Two contestants fired from The Apprentice and already we’ve lost the contest’s two African American males and one gay man. Al Sharpton isn’t complaining yet, but the gay blogosphere is rumbling about the alleged homophobia Donald Trump exhibited in last night’s episode.
We laughed when, in the boardroom scene, Trump actually asked if gay contestant Carey Sherrell “ramrodded” his ideas about his “gay swimsuit.” Jaws dropped at the bennyhillness of it all when he (or his writers) one-upped himself by pushing deeper, asking if Carey “ramrodded the bathing suit down everybody’s throat.” And we couldn’t believe the editing decisions that had the show ending with the Jaime Pressley lookalike contestant standing by the mansion door, saying that Carey’s ouster “sucked.”
Combine that with Trump’s unkind words about Rosie O’Donnell’s sexuality, and the gay backlash is not inevitable.
But when it comes to real double entrendre giggles, Trump has been trumped by the fired contestant himself. Check out Carey’s heartfelt exclusive interview with Buddy TV:“…I designed the women’s suits too and you don’t see footage of that. That’s the part that really sucks. And, you know the part that really sucks more? When Trump goes ‘I think you ram-rodded these designs down their throat,’ and then he asked Michelle about it. You could see the hesitation on her face, and you could see her think about it, and she realized it was her out, so she went with it….
“It really sucks. It’s hard…”
(Carey may get another last laugh. He says he’s planning to write a “mini tell-all” book called Another Apprentice Book. And on February 1st, he’s launching his own swimsuit line. No it’s not called “gay swimsuits.” Blue Motion Squared will feature the longer “board shorts.” Not gay swimsuits.)
