Because sometimes, you don't lose. Take that Chief!

Part one of the finale ends in the worst kept switcharoo secret ever. We see the Army recruitment office and we see the Major's home. The Major asks Yang to come to the door with him, while in the recruiting office we learn that there is a Doctor waiting to enlist. There is a knock at the door and the recruiting officer says come in. A door opens and it's Owen! But he's not at the recruiting office to re-join the Army. He's at his mom's house! She opens to see him and is overjoyed. The recruitment officer welcomes the doctor to the army, and we learn that is it George. I would have never seen it coming that George was joining the military. I haven't been this shocked since it was revealed that Izzie had terminal cancer causing ghost hallucinations.

The Major and his mom hug sweetly while Yang hangs out on the porch awkwardly.

Owen, you're back! And you brought yourself an Asian.

Part two of the finale begins with all the residents passed out in Izzie's room. But not in the hot way they might have in season 1, in the sad, waiting for her to wake up way. Bailey comes in and wakes them up, sans Izzie, and they all begin to leave and report for their respective duties. Another lucky day for the patients at Seattle Grace, having zombies, who have had little to no sleep treating them. When Yang leaves she sees George and the Major in a very uncharacteristic man-brace. The Major seems very excited and I'm guessing that George just told him that he loved his performance in Made of Honor.

Bailey finds the Chief in his office and tells her that Izzie isn't awake yet. She apologizes for her funk, but that is just her mood for the day. On that note, the always spunky Arizona enters with big news. Bailey has been accepted into the pediatric fellowship, hurray! Her non-response annoys the Chief who assures her that despite his lack of enthusiasm and support throughout his entire process, he is now behind her. So, uh...act happy. Instead she just walks out. Can you imagine if you could do that every time your boss irritated the shit out of you?

In Izzie's room, Alex is sitting there willing Izzie to wake up. And after a few moments, she does. Alex yells for Shepherd because you know how it upsets the Ego when he can't pat himself on the back in a timely manner.

Yang asks the Major about the man hug, and the Major tells her excitedly that he slept finally. Admittedly he does look better. But he thinks he slept because Yang went with him to see his mom and now he is a new man. Poor Grey's Anatomy therapist, she seriously never gets any credit. Yang asks if he always hugs male residents after sleeping, and the Major says he hugged him because he has wonderful news but he'll let George share.

Speaking of sharing George's news he starts with Bailey. He gets into a long convoluted intro about how she is going to be mad, but what he has decided is important, and finally Bailey is like....George, spit it out already and he quickly tells her that he enlisted in the Army and reports for duty tomorrow. Nice two weeks notice George. Bailey turns and looks at him, and in her most maternal voice is like, WTF? You did WHAT?

Yang, not apart of this conversation asks Meredith if she knows what's going on with George. Meredith doesn't, and never two to spend too much time speaking of someone else, the conversation switches back to them. Yang wants to know if Meredith is fixed from her therapy, or if she would still....you know, not save herself from drowning. Meredith is like...well, I don't know if I'm better but I'm getting married today. And once again, Grey looks pretty in this episode. Pregnancy is such a good look for her.

Yang freaks and hits MOH mode asking Grey what she can do. Other than not telling Izzie, Grey is pretty much set. Yang quickly gives her whatever crap she has on her that justifies as old, borrowed, new and blue and the two go back about their day.

I loved the episode! I was so shocked when that turned out to be George!! And he did indeed look HOT in the Army uniform!!

Oh, and they called him 007, because he had lost some patients (season 1 or 2) and the others were teasing him that he was like 007 because he had a "license to kill"...

Great recap!!

Clair:

I gasped out loud too when George wrote 007. Definitely SMOKIN! in that uniform. Yummy.

I keep thinking that if T.R.Knight wants out of the show, they could still have George but with another actor (like, Tobey Maguire, perhaps? Same build, height, similar face & voice), because with the disfigurement's requirement for plastic surgery, it'd be believable.

pixielated:

I heard that TR Knight is indeed leaving, so I imagine that his character dies. That was the implication, I thought; that he was dead and she had to decide whether to join him.

If she kisses enough ass, she'll probably stay but on a reduced schedule. She is a bankable film star, and she could be in, say, half the episodes as she goes through rehab.

The finale totally rocked. And, one way or another, we've seen the last of Dead Denny!

LOVE the Flowers in the Attic picture! I almost spit out my wine I was laughing so hard...

fire@will:

Maybe the best episode since the first season. Some great surprises. Add me to the list of gaspers (and I seldom get surprised like that. George wlking into the recruiters office was another good surprise.

Thanks for recapping.

I hope you all are doing well - or about to have your own surprise turn for the better!

I read online, right after the finale aired, that Shonda Rimes, the creator of Grey's purposely left George out of most of the season so that we wouldn't notice that he was basically gone for this entire episode. Honestly, I think her plan worked. I was totally shocked. And if that's the case, it sounds like this was in the works all season and that George/TR is really gone :(
