My apologies, gang, for the late recap. We moved to a new place this weekend and it turns out moving SUCKS. Plus, my cable and internet provider has a pact with Satan to destroy me. Anywho, I will do my best to have the recaps posted by Friday from here on out. And away we go!
Welcome to sunny downtown LA, where the ANTM top 13 start the grudge match to determine who really wants to be on top. This week's episode is chock full of teen-friendly information: the dangers of smoking, the saving of water, the offensive things you can say about people's personalities and professions, oh my! Is it just me, or is Tyra really upping the "check me out, I'm just like Oprah" this season?
You wanna be on top?
Jay is there to greet the girls and tells them he has something special to show them. What could it be?! A former winner? A former loser? Mizz Jay dressed in something ridiculous? Nope, not this time. He wants to show them the Green Machine, their vehicle for the entire season. The girls feign excitement as they look around for their real limo, but it never comes. So sad. Even Heather, social outcast of the year, does not seem too excited.
I left Indiana for this?
I wonder what makes it green - is it hybrid? Low emissions? Recycled tires? No, turns out the inside has a lot of grass and the seats are made of tires. Boo Green Machine!
They head over to the house which is, as usual, kick ass. It also has a Green theme going on complete with friendly suggestions on how to conserve. There is a runway over an indoor pond with a huge projector and, of course, oversized pictures of Tyra and last cycle's winner, Jaslene.
Jaslene in: The only work she'll ever do
After what seems like minutes in the house one of the girls asks about skinny dipping. Wow, if this were a first date you'd be having sex right now. Whores. However, as excited as male viewers everywhere may have been at the prospect of seeing blurred out boobage, it was short lived as they all hopped in fully clothed. Doesn't skinny dipping usually entail taking OFF your clothes? Well, good thing they weren't trying out for Americas Most Smartest Model now, isn't it?
Heather is one of the only girls not in on the non-skinny dipping. She tells the camera that she had a really lonely childhood and is hoping it is something that she can work on... as she sits alone hunched over a sketchbook. Heather, I'm not a friendologist, but I'm guessing sitting alone and not talking to anyone else isn't going to get you any.
The girls are hanging out and doing all the typical first night stuff. Saleisha does a Tyra imitation with Bianca and Lisa as the final two, Chantal is crying tears of joy over the view, Heather is being a loser, and 8 of the girls decide to take Tyra's Green advice and bathe altogether to conserve water. That Tyra, she sure is a class act. Saving the world one idiot at a time.
The next day is the first photo shoot, woot woot! Jay tells them it is going to create awareness about the horrible impacts of smoking. Man o' man, Tyra is really raking in the life lessons this season. The final picture will have 2 shots of the model. The first shot will be a glamour shot of the model smoking in front of the mirror and the second is her mirror image showing an ugly side effect.
The only downside to this shoot is the photographer, Mike Rosenthal. He is the same person who shot the circus freaks in cycle 7, and while some of those pictures were great, I haven't slept a full night since seeing this:
Aaand I've lost my appetite.
Ambreal is up first and her side effect is... Cannibalism? Mike Rosenthal would do that to me. It is lung cancer but they chose to portray it by having blood pouring out of her mouth and dripping down her chin. Seriously Tyra, I scare easily.
Jenah and Mila both have hair loss from chemo as their side effect. Jenah's shoot goes off without a hitch and then my screen is taken over by a possessed doll from Chucky's undead army. I honestly hide behind my couch because Jesus h. Christ!
What is that thing?!?!

"Mizz Jay is here to talk about styling issues they've had in the past. He tells them they have to look good and stylish when they come into panel. All they need is a few simple items."
Is the person who's routinely garbed in circus leftovers really the one who should be doling out this advice? LOL!

Hilarious! I totally saw the Chantal-Trichelle look-alike thing...can't wait for the rest of the season!

Kudos to Tyra for raising awareness on Aspergers/Autism! This episode was very REAL how peers react... some mean, some compassionate and caring. Heather's brain works differently (like a kid in a wheelchair who has legs that work differently) and she is doing the best that she can. Good for her that she's another gift, looks, to help her succeed. For more info on Asp, go to www.tonyattwood.com. Did you know that 1 in 150 kids fall on the AU spectrum? I hope that the compassion spreads this season... Mom of 2 kids on the spectrum.

