The Simpsons are officially from Vermont

Springfield, Vermont, today was proclaimed the official hometown of The Simpsons. The town beat out 13 other Springfields for the honour, which includes hosting the premiere of The Simpsons Movie on July 21st.

The town was a late entry. 20th Century Fox ran an online poll on the USA Today website inviting people to vote for their favorite of 14 videos submitted by the competing Springfields, who tried to show how much they are like the fictional Springfield.

Vermont’s Springfield has a bowling alley, a pub, a prison and a nuclear power plant just down the road.
The town of 9300 submitted a video shot by a 17-year-old volunteer cameraman and featuring Homer– played by a local talk-show host– running through town chasing a big, pink, rolling doughnut. Eventually, a mob chases him into a movie theatre.

Competition was fierce. Massachusetts got Senator Ted Kennedy, the inspiration behind the voice (and lifestyle) of the Simpson’s Mayor Quimby, to appear in its entry.

    How could Oregon lose?

    Geographically, only Oregon could claim to be close to all of the things that appear on every show. A canyon, waterfalls, volcano, glaciers, mountains, badlands, dessert, dams, Las Vegas, the ocean, nuclear power plant, The only thing that Vermont has is that you can drive to New York City (one episode).

    I am one of 200 volunteers who appeared in the winning Springfield Vermont Simpsons contest video. We were all high as a kite the day we won the right to host the world premiere of The Simpsons Movie. But then our Chamber of Commerce turned against us. They decided to exclude us from the invitation list giving our seats to the elite members of the community instead. And not even a word of thanks or mention of us in the public ceremony outside the theater!
