90210: And I'll See Your True Colors Shining Through

This week on 90210, Jazz-Hands creeps out Harry and Becky, Matthews looks greasier than ever and both Naomi and Borianna are discovered to be lying jerks. In other news, the writers throw caution to the wind and just kinda ignore anything that happened in the original show.

Peace out, Jackie. I guess, I didn't know you at all...

And we're running down a hospital hallway. The paramedics cart Jackie down to the ER as Silver spasticaly runs after them. She's told by the emotionally devoid ER doctor to wait in the lobby. Jack Shephard ain't got nothing on this bitch's bedside manner.

ScreenShot002.jpg

"We have to go back, Kate! We have to go back!"
Sorry...God, I miss that show.

West Bev. Naomi finds Navid, where else but in the Blaze Staff Room. She's there to join and save Navid's "little news broadcast thingie". How, Navid doesn't ask? With a sex advice segment called "Clark After Dark". Aww, shout out. But seriously folks, she's really there to help herself to some extra-curriculars for her CU application.

ScreenShot003.jpg

Look Naomi, blowing Navid is never the answer. Ever!

After some resistance, Navid agrees to let her join sans segment. If she's serious about joining he tells her to help unpack the new equipment that's coming in tomorrow. Navid moves onto some important exposition. He tells Naomi about Borianna's anti-climactic return to drugs.

We cut to Borianna denying said drug use. Naomi wonders why Navid would say it. Borianna doesn't know but it's possible that it's true Navid is upset that she moved on. Naomi wants to believe her but Borianna doesn't have a great track record with drugs and the truth. She assures Naomi that she's not using. Besides, she remembers what Borianna was like when she was on coke. Is she acting that way now? Ooh, she's good.

Hospital. Kelly arrives. Silver tells her the paramedics said Jackie was in cardiac arrest but they were able to get her heart beating again in the ambulance. The doctor finally comes out to tell them Jackie had a cardiac arrest (we know!) but, because of chemo, she's too weak to make it past this episode, err, I mean much longer. Despite that, Kelly's still to much of a selfish bitch to go see her dying mother...on her death bed. Dying. Of cancer.

ScreenShot004.jpg

"My boss said I should work on my bedside manner. So here it goes: Your mom will be dead soon. How was that?"

Casa Wilson. Dixon continues to be a mopey bitch this week. Conversely, sex with Jazz-Hands has done wonders for Annie's bitchitude. She delightfully tells Harry and Becky about Jazz-Hands. "He's a filmmaker, but more like a genius." Given her recent track record, Harry will check his transcripts to verify her assessment, nonetheless. They plan a little getting to know the boyfriend meal for the next night. Then, in what I'm positive is a shout out, Annie tells us it's Friday.

ScreenShot006.jpg

That hot beef injection really put some pep in her step, didn't it?

Annie runs up to her room where Jazz is zipping up his pants. She tells him about dinner and then they kiss. Becky knocks on the door to ask Annie what she thinks Jazz would want for dinner. She can't wait to meet him. Jazz jokes about whether he should climb through the window or use the front door. Then they kiss. Damn you show. Damn you to hell!

ScreenShot008.jpg

God Becky, just look through damn crack in the door. No wonder your kids don't respect you.

West Bev. Dixon tells the gangs (minus Simi) about his brilliant plan to get back at Jen. They could use Straw-Hat's mom's recording studio to record Straw-Hat saying the exact same thing Jen said. Then DJ Mr. Big Dix (shudder) will "mix it down" to make it sound like Jen. Did I miss the part where they talk about how Dixon was a crack baby?

Navid bribes the gang (still minus Simi) with In-N-Out burgers to help him with all this equipment West Bev seems to be getting. Recession?! Hello! Dixon stops when he sees Annie and Jazz-Hands. He mentions to Navid that Annie's been spending a lot of time with "that freak". Navid tells him, and apparently anyone who'll listen, that Jazz is a drug dealer. How about telling Harry? Or a cop? Or someone that can actually do something to STOP him from selling drugs? No? Alright.

haha, i love the screen grab of andrea zukerman at the end

I had to comment on the line about the school in south central having their music program cut - classic LMAO.

