On this week's ANTM, we get all the usual makeover goodness (and hideousness), plus a bonus performance!
Nigel's reluctant understudy
We open with the usual post-panel chit-chat. Brittany's peeved because she wants to be perceived has high fashion, but the judges see her as very average and commercial. Analeigh's feeling stressed because she's let down the judges.
When the girls arrive back at the house, what to their wondering eyes should appear? A tiaraed Tyra, of course! Tyra thinks this is an appropriate time to have a princess party with the girls, so she gives them some tiaras and party accessories suited for my six-year old cousin's birthday party.
Okay kids, tuck in because Tyra's about to drop some knowledge on us mere mortals. This week's lecture is about that time Tyra gave her career a makeover. You see, when Tyra started out modeling she was a skinny minnie, but then sure enough she got that famous booty and boobies that she can't ever stop talking about.
Apparently once upon a time when Tyra was living in Italy, her agent told her that almost no designer would work with her until she dropped in 15 pounds. But headstrong Tyra didn't listen to those naysayers! No, she ordered a pizza and decided to drop high fashion and pursue more "girl-next-door" gigs.
Because this is surely what pops into your head when you hear "girl-next-door"
In a transition that we all saw coming from a million miles away, Tyra talks about how her career makeover is like another kind of makeover... the makeovers that the girls will be getting! Tyra begins to tell Analeigh what kind of makeover she'll be getting when all of a sudden, my TV suddenly flips to PBS.
Looks like Masterpiece Theatre's budget got cut
Seriously. Did someone slip something into my hot and sour soup tonight? My words are not going to do this justice, so I really hope you guys got the clip. Mizz Jay/Wicked Stepmother brings Tyra an apple that she devours in an absolutely disgusting manner. Tyra, for all the advice your mother gave you about modeling, didn't she ever teach you to chew with your mouth closed? T faints from the poison apple and Mr. Jay/Prince Charming comes to revive her with a kiss. A kiss that's a little too uncomfortably long for my liking. But alas, sexual orientation gets in the way because Mr. Jay's kiss is not strong enough to fully revive our fair maiden. She's too woozy to tell the girls about their makeovers and I'm too woozy to continue to recap this ridiculousness.
At the salon, all the mirrors are covered and it looks as if Tyra's going to continue in last cycle's footsteps and not tell the girls what makeovers they'll be getting.
Marjorie goes from blonde to brown. Hoolia says thumbs up.
Joslyn gets a long long weave. Eh, I'm indifferent.
Sam gets her hair lopped off and goes blonder. Waterworks because she's losing her long hair, but it ends up looking really, really good. I approve.
Hannah gets the Dominique soccer mom cut. HA! HA! Oh man, it does not look good, but I still wholeheartedly approve for humor's sake.
Clark goes dark brown and looks like she gets some extensions, too. She claims she's still a blonde at heart. I don't love this makeover, but I don't hate it either.
Lauren Cheese gets... absolutely nothing! Queen Tyra supposedly made her more platinum, but the difference in color and cut is so minimal that she looks absolutely no different. So strange! And sort of a letdown...
Sheena lightens up with some blonde face-framing highlights and slightly shorter hair. I do not think this is going to help tone down the hooch. My vote: downgrade.
The stylists start to play with Analeigh's hair and I'm ready to pounce if they destroy any of its loveliness. Thank goodness they leave the length and they change the color to a dirty blonde. I'm not particularly wowed by the color change. At least the flowy curls are still intact.

Yes! Finally! Now back to reading the recap...

I love Elina's. I know a lot of people hate it and think it looks weird/bad whatever, but I think her hair makes her look quite racially ambiguous, plus redheads are apparently in fashion now.
I had Brittany as my girl to get eliminated in Fantasy ANTM, plus she was a major bitch in this episode, so I am not sorry to see her go.
And don't feel bad about a late recap; they take a long time to write and sometimes that time just isn't there. I tried auditioning for recaps and had started writing one for some show and I never got a chance to finish it (Sorry Flipit!).
Besides that, if you don't mind, could you include your opinions about the pictures at the end? The other recapper did it and it adds a little something, I think. They didn't know anything about modeling either and it's far more interesting to get someone's opinion which would basically be the viewer's.

