90210: Its About Time

Welcome back gang, for the not-so anticipated return of 90210! In the interim, I was thrice married (and subsequently divorced, I don't want to talk about it), had some plastic surgery, cryogenically froze myself for a spell, and ate my weight in Mallomars. Seriously, CW? 3 Weeks mid-season? And yeah, whatever, you may have finally given me what I've been asking for all along but that does not mean all is forgiven, I'm not that easy.

But Annie is. Hiyo!

So in case you forgot what happened on last year's episode, here's a little refresher: Silver wanted to celebrate her birthday by watching scary movies in a graveyard, Dixon obliged. There's a new girl in school who is throwing down all kinds of attitude towards Ryan, and it just so happens she's an undercover cop working on a drug bust. A raid at school forces Naomi to take Adriana's drugs and try to flush them down the toilet, getting her into mucho trouble. Adriana agrees to come clean to the lawyer men but never shows to the meeting. Just as Naomi's leaving a scathing voice message for Adriana, during which she says something along the lines of "you're dead to me", we see Adriana has OD'd. Fin.

This week kicks off with Dixon quizzing Annie for her driving permit test. She's super confident and getting all the questions right; which probably means she'll get into an accident within a week of getting her permit. As they sit down at the breakfast table the conversation turns to homecoming. Dixon with all his adorableness tells his parents that he's asking Silver to homecoming that day. He's got it all planned out; the suit, the shoes, the restaurant, the roofie-colada. Silver's going to be floored.

At school, Silver tells Annie that Ethan will definitely ask her to the dance. Sure! I mean, now that he and Naomi have broken up for the eighth time in 5 episodes, he's totally ready for a rebound lay. As Annie walks away to idle by her locker in case Ethan decides to drop by, Dixon approaches Silver to ask her for homecoming. She flat out denies him (sad!) because homecoming is everything that is wrong with the school. Said the girl who blogs mean things about everyone at the school. We get it, Silver, you're the edgy alterna-chick, just go to F***ing homecoming!

Regardless, Silver has a better idea; she's getting her wisdom teeth pulled, so Dixon can come over and take care of her! What fun! Don't get me wrong, I love a good Vicodin, but to be caretaker of the doped up? Not fun. Especially if its your significant other. Because then you see them the way they would never intentionally let you see them; red swollen face, no makeup, doped up on awesome pills. Pass. But Silver, if you're into sharing, call me! We can play "Oops, I forgot to get up for the bathroom" together!

Ryan is walking up the stairs when some wannabe skaters see him and bolt. In the center of the "grassy knoll" crew is the mysterious new girl. Ryan tells her she shouldn't hang around with such rejects and she flirts with him until he backs off. Is she also running a statutory rape sting or just looking to ruffle a few feathers? Either way, she's really annoying and CLEARLY far too young to be a detective in a sting operation.

My mom does my hair!

Annie is at her locker (weird!) when Ethan comes by. They do their cute little thing for a while until Ethan mans up and discusses homecoming. Which he is not asking Annie to. Wicked burn? Not quite. You see, he's not asking her because it's too soon after the breakup. BUT, good news for all the desperate girls out there; he is going, and proposes that Annie goes stag too and they pseudo-surprise each other and ultimately dance together.

In the principal's office, Naomi and her mother were brought in to let her know what's up with Adriana. Naomi reacts with equal parts nausea and sedation (seriously, homegirl knows how to emote) and principal gives her detention for the rest of the semester.

Matthews%20Cowboy.jpg

Naomi, this is serious: Does my cowboy stance make me look young enough to bag a high school girl?

Speaking of Adriana, she's across town being dropped off at the fake version of Promises by her mother. When Adriana questions how they are able to afford her going there, mom brushes off the question and asks Adriana to get better, for her. It's the least she could do since she messed everything else up.

I hate this show. I'm so completely disappointed. As an avid fan of the original, I genuinely believe they shouldn't have used the name if there would not be ONE similar aspect. The beauty of the original was the bond between the main characters--I can't even figure out the relationship between these people. I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't knwo where the hell the Navid and Adrianna thing came from! Naomi is NOT NEARLY as endearing as Kelly was and Annie is nothing compared to Brenda.

The only characters I actually enjoy are Dixon (because there's nothing to hate) and Silver, who REALLY has Brian Austin Green Eyes. She's talented and you know her back story. Naomi's mom has crazy eyes, I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned and Naomi is just NOT attractive.

The show is boring. There's no lesson in it (which is ALSO what was endearing about the original--the cheese factor). I'm not sure who is directed at. The characters are too young to be 18-34 and the material is too much for 'tweens. Once I find out Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth are done and there is NO one else coming back--I'm checking out of this show. Boo!

I don't necessarily think they should have named it after the original either, but only because people are constantly comparing them and they're totally different, not because the original was actually good. Don't get me wrong, I watched every freakin' season of it, and I still love it, but going back and watching now (which I've done)...it was awful. Super cheesy, ridiculous after school special stuff, some truly terrible acting. I think I must have remembered it as something much better than what it was.

It was good on cheese factor and I was probably hm.. 13/14 when it came out. I don't think I was a prude but I learned some lessons from it. It didn't SUPPORT what teenagers were going through...it talked about coping with the issues. Like, why did this show open with oral sex in a car--and they never get in trouble for it? It would be nice to see consequences on TV once in a while. It really makes kids think that their behavior is OK--if not the norm and THAT is ok. I think it was GREAT that Donna was a virgin because ANY girl that liked her MIGHT not feel so weird about being a virgin.
I mean, at least they took the 'drinking at the bar' thing out because the sophmore's in MY school weren't getting into bars to drink with teachers. Drinking, fine. But CONSEQUENCES might be good too.
To me its a REALLY awful way to take a bad show and get ratings by using an old name. I wouldn NOT have hated the old formula.

I think the original was so good because there were a lot of taboo subjects covered. It seemed like a lot of subject matter that hadn't previously been available to teens/20 somethings. This version is so boring because they refuse to think out of the box. They even messed up what could have been a great story line with Adriana's OD. Much more interesting if she would have died or something more drastic like that.

I

I'm loving Ryan & Kim. I hope Kelly and the McKid come back WITH DYLAN but I know that's asking too much. I hope they keep RDB around awhile. And isn't it time we saw Tori??

jakesmom:

what happened to the 90210 recaps???????

dani2526:

I miss these recaps, too!!! What will we do without them? :)

nyonma:

I agree with the first post. Why call is 90210 if you aren't going to keep one similar aspect?

I guess they just wanted the publicity because the show could have been called something totally different.

I agree in 90210 the main characters were friends and in this one they are not a whole group. They are divided. The characters are not attractive in terms rooting or liking them. The only person I like is Kelly and Silver
