Recap: Grey's Anatomy: Chemistry Lesson

Welcome back kids. It's great to be with you again. Today's lesson on Grey's Anatomy is about chemistry, as Meredith tells us in voiceover. Mer reminds us that, as med students, she and the Mer-tones studied Lots of chemistry and boy do they know their chem. And in a Clear example of what chemistry is NOT, we open upon the scene of George and Izzy in post-coital bliss. Well, not so much bliss as clear frustration and disdain. Could it be that Izzy and George have finally figured out what so many of us knew all along; namely that she and George have about as much chemistry as K-fed and a bar of soap? Join me after the jump and let's find out, shall we?

Meredith's voiceover concludes with the admonition that in "human chemistry, you either have it or you don't." Apparently the Grey's writers are actually starting to listen to their own writing, because they've decided to acknowledge that Izzy and George fall into the Don't category and actually write it into the story line. One must give them credit for honesty, I suppose, if nothing else.

One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn't belong.

What we're supposed to believe, is that those two crazy kids are just so nervous after all of the build-up and the waiting to be together that they can't manage to get the chemistry going. Yeah, nervous, that's the ticket! It has nothing to do with the fact that she looks like a supermodel and he looks like a teenage boy just getting to see "boobies" for the first time, nothing at all.

From the train wreck that is George and Izzy, we cut the Mer and Der doing their usual routine. You know the one, it's that one where he acts all girlie and begs her to stay and talk about their feelings some more while he braids her hair and she just wants to hit it and quit it. When is this "guy" ever going to grow a pair?? She treats him like such a biaatch that she might as well leave some cash on the dresser on her way out.

Greys%20Recap%203%20Pic%202.jpg

It's ok Der, just go have a good cry.

So Mer hits the door like a true playa, telling Der that she just wants to leave him wanting more. And while Der goes for the Haagen-Dazs and the Big spoon, we cut to Christina, who has apparently decided to throw a fresh coat of paint over the remnants of Isaiah Washington's career...er...I mean over her memories of Burke. And Christina, being Christina, has decided to go with red, because red is, "like blood."

Greys%20Recap%203%20Pic%203.jpg

"I'm gonna paint that man right out of my hair."

Meanwhile, the Chief apparently smelled all of the estrogen emanating from Derek's place and mistook Der for his wife, so he decided to bring some laundry over and Der, being a good girl at heart, accepted it and promised to have dinner warmed and on the table when the Chief got home. Der makes the best 50's housewife, ever!

Don't forget the starch, dear.

Finally, we arrive at the hospital and we learn a few things: 1. Dr. Hahn (former guest star, now series regular Brooke Smith), the new head of cardiac surgery, doesn't like Christina. 2. Sloan has an inexplicable crush on Dr. Hahn, probably just because she, being new, is the only woman in the hospital he hasn't slept with, yet. 3. Karev and Lexie were bumping uglies in Mer's house and she goes all Dorm Monitor on him and doesn't want him getting any with her pseudo-sister in Her house, even though he lives there too. Do you feel caught up now? I know I do.

Then, George comes over to whine to Mer about how badly his attempts at sex with Izzy have been going. Mer reacts appropriately:

Greys%20Recap%203%20Pic%205.png

George having sex, Eeewwww!!

As she runs from the horror of that image (literally, that's not a joke, she runs for it), Mer runs into Izzy, who grabs her in a Vulcan Death Grip -like the one Tom Cruise uses on Katie when he lets her out in public- and starts telling her about how George kisses, "like a chicken pecking the ground for food." Feel the love, kids! I think I can actually see Mer blinking out an S.O.S. in Morse code, with her eyelids.

Somebody Help Me!

Luckily for our heroine, Christina enters at that moment and Mer is able to escape from Izzy's grip.

DLM, So enjoyed your recap (as always). George and Izzy together have given me the skeeves since it began, because it's totally unrealistic, especially after her schizo-mourning of Denny. Why oh why are GA writers trying to make George the new McDreamy? Not gonna happen unless he gets a little less milk toast. Somehow, I think GA writers will probably sense the public's collective "ewwww" on this whole relationship and have Izzy's character realize she wasn't really in love with George as much as she just needed someone to fill Denny's shoes. Please, GA writers, I'd like to go back to watching my show without getting the heebee jeebees every 10 minutes.

I loved the recap! I agree the crying was very non-Bailey and I too hope that the writers return Callie to her pre-Callie O'Malley awesomeness.

I just had one nitpick, though I don't know if this may have a joke that went over my head, but Mer and Lexie dad's name is Thatcher.

ThisShowRocls!:

Thanks for the recap. I'll get back to it in a second, but right now, I need to get a few things off my chest.