Where is Kelly's son??? It's like he never existed. His name never even comes up in conversation!

dani2526:

The writing reminds me a bit of Saved by the Bell...remember all the inconsistencies with Zack's Mom, teacher, etc.? They never really explained anything, they just forgot all about it...Anyway...

DJ Big Dix...how do they get away with that?!! Yuck.

Lovely recap! Thanks!!

ohionancy: i don't even remember what the kid's name is/was?! i guess i could look it up but why bother? the writers didn't. i have a funny feeling that they are phasing him out because they can't get luke perry on...hmmm.

dani2526: my god, you are right!!! now that's a show that would be fun to recap!

As for the Kelly/Jackie inconsistencies... I'm pretty sure Jackie went through phases of being sober throughout Kelly's childhood, and maybe the nose job was one of them? I see where Kelly's coming from..remember when Kelly was going to be a model and then Jackie was pushing her too far and Kelly didn't want to do it, and Jackie made a big deal about Kelly's burns from the fire and how it would affect modeling? It doesn't mean Kelly shouldn't see Jackie on her deathbed, but I could see how she was sick of all Jackie's shit after all these years.
Just because Luke Perry won't come on doesn't mean the kid should be written off! Who are these writers?? It's not that hard to mention the kid once in awhile or show his face.
I wish Jazzhands didn't do that to Navid...I feel sort of bad for him even though yes, he's a creep. And I guess it's bad to be a drug dealer, but how many kids did you know in high school that sold some drugs like pot, xanax, etc...some of those people were pretty popular around school and girls didn't not date them because of it. How come Jazzhands is this horrible drug dealer, but Borianna is still their friend??
That is pretty ridiculous that Harry doesn't remember Jazzhands at that ceremony, or that Harry and Becky might have some compassion for a kid with no friends? My mom would probably tell me not to spend all my time with him, but instead to try to hang out with him in a group so he can meet people. I just want to know Jazzhand's motives...

I agree with Winks regarding the time line. Someone had to schedule Kelly's nose job appt, and it's possible Jackie helped her grab some of the diet pills. I have a tendency to round up, so saying she has 20 years of bad memories is just 3 years off and more a figure of speech. I'm actually happy the writers remembered history from the old 90210.

However, I'm a little upset as I feel as if the writers are destroying characters they finally cleaned up. For instance, I felt Arianna's pill-user storyline last year was trite, but somehow they've decided to bring it back. Why not have her deal with the pressures of a teen actress trying out for teen shows like those on the CW? And, why bring back Jackie, only to kill her off?

I liked the old 90210, b/c, although on the surface, it seemed like sex and drugs, but underneath it showed kids struggling with issues relevant to that age group i.e. shoplifting, suicide, rape, premarital sex. But, the kids don't really struggle so much as things just happen to them. It seems like the show forgot about Arianna's pregnancy (which I'm not sad about), but I thought it was cliched to to put Dixon in the exact same situation, without any reference. Plus, I would've preferred to see him freak out more like a normal kid.

Although I refuse to re-watch it after the 1st few eps I caught in S1 (based on your recaps it seems better), but I still think they could do more.

Great points made! Anich, you're right...wouldn't take much for them to take this show one step higher. It's like they have a bunch of writers who weren't actual fans of the original show. Maybe a bunch of 21 year olds doing the writing?

Yeah, true Winks. There's nothing too odd about a high school "drug dealer." C'mon...like none of these idiots smoke a bowl now and then? Or is it just in style to drink?

I hate when they use and reuse the same old storylines. True for any show. It's just lazy writing. Like on Grey's Anatomy they only use sex as the primary plot line. Nothing of substance anymore there.

Still, I love this show somewhat for its stupidity.

i admit to not being an avid watcher of the post-brenda years. my memories of jackie are of her being sober and decent. so i'm not a fan of what they did to her character. maybe there's stuff that i'm missing. stuff that could have been fleshed out better not having her die so quickly.

the one note i wish the writers of this should would get is "show not tell".

thanks for the comments and for reading!
