I wondered what happened to that last recap. Thanks for the update.
I went for two days without power last year so I feel your pain.
uh, that Blair doesn’t seem to like your boy Malcolm. Somebody needs to shank her quick.
Well, the cardinal rule to remember while on or watching Survivor is simple: EVERYONE LIES. Literally, everyone.
POTTYMOUTH! I”m so glad you are okay, and sorry that you had to deal with all that horribleness. And you’re right, this was an AMAZING episode (for once), that Tribal Council was insane, I think these might just be the stupidest players yet.
As for last week’s show, we totally forgot about it since it was Halloween, so we missed it, too. Itchy’s gonna be pissed about Boobs being gone…
love, J-Mo
I still have friends with no power up north, so you’re totally excused in my book. Can’t wait till the full recap – I was soooo confused at tribal.
Hot sauce or not, I’m loving me some Blair Warner!
I hear ya Potty-kins—am an Easter coaster and we had the weather from suckage. I have my home but know some people who lost theirs. It sucks on sucks and I am glad you are OK.
Lisa “Blair and Micky Mouse Club” Welchel–omg…..does she have a series riding on this show?????? Girl is a shark!!!!!!
Sorry to say I am having a hard time rooting against “Blair”. She is a good player, but I was a little suprised to see her reveal Malcom’s hidden immunity idol….
Oh and any recapper that quotes Princess Bride is good in my book….
Best episode in a long long time. Like years. Almost makes up for the fact that they voted out the hottest bikini bod in Survivor history last week. Almost.
I’m torn with Lisa. On the one hand, I’m surprised to see her step it up like this — I suppose the hot sauce in the mouth thing ought to have been a tipoff, but damn, she is one evil bitch. On the other hand, she’s also an idiot who clearly doesn’t know how to keep her mouth shut.
Speaking of idiots: Flabby Maria. Nuff said.
I was happy to see Jeff go. The guy is an ass — and proved it heartily again in his closing video.
I’m rooting for Penner, even though I know he’s a lost cause.
I was so glad to see that arrogant ignoramus leave this week! After earning $60M in baseball, the (only) $1M prize from Survivor ($600,000 after taxes, mind you) is peanuts to him? Well, not all (or in my case, any) of us are in the 1%…
I am still hoping for a Penner, Denise or Malcolm win!
Looking forward to the full recap and more Princess Bride references.
After all these years, this show still has me shouting at my TV, rooting Penner on as he fought to win that damn immunity necklace. What other show can do that?
Itchy: WORD. That fucking asshole’s petulant, whiny, sore-loser rant just proved that my initial douchevibe from him was right on the money. Also, loved his blaming the President for all taxes, like this is something new that was just enacted in the last four years?
love, J-Mo
First, I’m glad you’re okay Pottymouth. For a few days you were one with the Survivors, I guess.
Second, I am sooooo glad I’m not the only one who is completely confused by what the hell happened at Tribal Council. It thought it was just me, that I blinked and missed something important or something. Why would they reveal their ‘hidden’ immunity idols before the vote? It made no sense. Why would they reveal them at all if they weren’t going to play them? Was it some tactic to get people not to vote for them, knowing it was useless, so that they ultimately wouldn’t have to play them after all? At least for Malcolm. For Abi it made no sense at all. Why was Lisa a deceitful shark one minute and a naive idiot the very next?
Well, at least Jeff is gone. What an ass. He is a perfect example of the maxim that people with money are always the ones who think they never have enough of it. It’s like large amounts of money poisons the brain or something and they become zombies about it. More! More! Jerk.
Looking forward to the full recap.
@Itchy, how is Lisa an \evil bitch\ for playing the cards she was actually dealt? She used information that she gained to secure her alliance with Tandang while smartly trying to secure a second alliance with the older men (Jeff, Skupin, Penner). Pete fucked her over by revealing that he knew Malcolm had an idol, which made absolutely no sense if Pete wanted to keep original Tandang strong, as he claimed. Lisa clearly was trying to start building the case as to why she should win, should she make the Final Two or Three. It’s refreshing to see the \older woman\ of the tribe actually play the game and not be satisfied with being dragged to the end as some pawn the eventual winner uses to win.
I don’t know if anyone listens to Rob Cesternino’s podcast, but he interviews the contestants in their boot order. During R.C.’s interview, she mentioned that Skupin and Lisa actually knew each other outside of the game due to their religious convictions and that Skupin has religious Youtube videos.
As far as Jeff Kent goes, his Obama rant seemed a little off-putting considering the Election was just a couple nights ago. I just wish Survivor would understand that stunt casting only works when said stunt cast member is basically exposed and exploited (it is reality TV, after all). Considering that Jeff should’ve been exposed by Dawson and wasn’t made him boring casting. And, as far as him not wanting the returnees to last longer than him, DUH, you should’ve kept Katie. None of us should feel sorry for the $60 Million Dollar Man.
Just a figure of speech, Derek. This is the role she’s put herself in : sneaky and untrustworthy (and if you truly believe she just innocently decided to GO THROUGH EVERYONE’S BAGS and just “happened” to find Malcolm’s idol, well, I’ve got a bridge here I’m looking to sell…). She couldn’t wait to expose Malcolm’s little secret. Not once, but twice. But I did mean “evil bitch” in a good way, as in, who’d have expected her to be all crafty like that? (At least she hasn’t been spouting off about her insane religious beliefs on the show, thanks Lisa!)
Maybe I’m just still too upset by the loss of RC’s amazing leopard print bikini. I kept expecting that thing to fall off during challenges, seeing ashow it’s basically constructed from dental floss.
this was the most fun i’ve had watching survivor in a long time. i like going into tribal not know what is going to happen. i like lisa (more than i thought i would), and am glad she’s playing the game. i don’t know if she’s playing a good one (like some have mentioned, she’s a bit blabby), but at least she’s making an effort.
i can understand why malcom showed his idol. there was so much talk of him having it, he waved it around and basically told everyone that their votes for him would mean nothing (in case they were still considering blindsiding him), and then he didn’t even have to play it. abi, though, is an idiot. but an entertaining one.
i am totally in love with penner. i loved loved his talk of the ‘plan’ during tribal, just to make sure kent went along with it, only to to vote for abi, making sure kent was the one to go. i love a reality star contestant who can hold a grudge. i remember kent from him baseball playing days, and he was a complete dick, so i was surprised at how much i was enjoying him this season. nice to see he was only pretending, and was in stealth douche mode the whole time.