Poor, poor Brittany. It must be such a burden to be called pretty on a frequent basis. It is your cross to bear.
I love red hair, myself (I've been one for about 10 years now). The problem with that slop on Elina's head is that it not only screams "WEAVE!" or "WIG!", but it screams "OUT OF THE CLEARANCE BIN!" as well. That shit looks used. Seriously, does Tyra get these weaves on consignment?

PixieGal262 - Generally, by the end of recapping the episode I'm too burnt out from analyzing the girls' antics to comment on their photos. In the past I've stuck in my comments if I have a major issue with something the judges are saying, but I can try and stick in some more comments here and there.
Pegster - I've got nothing against red hair. You're right, it's the cheapness that's a problem. And I don't think the look works when it's all tight curls versus the loose, flowy curls. I just feel like it's not the most flattering shade for her skin tone - a deeper, less orangey red would look better, in my opinion.

I didn't mind Elina's hair, but I definitely liked her old look better.
I thought it was kind of funny that Miss Jay complained about Marjorie not showing enough swimsuit, but Elina (who won this week) didn't have any swimsuit in hers at all hardly. It was all face and tattoos.
I think that Clark's picture can't be accurately compared because it's too far away. Why is it so far away? And also, Hannah's picture makes it look like she has no feet.
I liked the makeovers, for the most part, but found them rather boring and predictable. LOVE Sam's hair. I even considered getting my own hair cut short like that for about 5 seconds, then reconsidered when I realized how horrible it would look.
Also, Tyra's antics are annoying. I haven't been a fan of her since the first season I watched (Naima's season) but that whole Princess schlock (complete with seriously horrendous Good Witch accent) was just cringeworthy. I wish Paulina could host. Tyra is just way too into herself and she thinks she's a good actress. Newsflash Tyra - You're not!

Thanks for the recap, late or not! lol
I think Tyra should stop the theatrics! Her phony accents aren't funny either! She has to be the center of everything, doesn't she?
Is just me, or Elina was looking like Carrot Top?

Good stuff, Hoolia!
Elina's makeover grew on me as the episode went on...My favorite makeover has to be Sam's. The asymmetrical cut always has a warm place in my heart (hey, Salt n Pepa circa 80's!). The cut took her from mall girl to fashion model.
Sooo glad they didn't chop off Analeigh's hair. The color change didn't do it for me. They should've given her the non-makeover they gave to Lauren, maybe bring out the chestnut brown highlights in her hair some more. Joslyn's weave is ok. Count me as indifferent, too. I'm feeling McKey's makeover. Anything would've been better than that red BEFORE.
I don't care about Isis's makeover. How do you makeover a transgendered person more than she already has made over her/himself?
Others in the "I sooo don't care" category: Clark (ugly and boring), Marjorie (fake-nervous), Hannah (ignorant and annoying and very bucky), Lauryn (boring and albino-ish), Sheena (still like her personality but she's not a model).
Question #1: Anyone else noticing how lifeless Lauren is until she gets in front of a camera with hair done and makeup on? She has an inner model that consistently shows up to every photo shoot, which makes me wonder what fake complaint are the judges gonna pull out of their asses to eliminate her?
Question #2: Why does Paulina care so much that a model "looks like she's thinking" in a picture? Since when are models supposed to be MENSA members? That should be a new ANTM drinking game. Along with how many times Tyra uses "self-deprecating" humor or tells an anecdotal story about her modeling days.
MY FAVS:
So far with the show's editing, Joslyn is completely underrated as a model. Maybe she's not being shown so much because she's not producing any drama (a refreshing change!)?
Elina is fierce! She does that whole "modeling with the eyes" thing that Tyra loves so much...just like Angelina Jolie.
When is Miss Jay gonna win this show? She's my new favorite. Strike a (ghetto) pose!
I don't care that Brittany got the boot for being too "natural" (translation: boring). Bye bye, future football trophy wife!

