Recap: Heroes: Believe it Or Not, This Guy Is Going to Kill Claire

heroes11-13-06

First let me say that I was very excited for this past week's episode of Heroes. You see, we have outfitted the TVgasm offices with a brang spanking new 1080p LCD Television and 6.1 Surround. For those of you who don't know what that means, it translates to I have an HD setup that is scores high on the gnarly scale. Woo-hoo! Or I guess in honor of Hiro, I should say "Waffles!". Heroes in HD. My life is now complete! Or at least that is what I thought. Despite ordering my HD system from DirecTV way back in October and being told I have to wait a month for the installation, I receive a call from the installer guys ten minutes they are supposed to show up, saying that they can't get to me for another two weeks! Therefore, because of the assholes at DirecTV (and although I love them and the Sunday Ticket, they will be called assholes until they fix the clusterfuck that has become my HD install), I had to watch everything in standard definition.

Thankfully, Heroes kicks more ass than most shows and standard definition is doing me just fine. And if a regular episode of Heroes kicks ass, then this episode looked like it could kick Rosanne Barr through the uprights at from sixty yards. Finally, we were going to be able to meet the one and only Sylar. And just for good measure, we also learned a lot more about some of the characters on the show that we might not have thought were so special.

Since I bitched about the assholes at DirecTV already, I will not waste your time bitching about the narrator. That doesn't mean that I have forgotten you NBC, it just means the assholes at DirecTV are pissing me off more right now.

Mohinder also returned the opening credits this week, and he had a whole lot to say:

"The earth is large, large enough that you think you can hide from anything. From fate, from God. Only you found a place far enough away, so you run. To the edge of the earth where all is safe again. Quiet and warm. The solace of salt air. The peace of danger left behind. The luxury of grief. And maybe, for a moment, you believe you have escaped.
So, what does that mean? Well, mostly it means that Mohinder likes to hear himself talk don't you think? The only reason I am not making fun of him a little more is because he was mourning his father at the time and preparing to commit his ashes at the end of this life to prepare him for the next life. Or something like that. I read the Ramayana in college, but how am I supposed to concentrate on Hindu canon when I'm sweating balls in Thornton Hall and all I can think about is getting out onto the college green before I go crazy and punch the kid sitting next to me in the face because he has some sort of unnatural need to mention Aquinas and causality in every answer he gives?

I know it's nice to pay your respects to the dead, but who invited this guy?

OK, before I get too worked up about that jab, let's get on with the show. As the characters and stories of Heroes becomes a little more complex, we have had to leave some characters out of certain episodes. Last week I was really wondering what the hell Eden had done with Isaac, especially after we had just found out she was working for Horn Rimmed Glasses, and I finally got a little love this week.

Isaac appears to be in some rehab facility and he is now off drugs. I have never been addicted to heroin, but if you're telling me that all I need to get off the horse is to find a pixie-ish girl to secretly abduct me and feed me soup for a couple of days, maybe I should try! So maybe it is a little harsh to make fun of Isaac for kicking the habit. Now he can go back to his normal life of painting shit that nobody cares about!

J-Unit...y must u torment my life?....I waited forever for this......Is anyone else shocked that HRG is actually a good guy? I am. That soccer kid reminds me of that kid from The Jungle Book.

I dont know if he IS a good guy. He now has a personal connection to his job now, but thats not to say he is a good guy.

When HRG was talking about his Claire Bear it wasn't creepy like it used to be...but is he acting???

I thought Mo the Dull was boring but now we have 3D dream soccer-boy boring. If there is a point to this storyline will someone tell me. And the dead little sister who was 'special' is sooooo X-Files.

The (shake it, shake it, shake it like a) Polaroid picture of Hiro and the GoogleGirl looked like they were behind a birthday cake.

Thanks for the great recap JoJo.

Mowgli! Sorry, that name is reserved for jungle boy Ozzy in Survivor. Unless the next episode shows him climbing trees or swinging on vines, he's not worthy!

I found this episode to be boring, but I appreciate its storyline. It's just a set-up for next week's episode. I, however, am COMPLETELY bored with Matt's story.

