Recap: Grey's Anatomy: The Last Temptation of the Pomp

greys2-22-07

Well, I am not sure what I can say about the last three weeks of Grey's Anatomy except that it is now over. I'm sure that they had grand plans when they first came up with this story arc, and when you look at all three episodes, there were a lot of good parts. Unfortunately, out of the three hours of programming, there just weren't enough of the good moments to make up for all of the moments that were mediocre or worse. For most of the time, I felt like I was watching a paraody of Grey's Anatomy. There was no subtlety and almost everything was so over the top it became comical. The rest was just confusing, but thankfully we did receive more questions than answers when it was all over.

So, I'm not going to write down what Meredith is saying, because it's just become too annoying during this arc, but I can summarize. She is talking about miracles and how they can't be controlled. For example, I thought it was a miracle I didn't throw my television out of the window because I was having difficulty controlling my anger about these latest episodes.

This was our not-so-subtle hint that there is a miracle about to happen on Grey's Anatomy. Or it was out not-so-subtle hint that there was no chance of miracle on Grey's Anatomy. We don't know, because it can't be controlled.

Depending on how much you like Ellen Pompeo and her character, the miracle most people were talking about this week is the life and death of Meredith Grey. There were some people in the hospital that already thought that it was too late and there was nothing more that they could do. Dr. Addison went to go check up on her Jane Doe patient, and Dr. Bailey even wondered aloud whether they had already done enough.

I guess it is the mark of a good hospital show when the doctors do everything they can to save a life and bring a person back from the brink of death. I'm not saying that's the case, but I think that is what Shonda Rhimes had going on in her add. She was probably also thinking that it would be even better if they were trying to save one of their own, and it would really give them a way to talk about death, especially with how scary and damaged Meredith is.

With all that in mind, Dr. Webber tells the doctor's not to stop. "This is Ellis Grey's little girl!!" he exclaims, as if he suddenly became Edward James Olmos in Stand and Deliver and the doctors were having trouble doing their resuscitation calculus on pale blue chalkboard that was Meredith's body. I'm not saying I didn't understand his emotion, but did he think that somebody would suddenly remember a resuscitation technique they had been holding back until the chief invoked the name of his crazy mistress? That's not exactly what happened, but after telling his people that "She is not dead until she is warm and dead" (much like I was saying last week), their first goal is to raise her body temperature and then go from there.

A lot of people assumed that Meredith wouldn't have any chance surviving because at the end of the last episode, she woke up in a hospital room and Denny Duquette and Kyle "Hottest Bomb Squad Member EV-AR" Chandler. For those of you who may have started watching the show this year, this is not good news, because both of those characters are dead. The first thing that came into my head when I saw this scene was that Meredith was delusional and all of this was simply an effect of her brain having a lack of oxygen. Even Meredith herself couldn't believe that any of this was going on, and believed that this was all a side effect of the drugs that they were giving her as they tried to bring her back from the brink.

I had a lot of problems with this week's episode, but honestly, the one I was most irritated with was that Meredith had no brain damage or ANYthing after being dead for several hours. No, I'm not a doctor, but seriously! It seemed completely ridiculous, and you'd think that she would at least have come out of it in a coma or something, not with immediate consciousness and speech ability.

What has happened to this show? The first season was so fantastic, and the drama was small-scale. I have a feeling there are worse things to come, since they'll no doubt try to top this story arc in the next season.

I hate myself for watching this show. It blows. Die Grey's Anatomy Die!

goobs [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Ok - can anyone say soap opera? This sucked. The writers are "seriously" f-ing up a once good show, seriously. Wow - what a waste of three perfectly good Thursday nights.

eellsinoc [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Hated this episode!!! Seriously - and Dr. Sloan is a waste of space and dialogue...go away. These last four or five episodes have not been anywhere near the first two seasons.

sluggerbun [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Again, how hot was Kyle Chandler in this episode?

Die_MediaWhores [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I abhor Meredith Grey. She is the worst part of the show, and I am beyond annoyed that the last 3 weeks focused mostly on her. I'd been able to watch it pleasantly because she was only a cog in the wheel.

The one saving grace is that Christina has managed to stay Christina and not into some sad shrew like Izzie or a useless lump like Sloan.

As much as I hate the way Izzie is acting, I do think they are forcing a George/Callie romance on us and it doesn't feel right to me. Clearly, they want Callie in the cast, which is fine, but surely they can think of other ways to integrate her without making us endure a completely incompatible couple.

She'd be hot with McDreamy, except he's got that whole "gotta be a hero" thing going on and she is far from a damsel in distress.

Why does everyone have to be couple off?

This show is going down the same road as Desperate Housewives...which is such tripe that I have stopped watching.

J-unit, a great recap of a crappy show. I applaud you and your writing about the past 3 horrible episodes.
Grey's Anatomy is dead to me. I stopped watching Desperate Housewives at the beginning of the season, and now I have more free time on Thurs. nights. Maybe I'll just re-watch the fantastic episodes of Heroes. Now thats television.

I started watching this show in October...I was recouping from surgery so I figured I would see what all the fuss is about. So I don't feel quite as angry or betrayed that this show sucks lately, as some die-hard fans who have watched from the beginning do. Now I am curious to see how good this show USED to be!

anyway, I was pretty disappointed by this last installement of the 3 week long "ferry/drowning" disaster. It was just so BLAH. I mean, it's pretty much a no-brainer that the person who the show is practically NAMED after is not going to die, so why were we strung along for 3 weeks just to find out Meredith's crazy mom is the one who ends up dying? Big deal!

Side note: I am surprised that Christina did not take full credit for "saving" Meredith's life by screaming out "TRY AGAIN!!!!!" to the Cheif and Dr. Bailey!

m_ruv [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Gahhhh... what a disaster this three-part "event" has been for the show. God knows what they were thinking. It's especially bad considering how much ABC promoted these episodes as absolutely unmissable television. I wonder how the ratings will react.

Deb-So-Bored [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Remember watching the Sopranos? Waiting for the show all week long and just as it starts you KNOW it's gonna be one of those "dream" episodes AGAIN! It's sad when great shows such as these have to go this route. I have to admit though, I did get a little teary when Izzie and Denny passed each each other in the hospital.

meliasaurus [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I'm done watching this show.
it jumped the shark after last years episode with exploding kyle chandler.

i am however fully devoted to Friday Night Lights, which i suggest the rest of you who are looking for quality television should start watching.

Tati [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I'm actually really glad i watched this craptastic episode b/c it gave me all the proof that I needed to STOP WATCHING the show, guilt-free. I no longer care what happens to any of them, even my favorites (Cristina, Bailey & Addison). eh. Good riddance, more TV time for me. But thank you, J-Unit, for doing such a great recap on such a crap show!

ELove:

what is wrong with all of you people?!? this was a great episode...too many negative people here for me. it's a night time soap opera, it's suppose to be overly dramatic! quit your crying and watch something else if it's sooo bad!