And Hoolia, I love the way you splice your opinions of the makeovers in with the BEFORE/AFTER screenshots of the girls.
Your ANTM recaps are perfect. Don't change 4 NE1.
And WORD on the Masterpiece Theatre segment. LOL I was like WTF, did I eat a tainted apple?
Double-BOO to Nigel's wife popping up on my TV screen. She's an alleged model (show me some pics!) but he can do better. :)

Pixiegal...an ANTM FANTASY LEAGUE?!!?! Where/how...I wish I had known about this...if only.
blahblah, Paulina has said many times over the years that modeling requires no intelligence and most models are stupid. This is most likely why she makes the "you look like you were/weren't thinking" comments so frequently.
Lauren and Samantha (best makeover) looked amazing in their shots. Agree that it was odd they selected Elina, given that you couldn't even TELL she was wearing a bathing suit. It might as well have been an ad for the bracelet she's wearing, or even for the tattoos. Maybe they felt bad about giving her such a horrendous weave.
Tyra's acting skills...I can't. I'm still having nightmares about that glowing-eyed good witch. The only purpose of that Snow White sketch was to show off Tyra's ACTING! skills (or lack thereof). She's like one of those parody-like characters in Christopher Guest films, only she's not in on the joke.

I am so glad that I found someone who agrees with me on the whole Brittany-Elina-mom conversation. Brittany is clearly very naive. You don't hear people say they "hate their mom" a lot, and typically if they do its for good reason. Just like Elina said, love isn't just putting a roof over someone's head, and no one really knows their complete relationship.
I began to dislike Brittany last week though with the whole "Is Hannah racist" or not situation because NONE of the girls handled that situation like mature women. They handled it like litte high school students, which I guess I should expect since they all are pretty young. Anyways sorry for my rant.
Great recap.

msu11y28, the ANTM fantasy game is in the forum section of Tvgasm and it's a blast! Even though tonight is the fourth episode, you can still join! Just scroll through the fantasy ANTM thread and find Episode 4 questions.

msu11y28: I lol'd at your last line. Too true.
I am so glad Brittany got the boot. The girl was criticizing Elina during makeovers for crying over her cheap orange weave, and like 5 minutes later she's crying over being "too pretty". God how I hate those people.
I totally agree with your take on the Elina v. Brittany fight. People grow up in all kinds of circumstances, and as a black girl, I think Brittany should have been able to recognize that.
Best make-over was definitely Samantha's; I hope she goes far. Worst was Elina's. I had that hairstyle over the summer after my brown dye job faded to orange and I stupidly got it cut bluntly which gave me the huge corkscrew waves. Yeah.
Best photo I thought was Lauren's, worst Analeigh's. I am so glad BritBrit went home. No more drama for our fair (and unfortunate Elina).

I think the right girl went home, very pretty and exotic, but just not model-esque.
I can't believe Isis doesn't relish these opportunities to be girly as all get out--SHE really needs to get in touch with HER dreams of being the whole woman SHE wants to be, and not hang up on "tucking" or whatever is holding HER back.
I capped the gender, coz she's not a he . . . If she wants to identify as a woman, I call her she . . .
I love your recaps hool, but this one was a tad short, not that there's too much to add.
Makeovers better than last time, like Sam 's and Isis' best, think Mckay's too heavy handed, and don't like Marj's--too blah. The rest, meh, and Elina's Mom issues, well, it's actually good for her to be able to seperate her mother's behavior from her own inner confidence, many times a neglectful childhood is internalized--not that there probably isn't more work to be done there. If she has kids later, she might soften on her Mom, but then, I don't know the details . . .
I'm sorry, was that soapboxish . . . my apologies, and as always, just my opinions, please disagree strongly, I like the debate and dialogue, truly duly!!!!