I haven't liked the George/Izzie matching from the beginning. It's just gross! The worst part was when she said he was "sexy." I about crawled out of my skin!

For some reason, the George/Callie relationship doesn't bother me as much. Maybe it's because they don't force us to like them by throwing them in our faces every few seconds. Plus, I actually like the Callie character.

Bleh...they really need to end this G/I relationship, and S-O-O-N!

IMO, Meredith's sister needs to go as well.

Oh, and I thought the writing went back to "bad..." 2nd episode bad, this past week.

I may have to drop this show once and for all.

JasonR:

Good recap. Good to see the writers have picked up on the fact this Izzie-George thing is painful to watch and completely unbelieveable. You do see hot girls with nebbishy guys, but they have to have something going for them: funny, successful, smart, anything (single at least?). George is none of these things. While even as an intern who failed his boards he's smarter than 99% of the general population, in the SGH world he's a failure, and also a mopey sad sack in a pathetic, ill-conceived marriage to boot. No way a girl like Izzie would ever see him as more than a friend.

BTW, whenever I see Dr. Hahn all I can think of is "It puts the lotion on its skin, then it puts the lotion in the basket." I don't think I'll ever get past it.

Hi DLM! Another great recap!! I laughed out loud as I read it. I can hardly wait till your next recap. I agree that George and Izzy are not a good match. He's better off with Callie. They need to go back to portraying her as the strong, intelligent doctor she once was. This weak, incapable version is unrealistic based on the past story lines.

fire@will:

Good recap.

Dear writers (you have time to read this while you are on strike)... we are tired of the George-Izzie story. (I do get why she is attracted to George - she is a Type-A "rescuer" - I just don't care).

I liked Callie before she was promoted. Strong and confident.

There is no crying in baseball or Bailey... ever.

bakismaki:

While I do agree George/Izzie doesn't work. I disagree that someone like her would not be with someone like him. I disagree that they are not on the same level looks wise or that she is out of his league. She is good looking but she is not that hot. Anyone with a hi-def tv knows Katherine Heigl is not that serious. Plus they are friends, and these type of things tend to happen between male/female friendships.

shelley:

JASON R!!

I am so in love with you right now!! I knew that I knew Hahn from somewhere!! As soon as you said that I felt a weight had been lifted!!! a big MUAH! but that still doesn't explain why I hate her!

efog:

Is Dr. Hahn gay? Perhaps that is why she has no interest in Sloan and doesn't want to be around Christina. Maybe she is attracted to Christina's skill and doesn't want to be around her and let that show.

pixielated:

I never bought that Izzie-George relationship. I think that Izzie just wanted George because he had always been there for her as a friend, and she couldn't face losing him, especially right after Denny died. She wanted him to be at her beck and call.

I personally think it has tainted her love for Denny. It's sad to think about the episode when Meredith died, and Denny was there, just waiting for those magic moments when his path would cross with his beloved Izzie.

I still think Katherine Heigl is a beautiful woman; however, Callie has a more beautiful face. Meredith? Not even in the running--and that squeaky voice!

I stopped watching the show when the George-Izzie thing got serious. I may start again if they break up!

>BTW, whenever I see Dr. Hahn all I can think of is "It puts the lotion on its skin, then it puts the lotion in the basket." I don't think I'll ever get past it.

ROFL!!!

what a fine piece of acting that scene was.

JasonR, you're HILARIOUS!

zoo keeper:

So I have to say that at first I thought Shelley got this site confused with eHarmony & I really didn't want to have to read through her budding cyber passion for JasonR.

Then I googled It Puts the Lotion on Its Skin... and now I can say with the unfettered joy that Izzie and George would express if either of them got laid right... THANKS! I REALLY NEEDED THAT!

I'm now ready to knock Shelley down to get to you first, JasonR. It has been gnawing at me since the first It's My Heart! No, It's My Heart war when Denny was still gasping out his love for Izzie, and I never would have put my finger on it, but for you. I KNEW I'd seen those chipmunk cheeks and snide & sassy snarl somewhere before. I feel a lightness I haven't known since Burke got shot.

Seriously, JasonR, what can I do for you?

And shelley, I'm sorry I ever doubted your love for JasonR. & I can't explain why I hate her so much either. I always have, even when she was in the well. Even more now that I know she's not gonna get flayed before the credits roll. I think it's the cheeks.

p.s. ditto on Bailey wouldn't cry (maybe one dignified tear to punctuate It's About Time, but not the full on blubbering)

p.p.s. No, Hahn said she's NOT gay & that's why Christina can't hump her way onto the schedule anymore. Is it that inconceivable that a woman could be heterosexual but just not find Sloan's trolling for new pussy unattractive?

zoo keeper:

oops -- not find it attractive. Damn those double negatives.
