Previously on ANTM: Mother Renee rubbed pretty much the whole world the wrong way. Jaslene was one of only a few who rocked the photo shoot, while loveable egghead Kathleen couldn't not like fur. I can see her point. I mean, it makes you look hot. There were also 11 other crazy hos, all competing to be America's Next Top Model.
This week the girls go back to school to learn to walk. There's an obscenely large trophy, jealousy and tears. Ah, sounds just like high school.
Nighttime in LA. As the girls return to the house after panel, one of the girls declares that she misses Kathleen. I hear ya, honey! Jaslene is pumped because of all the praise for her picture at the last panel. As we hear her on the phone with her mom, it's clear she's is letting the praise go to her head.
Sad music plays as Ducky and Whitney screw around in the house. Why so glum, show? Oh, because Samantha is left out. Wah wah. Samantha tells us how she's "pretty much a country girl, and these girls are just... some of them are crazy." So true. But you're on a reality show. Run by Tyra Banks. Were you really expecting a lot of sanity?
Samantha explains that when she's stressed she likes to write in a notebook or talk on the phone with her family members. No, that's what you do here because you won't even try to like the other girls.
Samantha cries on the phone with her dad. He sounds like a level-headed guy and tells her to just have a good time with it and not to forget who she is. She promises she'll never forget who she is. This could have two results: 1, they're going to make her do something ho-ey this week, or 2, she's going to end up drunk in a hot tub making out with a male model by the end of the episode. Too bad only one of those makes fantastic TV.
TYRA MAIL! "Babies learn how to do it. Can you? Love, Tyra" The girls don't even need wunderkind Kathleen to figure out that they're going to be walking tomorrow.
A new day dawns in LA and the girls walk onto a high school football field. They are greeted by Ms. Jay in full marching band gear - including long pants - leading a real band in formation. I guess the marching band uniform is the one thing too sacred for Ms. Jay to defile with a pair of short-shorts.
The Marching Band Uniform really is a Hallowed Vestment.
Ms. Jay explains this marching band is known for their timing, precision and choreography. This is only the second episode and I can already tell you if there is one thing these girls are not, it's precise. Except Sarah. She would SOOO have obnoxiously tiny, impossibly neat handwriting. What a bitch.
The girls must change into matching shorts, polos and heels before clomping back in front of Ms. Jay, who has now changed into a school girl, complete with plaid skirt, saddle shoes and braids. I wonder if I can just ignore the hideous and make it go away.
Ms. Jay instructs them to walk the white line of the track. Felicia goes first and is right on the line the whole time. Ms. Jay mocks her because he says her hands stay at her sides the whole time, but they definitely move, shut up, Ms. Jay. Samantha is next and has a dead arm. She says she knew he was going to say that because everyone always tells her that. So why haven't you fixed it yet?
Natasha is criticized for marching. Or being a Martian, whatever. She thinks she's doing great. Mars is hot. Ms. Jay thinks Mother Renee walks too much on her heels, but she says she wasn't fierce enough because she's in a schoolgirl outfit. She's the First Selectwoman of Excusesville.
Ms. Jay wants Jaslene, aka Skelator, to take longer steps, and asks her to walk again. She however, doesn't want to listen, because she has her signature walk and thinks she'll stand out when they're on the runway. See, all this BS Tyra has been spewing at them about "signature" whatevers is totally backfiring. Mother Renee is elated that "Little Miss Cha Cha" didn't get all the praise she expected to get. What a freaking bitter Betty.

God, Renee, SHUT UP!
I talked with Samantha Thursday and she said she's going to continue to pursue modeling, and that the show's edits made her look like a loner, but that she was really friends with everyone.
Except Skeletor.

Whitney is not only plus-sized, she's busted. How did she even get in the finals? Oh yea, I forgot, Tyra has no standards. Jaslene is basically Melrose 2.0, but 50% manlier. I hate Renee with the fire of a thousand suns. See you next Tuesday, Renee

Jaslene makes my stomach turn. She really is insanely ugly without all the makeup on.
I think maybe you meant Sandra Bernhard instead of Sarah Bernhardt in the comparison with Brittany? I see it too.

I'm really scared for Mother Renee's kid. This seems like the meanest, mosty petty, unhappy woman on earth. Have a nice childhood development phase with all that vitrol, kid.
Natasha is too entertaining- she must stay!
Whitney needs to lay off of dartmouth. I went there and i'm sick of hearing her talk about it.

I mean Natasha isn't that great, but I wanted to slap Jay when he kept bitching about how hard it was to work with Natasha. Maybe next time don't give her the hardest one for a non-English speaker to understand! And then when she asks for guidance as to what sort of look she should have Jay just rebuffs her and gives up. At least she was trying to put the stupid task in a context she could understand.
It's not like models are universally known for their grasp of the English language (how well do you think Heidi Klum would have done Teacher's Pet when she first started working in the US, especially with Jay's oh-so-helpful direction).
I felt this way about Kathleen too. She is admittedly clueless, but I really don't think that failing to understand a stupid high-concept photo shoot the likes of which are only seen in the context of ANTM is really any sort of means for judging a model.

Awesome recap Krank! Much better than last week! Or so I thought at least. And yay for screencaps and less pages.
I must nitpick though - spellcheck, please.
Okay sorry, just ignore me. I'm one of those annoying people who is obsessive about spelling and grammar. And I was harsh on you last week. But much improved! You have the makings of a J-Unit or a B-Side in you!
Again, great recap!