@Itchy: I feel Lisa was just sincerely trying to air out everyone’s clothes…she’s not THAT good an actress.
And I love that she has not lied to anyone yet. If they call her out on something, she owns up to it.
Also – I’m shipping Penner and Welchel. Notice the body language when they’re close together?
Ah, I didn’t realize it was Penner who voted for Flabby. Good on him!
I love that Penner screwed Jeff! Lisa’s playing a good game, but it’s too much too soon. It’s gonna bite her in the ass just like Jeff’s (idiotic) master plan to evict one of his closest allies (Penner) bit him.
Still love Penner, and I love it when he takes control of the situations like at challenges and during tribal. Must drive Jeff nuts!
And Lisa has really grown on me. I think her strategy was smart, especially after Pete screwed things up.
After attending nearly every tribal council this season, last night Denise was the ONLY one not mentioned as being at risk!
I just know when they get back to camp – Abi is going to throw a fit wanting to know who had the nerve to vote for her? Pete is such a mastermind – not! And I love the fact that Jeff was voted out before Penner. That’s called Karma, you four-fingered handshake giver!
What in the world are you appologizing for?
I am from Fla, Darlin. I knew that you had better things to do then to run to the nearest McDonalds or coffie shop to get on their wifi and tell us what you thought about these stupid Survivor people. I am sure you had bigger fish to fry.
I truly think that they are the dumbest bunch of survivors,yet. That said. Last nights Tribal council was epic and truly entertaining.
About Abi, did you notice how disgusted she looked when they lost the reward challenge? That chick hasn’t hit a lick of the snake the entire time she has been there and she thinks she has the right to be idignant? I hope that when she goes, she thinks she is safe and is holding the immunity idol as her torch is extinguished.. Gosh! That would be so much fun!
I hope things are getting back to normal for you PM. <3
Robin
It’s pretty clear we’re stuck with Flabby Maria to the very end. She’s this season’s Hantz.
Am wondering if Lisa was thinking that since Mal’s idol is pre-merge, he needs to use it and make the playing field level—i.e. Immunity is only gained thru full participation challenges.
Go Denise–love her!!!!!!!! I see Final Four written in the cards for her.
Pete and Abi will hang themselves–it will be a joy to watch.
I lost power half-way thru the episode but will watch it again!!!
I, too, noticed that Denise’s name wasn’t mentioned at TC. And I just loved Penner and watching him in action. I hope Denise and Penner make it to F4. I can’t stand Abi and Pete and was glad to find out that everyone hates them. Wondering if Pete is slapping himself in the head for getting into an alliance with her. What a maroon.
Well, I guess we know how Jeff Kent voted last Tuesday. Double loser!
I worry that Denise has the outlast part of Survivor down, but not so much with the outwit and outplay. Sure, she’s physical, but her strategic game leaves a lot to be desired.
My biggest question about Jeff Kent is how he managed to have what appears to be a pretty good career playing ball, good enough to make a shit ton of money (read somewhere it was actually closer to 80 million), but yet only 1 person knew who he was out of all those people? How much money do the big name players pull down? Crazy.
I seriously would have loved to smack his smug ass face when he sat there bitching about how much he would get after Obama “took” his share. There was a look on his face that told me everything I need to know about him. I’m surprised he was able to keep some of the douchiness hidden on the island, but boy it all came out at the end, didn’t it?
@KJN – Totally agree.!
great ep!
yeah, I dunno what the hell they were doing at the Tribal Counsel. Lisa pretty much blabbed on everyone, forced all the Idols out of the woodwork, so there’s no secrets anymore. One one hand, awesome because there’s no sneaking around….yet, that sucks because there’s no sneaking around.
I am loving Penner. His little dance after winning the Idol was awesome. What does he do for a living? He has a great radio voice. great ep!
Hilarious@ ChaCha – I’m thinking the producers/editors are not such big Jeff Kent fans, the timing on that last statement was too perfect!
This was a great episode. The editors actually did a good job. I was sure it was Penner going home, even with all the buildup during the challenge. They like to do that when someone is leaving, then BAM, switch-a-roo.
Even if you don’t like host Jeff, he was great during this tribal, he let them just talk and talk without a lot of digging. I remember an interview he did a couple of years ago when he mentioned that tribals can some times be a couple of hours but are edited way down. I’m amazed they don’t put longer tribals online, people would watch.
Isn’t Abby going to get some backlash for actually having the Idol? Didn’t she go off on boobs for looking for the idol, having the clue or something like that? And isn’t that one of the big things that got Boob’s voted off?
It was also great that only one person recognized Jeff Kent. I am sure his ego thought everyone would know who he is.
Where did all those black beans come from? I never saw those before. I thought they were all supposed to be starving on a cup of rice a day.
Jeff said it was a missed opportunity . . . what did he mean, anyone?
Glad you’re safe and powered up, Potty!!!
@Juddfan..YES, I forgot to mention that…WTF did Jeff mean by that? Missed opportunity for what? The only thing I can think of is to use/vote out someone with an idol, but that makes no sense. JEFFFFF?!?!
also, @crankyguy yes, the black beans? although I did enjoy seeing Ave with black-bean stained teeth.
Yes…it’s just so obnoxious for people to want to keep their own money instead of turning over a huge percentage to the government. I’m sure you would have hated those founding fathers…the ones who moved to separate from England for the very same reason.
I, too, disliked Jeff. But on the tax issue, I agree.
@cattyfan, I saw just today that one of Obama’s first orders of business is to encourage congress to ratchet up taxes on “the rich.” And Jeff thought he would get to keep even $600,ooo if he won . . . silly man.
@juddfan,
This is what Jeff said that he meant by “missed opportunity”
“EW: After the vote you said, “That vote may go down as one of the biggest blown opportunities in the history of this game.” Obviously, you know how it plays out, but at the time, did you think it was a blown opportunity, and if so, by whom?
PROBST: The blown opportunity was Penner and his lack of commitment to his alliance. For a guy on the outside of a true alliance, he had a shot to firm it up with Jeff Kent and take control of the game. I thought they blew it. Granted my comment only pertains to that moment, but in a game of numbers that was a big blown opportunity. The question is — did Penner miscalculate? Or… does he have another plan in store.”
