Ah, the penultimate episode of Amazing Race 9 -- and what an episode it was! Interesting challenges, intense rivalries, convoluted transportation, exotic locales, an exciting ending, and... monkeys! Lots and lots of monkeys! And to be fair to the other critters of the episode, crickets and grasshoppers too! But they were dead. Yes, it was an episode with a little bit of something for everyone, and for the first time all season, we had our first food endurance challenge. This was great news for me because a) I love the food endurance challenges, and b) after last week's non-elimination round, I was ready for some high-stakes racing again.
This week's episode began with an ominous sign: crocodiles attacking each other in the Australian Outback! Might this allude to increased bitterness between Mojo and the Hippies? Or was this some small homage to Survivor, which invariably opens each show with images of critters at war (and/or crabs scampering across a beach). We couldn't contemplate this issue too long because suddenly the race was starting up again, with Ray and Yolanda emerging from the Pit Stop first. Their clue told them to fly to lovely Bangkok, which was currently the host city to Tyra Banks' gaggle of beauties on America's Next Top Model. That meant that at 8 PM last night, if you turned to UPN or CBS, all you'd see was racing and Thailand. I guess this was Les Moonves' master plan: "This May for sweeps, I want one thing: Thailand. Make it happen!"
Actually, a crossover episode would have been totally awesome. We were so close, if you think about it. With the models running around on their go-sees, I half expected Phil Keoghan to show up at any point and make them go bunjee jumping or something. But now I'm rambling. The whole point of this was that Raylonda was headed to Bangkok, and once they were there, they'd have to take a taxi to a bus terminal and then take a bus ninety-seven miles to a city and THEN find a three-spire pagoda, which, by the way, happened to be the home to a whole grip of sacred monkeys. Yes, this was going to be a good episode.
Well, Ray and Yolanda hit the road, but not before donating some pants to BJ. For those of you who missed it, last week's episode ended with BJ and Tyler arriving last on a non-elimination leg. That meant they had to hand over all their possessions and could only wear the clothes on their back. Unfortunately for BJ, he had shed his shoes and pants just prior to the Pit Stop (don't ask), which meant he'd have to attack this leg of the race in a more vagabond state than usual.
Luckily, even though the Hippies had sworn enemies in Team Mojo, the others had compassion. Not only did Raylonda donate pants, but Jeremy and Eric also gave up a pair of sandals. "It's a nice thing to do just because he's a person," they said. Aww. That was sweet. Plus, they knew that now they could always ask for a favor later. And you know what I'm talking about:
Anyway, Jeric were out of the Pit Stop next, and they looked quite sharp, I might add. That tuxedo t-shirt -- always a classic. They opened their clue, and I'm sure their heart skipped a beat or two when they read the word "Bangkok." Sadly, it was merely a geographical location, not a command, and so their brief excitement turned into forlorn sadness.
Two seconds later, Monica and Joseph headed off to the airport, but unlike the other teams, they didn't offer one iota of help to the Hippies. Monica explained, "They're trying to play mind games with us... we're not going to take it." Literally. They can't take mind games. They don't have MINDS.
The Hippies emerged last, and not only did BJ have Yolanda's sexy spandex pants and Jeric's flimsy sandals, but he also scored some other items thanks to the random lost and found at the Pit Stop. Tyler then tried to put a positive spin on the situation by saying, "We've proven that we can keep bouncing back and keep getting back into the front of the pack." Well, not really. If you have to keep bouncing back, doesn't that mean that you're just always falling to the rear?
Anyway, BJ then decided to talk some smack by saying, "Mojo has a date with not being in the race anymore!" Ah, well stated. Might you be interested in auditioning for Yo Momma? You'd be a natural.

LOL @ Ray needing to calm down.
I'm pissed that the Hippies are in the finals. How I loathe their mugging for the camera. Hoping and praying for Jeric win. Boys have been owning this game. It'd be more than deserved and good Karma for the Hippies who feel they 'deserve' to win more.

I was pulling for MOJO. I am a contractor to, and I always thought they were pretty damn smart. I don't know what the big deal was about this Booda thing anyway. Anyway, I think Monica is HOT and Joseph had better watch out, or I'll do a "change order" if you know what I meen. Don't be MOJO hater's! They will have beautiful children. But if Monica wants to have mine..here I am!

One more thing....Yolanda is hot too, but I still like the Weaver family. And Fran looked pretty good too. Come to think of it, Lorie is hot too, and the pinks...mmmm. Like JERIC, I love being a single man on the hunt!!

No, no, no we love the PhilPants (TM) just the way we are!
Great screencraps and recap, B-Side.
Evil laughs of glee here at all the MoJo screw-ups, and actual applause at the Philimination.
Jeric annoy me. They're too damn lazy. MoJo are honestly stupid -- Jeric choose to be, wasting their lives. And Eric ain't gonna be able to chase the club girls/boys much longer -- his carefully-constructed haircut/gel/style isn't holding up in these areas away from first-class hair product. That bald spot is growing faster than Greenland is melting.
So, hippies winning after almost being eliminated twice would be a good story, as would the lurve birds Raylonda, who I hope can live in the same city and drive their Benzes together. Maybe Ray would actually smile?
(Poster above me? Eesh.)