To Ms. Spell and Grammar Check (aka, georgiababe), it's grammatically incorrect to begin a sentence with "But." BUT we'll forgive you this time...just like you managed to forgive Krank for a wonderful recap.

It's not grammatically incorrect to start a sentence with "but."
"Beginning a sentence with a conjunction
It offends those who wish to confine English usage in a logical straitjacket that writers often begin sentences with “and” or “but.” True, one should be aware that many such sentences would be improved by becoming clauses in compound sentences; but there are many effective and traditional uses for beginning sentences thus. One example is the reply to a previous assertion in a dialogue: “But, my dear Watson, the criminal obviously wore expensive boots or he would not have taken such pains to scrape them clean.” Make it a rule to consider whether your conjunction would repose more naturally within the previous sentence or would lose in useful emphasis by being demoted from its position at the head of a new sentence."

I begin sentences with "but" all the time. But "but much improved" does not constitute a sentence. Nor do most of the sentences in that post. Which is fine. A comment is not the same thing as a recap. It's more exclamatory than expository....ummmm, I thiiiink.
That said, I couldn't give a rat's ass about the odd typo and spelling error (depending on how grievous the error is, of course).
Not much has changed for me this week. Still like and hate all the girls as before (die Renee). Sad to see Samantha go, but I think she has genuine potential (unlike most contestants), and could do well in modelling if she set her mind to it. Looking forward to the makeover though!

great recap Krank!
i think Natasha is getting a bum deal--unlike Renee, which seriously, stfu Renee--because they knew that Natasha's english wasn't that great when she was cast and they haven't done anything to compensate for that, which is a little unfair.
back to renee--girl has some serious issues. what was she crying about--because she had to act like a clown? wtf? at least she knows what a class clown is--and why does she think she deserves a closed set while she is getting her pictures taken? she is going to have to get over herself.
Jaslene looks like Gollum--spindly legs and all--but she does take great pictures. i hope they can make her over to look human. i want her to stay around just to piff off Renee.

Meh, I don't feel too badly for Natasha. It's not the langauge barrier. She's just completely clueless. She doesn't hit her poses, there's no awareness of her body, she just squirms and wriggles.
Remember her at the audition panel??!! It's like she has a 7-year-old's idea of what a model does.
I do find her quite entertaining though.

I STILL miss Kathleen! I am going to get behind Felicia, the poor man's TyTy banks because I too am from the Htown.
Brittany looks like Sandra Bernhard. Good call.
Jael???? How is this crazy bitch EVER going to sell Cover Girl???
Natasha is only around for drama and ratings.
Renee, why must you be such a bitch? You are pretty and your bitchiness is taking that away from you!!!
Jaslene is over compensating for not making it last cycle.
I can't even remember the rest of them.
Kathleen........come back....riiight?

Nice recap, Krank! It's so much easier to follow with the screencaps with the girl's photos. Keep up the good work!

Great recap this week. I hope next week is makeover week. Maybe they'll pick on Renee and chop all her hair off. That would be interesting.
I still miss Kathleen too.

Tits Magee - I agree with you on all assessments. Jael is really the one who stumps me, she's just soooo out of it and can't even put a sentence together. She looks like she's on drugs. I would NEVER look at her on the street and say "I'd make her a Top Model"... I'm sure she's a very nice person, but she makes me cringe ever time she opens her mouth.
And I saw the preview for next week, and it looks like they DO chop off Renee's hair! In fact it looks like a bad reverse mullet-style haircut (long on top, thin in back). I cannot wait to see her complain about how unfair her life is!
Tyra needs to lose the do-rag and extensions. They look atrocious.

One more comment - I've been watching Australia's Next Top Model -- and there are some things that I feel compelled to comment on:
* This may be a cultural thing, but the photographer and other judges are NOTICEABLY more blunt with the girls while they take their photos... they'll openly pick on them and tell them to shape up (in the U.S. version, they just roll their eyes and save it for later... and Nigel is a lot nicer than this photographer)
* I think the model Erika is very pretty but sounds kind of rough when she talks - she doesn't sound very glamorous if you just listen to her voice. It's almost like she's bored of this show already.
* How come NONE of the girls take a bad picture? During panel, the judges always say "oooh, stunning" when I think a lot of the pictures are just average (or by the America's Next Top Model panel, would be heavily criticized). I don't get it.
* All the girls seem so proud of themselves when they see their pictures... and they openly comment on it. I don't think the American girls do that (probably because during panel the judges don't always praise them).
Anyone else been watching this?

Did anyone else think that Miss Jay's voice sounded particularly husky this week? Maybe its his outlandish costumes, but I swear his voice is normally softer.
I love this season. Some of the girls have such unfortunate faces that I actually feel better about myself after watching. j
No clear favorites yet, except for loving to hate Renee.

Kermit I have been watching Australia's Next Top Model and have noticed some of the same things. During panel don't they also seperate the girls and do a one on one?
Some of the photos from the horse shoot were just terrible. There was a general unawareness of where the camera was and of where their body parts were. The photographer seems kinda mean, the lady on set was horrible and their comments during panel were mild.
I also couldn't imagine any of the girls standing in front of Tyra et al saying things like "I look fantastic". They would be cut down to size immediately.
I did like that they had a real live model come and give the girls lessons on walking. Miss Jay just seems to not be a very constructive teacher.
*I can't wait to see Renee get her new do*
