"You made what?"
This week, between episodes of Hell's Kitchen I became very inspired and tried to cook a little myself. Well "cook" might be pushing it because I really just put a bunch of stuff into the food processor and turned it on. But I did succeed in creating actual hummus - according to the recipe that came with the food processor. Chez Honey Gangsta is underway! So far there is one item on the menu. I also caught a few minutes of Chef Ramsay on the BBC in his "Kitchen Nightmares," and realized that he does have it in him to be a very encouraging and helpful mentor. Of course, that side of him only comes out after he has torn his protégés down to a mere sliver of existence. And those little British chefs are much more meager and timid than the Americans in Hell's Kitchen. I'm surprised they survived at all. Anyway, maybe this week Chef Ramsay can be my TV mentor and inspire me to make something that actually requires heat. Here's hoping...

We open this episode joining the Blue Team chefs puffing away like chimneys and discussing last week's elimination. Josh, sucking away at a cigarette, wants to know why Rock nominated him. Rock says it's because Josh thinks he's the team leader, but he's really only a fellow chef. Josh says that's what Rock thinks (deep inhale).

The Red Team chefs are congratulating each other on beating the guys and a couple of them are also having a smoke. Their apartment must smell great. I'm still kind of shocked that these people who certainly must know something about taste and nutrition are smoking like there's no tomorrow. Gross. At least they don't smoke in the kitchen because the last thing anyone needs to be served is cigarette ash. Julia (after her smoke) decides to go and study while everyone else sleeps. She realizes that she is a step behind the others since she is a short order cook and still has a lot to learn.
At 6 AM sharp everyone is startled awake by the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy playing reveille in their ears. Captain Von Trapp also joins in, blowing into his ship whistle with all of his might to awaken the sleeping smokers. A bunch of sailors come into the bedrooms, screaming at everyone to get up, get their uniforms on and get downstairs. They keep screaming while the chefs frantically try to pull their clothes on.
Well this is a surprise, guess who is having a cramp? It's our favorite hypochondriac Aaron. You see, he just can't handle strenuous tasks like getting dressed. He's about to lose it. Bonnie comes tearing out of the shower in a towel and tells us that she was running around the house half-naked and she wasn't happy. That's odd because last week when she was half-naked it was her happiest moment. I think she was just upset because her hair was wet. Vinnie confessionals that he played the bugle at band camp. Then he pantomimes playing the bugle and yells, "Rebuly, rebuly!" Is he missing teeth? The soldiers are still yelling at them to wipe the smiles off their faces and get downstairs. Rock and Brad have to physically put Aaron's clothes on him, while Rock confessionals that it is an essential part of teamwork to never leave anyone behind. Way to play into the military theme, Rock, but we are not in Vietnam, we are in Hell's Kitchen and the sooner that helpless little (obese) girl is left behind the better.
Downstairs the chefs line up to be berated again by Chef Ramsay for last night's dinner service. He tells them that since they are clearly not ready to serve dinner, this morning they are going to - for the first time ever in Hell's Kitchen - serve breakfast!
Huge smiles from our resident Waffle House short order cook. Boo-ya to the wenches who thought Julia was going to hold them back!
Chef Ramsay says that their challenge is to cook the most amazing, consistent breakfast from start to finish for a whole big bunch of soldiers. As the soldiers file in chanting and clapping Julia sheds a few tears in honor of our nation's Armed Forces. Joanna, with a little less dignity, can hardly contain her glee and she confessionals that men in uniform are "so sexy!" OMG!

Great Recap!! Hell's Kitchen is one of my favorite shows. I am rooting for Julia the "short order cook",because I LOVE eating at the Waffle House. I am in the Northeast and would love for a Waffle House to open up in our area. But when I travel South...breakfast is always at a Waffle House. I would love to see Julia win, but to tell the truth, I do not see any of these chefs rising to the top. Last year was a real competition. This year I do not think anyone is very impressive....Cannot wait for Monday night...

Bonnie...oh how I hate that dumb bitch. Melissa: "It took me 10 years to learn all the herbs". Uh, WHAT? TEN YEARS? Just stick to wearing push-up bras and lipstick, hon. Joanna was annoying but at least she was honest in her assessments and wasn't just trying to save her ass.
Rock was really obnoxious this episode with the third-person speak. Shut it. Josh is a tool. Brad doesn't register.
And finally, that bozo Aaron is gone. Somebody who can't even put some damn pants on has problems.

I think you see him riding under the radar but Brad (Miller) is from my area and he was on the local FOX Morning show and seems fairly well accomplished in the kitchen... and I would have tried to scrap the 'burnt' off the wellingtons too... hell I do it with cheap ass toast in my house, so can you imagine the cost of the Wellington going in the bin?
Yeah, Brad seemed to have it all on the morning show... his own kitchen, tha ability to cook, with out a british hag screaming in his face.......
But I do love Julia and if she isn't a final contender I will be surprised.. those bitches who put her up for not knowing what Creme Brule was can suck ass... they would be on my radar.... first would be the baby blonde who knows nothing about being a normal human who can function with out showing her ass and sticking her finger in her mouth while crying.

