Poor Cat, she hates Thursdays so much; she has to say good-bye to another two of her “babies”. The wardrobe people must feel sorry for her because her outfit on Thursday is always much MUCH better than the Wednesday ones. Tonight she’s rocking the Tony Manero look. THIS. Is So You Think You Can Dance (dance…..dance)!

A VAST improvement over the blood clot she was sporting last night.
We start the night with a group number choreographed by Mia Michaels. I think Mia may have been watching the Real World Road Rules Challenge recently because she’s gone all aboriginal businessman on our asses. They’re dancing to “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder, and while Mia may irritate the shit out of me, I have to say, I do love this number.

I still think Mia is a bitch, but I can’t deny that that number kicked ass.

I’m soooooooo wonderful, aren’t I?
Cat reminds us again about how the show works, and then asks us to welcome the judges. Lil C is back tonight with Nigel and Mary, and Cat tells him he was in rare form last night. Cue the montage of Lil C’s comments from last night, but this time they’re interspersed with reaction shots from the audience which are hilarious.

Lil C is cracking up by the end of the montage, and Cat bows down to him chanting, “Respect, respect.” I don’t normally like the montages, but that was cute. I love that he’s got such a great sense of humor about himself. Note to Nigel: Never never ever ever let Mia near him again. Please and thank you.
Cat says enough silliness, let’s get to the results and bring out our first set of three couples. In this group we have Ade and Melissa, Jason and Caitlin, and Phillip and Jeanine.

So unless two people are in the bottom in this first group, at least one of my predictions from last night is wrong. Cat starts with Melissa and Ade. Last night they danced a Sonya jazz routine and wowed the judges. Did the voters feel the same way? YES! They are safe.
Jason and Caitlin struggled with a Shane Sparks’ hip hop routine while Phillip and Jeanine mangled the tango. Which did the audience prefer? Phillip (and Jeanine). DURRRRRR. Is Mary surprised that Jason and Caitlin ended up in the bottom three? Not really. But she is slightly disappointed. She advises them to do their best on their solos. Great advice Mary!
Let’s move on to the next three couples. This time we have Brandon and Janette, Jonathan and Karla, and Kupono and Ashley.

This grouping has me biting my nails a little bit. I think it should be Kupono and Ashley in the bottom, but I’m worried that it will be Jonathan and Karla. But the first ones up are Brandon and Janette. Last night they brought the disco fever to the stage, but did America feel the heat? They did. Safe!
Karla and Jonathan danced a beautiful contemporary routine, while Ashley and Kupono limped through the other Shane Sparks’ hip hop number. Fingers crossed……….Karla and Jonathan are SAFE! Whew. I’m glad my bad feeling was wrong. Of course this mean Kupono and Ashley will be dancing for their lives. Interestingly Karla and Jonathan run off the stage without bothering to give Kupono and Ashley the usual “so sorry you’re in the bottom” hug. I wonder if that means one of them is an asshole?
Cat wants to know if Lil C is shocked. He is. Sorta. Well, not really. They started out with a bang in the first show with the Wade Robson number, but this week they just didn’t hit it. He thinks it showed how vulnerable they are when taken out of the comfortability of their dance genre.

Huh. I never of thought of it like that. Thanks Lil C!
Alright, let’s get to the final three couples. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, this group includes Evan and Randi, Vitolio and Asuka, and Max and Kayla.

But before we get to the results, Cat has a little surprise for Evan. You know they’re currently auditioning for season six, right? Well, guess who showed up in LA to audition?

YAY!!! Please let him make it into the top twenty this time.
Well, the surprise isn’t THAT awesome, but it’s pretty good. Ryan made it straight through to Vegas. Yay Ryan! Cat says she cried like a big idiot. I love her. Do we even need to talk about Evan and Randi’s dance after that? There’s no way they’re going to follow that with Evan ending up in the bottom. Of course they’re safe.
Which definitely means Vitolio and Asuka are in the bottom. There’s no way Max and Kayla will be in it, not after the judges keep telling all of us how incredible Kayla is, right? WRONG. Apparently the voters get as annoyed as I do by all the Kayla ass licking going on and they have sent her butt to the bottom three. Does she deserve to be there? No. But maybe it will shut the judges up a little.

