Top Chef Masters Recap: Pop Up Freakshow

In Lorena and Kerry’s vehicle…

Team Jerkoff

they are doing exactly the opposite.
Kerry realizes that Lorena is upset with him, but he doesn’t really give a crap.

At Whole Foods, it’s the usual race although Lorena almost runs an old man over.

Latin Menace

She’s a total menace to all of the patrons telling her to get out of the way, etc. Classy. She decided to stick with her “Latin American flair” but she’s going to mix it up. She’s going to make a sweet main course and a spicy dessert… with cilantro.

Chris is going to make pate or more specifically, a classic terrine. Personally, I don’t really like terrines, but they are a culinary challenge, particularly to make in 4 hours, from scratch. Chris says that in has “embraced patience with this competition.” I think its true, I see a huge change in him since the first few episodes. He is, indeed, more patient. Then again, he doesn’t have Art around to bug the sh*t out of him, so maybe that’s why he’s more patient.

Chris went slightly over budget

At check out, Chris is slightly over his $750 budget, by a mere $147.50. No worries, Patti will give his extra stuff. I LOVE these too. Lorena says “They are so nice to each other but they will learn that Lorena Garcia is the one to beat.” Ugh, I hate when people refer to themselves in the third person. It’s so 1998.

Kerry is making chilled cauliflower soup. He got the recipe from Hilary Clinton. They are in the same sewing circle.

Patricia is making Bison Steak. Chris is making a terrine that he didn’t have enough time to properly execute- so he’s saying a prayer.

Pate Express

And Lorena is making a 7 layer burrito with fire sauce coulis.

Lorena is all about the presentation

Patricia notes that Lorena always cooks the same – Latin American cuisine. Patricia’s background is broader.

Looks like Christmas

It’s a race to the end, and Chris and Patricia help Kerry get his dishes packed up in the nick of time.

The following day, the Chefs gather their food from the refrigerators and proceed to the venue. They have 15 minutes to prep. The first thing Chris wants to do it to see what happened to his food. Lorena, quickly, realizes that her mousse does not have the same consistency as it did the day prior. As the Chefs prep, the plaza starts to fill with people.

The crowd gathers

I was Team Chris from the start, but by the second episode it was Team Chris/Patricia/Takashi, so I’m gutted that the Black Hole of Caracas has been responsible for two of them leaving. She’s even making me rethink my own love of cilantro because, gurr, find a new fresh herb. It’s not that great.

But I will defend Kerry’s seemingly dick move in the QF. They could have had better communication and he was kind of a jerk in running her around, but what failed her dish was the rice not the salmon and she admitted that she was very particular in the way she wanted the rice prepared. Why would you choose something you’re very particular about if you can’t control the situation? Yes, Kerry focused on perfecting his dish…and his dish won. Would they have won with her Marie Callendar’s salmon dish…with Cilantro? Doubtful, so they probably won specifically because Kerry said “Screw you and your rice, Lorena. I’m focusing on my shrimp and pasta.”

I was so pissed off that Lorena didn’t go home and I’m really hoping we’re not being set up for a Lorena win. I’m definitely rooting for Chris!

I predict Lorena will be the winner because during final commercial break the same Taco-Bell-Lorena-Ad ran in succession…no other chef really had a chance…why have I so needlessly wasted my precious time on this….OH I Know…Hot Host Curtis!

Well, I have to disagree with everyone here. I was glad to see Patricia go; what a snob she was. So what if Lorena cooks only Latin, that’s her specialty. Does that mean Patricia’s better than a top French chef, someone like Guy Savoy, because she has more “worldly experience”? Give me a break. Patricia seemed to enjoy demeaning Lorena, which besides it being mean, it may have been sexist as well.

Not that Lorena’s my favorit – Chris is. But that’s based on his skill. And he seems nice enough. Patricia needed to go home.

If Lorena wins then the show is definately rigged. She should never have won last week. This show has disappointed me.

@zerocool – I have to disagree with Patricia being a “snob” overall – was she a snob to Lorena? Yes, but I think Lorena is a “one trick Monkey” (to quote PR). HOWEVER, I think overall, Patricia has shown that she respects other chefs, even the ones with Jerk Moves (I’m looking at YOU – Kerry). I think we heard Patricia consistently praising other chefs (not just Taskashi and Chris and she even praised Lorena in the last episode).

Lorena, on the other hand, has consistently been derogatory about every other chef (with the exception, occasionally, of Art) and only has praise for herself. That to me is much more snobbish.

Of course, we KNOW the producers (even in a “Masters” show), ask the questions that they know will get the most drama. And, personally, the Taco Bell commercials aren’t helping Lorena in my eyes, either…

Not understanding the Lorena hate. I’m not a fan of that Oaf Kerry. Liked Patricia, but agree with ZeroCool that she came off as a snob toward the middle/end of the season. Too bad.

Also, I find the critic with the balding hair and glasses to be enormously irritating.

Loved your recap – I am with you – Team Chris! I respect his culinary viewpoint about the total use of an animal, his boyish love of food, his nerdy glasses and nice pecs! ;) I love terrines and pates, so it would be treat to have something like that at my picnic.

I am sorry to see Patricia go, but I understand the reason why. The story she had with the picnic was good, but the execution was flawed. But I will miss the big sister/little brother vibe with Chris.

Kerry and Lorena – meh… I am not invested in them enough to hate, but not feeling them for the title.

Hey, anyone looking forward to the tightly wound douchtastic “Life after Top Chef”? :)

I don’t know, Lorena had two crap dishes in the same show. Do you think Bravo bought Taco Bell? Sort of how Arsenio won Celebrity apprentice right before his show started? Suspicious!! Waving White Flags comment was HYSTERICAL!!! I also wouldn’t want to wear nice white clothes and carry chairs around. Guess I don’t get the concept, being American!