This recap was hilarious. I had several laugh out loud moments...including your description of Mila's photo shoot... Yes, Tyra is definitely gunning to be the next Oprah, with the global warming awareness stuff, the Aspergers and the no smoking! Can't wait to see what other life lessons we get in the coming weeks!

I was totally ecstatic for Mila to be sent home. She's downright creepy. She is an automaton...just look at the picture of her when she got eliminated.
I do feel for Heather. At first I was like "blah blah they'll pick on everyone eventually." But then it seriously pissed me off. They didn't let up, and when that girl who was seen giving Heather advice said "I don't want her to think I'm her go-to girl" I wanted to hit her.
All I have to say...TEAM LISA! ANTM may not be a stripper (it didn't work for Bret Micheals next top girlfriend) but my gut says it might be a strippa!

did anyone else think Ebony has a Fred Flintstone beard thing going?

Great Recap! Hilarious!
I only have one comment,
Ummmmmm y'all know that chickyboo who had all that surgery to make herself look like a cat?......Strange...but Mila kinda reminds me of her....look it up!!!
Ok..2 comments....
Go Team Lisa!!!!

yay!!! I've been watching for this Pachita, and you've not failed me . . . oh how I annoy my coworkers with all this chuckling . . . I can't believe you made me laugh out loud while discussing a still born baby, now that's talent!!!!
So glad we're all loving on Lisa, now I hope she is the compassionate, kind one who helps Heather. I'm glad T-bo wants to be O, coz it's gonna help Heather a lot here . . . I can't see her winning, but would love to see her go all the way!
Yay, Mila gone too, not that I hated her, just don't see it, model wise, and she is a robot--I'm sure once T-bo saw no tears in sight on that one . . . next . . .
Rainbodragon, I do see that five o'clock shadow thing, but part of me really feels for our tender bitch, Ebony, and you know they retouch the F out of all of the shots. I hope she finds some confidence . . . I'd rather see a tight race with lots of good shots, than week after week of worst one goes . . .

I was so surprised by Ebony, after all of that "better than the rest" nonsense during the premiere. I do like her though, it seems like she just wanted to standout in the first ep. Hopefully she'll relax a little and find her stride, because she actually seems nice and really is a beautiful girl.
Hmm, this is getting tough... Team Everyone Except Kimberly and Bianca? For now at least. I'm sure there will be plenty of narrowing down over the next few weeks.
Glad you guys enjoyed it!

Love the commentary, and I read your column as soon as you put it up.
However, it makes me extremely sad to see that you refer to someone who has a form of Autism (Asperger's) as a weirdo. My four year old nephew has been diagnosed with Austism, and one of the most difficult things to deal with is to wonder how he will be treated when he is older. I see how the other girls treat Heather, and that is to be expected. We aren't talking about rocket scientists here...or even 7th grade graduates. It just made me sad to see that someone whose column I respect made that kind of statement.
The reason she sits by herself reading and doesn't think about joining the other girls is because, literally, the thought doesn't even cross her mind. Someone has to specifically tell her something for it to occur to her. Just like in judging when Miss Jay told Heather to stand with more confidence. He told her to look at the girl to her right, and she then copied what she saw.
Anyway, love your colemn, and of course I'll continue to read it. I just wanted to let you know how I felt.
Thanks!

I LOVED this recap. I laughed several times, out loud... and now I am the shunned one at the office.
Seriously, though... can you and Screampillar recap all the shows? I am really not digging the Hills recaps, or the ones for Heroes. Grey's is pretty ridiculous now, I am sure it can use your sensational wit... because it sure doesn't have any left!
I am on Team Heather, as well as Team Victoria (just because I love Gilmore Girls, and she has a "paris" thing going on).
Can't wait for the new episode tomorrow... and to see how many people freak out on the makeover episode.
Thanks for the recap... it was late, but WELL worth it!

