 designers, but we see a teaser indicating there will be an additional cut before the big show.

It’s wonderful to be back and join me shortly for the full cap!!

Xoxo,

PS Who am I kidding? I’m only happy to be back so I can make enough money to leave again!

Welcome back Mrs. Mia!!! Can’t wait for the full cap. I’m still pissed they cut elena, the avant garde designer, before the avant garde challenge!!!! Grrrrr . . . . over baby clothes!!! I feel robbed by not getting to see her finally do something she actually does.

I’m of the opinion that Christopher has no esthetic, nor does Sonji . . . Dimi is always tight and clean, but I’m not sure of his either. Tara, I can pretty much see, and Uni has a certain loose fitting thing he seems to do.

I loved Dimi’s look this week . . . super sharp. Didn’t love the hem, or the collar, but the tailoring was impeccable!!!

The rest were awful, and Christopher’s was so cliche. None of them were AG, and lastly, using their whole portfolios, and only mentioning the strong looks from certain people feels very unfair to me.

The judges will give this to Christopher, it is written in the stars (and not a spoiler, coz it’s my guess) but seriously . . . the whole thing, it’s just so slanted toward him, and I don’t see it or why . . . I imagine somewhere will eventually post his whole season’s works together and I can see again, instead of trying to picture it, but meh anyway!!!

And I’ve seen the collections, and I honestly can’t imagine who wins, or how they justify it . . . but what do I know!!!

Every time Nina said “one trick pony ” – I yelled at the TV, it’s “one way monkey you baby eater”!! I was a little surprised at who went home and I didn’t find any of the looks avant gard. Chris March and Christen. ‘ big collar monstasity came to my mind.

Welcome back Mrs Mia, the fill in recapper did an awesome job too.

    Welcome back MrsMia!

Clearly the only people on that show who had a clue as to what constitutes avant-garde was Kors, Nina and (surprisingly) Ms. Saldana. Padded hips doth not avant-garde make. Neither does garish green fabric, using a print (horrors!), making a vampirish neckline or and jacket that can be worn upside down or downside up. Well, actually, that last one comes closest to being avant-garde but what a huge hot tub full of disappointment this episode was.

In all fairness I think Dmitri’s suit was Soviet-era avant garde. ‘In Soviet Russia, skirt wear you!’ :)

I didn’t really get this whole episode either. I loved seeing the castle because when I used to watch Bridezillas back years ago there was this obsessive bride who had her wedding there and it amazed me that there was a place like that to have a wedding in on the East Coast. She was a trainwreck but her wedding location was spectacular! The whole L’Oreal commercial aspect of the avant garde challenge annoyed me though. It was so limiting, and the colors were horrible. I longed for avant garde challenges of yesteryear (and their location hops! Remember Paris!!??) All in all a very low budget and narrow challenge for purely commercial reasons. PR doesn’t have commercials any more, it has been completely taken over by commercials at this point. Always an issue, but it’s grown to monumental levels with this season. Very annoying.

I have no idea how what Dmitri did was avant garde. At all. But it was exquisite. And I want him to win so I’m happy the judges picked him. And I really like Christopher as a person, I really do. I like Fabio and Melissa too. I just really like all of them. (I liked Sonija personally but it was right to cut her, that mesh back was terrible. She just seemed to have lost her way the last few weeks. I’ll miss her though.)

I’m happy that there is no Gretchen and Ivy crapfest this season. I think no matter who wins I can be sincerely happy for them. But I am still rooting for Dmitri.

Now if someone could just explain that suit to me….

Seriously, I don’t think there have ever been as much dissonance in the judges’ opinions as in this challenge. Zoe Saldana did not help matters at all, as she seemed to give her critique based on the ‘eeny-meeny-miny-mo principle’.
And Heidi came out swinging with such TOTAL LACK OF TASTE it was amazing how she actually made it in the fashion industry in the first place. Starting with that monstrosity bachelorette-party-the-morning-after dress abortion. That thing was hideous! And so were majority of her judgements.
Totally agree with the loser choice. That dress does not even deserve that name. How the designer was not ashamed to let it go down the runway, but actually was impressed with the design I’ll never comprehend. The winner? Mehhh. I guess any of the three would do.
The only other stand-out for me was the dumpster-diver’s creation. In a VERY BAD WAY! That jacket was awful, non-functional, uncomfortable, lacking the wow-effect or any forward thinking. Had the loser not been there, I think this one would have been the correct send-home choice. I can’t imagine how his collection is going to look, he is so all over the place. It is my suspicion that he gets eliminated next week, in that front-door-slamming-you-in-the-face FINAL final elimination. (And why do they always have to pull the same shit with pretend selections etc? We’ve been watching this show for so long now, we all know what is coming ’round the corner. It feels insulting to our intelligence. Why do they even bother? Just to piss me off, I guess….)

    Welcome back Mrs. Mia!!!

Fatcamp did a great job with the recap but I would still love to hear your views of that episode because dmitry outdid himself with dry one liners.

this episode was a snooze with one exception, dmiitry was divine in those leather pants. I found myself quite distracted. I will also have to admit that I missed Elena. The workroom was too quit without her.

Lastly, who on earth dressed Heidi for this episode?????

I too was struck by how poorly Heidi dressed this episode. I mean, I usually don’t like what she wears, and both clothing lines she has showcased on this show have been ugly in my opinion (her fabric selections are just awful!) but I was really struck by it this episode. I wonder if Seal was indeed ‘dressing’ her all along. :)

Her panel judgments were also kinda weird. I much preferred Zoe Saldana’s participation, I thought she made a lot of good detailed points and mostly contradicted Heidi as well. I didn’t see avant garde on the runway, but if you take that specific out of the equation it was a very well made group of clothes. The folks this season have some skills on that level. That is refreshing.

Indeed….Dmitri’s leather pants totally uplifted an otherwise lackluster episode. Team Dmitri!

No way did Chris just “happen” to be the last one picked, and get to choose which look he wanted to do. That was totally set up.

Chris is truly and enchanted queen….
if Dimitry is a queen, then this girl is sad, what sexy eastern block of a man in leather pants!
Heidi, seriously girl..have you gained weight and are still trying to stuff into the sample size 0 ? Her fashion has been tragic this season.