~~~
Pfft..Lack of commitment is the biggest blown opportunity in the history of the game? C’mon, He should just admit that he was just trying to end the TC as if he knew what the hell he was talking about because he was as just as confused as the rest of us.
TC, Robin
PS,
When I say “the rest of us”, I mean those of us that were confused and not the general population of TVG.
Tsk tsk, people. The colonists fought against taxation without representation. No one can argue that the wealthy are unrepresented in today’s America. In fact, they’ve rigged the entire tax system to their benefit. And, be honest, there are very very few non-millionnaires in the Senate and Congress.
What is fair is that the more you gain from society, the more you should be expected to contribute back to that society. That is the truest form of ‘representation’ that exists.
Thankfully, there are plenty of douchebags and soulless elitists like Jeff Kent (to bring this back to Survivor) and Mitt Romney to remind us that the American Revolution is not yet done.
Probst was referring to Penner breaking from the alliance he himself had only just created. But Probst missed the point. Penner was sticking it to Kent — payback for being a deceitful and untrustworthy scumbag. Penner’s no fool. Also, he was letting Flabby Maria know she’s a target — and no doubt at the same time seeking to stir up the hornet’s nest that is her brain.
As for Denise — somehow she (like Malcolm) has managed to go from an obvious target to being an overlooked member of an increasingly solid alliance. I call that some pretty damn good strategic gameplay.
RC appears to be such a dimwit that it no doubt did not even register with her that Flabby Maria had gone ahead and found the idol without telling her. Shame.
Well, I still have Parvati.
@Robin…..thanks for the link!! Yeah, Jeff has no idea what he’s talking about.
Jeff’s tryin’ to be Miss Cleo…..just go back to your fancy hotel while these people duke it out “Lord of the Flies” style.
@Itchy…THANK YOU for your assesment on taxation with representation. good post!
Re the black beans etc., it appears that these survivors are surviving quite nicely compared to the early series when weight loss and deprivation was apparent (ie Australia!), supported by the fact the RC lost only 5 lbs!!!
Ponderosa clip shows RC saying she gained 10lbs in readiness for the show – must suck to only have lost 5 of it!
Expecting people to contribute and forcing them to by taking their money are two very different things.
Mitt Romney has given millions of his own earned money to charities…without being told by the government that he had to. It’s sad to me that so many liberals won’t give unless they are forced to…and then they wait for the government to decide how to disperse that money unless of choosing worthy causes on their own.
“What is fair is that the more you gain from society, the more you should be expected to contribute back to that society.”
I don’t know how much Jeff Kent contributes, but I don’t know how anybody can say Romney doesn’t contribute. Romney and somebody like Al Gore are under the same tax system. Want to compare what Mitt Romney contributes privately verses what the Al Gores and Obamas of the world contribute? It looks to me, Itchy, that you not only want to rid the world of all religion, but to have all rich people (in the United States, anyway) taxed into ex-rich people. Rich people pay plenty now, before any plans that Obama has for them go into effect, so instead to cursing them, maybe we ought to thank them.
Weren’t taxes during the American Revolutionary Period a lot less than they are now, even if they were “without representation”? There were many arrogant bureaucratic abuses of power coming from the crown that angered the revolutionaries as much as anything, and as our own federal government gets bigger and bigger with more and more agencies with their associated “czars” and minions, we can expect more and more of that.
I seem to have strayed off topic, so . . . SURVIVOR!!!
No one’s forcing anyone. If you really don’t want to stay in the States, leave. But if you want to stay in a country AND you want to benefit from everything that country provides (including the possibility that you can get wealthy), then suck it up and pay your fair share.
It gets a bit tiring listening to wealthy profiteers like Romney and Trump et al whine about paying their fair share. It’s perplexing when people of far more limited means support them.
Charity is an entirely inefficient system. It doesn’t build roads, doesn’t improve the electrical infrastructure, doesn’t ensure that every child has a fair shot at a decent education. It doesn’t provide funding for less glamorous causes. And charity requires larger resources, draining away proportionally more revenues than government ever will.
As for Romney’s charitable contributions — much of this is not his own will — he gives to charity because the Mormon church forces him to, and nearly all of what he gives goes directly to Mormon interests. Other parts of his tax contributions were made for the sole purpose of lowering his tax burden (while conveniently fulfilling his required tithe to his church — which leeches off society with its tax-free status even while interfering in political issues).
The whole point of living in a democracy is that we are all working together to develop a better society that’s fair and just for everyone (note: I don’t say equal, just fair and just). Paying taxes and electing officials presumably responsible enough to make the appropriate choices as to where those taxes need to be sent is part of the democratic process.
So again, if people seriously do not want to pay taxes, they should leave. No one is forcing them to stay. But if they wish to take advantage of the opportunities available in the US, then yes, paying taxes is part of the deal.
“So again, if people seriously do not want to pay taxes, they should leave.”
*SURVIVOR*
I see — let leftists raise taxes to whatever level they deem is appropriate for the “common good” and don’t even open your mouth about it or you can just get out. Only lefties are welcome in the United States. I could just as easily tell you that if you don’t think taxes are high enough here, then move to where they are higher. Okay, you did do that, but I’ll bet that you had other more compelling reasons. Then, I could tell you to just write the Treasury Department an extra check. I wish I could tell Warren Buffett that: “Shut up about wishing the government would tax you more and just WRITE THE FUCKIN’ CHECK!”
*SURVIVOR*
What you and I can’t agree on is that the rich are already paying more than their fair share.
*SURVIVOR*
By the way, who is forcing Romney to be a Mormon? Is it like the mafia, as in easy to get in but hard to get out?
crankyguy…I love being on the same side of an argument with you.
@cattyfan, I’ll hold itchy down (I may need some extra help with that as he might be a spry one) and you put the hot sauce on his tongue. One treatment and he’ll be votin’ Republican.
I’m soooooooooooo with Itchy on this one.
Besides, wasn’t there some hoopla about Romney not releasing his tax forms? And keeping money in offshore accounts to avoid taxes? Yep, sounds not at all shady. He insulted ’47%’ of the population and gained less than 47% of the electoral vote. Ha!
