Tigh doesn't want to believe that because the contingency plan was to have that Raptor there, and he knew that Raptor was out there. And eventually, they did find it. Tyrel's magical source gave him some information on what channels were better to send transmissions, and they finally made contact with the Raptor. The response? They will make contact every twelve hours, and to prepare for command authority. The best part of the message was the end: We're coming for you.
Part of the reason why Tigh was so at ease with his decision to go through with the attack was the soldier that was chosen was so very determined to go on the mission. He had lost his wife to the Cylons, and he wanted to get them back. Now personally, I think it would be better to recruit people into the New Caprica police force and use them to get information on the Cylons. Or, if you're ruthless, find out who is on the force and then threaten their families if they don't help the insurgency, but I guess that doesn't make enough of a statement.
The suicide bomber does make his statement. He goes to the graduation ceremony, and blows himself up just as they were congratulating him for helping form a new era of cooperating among humans and Cylons.
Tyrel came home from one of his meetings to find his baby crying and his wife gone. Yes, Cally was on the list of people the New Caprica Police were ordered to bring in. The next day he met with Gaeta about what happened, and asked him for help. I thought this was strange because Tyrel said he didn't know who his source was. After Gaeta tells him he will try and see what he can do, Tyrel runs into Jammer.
Jammer is actually one of the secret police, but since they wear masks, nobody really knows. He is bothered by what he is doing, but he is in over his head. He thought that he could help by putting security back into the hands of humans, but didn't know what he was going to be forced to do. Jammer didn't actually say any of this was happening to him, but instead used hypotheticals so he wouldn't have to admit anything.
Tyrel is still pissed and says that when the time comes, people like Gaeta will be strung up and people like him and Jammer will be making the knots. Now I have to believe that Tyrel didn't know that Gaeta was his source, because Gaeta has obviously helped the insurgency a lot more than Jammer ever has. Oh, and by the way, if any of you hear that I am starting an insurgency or even just joined a group of people who travel around and beat up communists, could you send me a reminder to make sure that my leader isn't as fucking gullible as Tyrel? Even though he's never heard of Brooklyn, and it might not even exist, I am sure he's probably already bought a bridge there.

I don't think Kara has changed her mind about Leo. I think the comment about her killing him 5 times and it getting her nowhere hit home. So she's using emotions to try and get out of this one. They threw something at her that they thought would be her weakness and she's going to take advantage of that.
Did they ever say that Lee and Dee were married?
Anyway, excellent episode. Kinda makes you think about the state of OUR current affirs.

Great recap, J-Unit. This episode was a great season opener and kept me guessing.
Just to clear up a couple things:
Chani: Lee and Dualla are married; they mention it in their conversation about Lee being soft.
Tyrol does not know that Gaeta is the source. He only knows that Gaeta continues to serve as Baltar's assistant. If you saw the second part of the conversation after Gaeta leaves, Tyrol is talking to another member of the resistance and calls Gaeta a collaborator and doen't understand why he still works with Baltar. I had the feeling that Gaeta was the source, but I was hoping that Baltar himself was helping the resistance. Gaeta was the easy choice, but Baltar would have been a little more dramatic.

Wow, I never thought I would say this about Battlestar Galactica but it is simply the BEST show presently on television.
Better evn than The Wire, Lost or Veronica Mars and thats saying something.
This is a fascinating allegory on war, occupation and terrorism.
I do wonder if it would not be a better use of hardware if you were to use The Pegasus (a much newer and more powerful Battlestar) for the rescue operation.
J-Unit great recap and yes watch the webisodes they will fill in some of the gaps for you. Now that the season has started its not like there are going to be spoilers in them.

Great episode but I think they are delving into too much pop culture references to fit into their setting. Two off the top of my head are the Seinfeld swirl one and the homage to The Great Escape at the end with the prisoners being taken out in trucks, told to get out to stretch their legs then the centurions coming over a dirtpile ready to shoot them.

If you guys have never heard the podcasts that Exec Producer Ron Moore does, you should start. He answers a lot of the issues that previous posters have brought up. In this episode, he puts in the "swirl" comment because he's a great fan of Seinfeld. The end of the episode is a homage to the Great Escape, if I heard him correctly. Yeah, I guess it depends on what you want to see-the pop reference stuff gives a little light-heartedness to what otherwise is a very heavy show.
Someone mentioned the Pegasus - he said the reason they use the Galactica and not the Pegasus will be revealed in a future episode.

I agree with all of you who say this is the best show on TV. Two hours was not enough and I was wishing it wouldn't end.
Thanks for re-capping it, J-Unit!

Big fan of the show. I hope they don't spend all season getting them off the planet. Also, Leoben did mention that Kasey is half cylon. I wonder if she has the same properties as Sharon's baby who, I think, Sharon will find while she is on the planet.