Don’t worry Kayla, there’s no way Nigel’s letting you get the boot
Speaking of Nigel, was he shocked? Yes and No. Really, Nigel? Yes and No? Way to commit. He thinks it all depends on the routines that they do, and while he loves Brian Friedman, he thinks that many people may not have understood that number. In other words, if you didn’t vote for them you are a moron.

You know who you are
Whatever. You’re in good company because I didn’t vote for them either. Oh wait. Nevermind. I didn’t vote for anyone.
While the dancers prepare for their solos, it’s time for another guest appearance from the world of dance. This time it’s Amrampali Ambegaokar performing a Bollywood routine. It’s a very different feel from what we’ve seen of Bollywood on this show. She starts off more slowly, with a lot of graceful hand and leg movements. She does pick up speed whirling around the stage and then begins a series of quick stamping steps that are insanely fast and make me tired just watching her.

My sister had me cracking up during this part because she swore that when the music went all staccato it sounded like the singer was saying suckitsuckitsuckitsuckitsuckitsuckit over and over again. And you know what? The second time around that’s all I could hear. It’s like when the guy did the bit about “Circle of Life” and he said the chanting in the beginning sounded like they were saying “pink pajamas penguins on the bottom”. I can’t ever listen to that song without hearing that now. Shit. I wish I knew who that guy was.

I really hope this movie is as funny as I want it to be. But I have a bad feeling about it.
Back to the show! It’s time for the dancers to perform their solos. First up is Caitlin.

I really like it. She shows us what she can do without cramming the solo full of tricks. Very nice. Following Caitlin is her partner, Jason.

This kid is not going anywhere. He gets so freaking high in the sir when he does his leaps, I love it. The only thing I would say is that he crammed a lot in there, but honestly it didn’t bother me because it flowed from one move to the next.
Ashley’s up next and she’s working a little bit of a Bebe Neuwirth vibe for me tonight.

Doncha think?
Unfortunately she’s got the Bebe vibe working for her look, but not so much for her dancing. It wasn’t terrible; it just wasn’t much of anything. She needs to pray that Kayla comes out and farts her way across the stage or something.
Following Ashley is Kupono. I really don’t know what to make of him.

Does he have to take a dump or is he waiting for some other sort of ass action?
Aside from one pirouette at the end of his solo, there really isn’t much else there. I guess there’s something in there, he’s got some quirky style and movement going on, but really there’s not much to it. I think he might get his ass sent home for that.
The last girl to dance to night is Kayla.

Her solo is like a moving definition of trying too hard. It’s interesting because I don’t think there’s a chance in hell she’s going home, but she must think there is because she crams as much as she possibly can into the little time she has. It’s like the polar opposite of Ashley’s solo.
Last up is Max. This should be interesting since he is used to always dancing with a partner.

This about sums it up
Yep. It is boring as hell. I think Kupono should bake him a cake because Max may have just saved his ass. Although, he is the only ballroom guy (I’m not counting Jonathan) so I’m sure Mary will fight like hell to keep him. And they do sometimes give them a pass on the first solo because of the whole partner thing. We shall see.
Cat sends the judges off to deliberate. And lucky us! We get treated to another guest performance. But not the good dancing kind. This one is one of the sucky singing ones.

Sorry! I meant to say sucky lip-syncing.
I mean it’s pretty fucking bad when you can’t lip sync to your own hit single! I could do a better job on this performance than she does. Oh. I think I forgot to mention the performer’s name is Kristinia DeBarge. Write it down so you never buy tickets to her concert. UGH. Make it stop. Although to be fair, it’s not like she actually wrote the song or anything, so why should she lip-sync sing it well either? I guess it really is all about who you know.

Alrighty. After a quick commercial break, it’s time to find out which dancers will get the boot this week. Ladies first. Nigel first tells us that they are not unanimous on either if the decisions tonight. AND he adds that if it were up to them they would not lose any of this six tonight.

