MiniCap: Survivor

It was another good one last night, Gasmi.  The perfect appetizer to a day of feasting.  This is going to be a quickie minicap because I gotta get back to the kitchen!  So let’s jump in…

Pete and Scabby know they’re fucked but one of them is not going down without making life for everyone around them as miserable as possible.

Hmmmmmmm…..wonder who?

The other six talk about just getting the terrible two out first and then Game On at the final six.  Well, they talk about it.  Some people want to stick to that plan, others want to get a final four deal in place sooner rather than later.

The reward challenge ends up being the old folks vs. the young uns.  One guess who wins.

Interestingly they winners agree to put aside the game for the day and just enjoy their reward – a spa day, complete with bath, massage, and lots and lots of food of course!  You know how most people try not to talk too much about the rewards to avoid rubbing it in people’s faces and pissing them off?  One of the reward winners doesn’t subscribe to that philosophy and goes on and on and on and on and on and, well, you get it.

There’s also an impending strike in the Survivor kitchen.

I did Thanksgiving last year!  It’s someone else’s turn.

The immunity challenge is one of those that involves three different stages, with varying numbers of winners moving on in each round.  You and I and even the dumbest person alive know that there is no way Scabby is winning immunity unless the challenge involves being a whining wiener (Thanks Denise!).

These challenges are biased against my bitchiness.

Meet me back here in a couple of days and we’ll discuss those whining wieners, how you turn a peasant into a princess, and yet another tribal council chock full of goodies.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I’ve got my whole family coming over in a bit, so I’ve gotta get back to work; I’m in the weeds BIG TIME!!  I hope you all know hope thankful I am for TVGasm and for you (I get so mushy around the holidays).  J-Mo’s said it before; comments are like crack to recappers, and you guys never fail to give me my daily fix!  Thanks for that!!

Gobble, gobble.

Curious if Abi was born in the USA or how long has she been here? Cultural differences my ass – a nasty snatch is a nasty snatch no matter where you are from. The disillusionment she showed caused me to have disillusionment about her disillusionment.

Her level of English suggests she’s been in the States for quite a while, but the accent says she was born over there. So, yes, maybe there are cultural differences in the way Brazilians and Americans interact with each other, but she has certainly been around Americans enough to know what works and what doesn’t. She’s just a dim bulb, that’s all.

Didn’t sarcasastire live in Brazil for a while? She’ll be able to tell us if all Brazilians are nasty, spiteful, suspicious idiots.

I kind of feel bad for Pete, for hitching him wagon to this ass — no doubt he’d been hoping to ride her to the end. Pete’s almost redeemed himself, except when he starts ragging on Skupin. It’s just not fair to make fun of the mentally handicapped.

Love how Denise called people out for playing the “take the asshole to the finals” strategy.

Oh yeah, and did anyone else think Artis looked like Mr. Clean (Pirate version) on the jury?

@itchy, mrs cranky lived in Brazil for several years in her early teens and likes to tell me how much nicer and laid back everyone in Brazil is compared to the average American. So, when we watch Survivor this season, I ask her to tell me again how nice “every” Brazilian is. Her reply? “Shut up.”

@itchy, I was just on my way! Having lived in Brazil, I can say that they are the friendliest of people and makes friends quite easily. I mean, this is a culture where you greet everyone with a kiss on both cheeks!

With that said, Abi reminds me of a certain *type.* In Brazil, I do remember seeing how the some of the wealthy youth treated the poor begging in the better parts of the city, how they would insultingly dismiss beggars or look upon them and street kids with barely disguised resentment or disgust. The reason I bring this up is that Abi strikes me as one of those people. She is most likely a privileged, entitled girl whose personality is the product of never being challenged on anything. She is of the mentality that, yea, people have less than she does and should accept that. She already has! She shouldn’t have to hide it or feel guilty just because she has more. (That’s what I got from her detailing the reward to the rest of tribe. It never occurred to her to be gracious because she *expects* to have the best of everything and she *accepts* that other people will have less and…[shrugs] that’s life. Not her problem.) And that indifference is the root of all her assholery. (And Colton’s.)

