It's said that a writer can never go wrong borrowing from the Bard. Shakespeare makes a great coat rack to hang a story on, no matter what story you may be trying to tell.
In the world of comic books, there are a couple of guys who are also pretty safe bets to borrow from. Frank Miller, Will Eisner, and Alan Moore come to mind, but there are many more great writers in the field. Alan Moore is special though. Particularly if you're a fan of Heroes.
I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Heroes had a great deal in common with The Watchmen. This week confirmed that intentional or not, the spirit of Moore's seminal work runs through the show.
If you are a fan of Heroes and haven't read "The Watchmen" by Moore, do yourself a favour and find a way to do so.
One of Moore's pet plot devices is the catastrophe as a catalyst for change. V for Vendetta sees the hero blow up Parliament to unite the populace against a fascist regime. In The Watchmen, a "Hero" named Ozymandias creates a massive disaster that unites a fractured world against a non-existent foe born of a common fear. Sound familiar? Actually Moore borrowed the idea himself and even goes so far as to mention the 1963 Outer Limits episode "The Architects of Fear" that followed a similar plot on page 29 of the 12th and final issue of The Watchmen.
In both of those Moore graphic novels, one could easily view the "hero" through a different lens and brand him the villain. In fact, many characters in both books do just that. Moore is the master of the enigmatic hero as villain and vice versa.
If you're going to borrow, it's always a good idea to borrow from the best...
This week opened with a wonderfully creepy voice-over by Malcolm McDowell, detailing some of the motivations and dichotomies of certain of our Heroes through a tour of Linderman's Mendez collection. He speaks of a monster's fight for survival for the chance to kill again, a mother's willingness to fracture her soul to save her child, the double edged lies Bennett must tell to protect his daughter, a wandering hero's pure joy at success and his darkest hour when all seems lost.
"Alone, each tells a single story. Together, they can tell the future."
McDowell as Linderman is, without a doubt, the best casting of the year.
Alone in a cell, Bennett is startled when Claire bursts in. Her overacted apologies soon alert him to the fact that this isn't his daughter. Thompson shoos her out of the cell so he can have a face to face with his friend. Bennett is on "Death Row" as far as Thompson is concerned, but Bennett seems remarkably unconcerned, going so far as to suggest that he might actually be the one in control, not Thompson.
"If you were going to kill me, you'd have done it by now."
"I'm just waiting for the order. That's how we do it here. We follow orders."
Makes you wonder who's orders...
Am I the only one who would have preferred to see Candice get medieval on his ass rather a civilized chat between old friends? I'd love to know what she had in mind to make him rip out his eyes. Candice is so deliciously nasty, I'm dying for the "Cheerleader vs. Satan's Schoolgirl" episode...
While Linderman gives Nathan Petrelli a tour of his private museum, he takes the opportunity to explain to Nathan that his true goal is to heal the world. When Nathan wonders what Linderman could possibly know about healing.
That's right, my power is to turn any item into a moving CGI
"A few things."
Hmm...it's curious. Linderman's power is really similar to Claire's, if she could project it...
Matt Parkman is awakened by a voice in his head.
Bennett.
He's got a plan to get them both out.
"If you follow everything I say, you might not die."
Back in Linderman's museum, Nathan sees a familiar face in one of Isaac's paintings. Hiro.
"I know this man."
"Oh, great. If you see him, tell him I want my sword back."
"He said he needed it to save the world. A lot of people seem to be saying that these days..."
Linderman explains to Petrelli that his collection of paintings isn't just a bunch of art for art's sake. It's a road map to peace and prosperity, visions of a better future from every era.

Grey,
AWESOME recap! You didn't leave out a thing! I have a question? With your background in comics/sci-fi, I figured you would have an answer. Isn't it bad when a time traveler runs into oneself?
I agree with you about Simone's dad. I can't wait to get the back story on the older generation of Heroes. I also agree with Linderman potentially being the father of Nathan or Peter. The online graphic novels portray Petrelli Sr. with no powers and I think we have to look at the powers genectically right? Isn't it a recessive trait? What about Hiro's dad? I wonder if he has any powers....

Thanks!
As for your question, usually the result isn't good if a character meets himself.
A paradox is the big concern. If you tell yourself to do something in the past that fixes it so that the future changes, how did you tell yourself in the first place?
Time travel gives me a headache.

I can't wait to find out how Isaac's death will be the clue that tells the Heroes how to kill Sylar.
The season's almost over. I think I've read that the whole Sylar/bomb in New York thing will be resolved this season. What's going to happen next season? Will the show be as much fun after everyone knows each other?

Great recap GB!!
"Time travel gives me a headache."
Me too! a little off topic but....I have a real problem with the guy from the future being the kid's father in the Terminator. I can't get my brain to accept it.....I think all the Hiro time travel will annoy me.
Other than that, I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

Does anyone else become emotionally drained after watching an episode of this show? Seriously, I need to give myself at least an hour after watching this show to recover before I do anything else.
I think the bomb thing will be resolved, but I'm not sure about Sylar, I can't see them killing off such a main villain. Although, I think they are setting up Linderman to be the main problem next season, so maybe they can afford to lose Sylar.
Also, I didn't actually think Mister Ee-zaak would die. It just seemed to obvious. And didn't the bomb go off shortly after Isaac's death in Hiro's first trip to the future? We still have 4 episodes left... It seems that they should occur within a 1-2 day timeframe. The story will really be picking up here I can imagine.