Who would you lose? Who? Who?
He’s not telling. Damn! Moving onward. He begins with Caitlin. They felt that she had great quality of movement, really good control and it helped erase their memory of the hip hop number. Ashley’s turn. She had wonderful Hollywood glamour, but her solo was lacking substance. For Kayla, he tells her that they all know what a wonderful dancer she is, but tonight she has to prove that to everyone watching. They felt her solo was crowded.
Color me surprised, I actually agreed with everything Nigel just said. He repeats one more time that the decision is not unanimous before telling Ashley she has been given the old heave ho. I’m not surprised or really saddened by this. I mean, I thought she was a good dancer, and I loved the Wade routine from last week, but I can’t say I’ll really miss her.

In a couple of weeks I’ll barely remember her name
Let’s move on to the guys. Jason is up first. They thought his solo was exceptionally strong and Nigel thinks it was the best solo of the series to date. I am not in agreement with him on that. I do agree that Jason’s solo was fantastic, but no one will ever top Danny’s solos in my book.

Sorry dude. I just call ‘em like I see ‘em.
Regardless of the difference of opinion, Nigel and I both agree it would be crazy to send this kid home. He is safe. Kupono gets basically the same critique as Ashley; very little substance to his solo, and I am thinking he may be going home with her which is a shame because I’d like to see more of him.
Nigel tells Max no one could impress them more than him when it comes to hard work. And they know it’s tough to do a solo when you usually dance with a partner. Again. This was not a unanimous decision, but the guy going home tonight is……….Max!

This one actually surprised me. I thought for sure they’d keep around a little bit longer. Mary must be P-I-S-S-E-D, y’all. Personally, I am not sad to see him go. Kayla and Kupono could turn out to be a really interesting couple. I’m excited to see how they’ll work together.
So that’s it for this week Gasmi. What did you think? Were you sad to see Max or Ashley go? Who were you hoping would get the boot? I’m excited to see what next week brings; hopefully it’ll be right back up there in terms of performance levels. Either way, it’ll be fun to watch.
SWAK, PottyMouth
If you like it, spread it!:

I totally agree w/ you about Danny’s solos…when Nigel said Jason’s was the best solo they’d ever seen on the show, I was like, WHOA THERE, let’s not forget Danny’s solo in the top 4 to Gavin Degraw’s version of “We Are the Champions”…those turning split jumps (not sure of the technical term) all the way around the stage STILL amaze me!!
Max and what’s left of his hair are gone too soon.
I want to like Kupono, but he’s making it hard. His solo was lackluster and his wardrobe is viciously bad. Painful to look at.
Based on performance, Phillip should have gotten the boot his week. I’m not really attached to anyone yet so I don’t much care.
As for Danny…he is the best dancer this show has ever seen…far above any other contestant. I never figured out why the judges were so luke-warm to him.
Did anyone happen to notice whether Cat said that the 3 pairs were the bottom 3? Dialidol.com listed Cait and Jason, Melissa and Ade, and Randi and Evan as the bottom 3. 3 couples that the judges would have trouble with for cuts. I call shenanigans.
Melissa deserved to go based on her solo, but I was disappointed that it wasn’t Randi (see above).
I thought Maksim had a much better solo than Kupono, but Max lacked so much in personality. I think he was bringing Kayla down.
Jonathan and Vitolio need to learn how to win gracefully. They should at least ACT like they feel sorry for the couple in the bottom three.
The first time Nigel said that Kayla was a contender I thought, shut up Nigel, you’re not doing her any favors. I’m in the same boat as most people, I think she can dance but haven’t seen anything to warrant the excessive praise. Still, I would like to see her succeed or fail on her own merit, and not get sent home because people don’t want to be told who to vote for.
Ashley was fast becoming my favorite female dancer, so I was sad “ well, actually pissed “ to see her go, especially since Caitlin is so much more deserving of a ticket home. Ashley should have dyed her hair blond before the season started, she might have made it through. Max was also robbed. I’m altogether disappointed in the cuts this week.
You had the same thought I did when Nigel said that they didn’t want to lose any of the bottom six this week. Some of the people who made it through must have been thinking, “You Bastard!”
And please PottyMouth, less pics of Hugh Jackman and more pics of Monica Bellucci. Monica Bellucci with an adamantite laced skeleton and a bad attitude. I’m so turned on right now.
Danny was the best dancer ever on SYTYCD!!!! No one can compare so I wish Nigel would stop bullsh*tting us. And I still haven’t fallen in love with any of the dancers most of them are just bleh for me-I do like Ryans brother-he is sweet but i think his brother is the better dancer-great recap Pottymouth-keep up the good work-this is my fourth year here on tvgasm and its still my favorite recap center-thanx!
ohhhyeah…fewer pictures of Hugh is NEVER the answer.
Never.
Before the solos I thought for sure that Caitlin was going to go, but after having watched the solos, I think they made the right choice (although I thought Kayla’s was pretty awful – it looked panicked).
I really thought that Kapono was going to go given that Max was the only ballroom guy (I can’t count Jonathan becasue he…well… doesn’t dance his on genre very well). I feel bad for Max – I kinda like him. Mary Murphy looked like she was going to be sick before they announced which guy was going home.
I actually feel bad for both Ashley and Max – knowing they auditioned do often. To finally make it and be sent home almost before it began seems sad. I know someone has to go but…
Thanks for the great recaps
I totally agree that Danny was the best dancer to ever grace the SYTYCD stage. I hate that the judges conveniently forget that he was awesomeness personified. I thought they didn’t like him because he didn’t really kiss ass; they misread his shyness as arrogance, and wrote him off from there.
Feel free to throw in some Danny pics if you get tired of recycling Hugh, PM.
I took Nigel’s comment about Jason’s solo as the best solo of this season to date… Don’t the Brits say ‘series’ when we mean ‘season’? (I feel like I just learned that recently, but I could be wrong.) And of course, my head just could never get around the idea that that solo was better than anything Danny ever did on the show, including whatever he did during the opening 5 second intro. I like Jason, but no one danced like Danny.
And I agree, the answer to any question is NEVER less Hugh Jackman. The answer is always MORE Hugh.
I do so love how you manage to insert pictures of Hugh… Adds a certain, I don’t know, awesomeness to an already great recap.
Danny was labeled unfairly that he was cocky, kind of like with Brandon. I am hoping that it doesn’t stick with Brandon however because he should be judged on his dancing and not what Mia thinks is an attitude problem. I think that is what did Danny in, since Sabra was so friendly and likeable. As much as I loved Sabra, Danny was a much better dancer.
And in regards to the performer, I agree her lip syncing was horrible! Sean Kingston performed last week and he sounded pretty bad, but at least he didn’t lip sync. Maybe there is a middle ground? Like someone who can really sing?
I wasn’t surprised that Ashley went home after her solo. She kind of did it to herself and gave them an excuse (much like Jesus did in Season 3 — I’m still bitter about that one though!).