In the previews, it showed Claire with Peter in the amphitheatre of her school with the looming Sylar shadow over them. That should be a badass scene, considering the fact that Peter will be invincible too since he's with Claire.

Maybe Peter will get to Texas in search of the missing painting - doesn't HRG have ties to Linderman as well?

Eden is the poor man's Rachel Bilson... thank you J-Unit, that was on point.

I'm no Mohnider fan, but I didn't mind his story too much this week ... maybe I just have low expectations. But I figure that he goes after the soccer kid, who gives him some piece of crucial information about Sylar (maybe the kid is how Mohinder Sr. tracked down Sylar to begin with). Or, I don't know!

But loved the other stories! I missed Niki/Jessica ... I bet she goes all Sarah Conners next week...

Steve Author Profile Page:

You think Eden saying that she's "been through the same thing" means she was a hero? I think she just meant she was addicted to heroin. And was probably lying about it to get sympathy and make me not try to hate her so much even though she kind of looks like Rachel Bilson who is ridiculously hot (yay run-on sentences!).

I also thought this episode was kind of sucky. I can't stand Matt's story, hate Mohinder and didn't get enough shots of Claire trying to darnedest to muster up some cleavage. But, next week has to be amazing, hopefully they won't surprise us with a cliffhanger/"fall season" finale when it's over.

I thought this episode was great! Yeah Mohinder's story was a bit on the slow side, but we didn't have to put up with Niki blubbering like a baby! WOOHOO!
And I'm totally in love with HRG! I actually got teary eyed when he started talking about how him and his wife were having trouble conceiving and then them getting Claire. It was so sweet.
I don't think he's really a good guy.. just sorta a neutral.
As for Hiro... He obviously went back WAY too far. If you remember.. the waitress commented that she got that Japanese book for her birthday SIX MONTHS AGO. That means that he obviously went back WAY too far since he was in the picture with her meaning that he's really good friends or more.
OOO I can't wait to see what happens on Monday!!! It's gonna be goooood

Ok couple things...
-Did anyone notice how they took great pains to show Sylars shattered watch at the diner, and then when they showed MOhinder's father being killed the guy doing the killing slammed his watch into the window, shattering it. AKA his dad was killed by Sylar.

-plus i don't trust HRG, he could easily be sylar, needing to know the future in order to know how to DEFEAT the heros and kill claire

-OR, couldn't that creepy little kid be the young Sylar? Mohinder's father was the one the brought out Sylar's powers, and next to his picture was an article about him learning in his sleep, or something. So maybe this little kid was Sylar, before he turned evil? i dunno..

Not sure if anyone else is aware of this...

But Sylar is played by Zachary Quinto. He was was gay friend of Tori Spelling in "So Notorious".

Just thought I'd share.

Loved this episode. I find all of the acting on this show to be top notch, except for Ali Larter. Glad to have a Niki episode off, but that said...if we don't see some of Micah's skills soon, I'm gonna be pissed.

oon, and j-unit...I have a feeling that as the mimic, Peter Petrelli was the ONLY person who could join Hiro in his suspended time-space-place. Not Eden.

LOST needs to watch this show and see how a story is revealed without using endless carrots and switch-and-bait tactics.

I also loved how this show managed to make me care about Charlie the waitress within 40 minutes or so, as opposed to the Tailies and the Midseason Replacement and Mary Sue on LOST.

AvaMarie Author Profile Page:

I was thinking Eden looked like Rachel Bilson as well. Maybe Eden has the "power of persuasion" and can get people to do stuff by just asking them.

Maybe soccer kid is Mohinder, I am probably way off base.

I wonder how far back Hiro went to save Charlie? I agree with Ubiguitious, I liked Charlie's personality a lot and I was hoping her death would be reversed.

dent Author Profile Page:

I was totally going to comment how much Eden reminded me of Rachael Bilson. I have been trying to think who she looked like since we first saw her. Maybe she will inspire Rachael to eat again...

Also, what was up with Mohinder's mullet?? I didn't remember him having that before.

Yeah, this was a little slow. Really liked the new girl, Charlie, and loved Hiro yelling to Ando, "I'm sweet!!!' Reminded me of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer---"I'm c-u-t-e!!!!"