I also wager that her capabilities in English may not be from having spent much time here in the US, but from getting a private school education in Brazil. A lot of my well-to-do friends in Brazil speak and read English quite well, having learned it in school. So, perhaps when Abi says it’s cultural, she means she comes from a sub-culture of people who happen to live very well in a country where children sleep on the street, and if she doesn’t feel guilty about that, how could she possibly know she should feel sorry for a bunch of people eating rice and beans while she’s getting a massage on the other side of the island? The girl is confused about this thing called compassion!

Abi-Maria is rude and lacks any trace of social skills or self-awareness. That’s not a “cultural thing.” And I’m kind of insulted that Probst brought that up. This whole condescending line: “In America, when people laugh at you, that’s a bad thing” was ridiculous. It’s a bad thing everywhere, dude, even in Brazil.

Was he actually trying to get people to keep her around? Going on about how great she’d be to bring to the end was ridiculous. I know she’s providing drama, but he really needs to put a lid on those intrusions. I’m glad Denise shut that line of thinking down pretty quickly.

I mean, as a player it makes perfect sense to take goats to the finals, but it’s not really entertaining. Once Carter and Abi-Maria go home, we’ll have a really competitive endgame, and I’m looking forward to that.

I felt no sympathy for Scabby at TC. I was angry at Probst for picking and picking at that scab, though. And I think Denise handled being put on the spot very well. I’ve read that Abi in real life is well liked by her friends but after sarcasatire’s post I’m thinking her friends probably have the same attitude as Scabs so don’t recognize her behaviour for what it is. She’s just a nasty piece of work.

I wanted to like RC but her Ponderosa time seems to indicate that she was just the lesser of two mean girls. Or maybe it’s just the annoying laugh that I dislike. Is anyone else watching Ponderosa? Could Jeff K be any more bitter and assholey?

My Fantasy Survivor picks sucked again this week. I did pick right about who got voted out so there’s that.

Yeah, Ponderosa is definitely not making RC look sympathetic at all. She was definitely the lesser of two mean girls. Interestingly, on Twitter Abi-Maria has apologized to Lisa and said some very nice things about her, and the rest of the cast seems to get along with Abi-Maria as well — Malcolm, Pete and Carter just visited her. Either she learned some things about herself through the experience or she’s much more tolerable when she’s well-fed and well-rested.

RC, though, still hasn’t let it go and is continuing a Twitter feud with her. Oddly, the least bitter person at Ponderosa right now is Artis. Too bad we didn’t get to see much of him on the show, because he seems like a cool guy.

Denise better win this, by the way. She’s just a great balance of strength, intellect and composure. It’s rare to find someone on Survivor like that, and despite being very “normal” I also don’t find her boring, so that’s a plus.

@Itchy, I’m sure Tom Westman (Palau) and Brian Heidik (Thailand) are concerned about Denise’s condemnation of the “take the unlikable person I aligned with to the end” strategy. Duh, it’s a pretty consistent winning strategy on Survivor, so why not use it? I really found Denise to be a real bitch and it reminded me of her treatment of Roxanne over her religiosity when there used to be a red team this season. I find people who deem themselves morally superior for no other reason than because they’re in the “in-crowd” to be annoying. I’d started to really come around on Denise, but my god, what a condescending bitch she was on Wednesday night.

@DH, good call on Denise — she rubs me the wrong way too. That 1920′s haircut of hers doesn’t help. I bet she can dance a mean Charleston. I’d like to see Penner win since he at least makes an effort not to be an asshole, and considering how much Jeff Kent wanted to beat Penner above everyone else, that would be icing on the cake. Jeff Kent is a WINNER — that’s what he does and that’s who he is, at least according to him. I would love to see somebody Kent considers to be a loser win it all.

I don’t think Denise considers herself morally superior. Probst was the one who used the “good people” term, not her, and that’s because Probst always divides the players into black-and-white “heroes” and “villains.” Denise just doesn’t want to take a goat to the end, which isn’t a new strategy. Kim also refused to take goats last season. She could have opted for the unlikable Alicia and useless Christina, but instead took the articulate Sabrina and hardworking Chelsea. Her rationale was that if you want to be seen as a confident, competent player, you need to take actual competition to the end.