Ashley was really growing on me though, and I feel that in the long haul she would have delivered more interesting performances than Caitlin will. But Caitlin really “danced for her life” and delivered a brilliant solo — and NIgel thinks she’s hot, so…
As for Max and Kupono — I’d be outraged if I liked Max more. Max’s solo wasn’t great, but he did more in his solo and in the partner performance than Kupono did in either and I think he deserved to stay over ‘pono. Especially considering Nigel’s blathering about how they take diversity into consideration…wasn’t that the excuse he used for keeping Asuka last week? But I’ve learned over the seasons not to take any excuse Nigel gives for judging decisions seriously. He just pulls it out of his arse week by week as far as I can see
That said, It will be interesting to see what happens with Kayla and ‘Pono next week. Hope he steps it up!
I totally agree with the whole Danny having better solos thing. He was amazing! But, my personal fave from that season was Neil & his solos were better than Jason’s also. I hope rjfrankel is right about series meaning season to a Brit, otherwise Nigel lost his freakin mind!
I thought I’d repost this from the previous recap (about Cat dressing herself this year), since the new one is up:
“PottyMouth:
It believe it was the most recent issue of EW. It was a double issue full of “Musts” of the year, and Cat was the Must Host. (It has the uber-hot Ryan Reynolds on the cover.)
If you listen carefully, the other night when Nigel complimented her on how awesome she looked in her white suit, she said that her boyfriend will be happy to hear that, since he bought it for her.
”
Also – Cat is starting to do a weekly (I think) blog about the show on EW.
Great recap. Nothing to add.
I dated a Brit and he always said “Series” for “Season” and it always threw me off. That plus I never really paid attention to season numbers. He’d go on and on about such and such show – from series 2.
I was very sad to see Max go. I think his personality was just starting to show and he seemed cute and shy. He was an awesome dancer and they raved about both of his routines.
They told the ballerina girl last week that they were basing her going on more than just her solo – but on her whole body of work. If they had used that criteria for Max there is no way he would have gone home.
As for Bebe Notworth – she looked cute for the elimination show but other than that she never really stood out for me.
shibaby: I’ll have to rewatch that one. I love me some Danny.
cattyfan: I agree about Kupono “ his solo was so bad I thought for sure he was going to go. Poor Max.
tv freak: I don’t know anything about dialidol, but Cat always says it’s the bottom three. I just don’t know how reliable the whole dialidol thing is since I know nothing about it.
ohhhyeah: Unfortunately Caitlin really danced whereas Ashley didn’t do much of anything. As far as the Hugh thing goes, well, I don’t think I can comply with that request. I have an addiction to Hugh, you see, and the only way to ensure I don’t go bugnut bonkers is to make sure I see pix of him regularly. But I will see what I can do about incorporating some hot mamas for those of you that don’t feel the same way about Hugh that I do
yuds101: I think every year we hear that on shows like this “ this year is the best group we’ve ever seen¦.blah blah blah. What else are they going to say?
cattyfan: I could not agree more.
Brat: I’m sure Mary was pissed as hell to lose Max. I can’t blame her – Kupono’s solo was like a giant dump on that stage.
here4beer: I may have to throw in some Danny videos! I will never get tired of Hugh! Never I say!!!
rjfrankel: If Nigel meant the best so far, that’s even stupider. There’s only been five other solos! Either way, I call dumbass on that statement! Glad you’re enjoying the Hugh pix!
blazergirl: It is a sad sad thing when we define someone who can actually sing as “middle ground”. But I agree. The Danny cocky/arrogant thing pissed me off to no end on his season, and it still irks me. I also hope they don’t continue down that road with Brandon.
Lizbot: Totally agree about Ashley. I’m also really curious to see what Kupono will bring to the table with Kayla.
Brattygrl: I enjoyed Neil, but to me he never held a candle to Danny. Neil’s solo were fun, Danny’s were brilliance.
qupert: Thanks again for the info “ I tracked it down to read. I do love Cat! She seems like someone that would be a blast to hang out with. But she needs a bigger mirror in her dressing room.
fire@will: Thanks.
Tink: Bebe Notworth “ LMAO! I did a double take on that ˜cause I thought you misspelled it, and then my brain registered it. Love it!
So I stumbled across “Famous Hangers with Cat Deeley” on myspace. Cat explains that she loves vintage, frequents flea markets, and no longer has a stylist. I believe it. If you go on her myspace page, the video is in the about me section. Enjoy!
Oh yeah, she loves the bloodclot dress…
Pottymouth – hey, just wanted to tell you that I follow your recaps religiously. Hopefully this comment posts – I’m a ‘tard that perpertually is having trubs with the gasmi site booting my ass off. Anyway, Kayla…I am SO frickin’ tired of the Kayla pimping. I think she irks me for several reasons. Her “brilliance” hasn’t been that evident to me, for one. Her personality is just meh, so far. She’s probably just shy, but she comes off boring or arrogant maybe? And perhaps that is why the judges are constantly pimping her? Anyway, I hate being told who to like also.