I find it interesting that people are okay with the majority of is being taxed a third of our income but when it comes to the rich then the same percentage shouldn’t apply? \It’s not fair…their 33% is so much!\ Well, so is the 66% they have remaining after taxes. That’s the beauty of percentages, it’s all relative.
Why sarcasatire, based on our Honey Boo Boo exchanges, I would never have guessed that you are not a Republican. I’m sure the IRS (in an Obama administration, mind you) has looked over Romney’s tax forms with a fine tooth comb, so there is really no reason for Romney to show them to you and Harry Reid and all the people out in TV land who watch SURVIVOR.
And why do you think that the “47 percent” pay the same percentage as the rich? The rich already pay a higher percentage on taxable earned income. I would be in favor of a flat tax, where everybody, rich or poor (including everybody who has ever played SURVIVOR), pays exactly the same percentage, but that’s never gonna happen.
Romney said the 47% that he was talking about would never vote for him and how that was a huge obstacle in the way of him being elected. He was absolutely right. Why are you criticizing a guy for being right?
Obama ALSO has money off shore. It’s part of the general investments made by the money held for their retirement funds. Oh…and Obama’s payments after he retires will be bigger than Romney’s…but I don’t hear any complaints about that.
Romney released years worth of tax returns…but apparently some people aren’t satisfied with that. How far back did you want him to go?
And what is this rancor toward people who EARN money? I am sick of people who feel entitled to money and items they didn’t work for. A flat tax does seem to be a good proposal.
Where’s that hot sauce….
@ Itchy… I’m with you.
There’s a huge difference between donating money to pivate charities (for their cause), and paying a fair share of taxes that will go towards public improvements and necessities for an entire society (such as infrastructure, education, public safety, etc).
Totally not the same thing.
Back to Survivor…..so what about that immunity challenge, huh? Huh? Anyone? Ahem, is this thing on? Bueller?
Romney released two years of abbreviated returns. The presidential standard (set by his father) is 10 years.
No one has suggested people shouldn’t be rich — that’s just Fox News propaganda spinning your head. What is being asked is that the wealthy pay a fair share — and yes, that means a larger share, not the 13 percent Romney and his ilk get away with — of their earnings. This is how it used to be — back in the days when the United States was an industrial powerhouse and the standard of living was constantly rising and the envy of the world.
And frankly, even without the economic argument, the Republican party’s outlandish intrusion into people’s personal lives is enough to make me wonder why anyone can support them these days. I’m not saying you should vote for Obama (I didn’t this time). But how anyone can seriously support loonies like Ryan, Bachman, Rove, Mourdoch, Akin, Palin etc. is beyond me. Time for a new political party?
But yeah, back to Survivor. Jeff Kent’s a pussy.
itchy…I thought you lived in another country, so I’m not surprised you didn’t vote for Obama. And from my persepctive, Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are the loonies.
And as for standards set for presidents and candidates, they have traditionally released college transcripts and writings as well as medical information…neither of which Obama did. But you seem eager to overlook that along with his many shortcomings.
You prefer your propaganda from MSNBC? I probably watch more CNN than Fox, although I do watch Bill O’Reilly on occasion. I should point out that I also watch every episode of SURVIVOR. O’Reilly is clearly not a liberal, but he does have people on who support the liberal point of view. Fox has more liberals as guests and on staff than any of the non-Fox networks have conservatives.
I would love to see how Romney only pays 13% of his earnings in taxes. If he is doing that illegally, then Democrats should nail him or quit demagoguing it. If he consistently only pays 13%, then rich Democrats are doing it too. Did you cherry pick one year in which he has carried foward previous years’ losses to come up with that percentage? Everybody with money takes all the legal deductions and credits that they are allowed to take and that includes Warren \Please Tax Me More\ Buffett. Tax avoidance is perfectly legal whereas tax evasion is not, but all the chatter from the left tries to paint Romney as a tax evader. I don’t see a problem with closing certain loopholes, but this constant refrain of \tax the rich\ is just to take the focus off the real problem which is the government spends too much damn money. SURVIVOR, on the other hand, should probably spend a bit more on production. The Republicans tend to spend just a wee bit less than the Democrats, which is why I generally favor their candidates.
Back in the days before SURVIVOR was on the air, and when the United States was an industrial powerhouse and the standard of living was constantly rising and the envy of the world had much to do with an abundant supply of very cheap energy and a capitalist economic system with many fewer government regulations and nothing to do with high taxes.
But, we can both agree that celebrity SURVIVOR contestant Jeff Kent is an asshole, and still disagree that he is an asshole who is taxed too much.
Somehow, my double quote marks got turned into back slashes on that last post.
Itchy: You rock! Made every point I was ready to make. Sanity – ah, yes. Sanity prevails.
Itchy, I could just kick myself in the ass. I TOTALLY forgot the NUMBER ONE reason that “the United States was an industrial powerhouse and the standard of living was constantly rising and the envy of the world” and probably the ONLY actual reason: The blessing of the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob upon his recently founded Christian nation. Now, that’s something that I KNOW we can agree upon!
Just to clarify something… those who live in the Unites States do not live in a true democracy, we live in a republic. In a democracy we would have more say in the on-going matters of the government, instead we elect jackasses that represent us, and make decisions on our behalf. I’m neither a republican nor a democrat, but all this talk of Romney’s faults, and that of rich not paying enough taxes is a bunch of bull. If I remember right, this country was built on the ideals of Capitalism, not Socialism. If you want to live in a socialist society, then move to Canada or another nation that works on those ideologies. What made this country great was that everyone has the chance to become a \Romney\ or \Buffet\… that was the one of the things that brought my parents and a whole slew of other immigrants to this country… the Chance to live the true American Dream. They worked their asses off to get somewhere in their lives and provide for their families and the more they earned, the more they were taxed for their earnings. This doesn’t mean that they didn’t aide those who were less fortunate, but that was their prerogative, not a mandate. And while people say Romney donated because he was a Mormon and to those causes close to his church, that doesn’t mean those organizations didn’t assist those who desperately needed it. Who is to say one cause is more deserving than another?
What I do know is that this forum is about Survivor, and I can’t remember what I was going to post about the show… damnit!
I waited all this time for the election to be over so I could go back to normal life, but alas I was wrong.
Is it time for a Lisi faceplant?
