Flipping over art! (I bet I use that caption again!)

Hey ‘Gasmii!  Despite being an episode about MOVEMENT, last night’s Work of Art was a little slow for me.  This week marks the first group challenge, which actually went down pretty easily as far as group challenges go. The only drama happened when A) Simon came to advise the group and his advice was “this sucks, start over,” and B) when a group member totally went his/her own way. I don’t know why I’m trying to hide what actually happened when we all watched and already know.  Call it an element of suspense. I like to think I’m that interesting.

Anyway, judging time brought back our buddy Jeanne Greenburg Rohatyn, whose last name I remember how to spell by saying “Ro-hatin’” and remembering there’s a “y” in there.  Cuz she’s hatin’!  Actually, she loves some stuff, too.  A surprising candidate is in the top two for this challenge, and that surprising candidate wins. I don’t think he/she SHOULD have won, but good for him or her.  I love gender pronouns.

The full recap, hopefully going up sometime on Friday, will cover all the nuance in between, all those personal dynamics and tics that keep us watching even when the art is totally boring. I hope I don’t fall asleep in the middle of it like I did this episode!  (Oops!) See you then!

About

Time for an update! I used to be a tall, athletic editor who lived on the East coast. Oh, I still am, only now I've gained back all the weight I lost, which changes my life-tone quite a bit. Now that I'm married, I have a lot less time to watch Bravo and Food network. We usually end up watching Big Bang Theory reruns ("all of my friends, all of my friends, all of my friends") or Wipeout. Or WWE Raw. Wow. How life has changed!  Join me as we chat about my breast friend Patti Stanger and her love minions. Or maybe we'll talk about art during Work of Art. Whatever we're watching, don't be shy--tell me what you think!

So, what the hell is the big damn deal with shit and art? Can you EVEN explain that to me? When the hell can something pretty or nice be a freaking work of Art? Stop assalting me with body parts, pedophiles, shit, vaginas, and digestion… draw a freaking snow capped mountain with a daffodil sprouting in the snow for god’s sake.

My new catchphrase is going to be, “I’m going up on the roof to chant.” It was pretty freakin’ funny when Simon called them all over and basically said WTF?

I get the distinct feeling that as long as a surprising candidate is still in this competition, I will be saying “Seriously?” a lot.

I was with Simon and his start over speech because I can’t imagine how you go from parkour to digestion and geopolitical migration without being a Monty Python skit.

I DVR’d the repeat last night of the first episode so I could pause on some of the pieces that just flashed on the screen for a fraction of a second. One of the previous works from the girl who won was a couple of life-size paper figures in a small room with a concrete floor. They both had some streamers coming out of their asses and there were several realistic looking turds on the floor. And the guy who was eliminated first was one-note?

Yeah, this week was really disappointing. No one made anything that blew me away, although I did like Hot Sara’s sculpture piece. I mostly agree about the winning piece. It wasn’t great or anything, but it wasn’t terrible. Just sort of “Meh.” Then again, everyone was pretty much “meh” this week so it didn’t really matter to much either way.

@Cranky: Yeah, I just took notice of the poop sculpture yesterday, too. I’m glad she hasn’t done paper sculpture two challenges in a row, or else I WOULD think she was one-note. But pooping is universal. I welcome it any day of the week!

I also checked out Ugo’s other works. Basically, that line art transfers onto different media/objects? Eh. Glad he left.

Because I’m going to be thinking so hard about global migration, the full recap is pushed back to Sunday again. Sorry!!