God, what am I gonna do in January???? I love this show, but I cannot forsake an hour of Bauer power!!

He looks like Dr Phil to me; maybe Mohinder's family flew him in for some sort of intervention?

I am still convinced Ted is the guy who blows up NYC.

Hmmm... Iyer Sanjog --> Sanjog, Iyver --> S Iyver, which kinda sounds like Sylar.

silentfire Author Profile Page:

OMG Ive been waiting for this recap to come. OK so for one thing, I think when Eden said she went through the same thing she meant drug addiction. I was thinking her power is the power of persuasion but wouldn't that be sort of dumb because then Eden could have used it to tell HRG we don't really need to use heroin or w/e.

Didn't they say HRG's first name somewhere in this episode, because I thought I heard it. Also I was trying to figure out why they showed Sylars watch, so I kept looking at other characters watches but I couldn't find anything.

Mohinder did know that key was for the locked cabinet, he just didn't want to open it because he didn't want to get back into his fathers work, or at least wasn't sure he wanted to yet.

Mohinders sister has powers, my friend told me he thinks that its her in Mohinders dream. IMO the kid looks like a boy, but maybe she was tomboyish and since she died at the age of 5 and kid did look like around that age. Anyway so I think the kid is his sister and his dad new that she had powers which is why he started the research. When Mohinder was arguing with his father about leaving, he didn't know about his sister. His dad was convinced that there were others with powers because his own daughter had them, and he didnt want to tell mohinder about his daughter.

I loved charlies character although her power was kind of lame. I was so hyped up into thinking this is is Hiro's love and was pissed when she died! So whats the deal Sylar can read minds? I don't remember him having that power? I thought he could just fly, move things with mind, and be invincible.

Overall I really liked this episode despite the mohinder story. I loved the hiro ending and HRG's new story. The Matt bit was cool too but it wasnt as good as compared to Hiro's bit.

dumbanddumber Author Profile Page:

You would think that if Eden had the power of persuasion, that she could just have persuaded Isaace to paint the future without heroin, esp if it really is just a mental block.

Charlie's power might seem kind of lame, but it does seem that the powers grow stronger over time. Maybe she'll evolve into some kind of human supercomputer, that would be kind of cool. Especially if you could play WoW.

CrazyTrain Author Profile Page:

Eh, that kid looked more like 10, def. not 5. And is aboy, so....

who cares how boring Mohinders' storyline is, that man is HOT. I prefer to tune out and just stare at him during his scenes.

Also, I swear that the second time they showed Sylar in the diner, he wasn't wearing his watch. Yes or no?

kdawg Author Profile Page:

I love this show, but can anyone explain to me why Hiro and his friend speak in Japanese but when Mohinder is back in India he speaks in English to everybody?

CrazyTrain Author Profile Page:

Well, that kid isn't 5, more like 10 and is a boy, so, sister, I don't think so.

Great recap, J-unit.
I have a few questions: The picture Isaac made of NYC blowing up, was on his floor right? Now HRG has it in his office? Did they cut up his floor?

Mohander's father's funeral reminded me of the "Others" funeral on Lost.

Charlie's birthday was 6 months ago, so Hiro comes back then. That must be the next installment.

Great show.

Hirofan-good point! I just thought I was so cool cause i came up with this theory that went something like this: oo ooo what if it ends up being Hiro went back and saved the cheerleader the first time around (ie when quarterback punk killed her)and that some how that would change all sorts of things...
However, HRG clearly said homecoming night and the night of Claire's death was some other thing- "burn in effigy' night or something, for the football game. SO my theory is off. But i wanted to post it so we'd all continue/start thinking about how, if Hiro really started going way back (Charlie's birthday) how much things could change and the things we've already seen could be changed. Which pretty much just confuses the hell out of me and I hope they don't make it that complicated, but if they do and pull it off-SWEET!

626 Author Profile Page:

I agree that Hiro went back much further than he expected. Now that he's back there, I susupect that he probably was unable to return to the timeline he was in before because if he travelled forward in time from where he saved Charlie, he would be travelling into a new timeline, where she is alive. This is why he was unable to go back to Ando.

