The Voice Recap: The Steal Gains Power

Welcome back to The Voice! The Battle Rounds continue and according to the promos that I’ve seen non-stop, the ‘steal’ is the new star of the show. I bet Christina is going to claw the steal’s eyes out. I also don’t know why it’s called a ‘steal’. The coach has already gotten rid of them; shouldn’t it be a ‘save’? Oh well.

Shit is getting real

Our first pair is from team Blake. He is pairing up Terisa Griffin and Julio Cesar Castillo. For those that don’t remember, Terisa is sassy, black and just like every woman in Cee-lo’s life. Julio was in a mariachi band and sang ‘La Bamba’ during the blind audition. Blake has chosen the song ‘Conga’ by Gloria Estefan. I so don’t like this song. It’s very fast and Julio gets tongue-tied during rehearsals. Seriously – is that Dave Grohl playing piano? This has really bothered me, so I actually paused my DVR to look it up online. Do my dismay, and I’m sure Dave Grohl’s relief, it is not him on piano. It is a musician, Paul Mirkovich, for anyone that cares or is as neurotic as me.

Terisa is suddenly self-conscious about why she has been paired with Julio. She thinks that it is to get rid of her. Blake tells her that he wants to challenge them and that he doesn’t want to get rid of anyone. Except whomever sucks and loses this round. She is somewhat reassured. Blake is worried that Julio will lose pace and then throw Terisa off. I’m worried about this song sucking.

During the battle, Terisa definitely out sings Julio and is bouncing all over the place. Even though she is singing better, his singing is better suited to the song. Ok, Terisa just did some sort of growl/feral cat scream. I don’t even know what the hell that was, but she accompanied it with a clawing motion and I am a little frightened. Christina, for once, is speechless. I kind of get the impression that she thinks the performance was a joke, but doesn’t want to say it. Cee-lo thought it was cool, but liked Terisa’s voice. Adam comments that it was odd, but it worked. He claims that ‘Blake outdid himself’ and kind of looks like he is thinking the same thing as Christina. Blake thinks they both did awesome, but picks Julio. Backstage, I’m pretty sure Julio almost puked during his interview. In an upset, Cee-lo steals Terisa.

Team Christina is up next. She has picked Dez Duron and Paulina to sing ‘Just the Way You Are’. Dez was the hottie from last year that got through this year. Paulina, according to Paulina, has a sweet, but sassy voice. I think she is trying a little too hard to be ‘quirky’. Dez sounds like he is trying to over-pronounce every syllable. He is nervous, but Billy Joe tells him that it’s good to be nervous; nervous is your friend. Paulina keeps trying to add shit to the song and honestly, she sounds like she is having an orgasm. Christina advises them not to over think it and Billy Joe throws in that they better not blow it. Way to encourage! Gang member Christina has one last day with them and keeps telling Dez to relax.  I bet if he came back to her hotel room, she could get him to relax.

I really wish the judges would stress more to the contestants that they don’t need to do run after run or tons of vocal gymnastics, especially since so very few of them do them well. Nearly every battle round ends in a screeching match. I turn on the mute toward the end of most songs so I don’t have my ear drums shattered.

Loved the Hall & Oats performance…. Thought Nicholas was amazing and I was really sad to see Todd go. He’s really really good.