Did anyone else notice that Bonnie's hair was soaking wet when they were called to "rebuly" (love it!) and yet miraculously looked completely dry and styled when the teams were called into the kitchen to serve breakfast to the troops, supposedly only minutes later?

I was really hoping Ramsay would call Melissa and Bonnie out on their ridiculous nomination of Julia. Before this week I really didn't care who won, but now I'm cheering for Julia. Down with the t(w)its ('n' ass) -- which seem to be the only thing those two have shown!

great recap/screencaps!
i think that Aaron had some kind of disease--that they didn't mention for some reason--from the beginning. there has to be some explanation for why they helped him so much and gave him all those extra chances. plus he really didn't seem surprised by being told that he couldn't continue--he is a very odd man.
Julia is my girl! i totally want her to win--she works hard and she is motivated enough to stay up studying. LaSexorcisto, i was thinking the same thing about Melissa--if it really took her 10 years to learn that she should feel pretty darn stupid. that is something i would keep to myself.
i think the snobs are just upset because they are getting their butts kicked by a short order cook. "That b!tch could run a f***ing Michelin-star restaurant." indeed
Joanna sucked, but i'm sorry, a chef taking food out of the garbage is unacceptable. i think she would have gone home if Ramsey had caught her--or noticed what she was doing at the time.

Great recap, Honey Gangsta! I think it's brilliantly cool that you have no problem admitting if you don't kow something, research it, and share the info for the benefit of the whole class. Kudos!
I'm glad to see Joanna go. At a mere 22, she thinks she's ready for this gig and has it all figured out, yet she licked the tongs she was cooking the spaghetti with? Urgh. I don't even do that in my own kitchen. She needs more time to season herself (no pun intended, but it does work nicely, no?) and mature in the kitchen.
Jen is the Aaron of the red team. She may not be passing out and cramping every nanosecond, but she looks exceptionally fragile for this assignment. I have high hopes for Julia, as she's getting an awful lot of crap for being a short order cook. Melissa's comment about "It took me 10 years to learn all that [food] stuff" is a load of bunk. Julia could easily learn ingredients in a relatively short time, and learning to work with the stuff will eventually come along. I think Mel just wants Julia off the team because she has strong leadership skills when it comes to something she knows. I'd love to see Julia in the final 2- not sure it'll happen, but I'd love it anyway.
Thank God Aaron is gone! My husband swears he faked the fainting incident just to get outta KP duty. Either way, I'm still scratching my head as to how, out of thousands of applicants, that dude snuck in. "I've been cooking for over 40 years". His bio states that he's 48- he's been cooking since he was 7 or 8? Okaaaaay. I don't think Rice Krispie treats and Jello Jigglers count as chef training, Aaron.
Can't wait to see who goes next. If the Blue Team is on the CB (chopping block), it'll probably be Vinnie. Red team, I say Jen or Bonnie, which is just fine with me. Every season there has to be one female contestant that gushes about Ramsey's "hotness' in every episode; last season, it was train wreck Virginia, and I guess this season it's Bonnie. Perhaps that's why she's walking around half naked all the time- hoping Ramsey will do a surprise walk-in. Hmmmmm...

Great recap! Thanks!
My thoughts:
1. Aaron, Aaron, Aaron....WTF do I even begin with this?!
I agree with Shaz, how in the hell did he make it on this show? For being a total mess he wasn't even good "Reality Show" fodder...he was pointless, worthless and annoying. The white trash guy on this season's "Top Chef"..now HE was good!
And yeah the Ramsay/Aaron convo in the hospital was totally staged and BS.
2. Julia is great. BUT everytime the Waffle House is mentioned, I start to get mad cravings! I'd rather have that than the food they're cooking on this show! The food doesn't even look appetizing to me. Maybe it's because we see what's going on behind the scenes (HELLOOOOOO pasta in the trash, plastic quail eggs, raw scallops---BARF)
And ....Honey G you are right, they make the same thing every night, and screw it up every time...it's getting boring to watch. But Ramsay's fun...I crack up everytime he says "Donkey". He sounds like shrek.

I LOVE JULIA!! First episode I was indifferent, second I liked her and now, she's my ultimate fave! She stepped up to the plate, she works hard and she's motivated!
Bonnie = dumb blonde
Melissa = fake bitch
Jen = pathetic
Joanna = stuck up whiner
Brad = doofus
Josh = tool
Vinnie = I like him actually. He's so dumb, he's entertaining.
Rock = talks the talk, sort of walks the walk
I vote for Julia. She's the best.
I'm excited for next week though. It's a blindfolded taste test, but I wonder how many of them will do well? Almost all of them smoke - surely a chef would understand how horribly this can wreck their palate. Chefs are supposed to be able to recognize different flavors, not just smoke... Eww..

