Cancer bitch is working hard to convince Yang that treatment is the best method for Izzie. She shows her another patient who had similar problems, yet after a few months of treatment, she is better and the cancer is gone. Yang looks like she might be ready to put her 2 cents in on what Izzie should do. Yang brings Grey into the discussion to convince her and Grey reinforces that Izzie might not have enough time to wait out surgery. She could die at any moment.

Grey and Derek set Izzie up to test out what might happen if she goes through with Shepherd's surgery. They set Izzie up with a bunch of things to her head and now she really matches her new wedding ring. Grey shows her a series of three cards, and in the beginning Izzie is being kind of a smart ass about the whole thing. Once she has seen the cards, the put her brain to sleep. Something that I do in almost every meeting I sit in, so I'm not sure why this is such an ordeal.

Once the right side of her brain is completely asleep Meredith shows her the cards again. She can't say what the cards are and begins to panic. Meredith asks if Izzie knows who she is, and Izzie can't even speak. She tries a few times but is unable to say anything. After the surgery, Cancer Bitch and Derek meet with Izzie and Yang. Based on the results Cancer bitch strongly advises against it, but Derek reminds Izzie that the situation was worst case scenario and that she could die without it. Karev, unable to give Izzie advice on if she should have it or not, asks to talk to Derek in the hall. When they leave, Grey closes the door and tells Izzie emphatically that she cannot have the surgery.

In the hall Karev asks Derek for honest man-time. He wants Derek to talk to him as a friend not a doctor, and wants to know what he should do. He asks Derek to think about if it were Meredith and they could spend a few months together and then she would die, or she could live for years but never actually be Meredith again, what would Derek do. After a few minutes, Derek says that he would ask Meredith to go through the surgery.

Grey tells Izzie about the patient's results that Yang showed her. The patient turns out to be one of Izzie's new cancer friends. Grey tells her that Izzie couldn't speak and didn't know anything or anybody during the procedure, and Izzie has no memory of any of it. Izzie then follows up with the patient, Allison, to get her thoughts on it. Allison reaffirms not getting the surgery and advises Izzie not either. Izzie argues that she is constantly hallucinating and talking to dead people. She tells Allison that she is currently seeing birds fly over her head, which she is fairly certain aren't there. Why can't we see that? I'd much rather see fake birds than Denny. And with the bad ass technology we saw earlier on the Grey's Anatomy beach, fake birds are bound to be highly entertaining.

In other storylines, the Army Lt. is still trying to get Torres and the Major to cut off his perfectly good leg, even though there is no guarantee that this will rid him of his pain, it will be months before he can get a prosthetic leg, and that leg will cause him pain. The Major is obviously backing his military brother and Torres is disgusted by even discussing it. You can't blame her, her job is to save limbs and cutting off a perfectly valid one is against everything she stands for.

The Chief and Bailey, who have spent a glorious morning playing with the DaVinci and performing seamless and scarless surgeries, find Arizona. The Chief offers another surgery for Bailey after lunch with the new toy, and Bailey asks Arizona if she minds Bailey missing another kid surgery. Arizona doesn't, so Bailey skips off excitedly.

I loved the episode! I was so shocked when that turned out to be George!! And he did indeed look HOT in the Army uniform!!

Oh, and they called him 007, because he had lost some patients (season 1 or 2) and the others were teasing him that he was like 007 because he had a "license to kill"...

Great recap!!

Clair:

I gasped out loud too when George wrote 007. Definitely SMOKIN! in that uniform. Yummy.

WizeChiklet:

I keep thinking that if T.R.Knight wants out of the show, they could still have George but with another actor (like, Tobey Maguire, perhaps? Same build, height, similar face & voice), because with the disfigurement's requirement for plastic surgery, it'd be believable.

pixielated:

I heard that TR Knight is indeed leaving, so I imagine that his character dies. That was the implication, I thought; that he was dead and she had to decide whether to join him.

If she kisses enough ass, she'll probably stay but on a reduced schedule. She is a bankable film star, and she could be in, say, half the episodes as she goes through rehab.

The finale totally rocked. And, one way or another, we've seen the last of Dead Denny!

Malbec31:

LOVE the Flowers in the Attic picture! I almost spit out my wine I was laughing so hard...

fire@will:

Maybe the best episode since the first season. Some great surprises. Add me to the list of gaspers (and I seldom get surprised like that. George wlking into the recruiters office was another good surprise.

Thanks for recapping.

I hope you all are doing well - or about to have your own surprise turn for the better!

I read online, right after the finale aired, that Shonda Rimes, the creator of Grey's purposely left George out of most of the season so that we wouldn't notice that he was basically gone for this entire episode. Honestly, I think her plan worked. I was totally shocked. And if that's the case, it sounds like this was in the works all season and that George/TR is really gone :(