Jurors often get bitter when someone they view as undeserving gets dragged to the finals. Several of the One World Jurors had that sentiment about Christina, which is why Kim cut her loose at the final four. A goat can get stray votes if the Jury is disgusted by the alliance-leader, and I think it’s fine to actively work a “slaughter the goats” strategy. Cirie also did that in Panama when she targeted Courtney.

Furthermore, keeping Abi-Maria around is bad for Denise’s game. A goat presents a temptation to the other players, and Lisa and Michael could easily drag Abi-Maria to the end, eliminating Denise’s spot in the finals. Getting rid of her now makes her less of a problem later.

Anyway, I don’t think Denise said anything that was that moralizing. She doesn’t like Abi-Maria, and she wanted to shut down’s Probst’s insinuations that Abi-Maria should be kept around. Probst wants to keep around a dramatic player because it’s a show. Denise has a game to play, so I like that she shut that down.

I don’t know what Tom has to do with anything. Wasn’t he going to take Ian to the finals before Ian asked to be voted out? I need to watch Palau again to refresh my memory, but I don’t think anyone except Ian was planning on taking Katie, and even that was because Ian played with his emotions and had bonded with Katie, not because he viewed her as a goat. And Brian could have sat next to anyone in the Thailand final five and won. His entire alliance — if not his entire tribe — consisted of goats. What a miserable season that was.

Nope, sorry, I think you’re misreading Denise (possibly through your own filter?). I don’t think she’s condescending — I think her reaction was entirely one of having had to deal with an extremely irrational person (Flabby Maria) and finally just giving up out of sheer exasperation.

Granted, bringing the goat to the final makes a certain amount of sense — but there’s no question that it taints the win. I mean, anyone would have beat Hantz in the final. So where the moral victory in that? Life shouldn’t only be about the money, should it?

Which brings me to Denise’s supposed atheism — she never said she was atheist. She only pointed out — rightfully so– that praying to a god will not help her win Survivor. I haven’t seen Denise treat anyone with anything but respect, including bible thumpers like Lisa and Skupin, with the exception of Scabies Marie — but who the hell could respect that anyway?

That said, I don’t see Denise winning this. But as pretty good year points out, she has a much better chance at winning if she can convince the others not to use the goat strategy (and keep Scabby Maria).

I like Denise and have since the beginning. I didn’t have a problem with the TC council because it’s not like she went there wanting to beat down Abi. Jeff had his hands all in that and I thought she handled it well, especially considering how everyone there, even her allies, has talked about how mean and annoying Abi is. I think the blame lies with Jeff for just not letting it go. Denise showed considerable constraint and I hope she wins if Penner can’t pull it off.

Also don’t have a problem with Denise’s comments in the TH about Roxy praying. It was obvious she was asked a question off camera and responded to it. Tactfully.

It could be that that Denise’s contempt for prayer with the possibility of her being an atheist makes itchy like her a little bit more than he would otherwise. Anyway, the haircut comment was just an aside, and I wouldn’t like her any better if she had the most beautimous hair in the world.

@PGY, what Tom Westman has to do with the argument is that he beat Katie in the final two pretty handily and Brian Heidik beat Clay in much the same manner. Regardless of the circumstances, they both dragged two alliance members who had no ability to win to the final TC to have an easier time winning. It’s a simple point that I was making by pointing out two obvious examples of where Denise was wrong. The purpose of playing Survivor is to win the million dollars, so I don’t understand why Denise is trying to act like there are moral victories. If Abi makes it to the Final 3 and Denise chooses not to vote for her, that was exactly the purpose of the opposing person bringing her to the end. Denise made herself sound and look like a moron and I resent the fact that she made me have some sympathy for Abi-Maria.

@Itchy, there are no asterisks next to the Survivor winners just because a certain faction of fans hate the outcome of the season. Natalie White cashed her check and she deserved to win. Maybe her win was a fuck you to Russell, but she won nonetheless. You win Survivor by any means necessary, so I don’t understand the argument of going out there \for the experience.\ If you didn’t want the money, you’d go on a nature hike or a safari.

There are many different ways of winning Survivor. They’re still winning. It’s all down to how one chooses to win. Denise’s opinion — that there are betting ways of winning than carrying a Hantz to the end — happens to correspond with my own worldview.

