That's What Friends Are For -
by J-Unit
I have a confession to make. It turns out that I was being slightly hypocritical when I previously implored people to start watching 24 even if they had stopped in previous seasons. Charity begins at home, you see. And it turns out my own parents had failed to Tivo the program this year. With one major twist effectively behind us, we now focus on on the remainder of the season which is quietly featuring the uncontrollable downward spiral that is inevitable for all the characters at one point or another.
So, where did we leave off from last week? Oh, that's right. Potential nuclear holocaust! The terrorists had succeeded in using the nuclear override to get control of 104 plants. For those of you keeping score at home, that would be good for 10 or 12 million deaths and around 300,000 square miles of the United States that would become uninhabitable for at least five years. Now that's what I call a sticky situation.
Luckily for the citizens of the US, CTU is on the job. When Audrey Heller was in captivity she was very conveniently able to recognize one of the terrorist accomplices, meaning he had worked in the government. When Jack and the marines came bustin' down the door, Audrey was conveniently saved to identify this accomplice, who himself had conveniently made it out of the terrorist hideout right before the shitstorm came down on them. Audrey is ready to go through archival footage of the fundraiser where she had met the guy, but since it was all on archive, Jack would have to go to a security facility (in Burbank no less) and bring back the digitized tape. When Audrey learns how bad the situation is with the power plants, she decides to go with Jack to save as much time as possible.
This seems like a great idea to everybody except for Paul, Audrey's husband. It took him only a little while longer than James Heller to figure out that Jack and Audrey were an item. There's nothing like being in a hostage situation to get the people around you to see more clearly. Paul puts up a small fuss about letting Audrey go with Jack, but seriously what is he going to do? It's a national security issue. Realizing his own futility, he reminds Jack "She's my wife, don't forget it." This guy is really starting to suck, which makes me think he is either a mole or will die a horrible death, or both. Any of those scenarios would be great for me.
While some may consider that little scenario at CTU a bit of a lover's quarrel, there are starting to be some really domestic problems in the Arnaz household. Dina is still coming to grips with the idea that her son was out being killed and that her husband doesn't seem to care anything about it. You can imagine how she must have felt when Behrooz called her and she knew he was alive. And although she must have been swelling with pride when she learned that Behrooz was actually able to kill somebody, that did not last long as she learned that her husband was the one who had ordered her son to be killed, and not the leader of the cell.