@cattyfan, You do know that an American living overseas can still vote, right? Yes, that includes Itchy.
I would love to discuss this further but I think everyone else would prefer to discuss Abi McCrazypants. Besides, we have the next four years to listen to the grumblings of Republicans. But at least binders full of women get to maintain control of their uteri!
Control of their uteri should include paying for their own birth control.
And, yes, I know Americans overseas can still vote. I have always been under the impression he established himself as a resident elsewhere. My mistake.
Oh…and I’m not a grumbling republican. I’m a grumbling Independent who is sick of whining liberals.
Control of OUR uteri means pro-choice, which was further up on the Republican agenda… or do female Republicans like to overlook that fact (even in cases of rape)?
This dude is having a love affair with himself. So obnoxious.
http://blogs.wsj.com/dailyfix/2012/11/08/jeff-kent-survivor-should-be-harder/
@insanehousewife: Just to set the record straight – As a very proud Canadian, I want to inform you that Canada is as much a democracy as the USA is – we may have socialized medicine but we also have elections where we vote in our local, provincial and federal politicians. Now, that is all I am going to say about politics because this forum is about Survivor…
Which, as mentioned previously, had a fantastic tribal council and was possibly the best show since I can remember! I am hoping that the focus of the group shifts from getting out Penner next week to someone I would love to see leave – how about Abi, Pete or Artis?
P.S. And at the risk of starting another firestorm of comments, we also allow same-sex marriages!
I have a bee in my bonnet about this food situation. Beans and rice? Hell, that’s sometimes a Sunday supper in my house and everyone looks forward to it! How is that roughing it? We got Chinese take out last Weds and those folks were eating better than us. And I love my Chinese take out place.
They have got to quit feeding these people. Or stop calling it Survivor. Just call it Big Brother on an Island.
I remember the rats…I liked it when they ate rats….
@Pikey: Same-sex marriages? Socialized medicine? Legalized abortion? Canada, what are you…Europe? /sarcasm
Seems most “first world” countries have all of the above and it’s no longer up for debate come every election…it’s a way of life!
Jeff Kent may have been deeply offended that no one else recognized him so he could humblebrag about his success. He left angry that they saw him as just anoher Joe Schmo and booted him anyways. Ha! *high fives Obama*
Pikey, just want to clarify that my sarcasm wasn’t directed at you in a “duh” way…but in a “of course Canada does, and other countries do, too!” (and so should the US of A..)
I’m sure all political parties agree we should lave Abi-Maria on that island, amirite? And send Colton there, as well? I bet we wouldn’t even have to vote on it.. let’s do it!
Who is Colton?
Short-term memory on the fritz? Colton …the only Survivor whose guts hated him. Last season’s Flabby Maria, except he used the idol to his advantage. Abi’s idol is getting flushed out like a porn star after a gang bang. Can’t wait!
Wanna see a Pete vs Malcolm showdown.
Then Denise vs Lisa.
No. No problem with my memory. I remember him. I just assumed we were discussing this season of Survivor, not last season, and thought perhaps you had coined a nickname for a contestant that you thought deserved the moniker of Colton.
Robin
Ha, yes, I’m glad this election’s over too. Can’t remember a more bitter, poisoned atmospher than what we have now. I hope the country can heal itself, but frankly, it’s not looking likely.
I promise this will be my last thoughts on the subject. No name-callin’. Promise!
European-style socialism is clearly the way of the future — it’s the only system (for now) that has been able to balance the needs of the few (i.e., the wealthy and those aspiring to be wealthy) and the rights of the majority to have certain basic needs — food, shelter, health — met.
No one over here is blocked from becoming wealthy. In the meantime, no one has to worry about going bankrupt if someone in their family becomes ill. Families do not have to worry about being forced to live in the streets. They know their children will receive a free, decent education and have a fair shot of getting into the university of their choice (also free). And they know they not only won’t starve to death but that they do not have to beg for any of this (the flipside of charity is that it turns people into beggars). (And being on welfare over here still sucks — people get the bare minimum, it’s a subsistence living.)
Like I said, this type of political system, or something similar, is clearly the way to the future. Don’t forget, in America, civil rights didn’t happen until the early 1960s — hard to believe now, right? Gay rights are still in process. So-called “conservatism” (which is really an attempt to recreate parts of the feudal system) is on its last legs. Soon enough, it’ll be another relic of the past, like flat-earth theory.
After THAT, cranky guy, we’ll get to religion
Socialism is the repeatedly failed way of the past. Read your history books.
sarcasatire…I said “their” because my reproductive abilities were decided a long time ago…by God. Children for me mean a death sentence, so I took responsibility for making sure I never had to make a choice between me and a child. I didn’t look for someone else to cover me.
In case you missed it, I am not a republican, but I can understand being consistent in a view: if you believe abortion is killing a child, why would you support it in any instance? Perhaps if we want to continue the politics, we should start a thread in the forum section.
So…back to Survivor. There are still several players we nearly never hear from. Artis…Spicolli…and I think there’s one other. Is is safer to take them to the end, or to choosse someone who is actually offensive like Flabby Maria?
I make my living as an historian. So there’s that
I think we never hear from Artis because he’s one nasty piece of work — can’t remember ever hearing him say anything positive about anyone or anything this season. And that earring!
Artis does seem to have a serious case of Perma-sneer.
I make my living as an historian. So there’s that
That is not quite accurate. You must make your living as a very left-wing historian. So there’s that. I have a next-door neighbor at my primary residence who is a university history professor nearing retirement. He LOVES Obama except that he thinks Obama is a little too conservative for his taste. There is always a fly in the ointment, isn’t there?
How did Maria get to be called Flabby Maria? Is it because of the enormous Brazilian bunda? Clearly, I am missing something here.
Complaint: I had to click through the same fuckin’ advertisement for Dish about ten times on the Solve Media box before it would give me my pass code.
“After THAT, cranky guy, we’ll get to religion.”
I think we might both get banned.
Ah, only three click-throughs this time. Bitchin’ totally works.
The ads actually also contain a passcode to type. (Those ads may be annoying, but they help pay for this wonderful site.)
Definitely the best episode in a long, long time. This season has been pretty incredible. I’ve enjoyed every episode and every cast member has brought something new and interesting to the table before their boot. Jeff Kent is an asshole, but he was a good antagonist to root against and he didn’t overstay his welcome.
