The producers of The Amazing Race spent a lot of time picking out the teams to compete in this All Stars edition. Obviously they want the toughest, most competitive and most driven teams to be their All Stars, right? They only picked the best of the best. The most amazing (since amazing is, after all, in their name). The competitors who would make those of us sitting at home eating an entire pizza by ourselves feel bad. Right?
But they picked Drew. And I no longer feel bad about the entire pizza (although I do feel kind of bad about the entire carton of Ben & Jerry's I followed it up with). Let's find out why....
There is very little about Drew that says "All Star". Drew gets outrun by a little person. He trips over his own feet. He doesn't know Ecuador from Peru. He whines a lot about his back and his legs. He doesn't know how to change a flat. Honestly, if this is who qualifies for All Stars, I can hardly wait to see Peter O'Toole competing against Dustin Diamond in The Amazing Race Celebrity Edition.
It is just moments into this episode of TARAS before All Star Drew has another problem. The altitude in Quito, Ecuador is making him sick and he has to have oxygen administered four times.
But the race stops for no altitude, and certainly not for big babies, so soon it's time for Romber to depart. The clue sends the teams to Santiago, Chile. Once there, they must travel 12 miles by taxi to a copper mining company. Before they go, Rob takes time to announce to the camera that he wants the other teams to be preoccupied by them, because thinking about Romber will distract them from the Race. Note this as time Number One that Rob discusses other teams - we'll be keeping count for a reason!
Other teams depart as well, and Eric warns Danielle about falling down the hill. Aw, nice, right? Nope, he actually tells her that if she fell down the hill like Humpty Dumpty, he'd start calling her "Humpty Dumbass". Eric then tells the camera that he doesn't think that he has any problems in his relationship with Danielle. Dr. Phil agrees. His office issued the following statement: "Any relationship where the man calls the woman dumbass is healthy. They should get married and have 75 dumbass babies immediately."
Soon after, Mirna and Shmirna are off too. Last week, I was quite confused about Shmirna's name - Charla, Charna, Shmarla, Shmarna. I really can't keep it all straight. So they will now be known as Mirna and Shmirna, because I can remember names that rhyme. They might also need to be known as Team Crazypants, but more on that later.
Mirna and Shmirna take off, with the insightful comment that "It might be chilly in Chile." I am pretty sure that Chile will have to pay The Amazing Race royalties when they adopt that as their national slogan. Just to get a piece of the action myself, I plan to copyright "You Canda in Uganda", and "It's always Wowee in Malawi".
Mirna and Shmirna decide that they are going to follow Dave and Mary. At this point I was wondering if Mirna and Shmirna had watched last season, because if I were on TARAS, I wouldn't have aligned with Kentucky. It seems to me that while Mary and Dave really benefited from the alliances that they formed, the other teams didn't get much out of it for themselves.
But it quickly became clear that there is a very good reason that I am not on TARAS, and that reason is that I am too dumb. Because as they're following Kentucky, Mirna and Shmirna get suck in a watery ditch of a pothole. And Dave and Mary quickly pitch in to tow them out. Which is the right thing to do. And is also the right answer to the question WWCBD? So yay for the return of the Kentucky we know and love. Even Mirna is grateful, and announces that they owe Kentucky.
Drew and Kevin are the last to leave. Drew manages to slip after just a few steps. Which I think, according to TARAS rules, makes Drew Humpty Dumbass. They get to their car and immediately begin to bicker about whether or not Kevin hit Drew's shoulder. At first this made me tense, because it wasn't the kind of bickering that is funny, like Rob and Kimberly last season.

Haha, I had just tuned in this week and decided that I cannot give up on TAR. The show is too exciting and your recaps are too funny.
I hate to say it, but I think Romber have a GOOD chance of winning this thing. Even though they were the second to last team to arrive in Chili, they still somehow manage to make it to first place, again! Impressive. Also, I love Amber calling Rob on his "silliness". More like stupidity.
Also, Eric reminds me of someone famous, but it's late and I can't think of the person right now. Hopefully, it'll come to me.

