Recap: American Idol: Hollywood Up To No Good

judges021407

American Idol shifted away from auditions and into its less popular Hollywood stages Tuesday night, and while the ratings tend to dip during this time, I usually find these rounds to be some of the more interesting. Unlike any other part of the show, we get tension, bickering, and high drama. Usually. Last year's Brittenum twins are still forever complaining in my brain. However, I couldn't help but feel like this part of the process was totally rushed this season. If memory serves me correctly (oh, who am I kidding -- I looked it up), last year, we had one full hour dedicated to the solo Hollywood round and one full hour for the group competition. This time, both phases were hastily crammed together, preventing us from getting to know more "characters" and therefore distancing us from drama. Plus, the judges' commentary was clipped, brief, and forgettable, and besides that, I have lingering questions: what happened to two of the frontrunners from the auditions -- Ebony and Jenry? AND WHERE, GOOD GOD, WAS CAROL BAYER SAGER???

As the hour began, we learned that day 1 of the Hollywood rounds would be spent with the girls singing their hearts out. The guys, meanwhile, were off cleaning up litter on the 101 Freeway. Or so I assumed. Unlike last year when we were treated to heartwearming glimpses of people cavorting on the beach, FOX denied us the chance to see "how the other half lived." It was all about the singing. Just the singing.

The way this would work was that hopefuls would take the stage in groups of six and each sing solos for the judges, lasting about thirty seconds each. First up was Jory Steinberg, the girl with the nagging sense of entitlement -- probably stemming from her being best friends with Queen Elizabeth. She made an instant splash, mostly because she was dressed almost identically to Paula. Needless to say, that's not a good thing.

Anyway, Jory sang her song, and I didn't think she sounded particularly great, but from the auditions, I remembered that Simon was highly enthusiastic about her. She was definitely staying. Less likely of moving forward was Christen Itam, some girl who managed to destroy my ears for the two seconds that we saw her on TV. Anyway, once everyone in Jory's group had sang, the girls stood in front of the judges who informed them that they'd all be going home. HA! Excellent. Poor Jory Steinberg. She'll have plenty to cry about next time she visits Queen Elizabeth at Balmoral Castle and Estate.

Perhaps the best part of this unceremonious elimination was one girl who made the embarrassing mistake of cheering with excitement, only to realize that she had jumped the gun. As a result, her already strange noise abruptly morphed into a moan of sorrow, which was probably only slightly less humiliating than waving back at someone who was waving at the person behind you.

Nevertheless, Simon kicked the ladies while they were down, saying, "None of you are any good. It was an absolutely terrible start to the day. Sorry. No originality." He then added, "We're looking for the best of the best who can win this competition and then be saddled with a generic, lame, and forgettable single."

Meanwhile, in the audience, one girl remarked, "They just cut the whole first row!" -- as if there was something inherently special about the first row that made it supremely uncuttable. Besides, it would have been no less astounding had the judges cut six people over the course of two rounds instead of one. That's just some old fashioned availability heuristics at work! That's right. I took social psych senior year. Feel free to bask in the reflected glory...

We then went to a commercial, and when we returned, Columbian thrush Perla was sauntering off an airplane, arriving in Los Angeles for her big shot at stardom. Proving to be significantly more annoying than her already annoying audition could ever bely, Perla mugged for cameras, acting as if she were the queen of Los Angeles International Airport. Needless to say, the other grouchy travelers were far from impressed.

perla021407
"I am The Perla!"

Anyway, we then found Perla singing "Hips Don't Lie" -- again -- and even though she was super annoying, the judges still pushed her through (although, not before Simon told her to focus more on singing and less on personality). For whatever reason, this caused Perla to cry, saying, "I can't help but be myself." Yes, your annoying, annoying self.

Fast show and a fast recap B-side! Nice turnaround!

I did notice that one of the girls cut in the second (group) round was Robyn Troup, who just won the spot singing with Justin Timberlake at the Grammy awards. I guess she did okay after her AI disappointment, b/c she did very well in her big moment and won a new car too. Take that Simon!

clemsongirl [TypeKey Profile Page]:

so the guy who invited the crying girl to sing in his group...I know him and he is a douche. And apparently this show tells everyone they make the top 24-cause he was told he did like a month ago, and they just brought them all back out to Hollywood and told a group that they in fact did not make the cut-this would be the group that that guy was in. I thought that was interesting and kind of embarrassing for those people-he told alot of people that he made it and now he has to tell them that he didn't-which is funny cause he is not a nice guy. His argument is that they didn't want overwhelmingly good talent so they just kept all of the mediocre talent. sore loser huh? ok, b-side-I love your recaps-I never laugh as hard as I do reading these.

HoneyBunny [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I like Antonella. And, hey Amanada - God must have gotten Baylie's email about you being 'bad' and all.

I felt sorry for Matt but I suspect his Mom would have been like Dina Lohan and we certainly don't need another one of those!