Also, I seem to remember an episode or two ago when HRG was speaking to Eden. I forget exactly what was said, but it implied that she had powers because I remember thinking "Oh, she has powers too!"

mck Author Profile Page:

Ok, maybe I'm totally offbase, but I think HRG is Linderman...I could have sworn they called him that in Vegas.

Hi J-Unit...

Just wondering where you have been lately on the Veronica Mars summaries. We really miss them. Step it up :)

Holy crap! Did I just get that the title of this recap is supposed to be sung to the theme to The Greatest American Hero? I guess the wine is clarifying things...

Trying to make too much sense of time travel on a TV shows makes your head hurt. But, I think that we know that Hiro is still in the same timeline Ando is in because of the changed picture on the wall...

Lady J Author Profile Page:

The problem with this show is the dialogue. Both the voiceovers and the characters. It is completely awful. The show would rock if they would just write well.

I'm thinking Iyer Santog is Sylar. The concept of Sylar as a supremely powerful villain reminds me of the character Gabriel Ashelocke on "Mutant X." As the first mutant he possessed extreme powers in all four aspects from birth and was nigh unstoppable.

I'm guessing Sprague is the one makes NYC go boom.

And I've seen pics from upcoming eps over on ComicsContinuum.com. They always have something for the spoiler whore in ya.

jppuertorico85 Author Profile Page:

ok i have a few comments lol...first of all, if hiro went back in time and influenced charlie's history, then why didn't ando's present immediately change? He didnt even have to count to 5, because no matter how long it might have seemed to hiro to go back and change something, for ando it would have happened immediately. The police and detectives were still walking around the diner like she was murdered. Secondly, to kdawg, india was a british colony for like 200 years and as a result english is widespread in india, esp. in the urban areas and among the educated class. That's not to say they dont speak indian, but its plausible they speak english to each other as well. And 3rd, i think its obvious that eden has the power of persuasion although I'm not sure what she struggled w/ (drugs or just coming to terms w/ her power?). And lastly, for those of you who think that charlie's power was lame, i think its nice that the show has people w/ powers that range from one end of the spectrum all the way to the other...it's genetic mutations caused by evolution, NOT just superhero stuff. If genetic mutations are the cause of these powers, you would expect them to range like this, not just to turn everyone into an x-man or superman or something. And I too fell in love w/ her in like a half hour-very good writing and character development to get people to love her quickly-she's so sweet!

GiadaFan Author Profile Page:

jppuertorico85-

Like an earlier poster said, figuring out time travel is headache-inducing.

Would Ando's future really change all of a sudden? I have no idea... perhaps what they show is that Ando really does end up in that diner and Hiro is physically somewhere else since he prevented Charlie from coming to work?

I read somewhere that if someone really did figure out how to time travel, they would have to send the entire Earth back in time, not just the one traveler, a la Wells "Time Machine", Back to the Future, etc.

Does all that really matter anyway? All we know is that Hiro is working on becoming a real hero and I like it!

TinkerbellAPixie Author Profile Page:

"So whats the deal Sylar can read minds? I don't remember him having that power? I thought he could just fly, move things with mind, and be invincible."

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing he steals the brains of those with powers so that he can somehow consume their powers. So if he eats Peter's brain it might be a waste of calories. Why temporarily get someone's power when you can eat it and get it for good.

So Mohinder has the power to unlock mysteries by walking into his own dreams....seems Peter absorbed that power temporarily when he went back to see his patient in a dream. The one that is that girl's father.

I'm guessing Pixie chick couldn't use her power of persuasion on HRG guy because he uses his bodyguard buddy to keep the powerful from using their powers on him. OR I'm overthinking things. I'm thinking those markings that Matt and the Human Torch have tie back to something installed in them by HRG and his pal. I'm guessing that they wanted to do the same thing to Nathan but he flew off before they had the chance.

And my last guess - Sylar can't be that little kid from the dreams since the actor signed on to play him is of a completely different ethnicity.

Ubiquitous Author Profile Page:

Also I was trying to figure out why they showed Sylars watch, so I kept looking at other characters watches but I couldn't find anything.
That's because it was worn by the man who strangled Mohinder's father in his taxi cab.