I read somewhere, that the next season will not be a continuation of this story. Basically a whole new set of characters and perhaps a few years into the future or the past.

I can guarantee that if and when a time machine is invented, it will be sponsored by the folks who make Tylenol.
I'll go on record now with a prediction. IF Sylar gets killed this season, it will be Hiro and he will do it by taking off the top of his head just above the eyebrows.
I'm also starting to think that Ando is on Papa Hiro's payroll as protection. He just seems a wee bit too comfy with that gun and uniform.
One of the other things in "The Watchmen" that seems to have found it's way into Heroes is the multi-generational nature of the story. Can't wait to see the inevitable flashback of a younger Mamma Petrelli in action.
Everyone join me in the finger crossing. I'm rooting for a tight leather unitard. Probably dark blue. She'd never wear a cape...

GB, great review! I am so glad that the series is back on. I saw the cast webcast last Monday, and they definitively stated that the bombing NY arc would be resolved by the end of the season. They also hinted strongly that the rest of the cast minus Issac would be back for next season, which would be called "Generations"

Great recap!
What sucks though is that NY isn't gonna get blown up.
You know they're going to save everyone considering that the next episode is going to show us what's going on 5yrs into the future.
So they're definitely not going to blow anything up.... which sucks b/c it would've been an AWESOME twist that not alot of people would expect.
You know people would expect the heroes to prevail.. not to totally fail.
Anywho! I love this damn show!!

Well, the captions under the screen caps were funny at least.
I saw the ep - I don't need a play by play and lots of exact quotes. TVG usually provides the funny. This was boring. :(
The episode itself was good though!

Greybishop, thanks for the excellent recap. You caught a number of things that I missed. Finally, a show on television that satisfies the needs of my inner geek - love it!

Thank god we have the fountain of knowledge that is GB for Lost and Heroes. I wouldn't enjoy the shows nearly as much without these recaps, and I really appreciate how quickly they're up. My one complaint? So. Many. Short. Sentences!

"Tackle the guy, drop kick him, throw Mohinder at him, something."
Fantastic.
Great read, as always, GB.
NateTheOkay, I had forgotten about Hiro's discovery of Isaac earlier in the season. If I remember correctly, it looked like he'd been dead a little while (and wasn't he frozen? Or, at least, icy-looking? I don't remember seeing much more of that power from Sylar). I think you might be right, though; the next episodes have to cover a short period of time, at least between his death and the bomb (which may or may not go off...now MY head hurts).
Next week's ep. is going to be pretty cool.

Awesome recap! Smart and funny. Thank you!
I think the key to stopping Sylar is is the last comic, soon to be published.
I wonder where Sylar got the freezing ability he used on the family and maybe Isaac. He doesn't really use powers other than TK. Also, didn't he see the list before Mohinder knocked him out with drugged chai? Having killed Charlie, wouldn't he have it in his memory already?

Good recap.
Here's what I feel like would be a great twist (though most of my friends think it's stupid): Sylar turning good. We've been hearing for a while that Sylar's been through some shit. What if at some point, he turns good? It would be an interesting dynamic to see him working with the other heroes.
For those that watch Lost: How hard would you laugh/freak out if the Heroes writers gave a nod to their friends (yes... the producers and creators are friends) by giving Linderman the first name "Jacob"?
Peace.

Question: when Sylar painted the picture of the guy in the White House, was it Nathan in the picture, or was it Sylar himself ???

Aravind (#16) - After last nights episode you may be right!
GB - For some reason I couldn't post any comments last week. I am so happy you are recapping this show. I LOVE your LOST recaps (asides and all!). I look forward to reading the recap of last nights episode!

GB, you are a strong writer, but I gotta say....
I MISS J-UNIT!!!! :-( He always was soooo witty and had great punchlines. Plus, he didn't make me feel like I had to be a fan of comics to understand the quality of "Heroes".... I miss you, J; you were my tambourine man!

First off great recap, yes J-unit was great, but we all need time to develop into our own element. By the way, the time thing is easy, it's fluid not set in stone, once you've told yourself to chance time, you don't need to do it again because it is already done. See it's easy. :)
Anyway, I just had to say, that maybe Mr. Moore uses the "fear" concept in his comic books, but it is not a new concept to unite a divided people via fear. Just look at Bismarck when he was the chanceler of Germany.
By the way, did anyone else notice in Peter's "vision" where he destroys NYC that only "heros" are present and Simone is one of them and she's with Nathan? Her father was a "hero" why won't she be one? Oh, btw Petelli Sr. didn't need powers for the boys to have them, their mom has powers, just remember the tight suit coming. :) No cape of course.
Keep up the good work.