If Carter, Artis, Pete and Abi-Maria bite the dust next (preferably in that order), we’ll have a really interesting and compelling final five.
@cattyfan, I have heard it said that the only reason for the invention of television was to sell us stuff. Is that why Al Gore invented the internet? Anyway, ten clicks to get the pass code? Is that a glitch or a feature?
ooooh Cranky….you just had to turn the knife with “my primary residence” – haha.
@moonshine, I wanted to take that out as soon as it was too late. It does sound a little la dee da if that is what you mean. My secondary residence is not a huge house in the Hamptons, but rather a very humble abode in the woods. And I actually spend more time in the woods, but my “official” address is next to the lefty history professor. I’m like Uriah Heep . . . very ‘umble.
I want ITCHY to run for president in 2024.
(Hillary has my vote in 2016 and 2020).
Actually, I specialize in economic and business history. And apparently some of my work is used as teaching aides at Harvard Business School, that bastion of leftist economic theory.
But I get bored with all this “leftist” and “liberal” labeling nonsense. I’m a pragmatist, pure and simple.
Mr. D: I’d much rather go on Survivor! But if the people insist, then yes, I’ll run for president. But do I HAVE to come back to the States for that? Life really is much better over here.
I think your point about your work not being leftist would be more convincing if it was used at, say, Brigham Young University, or better yet, at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.
Sorry that you are bored by my inappropriate labels, but since every opinion that you have stated here with respect to taxation, religion, economics, and politics is left of center, I really didn’t think you would mind being called a leftist. Maybe those positions are considered centrist in France? So, if I understand you correctly and can extrapolate from that, Obama is not the most liberal president in the history of the United States; he is simply pragmatic.
“but since every opinion that you have stated here with respect to taxation, religion, economics, and politics is left of center, I really didn’t think you would mind being called a leftist.”
Well, cattyfan’s comments are right of center and she has taken issue with “whiny liberals” yet frowns upon being called a republican. So, does that make her a conservative independent?
Maybe we don’t all have to claim a “set” or label ourselves.. I vote for the policies that appeal to benefit the people on a broader level. For rights that i believe in. I believe gays should be allowed to marry, and be allowed to be open about their sexuality while in the military. I believe that a woman should decide whether or not she wants to continue/terminate her own pregnancy, and that those same women should be paid wages equal to men for doing the same job. These are CIVIL rights.. everything else be damned. Any political party that want to deny its citizens these basic rights is one I will never vote for, regardless of the lower taxes they promise me.
Yes, I am an independent who is conservative on some issues…but who has voted for democrats on quite a number of occasions. I’m discerning enough to look at a whole candidate and how they will affect the country, not just one or two social issues.
Yea.. I hope we could all be discerning enough to consider how one or two social issues could affect millions of Americans even if we don’t count ourselves among that particular group.
@sarcasatire, maybe you and itchy have some aversion to being labeled “leftist” for whatever reason, but I think it’s a perfectly valid description. The last election showed that the left is where it’s at, so you should embrace the label, in my opinion. So, we disagree about something else! Imagine that.
I’m not sure where you read that I was opposed to being labled “leftist”, crankyguy. I merely pointed out someone (cattyfan) who sided with your views but didn’t want to be labeled right-wing or republican, as you probably label yourself…all to illustrate that Itchy’s sentiments against labeling happen on both sides.
One thing we do agree on, is that winning by 3 million votes (popular) and over 100 votes (electoral college) it’s been made clear..the left is where its at.
aaaarrrgggghhhh! HOT SAUCE!
*runs forward with a taco*
You don’t have to be identify as a Republican to be annoyed by whiny liberals.
Welp, these days, the liberals are celebrating. The bulk of the whining I hear seems to be coming from somewhere to my right.
Anywhoodle….three more to go!!
This just in: First Survivor Winner Richard Hatch Jailed For Winning A Million Dollars And Not Giving Obama His Share
“Welp, these days, the liberals are celebrating. The bulk of the whining I hear seems to be coming from somewhere to my right.”
It’s nowhere NEAR the whining that would be heard from the left, including accusations that the election was stolen, if Romney had won. You know it’s true.
We are doing so well! TVGasm Tribe is a true competitor in a group of 200+.
The first week we were #101 in the standings. As of week 8 we are #28!
Week _Standing
1- #101
2 – #56
3 – #58
4- #65
5- #44
6- #39
7- #36
8- #28
HOT SAUCE! HOT SAUCE on the tongues of the wicked!
Well…crankyguy, you can say anything at this point but we’ll never know would we? It’s all conjecture. But let’s go with fact..who’s whining the loudest now? I mean, the sheer amount of racist tweets and assassination status updates were so astounding that the secret service had to get involved. There’s whining…and then there’s whining.
Here’s even a map where a site illustrated where the most offensive, vulgar tweets came from? Notice anything…like a pattern, perhaps? (Mostly the states that voted Republican. surprise, surprise)
http://mashable.com/2012/11/11/racist-tweets/
Anyway…anyone on the losing side would be whining. So those annoyed by whining liberals, rest assured, they should be quiet for now.
Those annoyed by whiny conservatives, grin and bear it!
Congrats on 100 on a minicap, Pottymouth!!
Thank you, Jerky Jeff Kent, crankyguy, and American politics for helping us get there!
ITCHY For PRESIDENT, 2024!
Rice and beans for the rich and the poor!
(yes, it rhymes)
I would like to thank my core alliance of Cranky Guy and cattyfan in our quest to drive this comment thread above the magical #100 mark. Who would ever have thought people from such different walks of life could band together for such a noble cause?
America truly is a great nation.
To be honest, I only kept Cranky Guy around ’cause I knew no one would vote for him. I took a risk with cattyfan, since I had to worry she’d pick up the kitten votes.
“Well…crankyguy, you can say anything at this point but we’ll never know would we? It’s all conjecture. ”
Yes, but it’s conjecture based on experience. I remember lots and lots of whining about chimpybushitler being president. And a lots and lots of sheer hate and vulgarity and death wishes. And I heard it even in my everyday life among rank and file Democrats to a far greater extent than I hear complaints about Obama. Republicans that I talk to think Obama is a disaster, and some even think that it’s the beginning of the end, but I have never heard the kind of thing that you refer to, although I am not questioning its existence on the internet.