Jenday23 and queenbee -
Of course it was not my intention to be offensive and I apoligize to anyone that may have been hurt by any of my comments.
Heather is one of my favorites! Her behavior around the other girls is clearly a consequence of Asperger's and I was merely trying to make light of the situation, as we recappers do. Judging by her conversations with her mother and her remarks in confessionals, I think she is very brave and strong and hope she does really well in the competition.
Hope that helps explain my point of view - I'll try to be more sensitive in future recaps :)

Had to comment - first I made the mistake of eating my lunch of cold pepperoni pizza while reading the recap, bleah....
Secondly, my son has Asperger's and the best way to describe him is it's like "absent-minded professor" syndrome. He's quite brilliant academically but has no social skills whatsoever. I think Jenday23's comments about how it just doesn't cross their mind is very accurate. But take heart, as a fifteen year old, he has improved by leaps and bounds over his earlier childhood years, which were very awkward & painful.
Rooting for Heather to go all the way!

Awsome recap 'Chita! (can I call you 'Chita?)
My brother works with kids with Autism and Asbergers and so I thought my love for Heather was biased. I'm so I'm glad to know others felt the love too!
When she "confessionaled" after overhearing the other girls talk about her that " This will not be my downfall, this will make me stronger" comment she gave me chills! LOVE!
SO excited for this season and SO excited that you are recapping for us!
TEAM PACHITA!
BTW - I didn't take any of your comments as derogatory (sp?) about Heather being weird at all!

I like Heather too and think she photographs beautifully. To be honest, her not connecting with the other models may be the best thing for her in some ways. She can keep out of all the bs that goes on in the house and just do her job. It will be interesting to see how she can connect to the camera instead.
Can't wait to the makeover episode! It's always my favorite and seeing girls crying over getting their hair cut is hysterical.

I wasn't offended either, Pachita . . . I don't know anyone with Asberger's, but I have a nephew who might--really interesting for me to see someone behave in those quiet introspective ways. Most people seem to adore my nephew, even without a diagnosis, and I am thankful that there are kind people in the world--it's quite the spin to place Heather in that den of competition, and I do hope the girls step up and give her a break.
I dunno, does this mean when I sit clutching my teddy bear staring into space people might be thinking I'm weird!?
Can't wait for the new show, don't know why I love it soooo!!!

It's always funny to me when people can laugh at other people getting made fun of...until the jokes personally affect them. Recappers are known to have very dark and cynical senses of humor. That's why we read these recaps in the first place. I vote for equal opportunity teasing/snarkiness, Pachita. If you stop teasing Heather for being a "weirdo", then Tyra and Oprah will have won!!
18 of 25 | Posted by blahblah | Posted on October 2, 2007 3:58 PM
Ha ha, thanks guys! Color me flattered! I'm glad you can appreciate my cynicism, it's all I know. I'll just consider my last post a disclaimer of sorts - none of my comments are ever meant to be mean spirited.
Anyways, I don't know about you guys but I've already dolled myself up in anticipation of tomorrow night's episode. Next post should be up by Friday so we can re-assess our teams, woot woot!
And Sweetblondie - you're welcome to nickname me as you like. 'Chita does have a little zing to it, no?

Stupid Bianca... remember Joanie (WHO GOT ROBBED) from Cycle whichever one Danielle won? She made it to the finals and she was definitely also a strippa. So count me on Team Lisa!
I was very very impressed with Yale girl and Kerry Horse face. (I don't bother learning most of their names this early in, otherwise I'm more pissed when they get cut)
And thanks for recognizing the Chantal Trishelle connection. I'll never get what made people think the Trash was so pretty, and I don't get it with Chantal either.

I think being in a house like that (and in a competition, no less) with a few catty mean girl would be hard and make most people feel akward, much less someone who has Asbergers. I have so much respect for Heather and the way she handled overhearing the other girls talk about her. At least her mom gave her good advice and seemed really supportive so hopefully that will help her block out the dumb bitches.
And in the group shot they always have at the very end of the show, Kimberly has freaky dead eyes just like Audrina from The Hills.

I will have to check out the "end photo" where Kimberly is channeling Deadrina.
I also thought the mom's advice was great, and so far Heather is handling it like a pro...
However, my favorite parts of Top Model are Jaslene's Cover Girl commercials. That girl CANNOT speak clearly. She sounds like she has a problem hearing herself... and she emphasizes words with little volume control.

I appreciate your response. I did not believe that you meant any of the comments you made about Heather in a malicious way. It is very obvious that she is one of your favorites.
I truly believe you have to laugh about the difficult things or those things will bring you down. Mabye I was just being a too protective aunt. Thanks for your sensitivity on things. LOVE your recaps!
