The Voice Recap: The Steal Gains Power

During the battle, the song about made me fall asleep. I did find out that Nicholas is actually a soulful black man under all that facial hair. Adam, Blake and Christina all thought it was awesome and Cee-lo ends up going with Nicholas. I feel kind of bad because nobody stole Todd.

Team Blake is up next and he has chosen Lelia Broussard (Moved to New York at 17) and Suzanna Choffel (Teaches music to toddlers). They are singing ‘Dog Days are Over’ by Florence and the Machine. Lelia is a great performer, while Suzanna needs to let go of the technical details. Blake tells her to forget about being a teacher. He wants her to cut loose and lose herself in the song. It’s battle time and both of them are really good. I don’t know who I would pick. Christina and Cee-lo think they were both good, but would pick Lelia. Adam says that he screwed up not fighting harder for Suzanna during the blind audition. Blake ends up going with Suzanna and nobody steals Lelia.

Our final pairing is team Christina. She is putting Joselyn Rivera against Sylvia Yacoub. Joselyn is very sweet and makes Sylvia look that much more aggressive. I liked Sylvia during the blind audition, but not so much now. Her mom is from Egypt and wasn’t able to pursue singing, so Sylvia is doing this all for her. They are going to be singing ‘Best Think I Never Had’. I have never heard this song in my life. Christina warns Sylvia that she needs to make sure that she doesn’t overpower Joselyn. Billy Joe channels his inner Mr. Miyagi and tells us that ‘With great power comes great responsibility’. Joselyn, on the other hand, needs to find her comfort zone. She can’t overcompensate for a softer voice. Sylvia just needs to gear down and not be so intense.

During the battle, I am again struck by the fact that not only have I never heard this song, but I really don’t think I like it. The whole song, Sylvia looks pissed, like she is going to kick someone’s ass. Cee-lo comments that Joselyn impressed him, but can’t pick anyone – they were both great. Adam and Blake both pick Joselyn because Sylvia was a little too much. After this, Cee-lo changes his mind and says he would pick Sylvia. Christina says that Joselyn really shined, but Sylvia came out like fire. Really angry fire. She likes fire, so she picks Sylvia. Blake and Adam both try to steal, but she goes with Adam. Christina is glad Adam got her, and I’m kind of getting a vibe of her being a bitch to Blake. She obviously has some schoolgirl crush on Adam, not that I blame her, but give Blake a chance, too.

That’s it for Monday’s battle rounds! Adam has used both of his steals, Blake and Cee-lo have each used one, while Christina hasn’t used any. Things are heating up, so check back for the next battle round recap!

I really wish the judges would stress more to the contestants that they don’t need to do run after run or tons of vocal gymnastics, especially since so very few of them do them well. Nearly every battle round ends in a screeching match. I turn on the mute toward the end of most songs so I don’t have my ear drums shattered.

Loved the Hall & Oats performance…. Thought Nicholas was amazing and I was really sad to see Todd go. He’s really really good.