ZB - saw the Robin too and was surprised that they didn't edit her out of the show...

thanks b-side, especially for the "walking on air"

I was making dinner and didn't pay too much attention to the show. This preliminary stuff drags on too long.

But anyways, that was really uncomfortable everytime that Matt guy was on talking about his folks. Thank god he's gone.

The Perla was a one-trick pony.

Sundance was awful AND forgot his lines. How did he get through?

Sorry to see the Indian girl go home. She was cute and without all the attitude.

ragontona [TypeKey Profile Page]:

The girl who managed to destroy your ears in two seconds was actually a local girl (for me) who we were kinda rooting for.

But yeah, gotta admit, she wasn't good.

But she's hot.

Good lord man, get some sleep!

I thought it was interesting that Perla's accent would come and go as needed.

cansnuts [TypeKey Profile Page]:

two of my favorites that I didn't spot was Denise, aka the crackbaby and the very last one to audition, the Mandisa 2007 with the 3 year old. Anybody see them? Did they move foward? I completely forget about Jenry, he was amazing and personally I'm pissed about Akron, I absolutely loved him, so much that I made my bpyfriend watch his audition. Shame he got denied Hollywood.

TVCheese [TypeKey Profile Page]:

The producers must have a reason for leaving out some of the contestants who were highlighted during the auditions... I mean, this show is #1 for a reason...But really can't figure it out! Seriously, where is Jenry!?! I even watched the "three rooms" part again on slow motion to see if I could spot him. WTF!

IJustWatch [TypeKey Profile Page]:

That Ebony chick (Frisco girl) got booted in the group.. her entire group was booted I think.

mountain_girl [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Hollywood has always been my favorite week. Remember when they really used to f*ck with them in the rooms? Good times.

I thought I saw Jenry in the second room, he was sitting on the very end. At least I hope it was him.

I was really sad to see Bailey go and that bi-atch Amanda stay. I had a good laugh when she ended up in the third room.

Rock Star [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Yeah, they went through this stage of the competition way too fast. How did they pick the random people to highlight? Because I wasn't interested in seeing a lot of those people....The beatboxer guy's group was good, probably an unfair advantage to have the beatboxing tho.
I wanted to slap Amanda after Baylie called her out and she denied going off and flirting, even though we ALL SAW IT ON TV. And then she went on to modestly state that she could have any guy she wanted back home. WTF?

I lurve Shanjaya and thought it was so cute how he seemed to be more upset than his sister was. I hope that her being gone doesn't negatively affect him. And she shouldn't have been cut, but would they ever put siblings in the Top 24?

B SIDE, PLEASE RECAP MAUI FEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

626 [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I was upset that after wasting a month of our time on auditions that they crunched the Hollywood round into 1 hour. Most of the people I looked forward to seeing in this round were not even shown!

I was disappointed to see Bailie go but more than pleased to say goodbye to the "hips don't lie" and "Rocky" girls. They were majorly annoying!

Rock Star [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Ok, so I'm a loser...I just watched the wrong door montage on YouTube, and you know the girl who wore the tie and couldn't remember the words to the Prince song? SHe was rejected then, but she was in that montage, and she had a golden ticket and yelled "thank you jesus!" What giveS??

Audge [TypeKey Profile Page]:

That's true, we totally missed out on seeing their downtime in Hollywood. Like when the boys would go out and party and then be hungover for their audition... or when that one girl got lost sightseeing and was late for her audition? *sigh* Good times...

Die_MediaWhores [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Well, there are very few things I care less about than these idiots' backstories. We could have seen a whole lot more rejection if we didn't have to hear about how Matt's mama doesn't love him. Everybody's got problems, kid.

I would like to cheer 1,000 times for cutting the craptastic Baylie from the festivities. Another season of some young un warbling country pop is not my idea of a good time.

In fact, I hope they don't have a "country" entry this year. The country fans represent about 5% of the population and 90% of the AI vote. Spare us, please.

If I don't see Jenry tonight, people will be injured.

Smoke_Rulz [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I would have DEFINITELY loved a 2-hour show tonight, but god damnit, they disappointed us again. Whatever. I listened to the tallies, too... 172 people, 114 of them were girls. God damn. That leaves 58 guys, and twice 58 is 116, so Seacrest wasn't kidding. And 56 girls moved on I believe, then it said 34 guys were eliminated. I forgot. I will be watching episode again, so whatever.

I was taken back when Jory Steinburg was eliminated right off the bat. She was one of my favorites, and I thought she did fine, especially compared to the 5 girls with her. But oh well. :/ I was also sad to see Rachel Jenkins and Sarah Burgess leave before the Hollywood round. I had soft spots for them, but, it's not too big a loss. Ashlyn Carr's elimination made me very happy, though. :D Seeing Baylie make it to group round pissed me off because I freaking hate her, even if she did sing better this time than in her audition (singing the SAME DAMN SONG, mind you, which about 300 people did too). The Nicole thing was retarded, but at least the segment was over, and hey, Melinda Doolittle is moving on! Neat! So uh... Why the hell didn't we hear her sing?