This was a great episode. The days of TAR greatness are back.
Awesomeness, you stated: "It seems pretty consistently that Dave has some good suggestions and Mary ignores him. So let's keep our eyes on that and hope Mary gets a little nicer to Dave." I agree and this happened ALL of last season as well. The dumb hag won't learn, though. This has actually become rather annoying to me since she didn't learn a thing from the last race. She is constantly referencing their previous race but has made not one comment about her husband being correct a few times more than herself during BOTH races. It was nice to see them "return to form", though, and be the nice team that Rosie bought a house for. Nevertheless, I am still ready for them to get the boot.
I felt more sorry for Kevin during this leg than I did for the physically ill, Drew. Yes, the elevation (9400 feet! -- 4000 more than Denver) can do anybody in; but that wasn't the only complaint Drew had. I didn't understand why he simply didn't book a flight to New York when he was in Quito. Maybe he just kind of wanted to go to Chile so he continued to "race."
This is the first time I actually enjoyed Amber in my entire life (since being "introduced" to reality contestant anyway). I was so glad she said that Rob looked silly (actually like an idiotic ass). I cannot believe Rob actually bitched about someone getting in line at another opening window just because he wasn't the one doing it. If I am not mistaken, didn't Eric & Danielle arrive at the airport a few places ahead of Romber anyway? So who should have been in line first to begin with, Rob? I can only imagine the verbal berating Amber got at home while this episode aired when Rob saw Amber so politely help the ChaChas with the boardroom task. He is such a douche.
Ian is quite the detective, isn't he? At least he admitted to not performing well in that task. He would have belittled his wife, though, had she performed so dismally.
Seriously, what the hell were Joyce and Eric doing in that boardroom? Did they not once notice the other teams writing stuff down while looking at a picture on the wall? Eric was baffled that there was no "H" but wouldn't you still fib and take a chance with it? Nobody else returned to the room after looking at THAT picture; he may not be a Humpty, but he sure was a Dumbass in this challenge.
Ohmigod -- the Mirna/Charla meltdown. Don't cars usually follow one another on a two-lane highway? I don't think the BQs were being too irrational in offering to pay the poor (both literally and figuratively) cab driver to draw them a map. He would have probably enjoyed the week's worth of groceries the BQs payment would have provided him for drawing them a rudimentary map. Instead this poor, poor, poor impoverished Chilean had to endure the hell that is Mirna's wrath. This man probably needs therapy now. Is there a term for her behavior? It goes well beyond melodrama. She needs to be slapped -- lethally.
I was baffled by David & Mary's choice to not use the backhow at the mine. Isn't this the one challenge that David should have been able to excel in? He wouldn't have had to read or count ... he'd simply have to mine. Mary could have at least picked up a wrench and helped screw some of those nuts onto that tire instead of giving her hard-working husband the play-by-play commentary about each of the other teams finishing before they did because BOTH people were actually doing it. DUMB ... I am pretty certain she did herself some votin' for Taylor Hicks last year.
I still cannot wait to see Romber miss up so horribly that it is beyond CBS's powers to get them on the mat first. Can't the million dollars SHE won and the big chunk of money they are both making for whoring themselves out in their other reality TV show buy them the same prizes they are winning on this show?
This episode will probably do wonders for the Chilean tourism industry. The ONLY two things in Chile are environmentally destructive copper mines and barren landscapes. I am going to call my travel agent tomorrow!
Yikes this is long, I had better shut it up ... I am talking more than a ranting Mirna.

Goodness gracious, how far this site has fallen.

Awesomeness, your recap was spot on hilarious again. Congrats.
Still dislike Mary like I did in Race 10. And, Team Crazypants are as bad now as they were the first time around. However, I hope they don't get eliminated too soon purely for the comedy they add to the show.

Great Recap! You had me laughing out loud at my desk. "Team crazypants" fits them to a tee. I've never seen two people act more like drama queens in my life (and I know quite a few), when she shoved her pocketbook in the cab drivers arms and started crossing herself, I was rolling on the floor laughing. Those two will keep me watching TAR.

Great recap. However you mixed up Mirna and Shmirna for practically the whole recap. For the record Mirna is the Little one - Shmirna (Charla) is the crazy one.

Actually Charla (shmirna) is the little person.
I didnt watch last season, but I do not like Team Kentucky. Mary got so mad at Kevin for eavesdropping, yet she was the only dumbass to read the clue out loud. And she should not be mad at team crazy pants. They were almost the last 2 teams. Did she expect them to get eliminated just to repay the favor???

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is the last possible reality show Rob and Amber will do. They need to get off my TV screen.

Oh wow, this episode was great!
Mirna's total breakdown with the cab driver made for some good tv. Seriously, where did that even come from? "What do you WANT from MEEEEEEEEE?" If she had added a couple of 'babes' to her tirade, I would have believed it was Kimberly yelling at Rob.
Oh! And does anyone else notice that whenever they are in a Spanish speaking country, Mirna adds an Spanish accent to her voice?
I love Romber. Truly, I do. They are a really good team, they work well together, they play off of each other, and they make you laugh! I want them to win. I want Mary/David to remember WWCBD, and I want Mirna and Shmirna o.u.t. Though they do make good tv. As long as they don't win the money, I think I'll be okay.
:D

"Are you taking photographs of your TV screen for your screencaps? Goodness gracious, how far this site has fallen."
To be fair, it takes a while to learn the technique and format that the gasm-faithful have grown used to. This was a valiant effort ... and still, quite funny. Do you expect a Virginia Woolf overnight?
Awesomeness, I am hard to please (people usually bitch at me for correcting grammar) but you did a fine job. Experience is all that you need because you do have the necessary talents to blog. It was nice to see you up the snark. I wish you luck and give you a nice pat on the back.