Actually on election day Howard Dean had already laid the groundwork, claiming the only way Obama would lose is if the election was “stolen.” It was like pre-emptive whining. Far Lefties just can’t help themselves.
Look at how the left whines about little ol’
FoxFaux News. They have ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, BBC, MSNBC, and the vast majority of the major print media in the bag, and they will not shut up about the mere existence of Fox News, which if they had any intention of being honest, would have to admit is no more unbalanced than the networks that they approve of. They hate Fox News simply because it does not blatantly favor Democrats in its news coverage and employs commentators on prime time opinion shows who dare to actively disagree with Democrats.Crankyguy, I said the same thing in defense of BET.
@sarcasatire, I don’t know, so you’ll have to tell me. Are there any white people on BET? If there are, then we have pretty much the same argument, because Fox News employs liberals and has them express their views on air. But if BET is pure black, then we don’t, since there are not any white-only TV networks.
@sarcasatire, I’ve reconsidered. We don’t have the same argument. Pretty nearly 100% of the left resent the existence of Fox News while only some very small percentage of whites resent the existence of BET.
I’ve been away from my computer all weekend and imagine how excited I was to check out the Survivor recap and it was over 100 comments, only to realize that it was hi-jacked into a political discussion.
Random thoughts: I agree with whomever said they should call it “Big Brother on and Island”. I guess gone are the days where the contestants had to scavenge for food (i.e. picking tapioca, eating rats, risking life to save the rice.) And what was she thinking pulling out the Immunity Idol and showing everyone and kudos to Malcolm for calling their bluff and not playing his.
I think Jeff Kent was trying to be funny. To him, winning the million wasn’t the goal as he has enough money. Just being named survivor was. And since it was his crack that started the political shitstorm I have a thought on that also. What surprised me most about the discussion was that someone I would have thought was a flaming liberal actually seems to be rather conservative. On another posting anyone who said anything bad about President Obama was chastised by this person, reminded that it was a snark site, and told to go post on CNN.
Wow . . . I had no idea such a storm stirred up in here! Thanks Robin, for answering my ?
I was going to weigh in, but heck, I’ll vote Itchy too!!! I agree with him and Sacra, my grrrl!!!!, like anyone cares . . .
Ok, just one, 13% in taxes should be 15%, but wasn’t for Romney because of off shore accounts. I think, if your entire income is from profits, and you don’t even work . . . sigh . . . paying more than 13, or 15% does not seem too much to ask, esp. when the rest of us are coughing up 33% or more. Republicans are always saying they should “get rid” of capital gain taxes . . . um, yeah, so Romney and his ilk pay no taxes . . . is it me!?
Perhaps I am more socialistic, but I prefer to think we should be more civilized and less cruel!
For the click ad below, just use the arrow to advance to the next version. Eventually, you’ll get one with a code and no click.
Heh heh, Mimo, we were just “unskewing” the comment thread. Because obviously a Survivor recap should have more comments than a Toddlers n’ Tiaras recap, right?
Also, just for a bit of perspective, watch this video: http://youtu.be/oiSwnWw65Wo
Betcha even crankyguy’ll laugh.
We should be more civilized and less cruel . . . therefore, tax the rich? And no, it’s not just you; it’s every lefty I have ever met. Look, it’s really simple: if you tax the shit out of capital gains, then that is a disincentive for people to invest capital. Why risk losing all your money on an investment, when on the chance that it pays off, the government comes in and takes back most of the gain? So, yeah, capital gain taxes should be low for Romney and his ilk, and rich Democrats and their ilk, and even for you and me. Spread the love people! Low capital gain taxes for all God’s children who should be paying tithe on those capital gains, so there goes another 10% off the top before taxes.
The main recap is up and I’m not gonna mention lefties or Obama or taxes over there. I know my place.
“European-style socialism is clearly the way of the future — it’s the only system (for now) that has been able to balance the needs of the few (i.e., the wealthy and those aspiring to be wealthy) and the rights of the majority to have certain basic needs — food, shelter, health — met.”
God I needed that laugh. Thank you. Which bankrupted European country should would be following? Greece? Spain? How about Germany with its negative population growth?
Hey Juddfan! Love ya!!
Cranky, I wasn’t being literal…just poking a little fun and trying to lighten the mood.
It is waaaaaaay against my better judgment to post this comment and I know I’ll pay for it dearly, but the tax thing always irks me, especially to throw in the not working part. How is a rich person not working and paying less taxes any different than a poor person not working and living off the government dole? I used to be the United Way liaison for my company and I can’t tell you how many times parents would stroll in in their freshly-rimmed Caddies, with their hairs and nails did, texting on their iPhones, all the while extending their hands for free lunches for their kids. I was gainfully employed and couldn’t afford half the things these people supposedly could – and I didn’t attempt to!
I consider myself socially liberal and fiscally conservative so I don’t agree with everything Mitt Romney says or does. Hardly, in fact. But while I am aware there are exceptions to every rule, a lot of wealthy people worked their asses off before enjoying the perks.
Well, I guess it’s time to head over to the real cap. I do know how to agree to disagree . . . I’ll leave it at that.
; )
Much love all of ya, no matter where we stand on the spectrum of left and right . . . it’s all good!
Hmm. I’ve just been doing a lot of research and writing about Greece. Socialism didn’t cause their debt crisis — the former conservative government did, by taking on massive debts in the form of Euro-backed bonds used to shore up their political support, then hiring Goldman Sachs and other accounting firms to cover up the corruption — and the country’s debt. But other than the conservative government’s corrupt manipulation of the country’s social welfare system for their own political gain, Greece’s problems have nothing to do with socialist policies.
Spain’s difficulty is much different. Its problems come from the collapse of the building sector at the start of the beginning of the Great Recession, after years of rampant overbuilding and real estate speculation. When the building bubble burst, it took down the entire economy with it. Again, the country’s social welfare system has nothing to do with the country’s economic problems.
Of course, the wealthy in both Greece and Spain are doing reasonably well. In case you were worried for them. It’s everyone else who are suffering.
As for Germany, they remain one of the world’s most stable and most productive economies, and their population benefits from one of the world’s strongest social welfare systems, including excellent health care and educational systems. I’m not sure why they’re not fucking more and producing more babies, but I highly doubt it has anything to do with socialism.