And now for the guy's part. They showed 3 people singing. What a rip. And for the record, I thought Jarrod sounded great, and Matt Sato sounded like ass. But Jarrod was eliminated. Meh. I had a soft spot for him too, but oh well. Bye Navy guy. :( I think half this segment was wasted on watching Matt Sato cry, which made me hate him more. And hate the producers more. It was nice to see Sundance and Sean moving to the group round, but again, there was more they could have shown us! Like you're complaining about Jenry, and even though I'm not gnashing teeth over him, he is definitely a good singer and it would have been nice to see him. But I certainly hope he doesn't ascend the Top 12 over looks alone or I will hate him with a passion.

Anyway, group round. Yay, Matt is gone. Yay, Perla is gone. The group with Chris and beatboxer Blake was a nice little treat, I may cut their piece out of the episode for later viewing. Sundance... I was sad to see that he had two weakish performances, since he is definitely my favorite, and I'm surprised but glad he's still moving on. I think he'll recover big time, or voters will remember this part and vote him out unceremoniously. -.- Thanks producers. And then, Antonella's group. This ordeal gave me a steaming passionate hatred for Amanda. First the whole ditching her group to flirt with guys thing, that was uncalled for. I was glad to see Baylie eliminated, but Amanda forgot her lyrics too and she moves on, and then she acts all cocky to the camera and makes the God comment. Oh HELL no. I may not like Baylie, but she was clearly not in the wrong here. And Antonella just stood there quietly. She is SO much better. I didn't care much about the cuts after that except Sean Michel, but hey, I didn't expect him to get Top 24. Again, I wish we could have heard him! And Melinda. And Jenry. And anyone else that was good!

Finally, the 3 rooms. I knew immediately that the first two rooms would be going on, because of Melinda, Chris Sligh, Sundance, Antonella, and Sanjaya. I was SUPER glad to see Amanda going home, and a little indifferent on seeing Shyamali get canned, but seeing her cry with her mother and brother was definitely sad. Oh well. I see Sanjaya getting Top 24 and probably doing reasonably well.

That's it for my massive little recap. I REALLY wish this was freaking 2 hours, and I'm very disappointed they didn't even show some of the better singers on camera, let alone show them singing. But I'm sure we'll see the likes of Melinda and Jenry's performances tomorrow, just before they're put into the Top 24.

Also, one final note: Did you notice who was singing with Sundance's group? Robyn Troup! I'm surprised you didn't screencap it, B-Side! And she got rejected, too, mwahaha.

Smoke_Rulz [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Oops, two mistakes:

I meant: "I was also sad to see Rachel Jenkins and Sarah Burgess leave before the _GROUP_ round."

And: "But I'm sure we'll see the likes of Melinda and Jenry's performances _TONIGHT_, just before they're put into the Top 24."

I need to proofread better. Or shut the hell up and not go so long-winded. :D

Autumn_Reeser_is_hot [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Wow, this must have been the best recap EVER! :D I absolutely loved it even though I didn't like the episode (just watched it) because as already many of you have argued it was way too short and we didn't even see anyone...
My favourite line:
"For whatever reason, this caused Paula to rise to her feet and clap, but I think that's mainly because she thought she saw a monkey riding across the stage on a tricycle."
Thank you for this one... *lol*
I was absolutely sad that Sean Michel had to go because he was (actually my only) favourite... I personally think tonight's episode is absolutely useless and could have been replaced by another hour of Hollywood Week... But I'm looking forward to see if ANYONE I actually liked in the audition is gonna be in the Top24...
BTW I kinda liked Perla but the group song made it pretty obvious that she just wasn't good enough...
Still grieving about Sean Michel... But at least I have a monkey in a tricycle to cheer me up ;-)

couchpotato [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I was so disappointed in this show. I just didn't get the method to their madness... But every year the show's a bit different, guess the producers are testing it out. I was beyond p'd when they didn't show Jenry! AND why does it have to be an even amount of men and women who make the top spots? I mean there's only ONE american idol right, so why not just choose the best talent?! If it happens to be 15 girls and 9 boys WHO CARES! This show is getting stupid!!!

Trent880 [TypeKey Profile Page]:

This competition is 75% about superficiality so it's ok to be superficial. For example, I hate hate hate Sanjaya's hair. It's tolerable on Peggy in Accounting but not on anyone with a Y chromosome. Just sayin'.

Miss Information [TypeKey Profile Page]:

...a pathological liar who claimed she was dating John Popper from Blues Traveler

If I was dating John Popper, I would lie and say that I wasn't.

roleepolee [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Chris Sligh is going to win this season...I'm about 99% sure.