On the other hand, I gave kudos to Nathalie for putting up with that loathsome personality for as long as she did. So call it combat pay.

I don’t know if Denise was being contemptuous of prayer. I think she was just scoffing at the idea that jeebus was going to intercede on behalf of someone playing Survivor. Again, this definitely corresponds with my worldview.

It’s just nice to have someone honest on the show for once.

  28. 28

    Posted November 25, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Derek: You can’t say “regardless of the circumstances,” though, because circumstances are actually a big part of both of those situations. Tom wasn’t planning on taking Katie to the end. He was going to take the much more competitive Ian. Similarly, Brian would have won against anyone, and he actually had an uphill battle against Clay since Clay had developed better relationships with the other tribe than Brian ever did.

I think what I’m trying to say is that you can play to have the kind of experience you want to have and play to win at the same time. I mean, Denise is a huge fan, and I’m a huge fan too. I wouldn’t want someone like Abi-Maria ruining my once-in-a-lifetime adventure with her sour attitude, especially if I thought I had several other paths to victory. Only one person can win every season, so I think most people go on the show recognizing that they only have a 1/18 chance of winning, and hoping that they have the best adventure possible regardless. I think playing Survivor is quite different from just a nature hike.

Besides, Denise isn’t in a position to keep Abi-Maria around as a personal goat. Everyone hates her, and everyone wants her gone. If Denise stuck her neck out to try and keep her, that would put her on the outside as well, and like I said earlier it would actually work against Denise’s game, since a goat takes up a seat in the final three and could easily bump a player like Denise out of it.

Well, sure, everyone has a right to their opinion. I just find it odd though. Denise is one of the few intelligent older women ever to play this game — and not only that, she’s physically fit, an excellent competitor who never gives up during a competition, gets along with pretty much everyone, smartly aligned herself with one of the stronger players from the very beginning, and apparently she’s very active around the camp as well. Seems like she’s the total package.

Well, except for those weird monkey faces she makes.

Are you sure you’re not holding a grudge because of that one comment -which wasn’t even disrespectful! –of hers at the beginning of the season where she mentioned she wouldn’t be praying for divine intervention during the game?

I actually think Abi-Maria has some strategic insight — she was right to say that Lisa is very possibly being played by her new alliance. Now I like Lisa, but I do agree that the whole, “Well, they were being nice to me” attitude is dumb. Of course an opposing alliance is going to be nice to the bottom wheel. That’s how it goes.

Anyway, Abi-Maria doesn’t strike me as a complete void like Purple Kelly or Carter. She at least seems to be thinking about the numbers and had a very practical, Tandang-to-the-end mentality, which can work more often than nto. It’s just that her social game was completely nonexistent and you really can’t make that many big moves unless people, you know, like you and trust you and are willing to play with you.

Or if you find Immunity Idols.

Actually, come to think of it, she’s not that different from Hantz in theory, except she’s completely useless in challenges.

@PGY, why should Lisa trust Abi-Maria and Pete when she had the “Tandang to the end” mentality and they shit on her big move to try and oust Malcolm two episodes ago? When she tried to discuss it with them, she got blasted and told that they, in fact, didn’t trust her so why would Lisa really stay loyal to people who weren’t going to be loyal to her? They even outed her at TC and Pete, in his asides, mentioned that he trusted Malcolm (new-Tandang) over Lisa, anyway. I think Lisa’s damned either way, but at least she explained herself clearly as to why she made the jump over to Penner’s side and it makes sense.

    Posted November 27, 2012 at 12:58 pm

To me, it had less to do with the fact that Abi-Maria didn’t trust her, and more to do with the fact that the Matsing/Kalabaw alliance is made up of the “nice people” — or at least people that are older and whom Lisa can relate to. If anything, Lisa’s engaging in the same kind of behavior you’re accusing Denise of by siding with a group of people that she’s going to have a very hard time beating over the unlikable Abi-Maria and Pete.

Besides, Abi-Maria said that she didn’t trust Lisa. She didn’t say that she was going to turn on Lisa. Big difference. Granted, Lisa was on the bottom of Tandang and now she could easily be on the bottom of the new alliance. I don’t see her winning because she’s going to have a reputation of being fickle.