Any episode with moneys and the hippies in first place is a good one for me. That pic of the penis monkey was hysterical. You too can have a monkey jump on your crorch if you're holding a big can of Pringles.
So glad to see whiny, crybaby Monica go. I don't know how hw put up with her for that long. God forbid she tries natural childbirth!
GO HIPPIES!!!!

Gold leafing isn't all that hard, by the way.
I want Raylonda to win. I hate BJ and Tyler (I refuse to call them Hippies because they're NOT hippies) and Jeric. I want them to lose.
I think it would be great if, for once, all three teams arrived at the last pit stop at once, and they had to bicycle or kayak or whatever to the finish line and they were seconds apart.

This episode couldn't have played out any better if I had written it myself. No golden gnome for you, Jeric! And no chance at the million for you, Mojo! Yay, Karma! And just for eating that GI-NORMOUS bowl 'o bugs, I am now whole-heartedly behind the hippies for the win. GO HIPPIES!

Good riddance to bad Mojo.
That was a freakin' ton of grasshoppers and crickets! It was the never ending bowl. If you're allowed to puke then it's not that hard. But still. I'm happy for the hippies. Is that a candy necklace on Tyler in the human train picture? Those were never as good as I wanted them to be. Kind of like malted milk balls. You only ate them because there was no other candy in a 50 mile radius.
Ray is the Anti-prizewinner from Regis and Kelly. Does anything raise this dude's heart rate? What will he do if they win? Sigh and look at his feet? For some reason I can't help but wonder what kind of a lover he is. Maybe it's because he's hottie hot hot.

I still can't believe what MoJo said at the end. The Race improved and strengthened their relationship? Really? How bad was it before? And they're gonna get married? OK, good luck with that.

I don't know about anyone else, but I was laughing so hard during this entire show. Mostly at BJ. Those spandex pants ... his crack during the fast forward that he thought he ordered pad thai ... his reaction at not getting the golden gnome ("oh, a regular gnome"). Maybe it was just me, but he was cracking me up.
Oh, and B-Side:
"Well, with Jeric already off to visit Phil, this meant that the show was gonna come down to Raylonda vs. Mojo. Or, to put it more simply, Good vs. Evil." Brilliant! I too was worried that Raylonda would be eliminated and yelled at my tv the entire time they were looking for the entrance. I SO didn't want to see Mojo beat them to the Philster.

Right now, I kinda don't care who wins because MoJo's been Philiminated.
Part of me wants Raylonda to win, just to see Ray's excitement at gettin' the big bucks.
My sentimental fave are the the hippies just because they don't seem like they're part of the species "Stupidus Americanus." I have to hand it to them for at least learning a few words of a native language and not making stupid comments like those clods Kendra or Monica.
And even if the AGD (Ambiguously Gay Duo) wins, that's not so bad because they played the game for what it is - a race!
One thing I noticed was that this season didn't seem so "cut-throat." The fighting at the airport ticket counters wasn't so bitchy, I thought I saw some teams shaking hands, and the love shown between Jeric and the Hippies in that infamous shirtless group photo is classic.

While I'm still cheering on the Hippies, I can honestly say I'll be happy with whoever wins. It's a good thing, but just how good depends on whoever wins Survivor this Sunday (Yay, Cirie! Boo, Terry!)

How did I feel about this episode, B-Side? ECSTATIC! I was so glad MoJo was philiminated. As for the other three, I would prefer Jeric win but I could live with any of the three teams winning. I don't think I've ever been able to say that about TAR before.
Lizardqueen, you're right, that is a candy necklace and I agree about them and malted milk balls. So many better candies to eat in this world!
I agree, GiadaFan. It might be worth it to see Ray's reaction if they won.

Haha, another great recap B-Side.
"If it made her feel any better, Joseph wiped her tears away... with the armpit of his t-shirt. I'm sure she really appreciated that." - That was brilliant! I totally noticed that too and was incredibly grossed out.
Bluebell: I also thought the funniest moments were with BJ. The spandex pants and the striptease that went awry...ha! Great television. I also thought his pad thai comment was hilarious too. The worst eating challenge though was when the wrestlers (a few season back) had to drink that blood. Ugh, vampire much?

Buh bye, Mojo. Great final 3, I'd be happy if any of them one. Even the frats. Although I don't care to see their idiotic lazy ways validated with a $1000000 paycheque, I can't deny they've run a good race, and haven't been negative or mean-spirited at all. I'm kinda pulling for the hippies, although I'd be really happy with a Rayolanda win. It's all good.
Great episode too. Those monkeys rocked the house!! Shaking the crap out of the cluebox, engaging in some frottage with Eric, sabotaging the roadblock. Awesome stuff. And was I the only one who was really impressed with the end results of those ceremonial monkey feasts.