Still laughing?
Yes I am laughing very very hard.
More like a nervous giggle. Sounds like Itchy knows his stuff. Consisting all of the European countries that provide universal healthcare, free to low cost universities, and welfare for the poor, can we only name two who aren’t doing well? And admit that the social programs aren’t the reason the country is in a recession? From Canada to Denmark, to Australia…three continents, same system, and it’s been working for decades. If we can’t make it work here in the US, what does that say about us?
My captcha says Rollover.
@itchy
I’m coming late to this thread but I had to comment on a few of your statements. I think the left is just as bad about the \outlandish intrusion into people’s personal lives\. They may leave my uterus alone but god forbid I want a large soda. Also, about Greece, I think that most Americans only know how the workers wouldn’t back down on their pensions. Even though it would bankrupt the country. My fear is that once govt. grows it will never willingly return to a smaller govt. That is not a good thing. i don’t think the govt. does such a bang up job in any arena.
I was in Paris a few months ago and was surprised at all the homeless sleeping on the street and the beggars on the Champs D’Elysee.
I also think Jeff is an asshole but those are usually the fun ones to watch. Ok, my first captcha code was ” live free” lol
I think it says we’re uncivilized . . . as stated, but I must be the worst of the liberals here, seriously, I think everything is so jacked in society. I hate that “the poor” want to be like “the rich” and the rich are out there trying to top each other with ridiculous luxury items . . . I can’t help but think, esp after a disaster like Sandy, that none of that shit means anything, esp when it comes to survival. You can’t eat your rolex, and you can’t live in your bentley (all right, maybe you could-but they do cost the same as a small home)
You can wipe your butt with $20′s though, so always keep a few on hand.
In my family, I have a very poor brother, mainly due to his strange need to “not work for the man”. We’ve bailed him out many times as a family, but he just continues to live in failure, and not really have many qualms about charity. I realized that I am blessed, because I had to get a new toilet seat for my mother, and I got her one of those soft ones that only last a little while. I said, “Well, they’re only fifteen bucks.” not realizing that they don’t have two bucks for gas . . . I guess it’s just perspective, and I surely can’t excuse him for being the way he is . . . which is a little crazy . . . and I don’t think, no matter what he did, he would ever be rich . . .
Well, I’ve been paying into social security since I was 16. I’ll be pretty upset when they try to take that away from me too. Greece should never have been allowed into the Eurozone, that’s all. They weren’t ready for it — culturally or financially. But it’s too late now. They’re the Mississippi of Europe. Literally.
The soda thing comes from Bloomberg, who’s nominally an independent but ideologically more of a Republican. And it’s a needle in a haystack, considering they’re doing nothing against Starbucks, MacDonald’s, Taco Bell, et al.
Still, he’s right — obesity and its complications are going to bankrupt the country pretty soon. It’s already destroying our productivity. No one (well, no sane person) argues with tobacco regulation anymore. It’ll be like that with junk food in another 20 years.
As for France’s growing homeless problem: that’s the direct result of five years of conservative government, which drastically reduced spending on social programs and education while reducing taxes on corporations (which went ahead and shifted their manufacturing overseas anyway).
But the reality is, all governments are now being held hostage by the global financial community, and especially the credit rating agencies, whose economic policies are entirely self-serving.
“The soda thing comes from Bloomberg, who’s nominally an independent but ideologically more of a Republican.”
I’m not a Bloomberg expert, but I believe the reason Democrats always claim that he is really a Republican when it does something stupid is that he ran for office once on the Republican ticket simply as a matter of expediency. That one incident gives them the hook they need to make that claim. No ideological Republican would support a left-wing Democrat with socialist leanings for president — ever, let alone tell some company what size cups of soda they can sell.
I’m noticing a trend with you. See a problem? Well, let me tell you about that! Conservatives. It’s because of those damn conservatives.
Bloomberg ran as a Republican. This is fact.
The Greek government that bankrupted that country was a conservative government. This is fact.
The French government that attempted to strip away the country’s social welfare infrastructure was a conservative government. This too is fact.
The unprecedented shift in wealth in American over the last 30 years came under largely conservative-dominated economic policy. Once again: fact.
So. See the trend?
And if you seriously consider Obama a socialist, then you have no idea whatsoever what socialism means. In which case, all further discussion with you is fruitless.
Bloomberg ACTS like a Democrat. This is fact. He ran as a Republican only because he could not expect to get on the final ballot as a Democrat. This can only be disputed by those whose agenda is served by painting him as a Republican.
The are other valid, perhaps more valid than yours, reasons for the Greek government’s current troubles than conservatives are the direct cause.
Are you saying that there were no homeless in France before conservatives got in office? As you surely know, in the United States, the only time the media does a lot of stories about
‘the homeless problem” is during Republican administrations.
Fact: capitalism, that economic system that built America’s wealth in the first place, is looked upon with much greater favor by conservatives than by progressives who think that wealth should be distributed rather than earned.
I said, and you can go back and look for yourself, that Obama has socialist leanings. Are you really disputing that? Really? The same guy who was adulatory about “European-style socialism is clearly the way of the future . . . “? If so, then you are clearly just like my historian neighbor who thinks Obama is the best president of the last half-century and the only thing wrong with him is that he is not left-wing enough.
@crankyguy, saying someone ACTS like anything is actually an opinion.
@Derek Hazelton, I dunno about that. Ever heard of walking like a duck and quaking like a duck? Supporting Obama is, at the same time, acting like a Democrat and not acting like a Republican. If you ever met a Republican who is in favor of telling McDonald’s what size sodas they can and can’t sell, please let me know.
Okay, have it your way: Bloomberg ACTS like a Democrat. That is highly suggestive that he is not a Republican.
*quacking like a duck* Do ducks ever quake?
But the perception of things is based on a person’s experience and since everyone’s experience is unique, how I perceive an action and how you perceive an action can be quite different. My only point is that it’s not accurate to conflate opinions and facts, even though this a reality-tv blog.
What if I had been telling you for months that I am a vegan, and you catch me some evening devouring a big, medium-rare porterhouse at a Morton’s? You screech, “Crankyguy! That is NOT the way a vegan ACTS!!!” I simply reply, “Mr. Hazelton, I will thank you to keep your specious opinions to yourself.”