Aaron's GONE!!! Break out the champagne (but hold the spaghetti) - this is fantastic news!! I loved that you just skimmed over his antics for this episode. Attention-whore tactics just get to the point where no one gives a flying rat's ass anymore. It seems that EVERYONE (even the FOX staff) got to that point with Aaron. Good riddance!
Jen... ew. Just... ew. Spaghetti fresh out of the trash - ARE YOU KIDDING!?? I just threw up in my mouth. Yeah, THAT move will take her places. I mean, honestly, how is she going to defend that? You KNOW she'll be putting Hell's Kitchen on her résumé, and you KNOW that cooking fans and chefs (secretly) watch this. It really doesn't matter that it's probably a very typical thing to do (which is unbelievably disgusting, but we all know it happens), it's going to ruin her career. Hope she has a back-up job in mind.
And then Joanna - seriously. Rancid crab? Sweety, what are you doing working in a kitchen (and dreaming of chef-dom) when you can't identify this problem right away? I mean, c'mon. SMELL!! It's not like this is a difficult thing to do, and a chef that doesn't have a sense of smell probably won't get very far. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I'm willing to bet they're few and far-between. ::rolls eyes:: Ugh!
In all, I would've given Jen the boot for the "garbage spaghetti" move. Because that just demonstrates a complete lack of respect for ANYONE, especially customers who are trusting you to give them something FRESH! OY!!
GO JULIA!! Someone with a Café Press account needs to print up "Vote for Julia" t-shirts. Or maybe Waffle House should. I'd wear one!!
Thanks again for the great recap!!

I was thinking the same thing about their palates -- smoking ruins your palate. Dumbasses. The way they suck on their cigs, it makes me think of that not-funny "cranky old woman" from the Shoebox cards. probably no one knows what the hell I'm talking about.
REBULY!!! That about killed me.
I didn't think Aaron was being an attention whore. I really think he was just kind of clueless and clearly in really bad shape. I actually thought he was being heartfelt to Ramsay on the phone, because of how awkward and socially inept it sounded. I felt bad for him kinda, but also kinda not.
Finally, I love Julia. And so does Chef Ramsay. He always likes the scrappy ones.

yes, i think you will be the only one sad to see Aaron go....
it is hard to feel sad for someone when they are always getting out of the work and 'falling ill'
he was out of his league and didn't seem funny to me... just pathetic.

Great recap, Honey Gangsta!
I think Chef should have eliminated both Joanna and Jen. Joanna for not being able to tell the crab was rancid - I'm sorry, the only real skill you need for that is a sense of smell - and Jen for the dumpster diving. I cringed when I saw her do it, and JUSTIFY it! Ew.
I have no use for any of the guys. If I had to pick one, I guess it'd be Rock. He's the least hateable of the bunch.
As for the rest of the girls, I'm totally on Team Julia. I have been from the beginning, when they all snubbed her for being a short-order cook. I think she's there to learn, she WANTS to learn, and she has no real "ego" whatsoever. You can just tell that she wants it the most.

Go Team Julia!
I'm getting so sick of all the snobs on this show. First the boys think that they shouldn't lose to the girls because the boys are "chefs" and the girls are only "cooks." Whatever. They have yet to finish a meal. Then the girls decide that Julia isn't good enough because she doesn't have the formal training that they do. At least she knows NOT to serve food from the garbage. And she's the only one that's gotten anything accomplished in that kitchen. Remember when NO ONE but Julia could cook those quail eggs? I'm hoping that she makes it to the final. I think she has a chance because Chef Ramsay seems to like her and doesn't believe that you need to have formal schooling to be a good chef.

I didn't even spot Joanna lick the tongs-- that's just nasty! So thanks for the attentive recapping, HG.
Yeah, JayhawkAnne (#6) I also noticed Bonnie's miraculously dry hair. Curiouser and curiouser...
I dunno, it just seems like for this season they deliberately cast a bunch of losers for uh, maximum drama. I mean, Aaron, for realz?
I think the final showdown will be between Lauren Holly (Melissa) and Julia bc they are the only two who can actually cook.
And what was Jen thinking getting food outa the garbage?! What an idiot. Even stupider -- throwing it away in the first place.
But rancid seafood trumps garbage. You probably won't die or get seriously ill from spaghetti that's been in the bin. Rank food smells really really bad. I dunno why she didn't realise that it was off.
I reckon Beef Wellingtons must be fiendishly hard to cook. How in earth do you know when they are rare, meduim or done?