As happy as I am to see Mojo gone, I did like how nice Joseph was to Monica when she was beating herself up after dropping all those pots. He seems like a decent guy.
It's a good thing that Phil doesn't have any physically demanding tasks to perform, those pants couldn't take any strenuous movements.

zoobabe and realityTV4me, that makes 3 of us. it was the ONLY thing that had me rooting for mojo. although i think b-side is definitely being harsh comparing them to freddy and kendra, who are tied with flo as the most obnoxious racers ever.
for me, the grossest eating challenge was that spicy soup that had everyone puking as rebecca guzzled it in one gulp. that was pure craziness.
go hippies!

YAY! Mojo's been philiminated!! What a terrific episode!! This has turned out to be a terrific season.
I missed Jo's tear wipe with the arm pit of his t-shirt. But I do remember that the one side of his t-shirt was dirt encrusted from the detour. Does anyone know if he wiped away with that side?
I caught the last few minutes of Finish line and MoHo were still bitching over the yield (which ultimately had no effect on their demise). They complained that the hippies had to park the car...Ah you've already heard them whine about it. Even though they said they are now friends with them know, I sensed that they still hold a grudge on the hippies.
I found myself yelling at the hippies when they contemplated quitting the FF. I'm glad they stuck it out. Bj's agonizing comment comparing their torturous ordeal to a turkish prison was pretty good too.
I reccommend that everyone check out Phil's blog on the TAR website. It's great to read about his take on the race, and what happened to all those crayfish from a couple of challenges ago.
I imagined that the stench of BJ reached that lady as soon as he lifted his shirt for her, which would explain her sudden change in her chanting.
Whoever compared MoHo to Freddie/Kendra is way off. Jo was 'innocently stupid', whearas Kendra was ignorant, intolerant, racist and stupid. Flo was just a whiny bitch who did less than any other single racer in the history of the show who made it past the fourth leg of the race.

I was in class on Wednesday night and set the VCR wrong - I recorded "Deal or No Deal" instead of TAR, and have been waiting for this recap ever since.
I had been cheering for Mojo a bit, they have been turned into the villains of this season only because there isn't an actual bad team left. They could be annoying, but they weren't that bad. I was also cheering for them because they are from the same city where my brother lives, so there.
I'm not sure who the cheer for now. Jeric is growing on me, as scary as that sounds. I just wish I could have watched the episode - but the screenshots and recaps are awesome, thanks tvgasm!

I'll have to admit that the spicy soup-eating challenge was pretty disgusting. Especially the part where the one team member (I forget who now) kept puking back into his own bowl and then had to eat it to finish the challenge!!! Wait, I think that was Freddy who kept having to eat his own puke. Wow, that was good tv. But, for me, the worst eating challenge had to be that time the race went to Vietnam (I think it was Vietnam) where one detour choice was to eat the local delicacy -- live octopus!! Chip and Reiken chose that detour and while dining on the "delicacy," one of the octopus suctioned onto Chip/Reiken's teeth (again, forget exactly which one). *shriek!* That challenge would've been extremely difficult to do. Although, eating a huge bowl of fried grasshoppers, intact, would also have been pretty hard to stomach. Get it, stomach?

#12-yes! Ray is totally Crabman!
Here's what I don't get about Mo: the woman gets stoked to do things most people consider challenging because it's scarey, like bungee jumping and skydiving. But give her a task involving CARRYING something & watch out, it's the hardest thing EVER! WTF??
I'm pulling for Crabman, I mean, Raylonda. Did ya' see they were a bit affectionate this week? I'm betting Ray gave up some luvin' to get her to be quiet about the whole "damn bridge" incident.

Very happy with the results, B-Side. MoJo is out, no chance at that $$$. The Amazing Race totally makes me believe in karma.
Hey, Ray & Yolanda did kiss (peck) this week! That's gotta count for something on the Ray's emotion-o-meter, no?? Anyways, I'm fine with any team that wins but I'd be happier with Ray & Yolanda as winners even though they haven't dominated the rest of the race. I've been rooting for them all season long and they now made it to the finals! I don't know if they can actually win but they are damn close to doing that. You go RaYo!
*B-Side, more shots of PhilPackage, please! :)

Monkeys attacking clue box = Classic!
I was completely floored when Monica dropped not one, not two, but TEN pots. It was like watching a nightmare, only someone else was having it.
I'm relieved to see them go, though. Joseph never really bothered me, but Monica just got on my nerves with her whining! "Jooooseeeeph" will forever be engrained in my mind.
I'm excited for the finale, since the Hippies and the Jeric are so good at racing. I have a suspicion that Raylonda will improve their racing style and prove a threat, too. I hope so, because I'm rooting for them. Yolanda's sass and Ray's endearing emotionless state makes me love 'em so much!
Another good episode, and another good recap!