I tuned in late and had to check and recheck the tivo to be sure I was actually watching the makeover episode. It seemed to me they did very little and in some cases just switched one girl into the original look of another. There were some drastic changes though. Sheena – dropped a peg on the exotic meter. Annaleigh – no real change. Clark – complete and utter destruction of any beauty or interest this girls face once had. Hannah is actually an exceptionally pretty girl and had a Gibson girl innocence about her that they completely destroyed and replaced with boredom. Brie –same, which, luckily, is a good thing. Britney – no diff, ho hum. McKey – huge, wonderful difference and I see her going very far in this competition. Isis – minimal difference, but positive. Marjorie – pretty drastic and much improved. Gives her a softer fawn look. Samantha – huge, wonderful improvement, but I don’t know, she still seems pretty one dimensional to me. Elina – what is Tyra smokin’? She had a cool, edgy look and now she’s ordinary and perhaps a bit porn mag-ish. Joslyn – no measurable difference.
As for the conversation between Brit and Elina I can see both sides. I would certainly be surprised if someone told me they’d never loved their mother and would expect to hear tales of awful neglect or physical abuse which was never presented or did I miss something? But I also don’t happen to think that parents should be best pals with their children and should make it clear from the get go that they are there to raise them and that kid’s will, no doubt, disagree with many, if not all, decisions made on their behalf. I had that conversation for the first time when mine was 8 and we’ve managed to glide through the first couple of teen years relatively unscathed. We'll see how the rest go and I'll get back to you on whether I publish my hypothesis on childrearing. ;)

I agree that Elina has a right to feel however she feels about her mom. However, if she is being financially supported by the woman, she is totally a hypocrite. Go out and get a job and be your own person.
I'm not saying that she should love her mom because she's supporting her--that's nuts. But if you really hate her, you have to stop taking her money.

Nice job, Hoolia... I can usually only stomach episodes towards the end when the bitchiness gets close to out of control, but you are helping me keep up just fine.
love, J-Mo :)
P.S. I think all the "BEFORE" pictures look like they came straight out of Adult Friend Finder...
19 of 25 | Posted by J-Mo | Posted on September 24, 2008 6:16 PM
I don't think it is hypocritical for Elina to not like her mom and "take her money." If I'm right Elina is only 18. As far as I recall, it is a parent's responsibility to care for their child until 18, whether the kid likes them or not. So Elina, is not being "hypocritical" she is dependent on her parent as she should be until she reaches the adult age.
And anybody who says they have never ever disagreed with their parent/s at anytime is delusional. But just because you disagree with your parents does not mean you move out!!! I can't believe that people are so quick to judge. Elina pointed out that nobody really knows the situation so who are we to judge?
And as for Brittany's idiocy? Taking care of a child or anybody else is more than just a physical responsibility. It is a fiscal, emotional, mental, and spiritual responsibility as well. Anybody ever heard of adoptive parents who adopt children simply for the money? So, unless anybody has any inside information about her family, we have to take her word for it that her mother was emotionally neglectful.

Hoping it's not too late to post on this recap, I know sometimes if you wait too long no one reads them.
What a refreshingly funny (but not offensive) recap. I really enjoyed it Hoolia!
I have to echo AuJew - that Hard Knock Life screencap was snortle worthy.
Sheena's make over bugged me. I loved her beautiful blueblack hair and feel like those stupid blonde on black highlights did nothing but was her out. Why do people insist on putting blond on black highlights anyhow? Does it EVER look good?
And what was the point of Tyra's story in the beginning "I could not get a high fashion job as I was, so instead of conform to them I found people who would hire me for the body shape I have".... so now let's change YOUR looks to conform to my wishes. Mixed message much Tyra?
That whole skit at the front was totally cringe worthy. Whoever suggested that Paulina take over the show was brilliant - THAT would be a show worth watching.

Thank you for the recap, Hoolia. I do wish it was longer. I enjoyed the ones last year very much. I am probably too late with this comment, but Elina really bugs me. She did admit she cultivated her image very carefully, and boy, did it come crashing down this week. She was looking so cool, calm, collected and above it all... First with the makeover crying jag, and sorry, but Brittany was right, if you are such a strong person, the way your hair looks isn't that important to who you are. And sure, she is entitled to hate her mom. We don't know what went on in her house, although it seems to me that not that much did. You are entitled to discuss it with a group of girlfriends without being called psycho. To do that in front of TV cameras for a national TV show, and say "I hate my mother. I hate her.", so that everyone she and you know, and everyone you don't, hears that? In my book, that makes you at best an immature, self-centered famewhore. And that's all I have to say about that.