Regarding Mirna's "spanish" accent - she does that no matter what country she's in, at least she did in her original season. It doesn't matter if she's in Chile or Poland, she busts out the Speedy Gonzalez accent wherever she goes.
For some reason, she thinks SHOUTING english words using a Spanish accent will all of a sudden make non-english speaking people perk up and listen. Idiot. I seem to remember that she supposedly speaks 5 languages, but I guess Spanish isn't one of them, because apart from "rapido," I really didn't see her putting spanish to use all that much.

Great recap Awesomeness!
Rob's arrogance just grates on me...I LOVED seeing Amber put him down a bit. Can you imagine LIVING with that guy?
Keep up the good work! It was hilarious!

Hi, guys! Thanks for the feedback!
I too think that Romber has a pretty good chance at this. Love 'em or hate 'em, they're good at the game. I had a change of heart with Dr. Will in BBAS -- you almost had to accept a bit of arrogance because he was so darn good at the game. And maybe the same will happen for me with Romber. And if not, at least they're fun to make fun of!
And you can't deny that Team Crazypants is some good TV! I've been looking for a video of the incident so everyone can see it, but apparently it hasn't hit YouTube yet.
As for the screencaps... I don't have the technology that B-Side and J-Unit do. And this time some problems with the TV, so I actually had to do the screencaps from my computer. Hopefully they'll be better next time!
YAY for TARAS!!

Great recap Awesomeness! OK, why the heck did Mary say the clue out loud for Kevin to hear?? DUH! And then she was mad because he "eavesdropped" ? LOL!
Love them or hate them I think Romber play the game extremely well, and I think they'll probably win. But you never know.
Thank God Drew got eliminated. I couldn't stand anymore of his whining. I half expected him to go sulk in the corner with his blankie. I know he was not feeling well, but damn! Poor Kevin. That was hilarious though when Drew almost ran him over! What was he thinking? TARAS rocks.

Awesomeness - i admit I was a bit skeptical at first when someone was taking over recapping the greatest reality show ever - but dammit you get kudos, kudos and more kudos. I really love reading your take and this week was hil-ar-i-ous. Keep it up!!
As for TARAS - hate Romber, really really believe that it's uchenna carrying that team..damn joyce...charla and mirna - well what else can be said, but i want them to stick around for a little bit, hoping for another classic moment like "where's the beef" - oh yeah on mighty mouse's back or my fave, Charla and the Chocolate Factory episode - that was hilarious.
Watch out for my guys too - Os and Danny flying under the radar with 2 2nd place mat finishes. They finished 4th last time and might be my alltime fave team...and a hell of a lot better reps for us 'mos than the Guidos. I cringe and hiss everytime the Guidos show up on screen...does that make me a bad gay boy?????
Go Cha-Cha-Cha!
Again, Awesomeness - you're pretty awesome

Great recap! You did say that"At this point I wondered if Mirna and Shirman watched last season" I think they ran this race before last season was broadcast. Also, did you notice that Amber told Eric that there was an "H" on a pen. Then he got mad because he couldn't get more information from them!

I was wondering why the screenshots looked different. Then it dawned on me what it was a photo of the TV. Nothing wrong with that, it actually adds a bit of artistic blur, like using a Holga camera or something.
Earlier poster said "Eric was baffled that there was no "H" but wouldn't you still fib and take a chance with it?" I forget if it was him or Jeremy that got stumped at the final roadblock in his season's "order the flags" task. Either way, not much brain power up there...
Also loved Rob getting his thong in a twist when Eric stole his idea to cut in line. It's a freakin' RACE retahd, of course someone will try to jump the line. Imagine him at the Stah Mahket back in Boston, where someone waltzes into the recently opened checkout line - scary thought.
I commend the little person for her gutsiness, but that whining has got to stop. Secretly, I still love the Beauty Queens.

Awesomeness, nice recap. Definately better than last weeks and I would say I laughed as much as I did during the recaps last season. Keep it up!
How did Drew and Kevin make it so far last time they raced? Poor Kevin.
I hope Mirna Shmirna stay around until the final 3 because they are so funny to watch!
