That's right - No. 1 movie in the country, bitches. My days on cable are numbered. I'm flying out of this show on the glorious back of one Mr. Nick Cage.

We open in the most depressing fashion possible - looking at pictures of one half of the late, great crime fighting duo known as Dee and Dum. Mario Van Peebles is no more, and Dum (who I have always considered his lesser half - thus the Dum) is filling Ellen in on his death.

Dee and Dum's supervisor, who I guess is just one more power-hungry pawn in Dave (and therefore Kendrick's) back pocket is there to corroborate the "death by angry heroin-filled needle" story.

Dum lies through his teeth, telling Ellen that he never knew Dee "had a problem." I'm pretty sure his only problem was letting your sorry ass crash at his place, douchebag. Ellen looks distressed and confused. I guess she hasn't had her daily 10 am cocktail yet.

"Why God, why did you have to take the hot one?"

"This happens in the middle of a case. Aren't you suspicious?" Ellen asks. Good one, genius. But the supervisor says they "investigated" the matter (what, for 12 hours?) and there is no foul play. Ellen swallows this without a second thought.

1 MONTH LATER. Ellen and Patty, same scene, same hotel room, same gun shots. The lone wolf Dum races across the street to the scene. A bleeding Patty wanders into an elevator. Dum gets to the same elevator in the lobby and finds Patty slumped in the corner. He picks up his phone. "My informant just shot Patty Hewes," he says.

I maintain my theory that Patty was shot BEFORE Ellen fired her gun - if you look carefully, she is already holding her abdomen when Ellen hands her the case file. I think Ellen really shot someone else, or just wanted someone to think she shot Patty. I guess we'll see if I'm right in two weeks...

Also, time travel is involved in some way.

After the credits, Ellen is walking to her hotel lobby when she spots Phil through the glass doors - with his paramour, codename London. London whispers in his ear and then leaves. Ellen looks concerned. She goes up to Phil and says hello. It takes him a moment too long to wipe the 'holy shit' look of red-handed guilt from his face.

He recovers and makes small talk, telling her he had a 'meeting' in the hotel. Is that what you kids (and by kids I mean sexagenarians) are calling it these days? Ellen tells Phil to tell Patty she says hi and he leaves.

"Patty's husband's having an affair," she later tells Dum in her hotel room. Again, does it not occur to her that Patty could easily figure out she regularly sees FBI-shaped visitors in her hotel room? Hotels are not the most private of places, as Phil clearly just proved.

She asks aloud what she should do - tell Patty or not. "If you don't know Patty's response, the smart move is to keep the information in your back pocket," Dum says. But since when has Ellen ever made the smart move?

Busty is in Kendrick's office. They chit chat about Kendrick's past. Grandfather couldn't read, Kendrick hated books as a kid, his father used to humiliate him every chance he got, blah, blah. "Well, you've certainly come a long way," Busty says, her voice dripping with irony.

Before she leaves, Busty apologizes for questioning Kendrick last episode. "I overreacted, Claire, I'm sorry," Kendrick says.

Tommy is in Ellen's office, telling her that Patty is going to be featured along with Phil in New York Style magazine. They are going to be listed as one of the city's "power couples." This whole episode is dripping with irony. It's leaking out of my television screen and leaving unsightly marks on the carpet.

Tommy tells Ellen that the reporter may come to interview her. "Whatever you say about Patty will live in print forever, so remember, she's a saint. She's the best damn boss you've ever had."

"This is where I would wink if I were physically able."

Later the reporter is interviewing Tommy in his office. She asks him about his baby and wife and how he is able to juggle it all and work for Patty Hewes. He says that when his wife was first expecting 10 years before, he didn't understand at first the sacrifice and commitment that were needed. "To a child?" The reporter asks, understandably. "To the job," Tommy replies.

I love this show. Thanks for the great recap, Linds. I watch it every week and still read the recaps. Glenn Close was amazing on "The Shield" too. Then again, maybe I'm just a sucker for gritty FX shows.

I felt really bad for Busty in Patty's office. Marcia's a good actress. Have you seen Grizzly in those cell-phone ads?

maryedith:

He's not just in those cell-phone ads...he's also the harp-playing, downtrodden husband to Mel on Flight of the Conchords. That guy's got range.

Great episode. Good to see Patty finally showing some vulnerability, and also I was glad to see just how much Ellen wants to take her down.

Anybody else excited to hear The French Kicks? They're one of my favorite bands, and I was way excited when I heard "Said So What" playing while Michael was at the art gallery with his girlfriend. Been looking all over for a video clip of this - anybody have one?
